7. Are there any fun motifs?

oughhh one that i fucking looove are wings (herrscher wings in particular) and the way it ties back to kevin's ongoing philosophical debate on why birds fly (and that being a metaphor for humanity and its continued desire to fight for their survival against the honkai). it makes me weep so hard. i'm not sure if that was intentional but it still makes me sick in the head.

its been foreverrr since ive done the elysian realm jkbhsd. maybe its bc of the hexenzirkel event but whats particularly striking to me is the use of stories (ex: the realm having a type writer that types out summaries of things occuring in the realm, mei and kiana promising to exchange stories of the FC/kiana's poems, i believe elysia's backstory was narrated like a fairytale as well. its esp nice considering the elysian realm was their happy ending yk. confirmation that humanity had hope via its visitors (mei in particular) and the only time they all really fought together. this + the parts in chapter 32 (i think) where prometheus uses stories as a metaphor for humanity (and as a result, the herrscher of reason).. whatevr WHO CARESSSS <- guy who cares a lot

kiamei i love the way the late game treats them and i love how their relationship always emphasizes them as equals <3 their genuine devotion to each other and the way they both represent goodness/community to each other makes me weep since both of them struggle with viewing themself as good or human or worthy of company.. also banger lines what the fuck "lofty aspirations such as saving the world, i too understand this. but how can i endure when i know deep down in my heart that compared to the world, you are more important." bronseele FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im such a bronseele warrior but i do think the fact that it relies so heavily on azure waters brings it down esp since i genuinely think they couldve focused on the themes within them even more and made it hit so much harder. but also i will take absolutely no slander on them they make me weep theyre literally just kids who saw the truth in each other in an orphanage that was their first real point of reference for a stable domestic life. they made each other feel normal which is important bc their lives suck ass!!!!!!! the fact that they keep saving each other in part because theyre really the only ones they feel like they can rely on makes me sick

elydenponia i love them i really really really do but they are definitely my fourth favorite hi3 pairing because the flame chasers arc didnt have enough of them to outweigh the insane horses that are kiamei, sakukallen, and bronseele to me. they deserve so much more recognition though of course elysia and edens appreciation of humanities, eden and aponia's grief over elysia, elysia and eden being able to lift aponia out of the darkness, eden and aponia both choosing to stay in the previous era (eden especially because she "belongs in the previous era"), ely's goodbye love song, aponia merging w the elysian realm to honor elysia's memory, eden's sim shattering so that mei could revive elysia's sim and saying that "to be apart of her forever is the most romantic nding" or sm like that, aponia and eden being made to work together and always being paired together in art, apoeden "im the bearer and youre the giver"..., THEYRE SO GOOD.

at what point (if they even do do.) in the story do you think they’ll end up roping her back in?? since she (and A TON of other characters. like cyno. to be fair) has a ton of un-expanded lore that is very, very end game reminiscent ,?

anyways. hmm... w the role she's currently playing i dont think they'll necessarily pull her in for teyvat lore as a whole. if anything i could see them pulling her back for sumeru and dottore lore since that's where her lore connections intentionally shine! i'd like to see her in mondstadt more but i really dont think her role there should be related to mond lore. various list below:

cyno -> obviously her being a narrative parallel of cyno (literally acknowledged in the game btw..) i could see the archon residue somehow working w temple of silence and hermanubis lore.

nahida and wanderer -> this is less likely and i dont even know the ideal way they could add it in now since my ideal for them requires a rewrite of sumeru..... but these three make me sick in the head w the way theyre narratively linked and missed opportunity, especially since collei's religious trauma could've made sumeru and its introduction of the samsara cycle a lot more powerful since itd be another strong way of connecting the religious tension in sumeru to khaenri'ah

and. reading that back thats a bit difficult to follow but i cant phrase it very coherently but my thought process there is like:

devotees -> nilou, dunyarzad (kusanali); the people of the rain forest (rukkhadevata); the people of the desert (al-ahmar); fatui? (tsaritsa)

atheist/treats godhood differently -> collei (antagonistic towards the gods because of teh fatui, hesitantly cautious now); dottore (literally aiming to to ascend a mortal to divinity); khaenri'ah (dislikes the gods at the most and completely neutral to them at the least. keep in mind khaenri'ah's entrance is below sumeru); abyss sibling

oh yk.. -> wanderer (sees godhood as a role he needs to play and becomes an artificial god); the sages (literally kept nahida locked up and tried replacing her with another god); traveler (general neutrality on the archons?)

anyways. all that to say i think in a religious commentary, collei's character would've helped examine the religious tensions in sumeru AND dottore. <- literally a big part of my non-existent sumeru rewrite btw kbsdknj. like. lore-wise it'll be important yes but mostly because it's important to sumeru.

archon biology ig -> i could also seeing them use her to teach us about archon residue kinda like the baizhu story quest.

