Ich brauche sehr lange von Zürich nach Berlin, aber nicht so lange wie das Geld von A nach B braucht

Vorgestern bin ich in Zürich in einen Zug nach Berlin gestiegen, wegen Sturmschäden an Bahnanlagen aber bisher nicht dort angekommen. Auf einem Bahnsteig wartend merke ich durch eine Benachrichtigung der N26-App, dass außerdem auch kein Geld mehr auf dem Konto ist. Ich bin selbstständig und habe unregelmäßige Einkünfte, da passiert das schon mal.

Ich muss ein paar Aktien zu Geld machen. Ich weiß nicht, warum, aber Aktienverkauf dauert Tage und am Wochenende passiert gar nichts, man darf also nicht eilig Geld benötigen. Weil ich das schon bei vergangenen Gelegenheiten herausgefunden habe, war ich diesmal vorausschauend. Die Aktien sind bereits verkauft, das Geld muss nur noch vom Konto der einen Bank (mit dem ich nur Aktiendinge machen kann) auf das Konto bei der anderen Bank (das auch für Bahntickets, Eis oder Hotelübernachtungen funktioniert) überwiesen werden.

Weil mir die Vorstellung nicht gefällt, mittellos in irgendeiner sturmverwüsteten Einöde zwischen hier und Berlin zu stranden, frage ich im Techniktagebuch-Chat: “Ist von euch jemand bei N26 und hat ein bisschen Geld übrig bis in ca. drei Tagen? Ich sitze am Bahnhof in Hanau, der Zug, mit dem ich jetzt doch mal nach Berlin wollte, fällt aus und auf meinem Konto sind minus 62 Cent. Neues Geld ist unterwegs, aber auf einem erfahrungsgemäß ziemlich langsamen Weg.” Dass auch der Absender ein N26-Konto hat, ist wichtig, weil so das Geld in wenigen Sekunden bei mir wäre und nicht erst nach weiteren unabsehbaren Überweisungslaufzeiten.

Ich klappe den Laptop auf, um die behauptete Überweisung auch gleich vorzunehmen, muss mich dann aber korrigieren: “Haha, es ist noch mal ein bisschen blöder: Geld ist gar nicht unterwegs, ich meinte damit nur ‘ich überweise es sogleich an mich selbst’, aber: Wartungsarbeiten bei der Aktienbank, kein Onlinebanking möglich.” Die Wartungsarbeiten sollen den ganzen Tag dauern.

In der Redaktion hat niemand ein N26-Konto. Ich beschwere mich, dass ich die Qualitäten dieses Kontos schon seit Jahren lobe und niemand auf mich hört. “So werd ich nie Influencer!” Die anderen beratschlagen, auf welchen Wegen ich sonst noch gerettet werden könnte.

Dispo bei N26?, fragt Virtualista. Geht nicht, sie wollen mir keinen geben, genau wegen des unregelmäßigen Einkommens, das dazu führt, dass ich manchmal einen brauchen könnte.

Mia Culpa schlägt Western Union vor. Gegen eine Gebühr von 5 Euro bekäme ich dann wenige Minuten später Bargeld ausbezahlt, aufs Konto dauert es aber, wie sich herausstellt, drei Tage. “Danke, Western Union, dann kann ichs auch zu Fuß hintragen”, sagt Mia.

Alexander Stielau erwähnt Paypal. Markus Winninghoff auch: “Kathrin, man kann ja Geld per Paypal schicken und das dann auf seinem Konto gutschreiben lassen. Wie schnell das von Paypal nach N26 gebeamt wird, ist natürlich wieder fraglich. Setzt auch voraus, dass du dein Paypal-Konto mit dem N26-Konto verknüppert hast.”

