Amazon Affiliate Listicle, but with my ADHD and propensity for swearing
So I'mma do a listicle of Amazon affiliate links just like every other place is doing for Prime Days.
I'm just gonna tell you ahead of time that I'm doing it for money and the sense of incredulity I feel about... Amazon as a whole.
🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
A Backbone, probably the most ridiculous gaming accessory I've ever seen. Yes, I'd like to use my phone as a controller for $35 more than a normal PS5 controller costs and have almost no other functionality!
I am ALL ABOUT BIDET ATTACHMENTS, okay, but this brand is so fucking overpriced. I'm not paying $77 to launch high-powdered water up my chocolate starfish, and I'm definitely not paying the normal $110. I WILL say that I've used this brand and it was good, but... Dudes. It's a stream of water to make wiping your ass easier. How much is that actually worth? This is a much better price for the exact same functions.
When I saw this set of movies, I didn't see that it was James Bond. Daniel Craig is wearing like a sweater, but I also didn't realize it was Daniel Craig. All I saw was CRAIG. This is, for some reason, absolutely fucking hilarious to me.
Instant Pot for $65, need I say more?
Okay I'm not even joking, this is just a pretty fucking decent price ($84) for a 1.5 TB microSD card.
If you have a 3D resin printer, today is the day to stock up: AnyCubic has some really good resin deals going on! I personally love the plant-based resin, but I've heard amazing things about their water-washable stuff. I wanna try the ultra-tough resin, though. (Note: this is UV resin so you don't have to actually use it in a 3D printer. You can use it in a mold too.)
Let's spend $50 to make a single cup of coffee at a time when I can make better coffee using a disposable tea bag. 🙄 The hatred I have for single-use coffee makers knows no bounds.
What you do is take about two regular spoons full of coffee grounds (another half a spoon if you like it harsh, half a spoon less if you like it light), put them in the tea bag. Put any other spices and flavorings you like in the bag too. Close it, and tie it closed really well (I wrap the strings around the top of the bag and tie them again when I've tied it.) steep for 5 minutes in a mug full of hot water (doesn't matter how it got hot), and then add milk or creamer depending on your preference. It will have less of an acidic bite and a better flavor profile.
I'm super into the idea of bleaching my tooth enamel until it rots away and my teeth are super white but extremely sensitive! Give it to me, Crest! Yeah Daddy!
If you DO want the tooth-brightening shit, you'll probably want to invest in a few tubes of Sensodyne. Trust me.
Oh, you eat Tide pods? Cool, cool, if you Wan a be like 2021 about it. I'm a dishwasher pod kid. Snack time.
OK no sarcasm, this shit will clean your washing machine so fuckin good. My daughter gave me some and suddenly none of us smell like Satan's asshole anymore. Fucking amazing.
Okay look, if you wanna get special pimple patches, go ahead, they're on sale today and they DO work, but they're just hydrocolloidal bandages. I get the regular ones bc I can cut them to shape.
Okay fullstop, I love the power mops Swiffer makes and this is a GREAT deal. Anyone wanna buy me a new mop? 😂
Oh shit, they have Naked mini-palettes for 40% off. That's $21 omg why am I a poor with expensive makeup taste??? WHY? (They also have the Stila liquid eyeliner on sale somewhere.)
Yes, sir? I'd like the biggest, widest computer monitor to ever exist. I'm a gamer, you see. A thousand dollars today, you say? What a deal! I'm a gamer! (Look, I have a gaming computer and a pretty big monitor but there's a fkn limit, Samsung. There's a line and you've crossed it.)
I almost didn't click on the "pet products" tab because I miss Ziva SO MUCH. But I do love pampering my pets. In that vein, WHO WANTS TO BUY A SHOCK COLLAR?
If you've ever needed 900 poop-scooping mini garbage bags... Today is your day. Time to shine.
Aw fuck, I found a pretty damn good deal on a cat tree.
If you don't have a 3D printer, you have to buy Settlers of Catan like a peon and it's on sale today.
I'm actually disappointed in myself how much I want this.
TICKET TO RIDE FOR UNDER $40.
If you wanna train your pet to talk these things are on sale.
For the low, low price of $98, you too can let your child kill themselves by improperly using a Zipline kit.
EXPLODING KITTENS FOR $10 AND I MEAN THE GAME NOT ACTUAL KITTENS BUT I GUESS HE HAS A SHOW NAMED THAT TOO?
As a general rule Raven and I don't buy Nerf products because they're owned by Hasbro and we're boycotting them because of the whole Pinkertons thing. Plus, in the world of foam dart guns they're actually doing the worst when it comes to innovation and performance. But! We will get them on clearance or secondhand. I consider Prime Day to be clearance, so have this multipack for a kid's party that I wish I'd had for Raven's birthday party last month.
Also, this translucent blaster.
