Day Twenty-Seven, Part Three: An Excursion to Ayutthaya
A crude stone type of known as laterite was often used as the foundation of temples and in parts of the building that would not be seen, similar to how the Romans sometimes used tufa. Laterite would either be covered by a higher quality of stone or with concrete.
Tumblr media
Bricks were also commonly used, although these, too, would have been covered by concrete.
Tumblr media
The main part of Ayutthaya is Wat Mahathat. Next to it is a similar site, Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
Tumblr media
This city was built by a different king and is also illustrated with a model that depicts how it looked before it was destroyed.
Tumblr media
Its most prominent feature is a series of stupas.
Tumblr media
Some of the Buddha statues remain objects of worship even today.
Tumblr media
An even more active center for Buddhist worship is the nearby Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, which has a large statue of the Buddha, 12.45 meters high and 9.55 meters wide.
Tumblr media
In the old days, it was common for worshippers to purchase a garment for the statue and dress the figure themselves. Nowadays, people can still purchase the garments, but they are simply stacked in a pile, with a thread connecting the offerings to the statue.
Tumblr media
A sign indicates how this system works.
Tumblr media
The temple is now heavily restored. Photographs reveal how it looked prior to restoration.

“There is a light over every person, and when two souls meet, their lights come together, and a single light emerges from them to feel the universal generation as a sea, and oneself as a wave in it.”

🥊 Muay Thai, our traditional martial arts, is riddled with sacred rituals. Among them is the headband, known as Mongkhon, a part of the boxer’s full ensemble believed to imbue the wearer with protection and special powers.

All Holly Fitzpatrick knew was that if she had to go though one more person coming up to her and started an off-key rendition of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” she was going to loose it.
She knew they said everyone had a double somewhere in the world, Holly just wished that hers did not have to be Cyndi Lauper as she looked in the 80’s!
Her having to deal with that the her whole life was what brought her to a place called The Celestial Temple Beauty, Harmony and Repose.
It seemed to her to just be a just a beauty salon, but another file clerk where she worked, a Thai girl by the name of Bettie Mongkhon, who had the thickest Southern twang she had ever heard, swore that the place could work miracles.
So there she was being interviewed by a Ms. Huang Jin Jing who was asked her all kinds of questions that didn’t seem like the sort one would be asked in a beauty parlor, more like word association type things really. “what are these for?” asked Holly “just to see where you would fit in the best.” said Ms. Huang. “Huh?” thought Holly, but played along., they even took a small sample of blood from Holly.
That having been done the Temple started it’s work.
Tumblr media
The whole thing which started early in the morning, was still going on as evening rolled around.
At one point she saw that it looked her hair was being turned a dark brown. “This isn’t just a dye job is it?” she asked. “Oh no,” said one of the people working on her, “you’ll see in the morning.” said the beautician, “in the morning!”  said Holly about to get up and storm out, but thanks to a special brand of herbal tea they had given her she sat back down and found herself falling a sleep. As she was going down the last thing she saw was another beautician wheeling in a large piece of equipment that looked more like something from star trek than a beauty salon.
What ever went on while she was out the job was finally done just after noon the next day.
Tumblr media
Looking in one of the salon’s mirrors Holly Fitzpatrick had to admit Bettie Mongkhon was right, the place did do miracles. Because as promised she no longer looked anything like Cyndi Lauper, no… she looked like a younger version of Lucy Liu! To her surprise Holly regarded all this quite calmly.
“At least no one will be singing at me every day now.” thought Holly Fitzpatrick, or as soon as the paper work the salon had already started for her was done, Fan Dōng Qīng, or Holly Fan among the gwailou.

Day Twenty-Seven, Part Four: An Excursion to Ayutthaya
Outside Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit is a statue that worshippers can adorn with small pieces of gold leaf. Some people put the leaf wherever the statue is bare. Others put it near a place where they themselves are having a health problem.
Tumblr media
Instead of riding back in the van, we traveled by boat along that Chao Praya river.
Tumblr media
On ourway, we passed many other temples, with some golden Buddhas,
Tumblr media
and others with Buddhas painted all in white.
Tumblr media
We also passed the new parliament building.
Tumblr media
As we were coming into Bangkok, I took the only selfie I allowed myself on this trip.
Tumblr media
With the river running high from the rainy season, we barely cleared some of the bridges. For once, being rather short (5'8") was a rather good thing.
We docked at River Center, an intriguing art center in Bangkok. Here, there are easels people can rent in order to paint along the river,
Tumblr media
and a soundproof music study where one can make recordings. Notice all the harps.