I was thinking about your bronya & tsaritsa posts earlier today,, and I was wondering if there’s any other characters you think may end up being (or. already are) hi3 expys too? lore/arc wise, or just by design :3

ohhhhhhh you opened up a large can of worms w this one.. ii start visibly vibrating w excitement

general criteria are like. matching voice actors, very similar designs, some overlapping similarities. ie: mei and ei both having things to do with origin, time-fuckery (kinda), having similar designs, both being named raiden, being associated w lightning, sword users, etc. mostly we look at lore for talking about alts :3

lore-wise/confirmed (ordered by nation):

sustainer of heavenly principles -> kiana kaslana (herrscher of the void) of course mhy couldnt go a game without mentioning their favorite child. both share voice actors and similar designs. i also think its really interesting knowing that sirin (whos basically kiana's herrscher persona atp) was the first herrscher of the current era that actively abided by the will of the honkai (this being that exists outside of the honkai universe) and how the sustainer of heavenly principles is likely apart of the primordial one's four shades <- which again. the primordial one and the heavenly principles are pretty certainly NOT from teyvat. images below (note: the upwards pointing ahoge, the eye colors, the yellow powers, the red color schemes between kiana's herrscher of flamescion battlesuit, etc. in order: hi3 kiana HoF, genshin, hi3 kiana HoV, genshin)

venti -> wendy obvious one their names are similar (in chinese the first character of their name is the same and related to weather). they both have some control over the wind w venti being the archon of anemo and wendy being the herrscher of the wind. their designs are also similar if you look at their archon/herrscher forms. wendy's actually from ggz but i dont know enough about hr ggz counterpart to talk about her :( which sucks bc i heard shes written better and w more depth there. visual similarities below (take note: hair, wings, color scheme. in order: hi3, ggz, and genshin)

lore-wise i do think its interesting how HI3 wendy struggles with a lack of freedom while venti is the archon of freedom. (wendy: is wheel-chair bound due to a procedure/experiment gone wrong because of her being a literal child soldier. + being kidnapped by both schicksal and ae + being a narrative parallel to bronya who notoriously struggles with freedom especially in the chapter we meet wendy in)

raiden ei and raiden makoto -> raiden mei also obvious. i dont know where to even begin here. their surnames being the same; both being associated to lightning and thunder; mei and ei being sword-users; even lil things about ei like the fact that she cant cook whlie mei can because mei has a kiana to cook for and ei doesnt!; mei being the herrscher of origin and raiden shogun's auto attacks being named origin; mei having a line about reforging kiana's swords when it breaks as a symbol of strength and raiden shogun's passive being related to leveling swords and polearms. even like story-wise, while i think they did a shitty job w ei, i can see the bits of mei they were going for! the divided identities w mei (the real gentle and compassionate her being represented w makoto, a cold and cruel facade of hers being the raiden shogun, and the in-between version of her that just tries so hard to maintain eternity and change fate as a means of grief being represented with ei). and see. did not include GGZ mei heree bc i dont know enough about her. visuals below (take note the eye color, hair, the red accents in ei's clothing. in order: HI3 mei HoT, HI3 APHO mei, genshin makoto, and genshin ei.)

yae miko -> yae sakura also obvious w their names and designs asjdbjb. also both being mikos, narukami shrine being heavily associated w sakura blossoms, the fox and kitsune inspirations. and!! the medicine-food kiss in one of miko's books literally being something sakura did to kallen. they dont act similarly at all but i think thats part of what makes miko a successful expy. ei acts more like sakura than miko does! and the fact that their stories with losing their sisters and that spurring such intense grief within them is soooooo oughh.... i love eimiko from a multiverse perspective bc i think with it, it allows miko and sakura to be so so linked while also not being very similar, meaning we get more from miko's character if we know sakura but we dont need to know sakura to know about miko!!!! i also of course have to mention the grand narukami sakura tree and yae sakura's connection w sakura trees and grief.. the way the grand narukami's tree is a symbol of ei's grief for makoto AND the site where miko sends off the spirits of the youkai to rest :]. iirc, sakura's GGZ and HI3 lore are similar enough. images below (note: their hair, color palette, ears. in order: HI3, GGZ, genshin)

nahida -> theresa the whitewashing w this one is so ugly it makes me so mad bc story-wise i actually think nahida is a successful theresa alt. i just hate that they used it as an excuse to whitewash her. like. theresa being a clone of kallen whos physical body can only age to 13 and nahida being a small splintered part of rukkhadevata..... nahida being locked up by the sages because they didnt respect her and otto keeping theresa cooped up both because he cared about her and didnt wnat her to get in his way......... nahida being the archon of wisdom and theresa being the principal of st freya......... EVEN LIKE. THE TIME BETWEEN RUKKHADEVATA & NAHIDA BEUNG THE SAME AS KALLEN & THERESA (500 YEARS).. and, of course, nahida's attempts at addressing the discrimination/inequality between the two sumeru regions being akin to theresa's attempts to right otto's wrongs after she becomes schicksal's overseer. also the religious imagery w theresa and kallen veing christian and nahida and rukkhadevata and both being underestimated for their young appearances. not including ggz theresa here. (below is theresa's verdant sky skin, the first battlesuit of hers we see, and nahida. after is kallen and then rukkhadevata. take note the color schemes, braids vs ponytails, height)

al haitham -> su same as nahida it pisses me off so so much they whitewashed al haitham for this. but looking aside from the obvious visual similarities for a sec ok listen hear me out. su's buddhism and association w honkai's realm sumeru AND al haitham, of course, being from sumeru which is a nation heavily inspired by buddhism.... al haitham having connections to mirrors and light.. su literally keeping his eyes closed for the majority of the time......... both being rather quiet...... they do not act similarly though which i think serves them both well :] something abt su having such strong morals and convictions and literally being a fucking hero and carrying a lot of guilt in part because hes a healer who's lost so many while al haitham has a seemingly "uncaring" demeanor (not actually uncaring btw) which is something imparted onto him by his grandma.. visuals below (in order: HI3 su, genshin haitham)

design-wise:

heres a few people have suggested but i just dont agree or theyre only linked through design.