I love this style of shorts (although I got the viral tiktok ones) but omg this one has POCKETS.
Today I discovered that there is a brand called THE GYM PEOPLE and they make really boring clothes.
Hey plus-sized ladies! Want yet another ugly beige bra? Look no further!
I have one of these mandolin slicers. Highly recommend.
Get your kids used to corporate surveillance with an Amazon Echo made just for them!
THESE ARE THE ONLY PENS I USE.
Amazon putting these under "off to college" is absolutely fucking hilarious to me.
I'm actually really bummed I don't have the money to get this Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Amazon knows what's up when it comes to kids: a five-pack of identical pants. I think it's for uniforms but like. Let's be real, kids just go through clothes like that.
Every time I see a Skullcandy product, I remember when I was at a Skullcandy booth at the Warped Tour and I asked the booth babe how they compared to Sennheiser or even Audio-Technica. She looked at me, and in a snooty voice, said, "I've never even heard of Sennheiser before."

The Best Halloween-Themed Games on PC Today: Spooky Digital Delights for #CyberSamhain
Alright, PC gamers, it’s time to dim the lights, crank up your gaming rig, and dive into the creepiest, most terrifying games this side of a hard drive for #CyberSamhain. Sure, we’ve left the days of 8-bit ghosts and ghouls behind, but PC horror has stepped up its game in a big way—seriously, the jump scares now are next-level. Whether you’re into psychological horror, grotesque monsters, or just wanna creep through haunted mansions with nothing but a flashlight, there’s something here to make your Halloween one to remember.
So, grab your headset and your snack of choice (maybe skip the heart-attack-inducing energy drink for these), and get ready to scream at your monitor. Let’s check out the best spooky-themed PC games you should be playing right now.
1. Phasmophobia (2020) If ghost-hunting reality shows and your fear of things going bump in the night had a terrifying lovechild, Phasmophobia would be it. This multiplayer co-op game has you and your friends investigating haunted locations, trying to figure out what kind of spirit is messing with you. Sounds fun, right? Well, until you’re the one standing alone in a dark hallway, watching your breath fog up while a ghost whispers in your ear. This game is straight-up nightmare fuel, and the scariest part? It’s unpredictable. One second you’re laughing with your mates, the next, you’re screaming as the lights flicker and something moves behind you.
Resource: Rock Paper Shotgun has a killer (pun intended) guide on Phasmophobia—check it out for pro ghost-hunting tips and tricks.
2. Resident Evil Village (2021) No Halloween gaming list is complete without a Resident Evil title, and Resident Evil Village is one of the best ways to freak yourself out in glorious HD. You play as Ethan Winters (again), wandering through a remote village filled with creepy castles, werewolf-like monsters, and the internet’s favorite tall vampire lady. The atmosphere in this game is off the charts, from the snow-covered ruins to the eerie castle halls. And trust me, the scares? Yeah, they’re there. Whether you’re fending off a swarm of creatures or just trying to survive the creepy-as-hell doll house section, Village knows how to keep your heart racing.
Resource: Head over to IGN’s review of Resident Evil Village for an in-depth look at why it’s perfect for a Halloween scare-fest.
3. Little Nightmares II (2021) If you’re into creepy visuals and dark fairy-tale vibes, Little Nightmares II is an absolute must-play. This puzzle-platformer has you controlling a tiny, raincoat-wearing character in a nightmarish world where everything wants to kill you. The unsettling atmosphere is paired with grotesque enemies that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. It’s not gory—it’s just unnerving in that “things are very wrong here” way. If Tim Burton made a video game, this would be it. The art style is gorgeous, the sound design is chilling, and the puzzles will keep you glued to the screen until you escape this horrific world (if you can).
Resource: GameSpot has a fantastic piece on Little Nightmares II, explaining why it’s the perfect creepy game to play alone with the lights off.
4. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes (2021) Love interactive horror movies where your decisions actually matter? Then the Dark Pictures Anthology is calling your name, and House of Ashes is the latest chapter in this spine-tingling series. Set during the Iraq war, a group of soldiers stumbles upon an ancient underground temple, and guess what? It’s not empty. You’ll guide them through this terrifying labyrinth while making decisions that can lead to either their survival or some truly horrifying deaths. This one is all about atmosphere, tension, and those sweet, sweet jump scares. Plus, it’s a game best played with friends, thanks to the online multiplayer mode that’ll have you arguing about who just got everyone killed.
Resource: Check out Polygon’s breakdown of the entire Dark Pictures Anthology series to get all the background you need before diving into House of Ashes.
