This week, at Medium, I went long on Joan of Arc, Pauli Murray, and the dozens of medieval trans men who lived in monasteries. Featuring such Catholic deep cuts as:
St. Smaragdos! So hot they had to prevent him from rooming with other monks!
St. Joseph of Schonau! Put on boys' clothes at age 12 to evade "robbers," kept wearing them for the rest of his life!
St. Benjamin de la Cartuja! Couldn't keep a secret, could keep sheep!
And more!

Madonna and Child, Ambrogio da Fossano known as Bergognone (c.1453 - 1523).
Tumblr media
Madonna col Bambino, Ambrogio da Fossano detto Bergognone (1453 circa – 1523).
(English / Español / Italiano)
The Madonna and Child is an oil on panel painting (55.2x35.6 cm) by Bergognone, datable to 1488-1490 and preserved in the National Gallery in London.
Little is known about the small panel. It comes from the Carthusian monastery in Pavia, where it probably decorated a monk's cell and where Bergognone worked from 1486 to 1494. It arrived in the Gallery in 1894, by purchase.
On many occasions the Virgin is portrayed with a book, especially in images where Jesus is still very small.
Mary and her Child are in an interior, beyond a parapet on which rests a small volume open to the pages dedicated to the morning prayers. Behind them, the background opens onto a landscape inhabited by monks and featuring a view of the Charterhouse of Pavia.