lisa -> rita (fallen rosemary battlesuit especially)

jean -> durandal/bianka

kazuha -> jingwei fu hua

young shenhe, xianyun -> azure empyrea fu hua i do not. get this one tbhes.

theres also welt yang/joachim and zhongli but while i think theyre very fun to think about in tandem from a lore perspective, i really dont think zhonglis inspired by joachim. FUCK I CANT ADD ANY MORE PHOTOS.

you know it would be soooo awesome if you explained Cyno lore/your analysis of him (I’m so incredibly lost; my brain is too full of insane scientists for comprehension of him by himself.)

:3 see the frustrating thing abt cyno is that his character stories barely tell about his lore in the way you’d want it to. his affiliation is stated as with the temple of silence and there’s next to nothing else about them in the entire fucking game. BUT THAT ASIDE!!

from what we know of cyno’s ethnically from the desert but he wasn’t raised there. (his job as the general mahamatra allows him to take visit the desert a lot though. a lot of his work is there.) he made a pact with the god inside of him (hermanubis) and because of this, the akademiya wanted to run experiments on him. he was protected from these experiments by professor cyrus who took him in! he’s cyno’s adoptive father :)

now with the pact he quite literally describes himself as a vessel for hermanubis and he calls upon his powers during his burst! hermanubis initially caused cyno a lot of pain but their relationship somehow got better to the current point of their relationship where they work in tandem as vessel and god.

he and lisa were kinda classmates (they were both spantamad) but lisa is his senior. their relationship is very familial-like :3 (there’s a part in 3.5 windblume where they explain that the darshans can be akin to an academic-based family :’] and she teases him by referring to him with the little brother honorific (弟弟/ didi)

lisa sent a letter to cyrus asking for help in collei’s sake and cyrus sent cyno :3 hence why he came to mond, sealed collei’s archon residue, and eventually led collei back to gandharva ville to live under the tutelage of his best friend, tighnari.

ALSO. he and candace are literally complements to each other :’) (cyno being the sun and candace being the moon, one having the eye of ra and the other having the eye of horus, both sharing a signature polearm, both having connections to either al ahmar or kasala, al ahmar’s faithful priest)

AND NOW PERSONAL HEADCANONS/INTERPRETATIONS BC HE MAKES ME SICK DEAR GOD.

OK SO. this is all in my head btw.

- in my head the experiments cyno was almost subjected to were apart of dottore’s extended attempts to elevate humanity to the gods. (other actual parts of his motive are his experiments on collei and scara).

- cyno recognized collei as someone inflicted with archon residue after reading his letter. i don’t think he realizes both the experiments she was apart of and he could’ve been apart of are linked, but i do think he feels incredibly guilty for not being able to prevent it (even if he quite literally couldn’t have known/done anything)

- in fact! i think part of the reason why he became the general mahamatra is because he believed the experiments he could’ve been subjected to was a show of the akademiya’s corruption. i think he trusted the akademiya very much because cyrus was apart of the akademiya and because he loves cyrus and cyrus loves him so so much :’) i think he wanted to prevent that from ever happening again.

- in my head this is also why he’s so so adamant on keeping to the six cardinal sins.

- i think this is also why he felt so so strongly about figuring out the sage’s corruption and betrayal in the sumeru archon quest. so mcuh so that he quit without mention and went on to do his own investigation and prevention. to me this also explains why he was so distrustful of al haitham to the point of literally attacking him the way he did kfbdjdhdjd.

- also related to the human experimentation but i think it could be compelling commentary for medical exploitation of marginalized communities and cyno being from the desert and that happening to him is sooo.. it’s something. (it’s not perfect of course i’d still rather him yk. not be a fucking cop but.)

- he and collei are very obvious narrative parallels in a way that makes me so so sick especially bc in collei’s vl about him we learn that thinking about the sealing ritual can bring her very painful flashbacks to it. even now she slips up and forgets to refer to him informally. he kinda understands how she feels (though he’ll never get it). he just wants her to be safe. and collei doesn’t know! when she leaves with cyno we know nothing about hermanubis! all we knew is that cyno clearly took inspiration from anubis! AND THAT MAKES ME SO SICK (it’s also a big part of my webtoon spin off au which is a character study following collei and cyno’s way to sumeru and collei’s first few weeks or so in gandharva ville. the entire this is heavily collei-centric of course but the first part is a big character study on cyno and collei and their tumultuous relationship w both each other and themselves.)