5. Dead by Daylight (2016) If you haven’t been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Dead by Daylight. It’s the ultimate multiplayer horror game where you either play as one of four survivors or as the killer who’s trying to hunt them down. With a variety of different killers to choose from (including classics like Ghostface, Michael Myers, and more), every match feels like a terrifying game of cat and mouse. And survivors? Yeah, you’re going to be running, hiding, and screaming as you try to repair generators and escape the map before the killer finds you. It’s an adrenaline rush, pure and simple. Also, the devs keep adding new content, so it’s never boring.
Resource: PC Gamer has an excellent guide on how to survive in Dead by Daylight—trust me, you’ll need it.
6. Visage (2020) Looking for a psychological horror game that’ll mess with your mind? Visage is the kind of game that you play with the lights on and a backup pair of underwear nearby. Set in an old, creepy house, you’ll be exploring rooms filled with paranormal activity, strange noises, and freaky occurrences that will leave you questioning what’s real and what isn’t. The atmosphere is thick with tension, and the pacing is perfect for slowly building up to those terrifying moments. If you loved the P.T. demo (RIP Silent Hills), then Visage will scratch that same haunted house itch.
Resource: For a detailed breakdown of why Visage will make you sleep with the lights on, head over to TechRaptor’s review of the game.
7. Amnesia: Rebirth (2020) Amnesia: Rebirth takes everything you loved (or feared) about the original Amnesia and cranks it up. Set in the Algerian desert, you play as Tasi Trianon, trying to survive the horrors lurking in a forgotten underground temple while slowly unraveling your past. Expect plenty of dark, claustrophobic spaces, disturbing creatures, and puzzles that’ll leave you with sweaty palms. This game is a slow burn, but the payoff is worth it, especially if you like your horror with a healthy dose of “oh my god, what was that sound?”
Resource: Eurogamer has a great piece on why Amnesia: Rebirth is the perfect mix of psychological horror and puzzle-solving fun.
Final Thoughts So, there you have it, ghouls and gamers—the best Halloween-themed PC games to spook up your #CyberSamhain celebrations. Whether you’re hunting ghosts with your mates, battling vampires, or creeping through haunted houses all by your lonesome, these games are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Just remember to keep your speakers turned up and your lights down low—after all, it’s not really Halloween unless you’re terrified.
Now, get out there, boot up your PC, and let’s make this #CyberSamhain one to remember! Just don’t blame me when you scream so loud the neighbors think you're being haunted.

Navigating the Digital Divide: China’s New Restrictions on Online Gaming and the Implications for Surveillance
Introduction
Critics argue that China’s recent move to restrict online gaming for minors has sparked global discussion about the potential consequences of such measures. While the intentions behind the regulations may be commendable, the implementation and potential outcomes raise concerns about individual privacy and the expansion of surveillance. This blog delves into the intricacies of China’s new gaming restrictions, exploring the potential consequences and their implications for surveillance.
China’s Online Gaming Restrictions: A Closer Look
According to (World Economic Forum 2021), in August 2021, China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) issued a notice imposing new restrictions on online gaming for minors. The regulations stipulate that minors are prohibited from playing online games during the weekdays, with a maximum of three hours of playtime permitted on weekends and holidays. Additionally, gaming companies are mandated to implement strict identification verification procedures and adopt real-name registration systems to ensure compliance. It was mentioned by (Inocencio 2021), that only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays - from 8pm to 9pm were kids allowed to play video games. On top of that real-name verification and log-in systems are now necessary for access to online games and gaming businesses are only able to provide three hours of service to young gamers during those short windows of time (Inocencio 2021).
Potential Consequences of the Restrictions
The implementation of these restrictions has the potential to impact various aspects of Chinese society, particularly among the young generation. One significant consequence is the potential for increased surveillance. To enforce the gaming restrictions, gaming companions may need to implement more stringent monitoring mechanisms, such as tracking playtime, game content, and user interactions. This increase in data collection could re=aise concerns about privacy and the potential for misuse of potential information (Xiao 2022). Restricting gaming for those under the age of eighteen can prevent addictions from forming, which some experts believe has serious ramification for the gaming business (Brooke 2021). Due to what research showed that gaming habits frequently develop in children, this may have an effect on China’s tech companies’ future earnings (Brooke 2021).
Impact on Individual Privacy
The expanded surveillance measures associated with the gaming restrictions could have a chilling effect on individual privacy. The constant monitoring of online activities could lead to self-censorship and a reluctance to engage in open and unfettered online interactions. This could potentially hinder the free flow of information and ideas, particularly among younger generations (Yaqoub, Jingwu & Ambekar 2023). This would ultimately be the same technological framework that shields kids from danger, restricts speech on the internet, and gathers a ton of personal information (Yang 2023).