Thomas Wiegold weiß Bescheid: “Hm, Paypal aufs Girokonto dauert erfahrungsgemäß zwei Tage, und am Wochenende ohnehin nicht.“

“Bitcoin ginge glaube ich sofort“, sagt Alexander. Das stimmt nicht ganz, es dauert eine Stunde, aber vor allem kann ich mir mit Bitcoin unterwegs weder Eis noch Hotelübernachtung kaufen. “Dann geht so ein N26 ‘Money Beamen’ tatsächlich schneller als eine Bitcoin Gutschrift!?“, sagt Molinarius, und genau das ist einer der Hauptkritikpunkte an Bitcoin, wenn es um dessen mögliche Zukunft als Alltagszahlungsmittel geht. Aber solange niemand ein N26-Konto hat, liegt Bitcoin mit seiner einen Stunde halt doch vor den sonstigen Banken. 

Korrektur: Das mit der einen Stunde stimmt so, wie es hier steht, hinten und vorn nicht, aber um es richtigzustellen, müsste man vorher auseinandersortieren, ob es darum geht, dass Alexander mir einen Bitcoinbetrag herüberschiebt, von dem ich mir dann ein Eis kaufen kann oder auch nicht, oder ob es darum geht, dass ich mit Bitcoin bei einem Verkäufer, der mich gar nicht kennt, ein Eis kaufe (und wenn ja, wie), oder ob es darum geht, aus Bitcoin wieder Euros auf dem Konto zu machen. Und das führt hier zu weit.

Während man mich noch berät, kommt der nächste Zug, und nur acht Stunden später bin ich nach einer Rundfahrt durch die meisten Bundesländer zu Hause. Dort finde ich in meinem Portemonnaie eine mittelgroße Bargeldmenge. Ich habe in den letzten zwei Wochen fast kein Bargeld und gar kein deutsches Bargeld verwendet und hatte den Betrag deshalb vergessen. Gleich darauf fällt mir ein, dass ich außerdem über 50 Euro Guthaben im Spätkauf an der Ecke verfüge. So wird sich die Überweisungslaufzeit wohl überbrücken lassen.

N26 launches Shared Spaces and is now fully available in the U.S.

Challenger bank N26 is announcing two things this week. First, the company lets you share sub-accounts with other N26 users in just a few taps. Second, after a limited beta test, the company is officially launching in the U.S. with open registration.

Shared Spaces could be seen as an alternative to joint accounts. The feature could be particularly useful for groups with more than 2 persons and situations that temporarily require a shared account. For instance, you could use Shared Spaces for a vacation, to split bills with your roommates, etc.

Only a small subset of the company’s user base can access the feature for now. N26 plans to gradually roll out Shared Spaces to all users.

The company is building this feature on top of Spaces. This feature has been around for a while. It lets you create a sub-account and set aside some money in that separate sub-account. You can set savings goal and transfer money on a regular basis.

Shares Spaces is basically a multiplayer version of Spaces. When a user creates a Space, they can invite up to 10 other N26 users to that Space. While the original user remains the owner of the Space, other users can freely deposit and withdraw money from the shared account.

Sending an invite is the equivalent of granting a power of attorney on a Space. The admin of the Shared Space is the only person who can add and remove participant to the Shared Space. So it’s not technically a joint account as joint accounts have multiple owners.

Interestingly, N26 is launching this as a premium feature. You need a premium N26 account in order to create a Shared Space, such as an N26 You subscription (€9.90 per month) or an N26 Metal subscription (€16.90 per month). You can invite free users, but free users are limited to two active Spaces. Those limitations will most certainly foster premium subscriptions.

Unfortunately, you can’t spend money from a Shared Space directly for now. Your card and bank transfers remain tied to your main N26 account. You have to tap on a transaction and tap on “Pay back from a space” to get your money back from a Shared Space.

N26 co-founder and CEO Valentin Stalf told me that there could be a feature that lets you attach different cards to different Spaces in the future.

When it comes to the U.S., N26 started accepting customers in the U.S. in early July. And it looks like it’s been working well as anyone in the U.S. can now download the app and open a bank account. N26 is also launching MoneyBeam in the U.S., a Venmo-like feature that lets you instantly send money to other N26 users.

N26 is also launching perks in the U.S. You’ll get small discounts on some monthly subscriptions if you pay with your N26 card. Current partners include Aaptiv, Blinkist, Luminary and Tidal.