Implications for Social Cohesion
The restrictions could also have implications for social cohesion. By limiting minors’ access to online gaming, which has become a significant social platform for rmany young people, the regulations could potentially fragment social connections and hinder the formation of online communities. This could lead to a sense of isolation and disconnection among younger generations (Yue, Teresiene & Ullah 2021). This would in turn make children become socially apprehensive and find it difficult to communicate with adults or their classmates (Shoppe 2021). It is also mentioned by (Shoppe 2021) that because humans are social beings that share knowledge with one another, social isolation can impede social and emotional development in addition to slowing intellectual progress.
Alternative Approaches
Instead of imposing strict restrictions, amore balanced approach could involve promoting healthier gaming habits and encouraging parental involvement in monitoring their children’s online activities. Educational programs could be implemented to teach minors about responsible gaming, cyberbullying prevention, and online safety. Additionally, promoting alternative leisure activities and encouraging physical and social interactions could help reduce excessive gaming among minors. One of the methods include to set a limit to one self. For example, setting timers for how long one plays a certain game and become conscious to the amount of time spent playing in a day even if one does not stop immediately after the timer goes off, awareness is still essential (Allan 2017).
Conclusion
China's new restrictions on online gaming for minors raise concerns about individual privacy, surveillance, and the potential impact on social cohesion. While the intentions behind the regulations may be to promote healthy habits and protect minors, the implementation could have unintended consequences that require careful consideration. A more balanced approach that focuses on education, parental involvement, and alternative leisure activities could be more effective in addressing the underlying concerns while minimizing potential negative impacts.

A lot of it can! I built a stupidly overpowered computer given that the game I played the most in the first month or two was Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from 1999. Windows 11 actually does better with SMAC than Windows 10 did, it's only crashed once! I can also run Creative Suite CS2 which I OWN on this system. Photoshop from 2004 doesn't quite know what to do with multithreading but it's actually still really fast and the 64 gigs of RAM doesn't hurt. At the moment I have NMS running in the background while I have a gadzillion firefox tabs open and I could easily watch a video like this and be fine. One of the upsides of holding on to old software is that where it can take advantage of the new hardware, it really does run very well and you get actually uplift. The issue is that a lot of people lost the thread of Intel's naming scheme and haven't upgraded their computer or they bought something with stupidly little RAM (16g is probably okay but 32 g is what most gamers will be happier with and I bought a little word processing toaster of a netbook in 2020-ish or 2021 which had FOUR gigs of RAM but there was a huge tech shortage at the time and it can do what i needed it to do (run Scrivener) just fine. It cannot handle a lot of tabs open and still do, you know, the operating system. 8 gigs is Sluggish because of Windows bloat.
And yes, I have a fervent desire for two things in programming:
That programmers optimize their programs to run on a wide variety of systems with reasonable speeds
That programmers enable their programs to use things like multithreading and large amounts of available RAM *if there is excess capacity readily available* to speed necessary functions that take significant time. Like, oh, loading screens and transitions shouldn't take much time at all on my system but the cpu is sitting there at like 4% utilization while the framerate drops to 30fps on a LOADING screen because they just had to animate a gadzillion star systems through the gpu alone (looking at you NMS.)
What I mean by that is that, for example, in the gaming sector, there are a lot of companies who are like "How much eye candy can we stuff in here to meet our arbitrary (stupidly low) framerate goal" and most of the "eye candy" is stuff most observers wouldn't know or recognize from a hole in the ground. Yes, I'm talking about Starfield. I didn't understand why they'd accept a framerate of 30fps on console until I discovered they'd artificially locked both Skyrim and Fallout 4 ON THE PC to like 30 or 40 fps. And then tied the physics to framerate, completely unnecessarily (as in you can change this behavior with like two or three ini edits.) Then there's games like Baldur's Gate which was done thoughtfully and can run on a huge range of hardware. I had to return one Civilization game because they hadn't accounted for an aging fanbase and high resolution monitors and I flat out couldn't read the tiny text to play the game.
But yeah, we have this neverending leapfrogging bloat that goes on, where users try to upgrade to get things to work better and companies decide to fill in the new overhead with data mining background tasks and "user experience optimizations" that are a ridiculous rat race that in no way enhances the user experience.
Anyway, I'm not opposed to upgrades but like, do them sensibly and if you can, learn to build your own stuff so that you aren't beholden to the anticonsumer tactics most major computer system integrators (dell, etc.) use to get as much of your money as possible while giving you the least in exchange.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted: a survival videogame for brave gamers
Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted is a virtual reality survival horror game that was released on May 28, 2019. Developed by Steel Wool Studios and Scott Cawthon, it serves as the eighth installment in the popular Five Nights at Freddy's franchise. The game utilizes Unreal Engine 4 and is available on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch, with non-VR versions released later in December 2019.
Gameplay
Help Wanted is structured as an anthology of minigames that recreate various scenarios from the previous titles in the series, as well as introducing new experiences. Players take on the role of a user testing the "Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience," which is designed to portray the franchise's lore while also serving as a means for the fictional Fazbear Entertainment to rehabilitate its tarnished image following a series of violent incidents at its establishments.
The gameplay primarily revolves around avoiding jumpscares from animatronic characters while completing specific tasks. Players utilize tools such as security cameras, lights, and doors to monitor and evade the animatronics. If caught, players experience a jumpscare, resulting in a game over. Completing levels unlocks harder versions of the same minigames with altered graphics and increased difficulty.
Notable minigames include:
Parts and Service: Perform maintenance on animatronics without triggering jumpscares.
Vent Repair: Solve puzzles to fix ventilation systems while avoiding threats.
Night Terrors: Use a flashlight with limited power to detect animatronics in a dark environment. Narrative
The game's plot is metafictional, centering around a user engaging with the virtual reality game while uncovering a deeper story through hidden cassette tapes. These tapes reveal the troubled development of the game and hint at a sinister presence within the experience, represented by a character named Glitchtrap, who attempts to take over the player's consciousness. The narrative explores themes of corporate cover-ups and the dark history of Fazbear Entertainment, culminating in multiple possible endings based on player choices.
Reception
Help Wanted received critical acclaim for its innovative use of virtual reality and engaging gameplay. It has been praised for successfully blending horror elements with interactive mechanics, making it one of the best-selling VR games on Steam. The game has contributed to the ongoing popularity of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, paving the way for subsequent titles, including Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach released in December 2021.

GameStop stock has experienced a significant surge of over 70%, causing trading to be temporarily halted due to extreme volatility. The stock price crossed above $30 per share during the session, following a steady climb of about 60% over the past two weeks. The rise in GameStop's stock was attributed to "Roaring Kitty," also known as Keith Gill, who reappeared online for the first time since 2021. Gill rose to prominence on WallStreetBets subreddit and YouTube for his bullish predictions on GME. In a recent post on Twitter, Gill shared a meme featuring a video gamer appearing intensely focused on the game. The post garnered significant engagement, with over 81,000 likes and 9,000 comments. This marked Gill's first post on Twitter since June 2021. Gill previously testified before Congress about the massive short squeeze on GameStop in January 2021, led by a group of retail traders. As of now, the short interest on GameStop stands at approximately 24% of the float, according to S3 Partners data. The momentum in meme-related stocks continued with theater chain operator AMC and Trump Media & Technology registering gains during the session. Market analysts warned that short sellers could be in for a challenging ride with these stocks. Despite the recent surge in meme stocks, experts believe it reflects a healthy appetite for risk in the investment landscape. WEEK 9: The Rise of game streaming
Online games were once considered just entertainment, but now, with the strong development of the digital technology age, it is the whole career of many people. Encouraged by the technological breakthrough of the hyper-modern era, social live streaming has arisen as one of the most engaging communities in recent years, enabling live content production and instant based interaction. With the advent of game streaming platforms and the growth of gaming communities, the way we play, watch, and interact with games has become a communication revolution.
The birth of the streamer profession
Streamers are people who perform live broadcasting (livestream) for viewers through an online streaming platform. Game streaming platforms such as Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming have increased significantly in popularity, providing gamers with a platform to broadcast their gameplay live to a worldwide audience. In January 2024, video streaming platform Twitch had approximately 8.36 million active streamers, down from a peak of 9.89 million in January 2021. But still, it is a substantial number, which shows that despite the post-pandemic decline but the demand for using and monitoring game streaming is still exceedingly high.
With a career path closely tied to technological advancements and consisting of the dynamic younger generation, streamers have emerged as symbolic figures of the 4.0 technology era. Gone are the days when the concept of an "idol" was limited to singers or actors on stage; now, they can be virtual companions emerging from computer screens. The success of prominent streamers in today's market partly validates this notion, as they not only gain popularity within the livestreaming community but also progress toward becoming household names, serving as positive role models for aspiring individuals striving for success in their careers.
What was once considered a niche hobby has now evolved into a global entertainment phenomenon, with millions of viewers tuning in daily to watch their favorite streamers engage in everything from competitive eSports matches to solitary adventures. One of the main draws of game streaming lies in its interactivity, allowing viewers to actively engage with streamers in real time through chat features, fostering a sense of community and encouraging prominent levels of interaction. This interactive experience transcends geographical boundaries, uniting gamers from diverse cultures in their shared passion for gaming.
With its soaring popularity and burgeoning viewer demand, game streaming has democratized content creation, making it more accessible than ever for individuals aspiring to pursue careers as streamers or content creators. The Vietnamese market holds immense potential for livestreaming industry growth, supported by factors such as a youthful population, high demand for entertainment, and fierce competition among emerging livestream platforms vying to offer users enhanced experiences and services.
The growth of game streaming has revolutionized the entertainment landscape and had a profound impact on the gaming industry. Developers and publishers now recognize the value of direct interaction with the gaming community through livestreams, Q&A sessions, and exclusive showcases, facilitating feedback collection, generating excitement for upcoming releases, and cultivating loyal fan bases. Additionally, game streaming has become a lucrative industry, with top streamers earning substantial incomes through subscriptions, donations, sponsorships, and advertising revenue, thus attracting talent from diverse backgrounds to join the industry.
However, alongside its numerous benefits, game streaming also faces challenges. Streamers' income is heavily reliant on factors such as popularity and viewer engagement, leading to concerns about the sustainability of the business model and the ability of emerging streamers to thrive in a competitive market. Moreover, ethical and copyright issues arise as streamers strive to create compelling content, sometimes crossing ethical boundaries, or infringing on intellectual property rights, necessitating fair and effective resolution mechanisms.
In conclusion, despite its challenges, game streaming has fundamentally transformed gaming culture and interaction. It has fostered a global community, bridging players worldwide and fostering creativity and growth within the gaming industry. As technology continues to advance and gaming community participation increases, game streaming will remain an integral aspect of the gaming landscape. It is imperative to establish a healthy and equitable environment to ensure that both players and developers can reap the benefits of game streaming.

Week 9 - How did the public change their perception on Video games after the Covid-19 outbreak?
Social gaming refers to online games that encourage people to engage with one another while playing. Games may be "social" in a variety of ways, including commenting and monitoring other players. Furthermore, gaming encourages virtual and real-world community formation. Additionally, the World Health Organization has endorsed the #PlayApartTogether campaign, which was launched by the gaming industry to encourage healthy online gaming behaviors, with a focus on activities that enhance social interaction (Giardina et al., 2021).
The Public Perception of Gaming
Violence: Video games can expose children to violence and increase their likelihood of participating in violent behavior.
Addiction: Games have addictive features, as evidenced by research results indicating excessive gaming participation can lead to addiction (Freitas et al., 2019).
Social Isolation: This issue occurs as a result of the significant time commitment required to participate in games, limiting possibilities for face-to-face social connections (Kabir, 2020).
Gaming During Covid-19 Pandemic
The increasing number of gaming has increased significantly as a result of the epidemic, luring those who previously ignored it completely or who just did it on occasion (Lufkin, 2020). It is also interesting to see the World Health Organization's shift in attitude on online gaming, where they earlier warned about its possibly dangerous and addictive character but now praise its therapeutic impacts on social connection (Kriz, 2020). Approximately 75% of participants reported making meaningful friendships in the gaming environment because online gaming allows people to express themselves in ways that they may find difficult to do in offline settings due to factors such as appearance, sexuality, gender, or age (Griffiths, 2020). According to a major research, 63% of gamers participate in collaborative gaming, with a significant proportion of players receiving social aid from the communities in which they play.
Does the COVID-19 Pandemic Change the Public Perception of Gaming?
Indeed, the Covid-19 epidemic has had a wide-ranging impact on how the general public sees games. Research and studies have provided information on the epidemic's effects on gaming behaviors and player well-being. These are a few important findings:
Increased gaming activity
According to research, during the Covid-19 outbreak, young people's gaming activity rose significantly (Haug et al., 2022). Because of the pandemic and its consequences, individuals spent more time at home and played video games for entertainment and social connection.
Concerns and Public Health Initiatives
The pandemic's increasing gaming engagement has raised some significant concerns about young people's lack of physical exercise, poor mental health, and sleep troubles (Haug et al., 2022). It has been advised that public health campaigns prioritize the promotion of physical activity and develop realistic methods to discourage dangerous gaming behaviors.
Perceived benefits of gaming
Some study suggests that online gaming may improve young people's psychological growth in mental, motivational, personal, and social domains. Furthermore, it has been observed that social gaming during social isolation considerably but marginally reduces loneliness.
Negative perceptions
Negative themes have emerged regarding the assumption that playing video games was a means to pass the time during the epidemic, regardless of the possible benefits (Barr & Copeland-Stewart, 2021).
In conclusion, the Covid-19 epidemic has increased young gaming, and ideas on the consequences of gaming on mental health are beginning to emerge, with both good and negative perspectives stated. Despite the fact that other studies highlight the potential advantages of gaming, public health initiatives are required to address the issues related to lack of physical exercise and mental illnesses.

MARIA
The campus was especially quiet tonight. Everyone on campus had gone home for the winter, except Maria. She sat at her desk, the computer monitor illuminated her face with a blue hue in the otherwise pitch black room.
(gif credit: https://onlineresize.club/2021-club.html)
In one swift motion, she cleared her cluttered desk and swept everything onto the floor, leaving a bag of spicy Doritos behind.
“I’ll tidy later…” Maria mumbled.
Maria opened her favourite battle royale game and put on her headset. She reached her hand into the bag of chips, the crinkle of the bag and the loud crunching sounds emphasised the silence of the dorm. When her avatar popped up on the screen, she wiped the red dust from her fingers on her grey hoodie. She navigated to her favourite map, selected “duo mode”, and clicked start.
Bing!
Maria had been matched with another player who introduced himself as Nick. There was a robotic quality to his voice, but Maria didn’t think much of it, lots of gamers use voice altering softwares to hide their identities. The game began. A small map appeared on the top right corner of Maria’s screen, her avatar was represented with a blue dot and Nick’s a red dot. The two decided to split up.
(audio credit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SardSMw4N-s&t=6s&ab_channel=AudioLibrary)
The two dots moved apart in opposite directions.
Maria's back was hunched and her eyes were glued to the screen in deep focus. In less than twenty minutes, Maria had killed six opponents.
“Wow you’re good!” Nick exclaimed.
Maria awkwardly thanked him for the compliment and continued searching for the next victim. She reached for some Doritos. Nick’s voice boomed into her headphones.
“I love Doritos.”
Maria was caught off guard, “yeah… How did you know I was having Doritos?”
“The crunch.”
“Oh. Fair enough. You wanna come meet me at point 4?.”
Nick agreed.
The red dot moved closer to the blue dot.
Maria continued snacking on her chips as she waited for Nick to arrive, casually wiping the dust on her hoodie again.
“That’s so gross Maria, you better hope that doesn’t stain.”
Maria freezes. What the fuck? She looked around her room, she was alone. Nick laughed on the other end. Maria’s breathing got heavier as she started to panic. She threw her headset off her head, got up her chair, and checked outside her door. The hallway is empty. She was alone.
(gif credit: https://support.blinkforhome.com/en_US/using-mini/2279381)
She glances at the blinking camera attached to her computer monitor. That must be it, she thought. Maria marched back over to her computer and ripped the attachment off. She put her headset back on, though she stayed standing. “What the hell? You some kind of sick pervert or something? What’s wrong with you?” she shouted into the mic. “I’m not a pervert. Why don’t you sit back down?” What the actual fuck? Maria grabbed a pair of scissors that she had thrown onto the floor earlier and cut the wire from the camera attachment. Nick laughed. His chilling, low pitched chuckle sent goosebumps up Maria’s arm.
The red dot was now next to the blue dot, but Nick’s avatar was nowhere to be seen. Maria heard a rustle from outside her window, she inched toward it gripping her scissors tightly in her hands. She slowly reached for the curtain and flung it open. a man was standing outside her window smiling at her.

China has imposed recent restrictions on its entertainment industry, including banning those under 18 from playing online games during the week days. What are the potential consequence of this ? What are the surveillance ?
China has implemented stringent restrictions on its entertainment industry, specifically targeting the gaming habits of individuals under 18 by banning them from playing online games during weekdays ( CNN Business, 2021). This blog explores the potential consequences of this regulatory intervention and examines whether it might lead to increased surveillance.
What are the consequences ?
Shifts in Gaming Patterns:
With the ban targeting weekdays, young gamers may adjust their playing patterns to comply with the new regulations. This could lead to concentrated gaming sessions during weekends, potentially altering the dynamics of online gaming communities. Shifts in behavior may also impact the design and content of games as developers respond to the changing patterns of usage.
Challenges for Online Platforms:
Online gaming platforms and service providers face the challenge of implementing and enforcing these restrictions. This may necessitate additional resources for age verification processes and monitoring user activity. Platforms will need to adapt their systems to comply with the regulatory framework, potentially affecting the user experience and platform dynamics.
Impact on Social Interactions:
Online gaming serves as a crucial means of socializing for many individuals, especially the younger demographic. Restrictions on gaming during weekdays may limit opportunities for social interactions within gaming communities. This could affect the social fabric of online gaming, impacting friendships and communities that have formed around shared gaming experiences.
While the primary intention behind these restrictions is to address gaming addiction among minors and promote a healthier lifestyle, the enforcement of such measures may indeed lead to heightened surveillance. Here are several factors contributing to this concern.
What is the surveillance?
Age Verification Processes:
To enforce the ban effectively, online gaming platforms may need to strengthen their age verification processes. This could involve collecting and analyzing more user data to ensure compliance with the regulations. Heightened age verification may necessitate the implementation of more intrusive methods, potentially infringing on user privacy (Richard M, 2021).
User Monitoring to Ensure Compliance:
Platforms might be compelled to monitor user activity more closely to ensure that individuals under 18 are not accessing online games during restricted hours. This could involve tracking gameplay patterns, login times, and other behavioral data. Increased monitoring raises questions about the extent to which user activities will be scrutinized.
Data Collection for Regulatory Compliance:
Regulatory compliance often requires platforms to collect and submit data to authorities. This could include information on user demographics, gaming habits, and adherence to the imposed restrictions. The aggregation of such data for regulatory purposes might inadvertently contribute to a more surveilled environment.
Integration with Government Systems:
The enforcement of gaming restrictions may involve tighter integration with government systems for monitoring and oversight. This integration could facilitate the seamless sharing of user data between gaming platforms and government authorities, potentially enhancing surveillance capabilities.
Technological Solutions for Monitoring:
The development and deployment of advanced technological solutions for monitoring gaming activities may become prevalent. This could include AI-driven algorithms analyzing user behavior to identify potential violations. While such technologies may enhance enforcement, they also contribute to a more surveilled digital environment.
In conclusion, China's stringent restrictions on youth gaming, while aimed at addressing societal concerns, carry multifaceted consequences. The shift in gaming patterns and challenges for online platforms may reshape the gaming landscape. Simultaneously, the surveillance implications, including intensified age verification, user monitoring, data collection, integration with government systems, and advanced technological solutions, raise concerns about privacy and individual freedoms. Balancing regulatory objectives with the preservation of digital rights is crucial to navigating the evolving dynamics of the gaming industry. Policymakers must tread carefully to ensure that the unintended consequences do not compromise the essence of a free and open digital environment.

“China has imposed recent restrictions on its entertainment industry, including banning those under 18 from playing online games during the weekdays. What are the potential consequence of this? Would it encourage more surveillance?”
Internet usage has expanded more quickly in China than anywhere else in the world (Chiu, C, Lin, D and Silverman, A 2012). In December 2011, China had 513 million Internet users, compared with 67 million in Germany, 121 million in India, and 245 million in the United States (Chiu, C, Lin, D and Silverman, A 2012). According to research by Chin (2023), they use WeChat as the ‘super app’ that stands for multiple ones we use to rule them all. How did China restrict children under the age of 18 from playing internet games during the week? They worked through WeChat. After China carried out restrictions on the industry of entertainment, persons who want to play online games must identify their age by uploading personal information to WeChat. Not only that, but if we want to play China's online games, we must also prove our age.
WHY?
Authorities in China, the world’s largest video games market, have worried for years about addiction to gaming and the internet among young people, setting up clinics that combine therapy and military drills for those with so-called “gaming disorders” (Cyprus Mail 2021). They are concerned about the influence of excessive screen time on young people's physical and mental health, in my opinion. Games like 'He Ping Jing Ying' and 'Wang Zhe Rong Yao' are well-known in China, and the majority of young people like them. The authorities may be concerned that violence in games would impact young people.
Furthermore, it is possible that China developed such limits in response to parental pressure from children under the age of 18. According to the Game Industry Group's study (Zen Soo 2023), more than 75% of minors in China played online games for less than three hours per week, and most parents were satisfied with the new limits. Parents seek to encourage their children to live healthier lifestyles and do better academically, but in my opinion, young people should balance their studies and entertainment, and they should not be prohibited from playing online games.
Impact of this restrictions on China’s entertainment industry
On 1 September 2019, the new restrictions forbid children under 18 to play online games from Monday through Thursday; they can only play for one hour, from 8p.m. to 9p.m., on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (Cyprus Mail 2021). Some young people rely on online games to relieve academic stress, and the restrictions on China's entertainment industry may make them feel stressed. According to what I've seen on the news, many students attempt suicide because they are too stressed about their academic performance. According to research (Bloomberg 2023), academic pressure has contributed to a rise in suicides among young people in China in recent years.
Furthermore, the restrictions on China's entertainment industry may have a serious effect on the gaming industry, particularly those that rely on the youth market. Soon after the news, shares in companies like as Amsterdam-listed Prosus, which owns 29% of video gaming company Tencent, fell 1.45% (Brooke 2021). According to Brooke (2021), there are 720 million gamers in China, with around 110 million of them being under the age of 18. Because these young people often spend their money on games, restricts in China's entertainment industry may result in economic losses for the country.
Would it encourage more surveillance?
In my perspective, China's entertainment industry restrictions, such as those on online gaming for minors, are likely to lead to increasing surveillance. They might encourage extra surveillance by setting age restrictions and monitoring internet behaviour at the request of parents. Authorities might be forced to use stronger methods of verifying the age of users in order to guarantee compliance with restrictions on gaming. This might include the collecting and analysis of personal information, which could lead to increased surveillance. Furthermore, in order to set gaming restrictions at specific times of day, authorities may establish monitoring systems to track a player's online activities; this entails surveillance.
Conclusion
In conclusion, public sentiment and privacy concerns may impact how the government monitors. Increased monitoring might cause privacy concerns and cause problems about the proper balance of regulatory measures and personal freedoms. As with any policy, the effects and reactions will change over time, and the Chinese government may modify its approach based on a range of factors, including public opinion and views of the measures' success.
