Ghost Pipes
“Hey, Lee!” Billy bellowed from somewhere in the forest, out of sight. “LEE!”
Lee’s pulse rocketed as he whirled and launched from the campsite in vaguely the right direction.
“Billy!” A hand went automatically to his hip, but he wasn’t wearing a gun.
“Lee, come look at this!”
He changed directions slightly, jumping over some roots, and saw Billy’s hand waving above some fronds.
“Hey!” he called, bursting through the veil of obscuring plants. “Are you okay? What—”
Billy sat crouched by the raised roots of an old tree, waving at him with calming, quieting gestures. Lee panted, staring, adrenaline rushing through his system in what seemed now a futile waste. He put his hands on his hips for a second, letting the sight of Billy whole and hale bring his heart rate under control. After a few breaths, Lee made his way through the undergrowth and dropped to his haunches at his side.
“What?” he asked, unable to keep the annoyance from his tone.
Billy extended his fingers toward some tiny, white plants. “These… are ghost pipes,” he whispered, sparing a glance in Lee’s direction.
Lee lifted an eyebrow at him.
“Monotropa uniflora. They look like mushrooms,” Billy went on, hushed as though he could frighten them away. “But they’re not. They’re plants with no chlorophyll, and they feed on mushrooms like parasites.”
“Okay…” Lee had perhaps a negative interest in botany, but Billy was staring at these things like he’d found gold, excitement radiating through him.
“They come up in various folk medicine traditions. The American Ecletics thought it was a good substitute for opium only it didn’t get you high.”
“Where’s the fun in that…”
“The Cherokee say that it puts you beside your pain. Like…” Billy searched for the words, his eyes glued to the ghostly flowers. “Like it’s still there but you can detach from it. See it. It’s not all of you anymore. Emotional, physical, it doesn’t matter. Anxiety,” he added as an afterthought.
Lee’s mouth twitched with a grin watching him. “Does it work?”
“I have to think so. Hey”—Billy blindly pawed a hand in Lee’s direction, grazing his knee—“do we have any vodka?”
“Probably…”
“Can you bring me some in an empty bottle with a cap?”
“Uh. Sure…”
Did they have any empty bottles with caps? Lee pressed up to standing and wove his way back to camp. He downed what was left of the rum, transferred some of the vodka (messily), and headed back, shrugging at Keiko’s bemused expression.
Billy hadn’t moved, and Lee brushed a hand up his back and over one shoulder as he dropped down beside him and offered the bottle. Billy tore his gaze from the plants long enough to smile at him.
“Thanks,” he said, hushed, and touched Lee’s fingers as he took the bottle.
Warmth curled cozy in Lee’s belly at the touch, and he grinned, watching Billy uncap the bottle and pluck the pale flowers from their stems. Billy harvested almost all of them, intentionally leaving a few intact.
“I’m gonna look for more,” Billy said as they stood and he spun the cap back on.
“Don’t go far,” Lee told him. And added, “Please,” when Billy scowled.
“Close enough you can still hear me scream,” Billy confirmed, then smiled and clapped Lee’s shoulder.
Lee patted his hand, mouth twisted with wry humor. “That’s all I ask.”
“Or”—Billy let his hand drop—“you can help me?”
Lee held his gaze, took a deep breath, and sighed indulgently. “Where do we look?”
A smile flashed across Billy’s face as he turned away, peering at the ground. “Same place you’d find mushrooms.”
Lee watched him for a moment and glanced around, thinking. “Rotten trees?” he asked, unconvinced he wanted tramp through the forest for little flowers and yet inexplicably pleased that Billy had asked.
“Yeah, rotten trees.”
“You coulda just said that.” And then he started picking his way through the undergrowth in a slightly different direction.
They returned to camp eventually, the bottle of vodka impersonating a jellyfish aquarium. Keiko examined the bottle skeptically and handed it back, settling her attention on Lee.
“Did you two just spend the afternoon picking flowers?” she asked.
“Harvesting medicine,” Billy countered.
Lee gestured at him, deferring, and Keiko bit down on her laugh. She summoned Lee with a reaching hand, and he dropped down at her side with a sigh and a long drink from his canteen.
“It’s sweet of you to humor him,” she whispered.
He sucked the water from his lips and glanced at her. “I’m not humoring him,” he replied, voice low. “I’m just spending time.”
“But you don’t even like plants.”
A shrug. “I don’t have to.”
Keiko smiled and wrapped her arms around his bicep, hugging herself to his shoulder, and he tipped his head to nestle against hers.
“What’s my thing?” she asked, watching Billy position a bedroll in the shade and stretch out.
“Hmm?”
“My thing. My thing you do just because you like me.”
Lee snorted softly. “Well, there’s this Monarch project…” Keiko swatted his leg, and he laughed, but quickly sobered. “I dunno, Kei. I don’t keep track.”

FINALLY, SOMEONE GIVING ME HOPE THAT THIS FANDOM HAS NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN!!
Showing up late to the fandom, I know, but hey, look, I finally have a fic to show for it! Monarch is a perfect show, and the one that finally got me to pay for a streaming service. Curses!
Words: 6,353
Category: F/F
Pairings: Cate/May, although this is a bit more focused on the friendship of the main trio than solidly a romance fic.
Content Warnings: All of Cate Randa's many issues - depression, survivor's guilt, past cheating, and discussion of suicidal thoughts that falls mainly in the context of the survivor's guilt.
Summary:
They’d locked eyes across the quieting field of reunions, and suddenly Kentaro’s two years seemed to vanish. Suddenly, he and May were back in the middle of their trip around the world hunting Monarch secrets. Specifically, they were back in San Francisco, overhearing Cate’s argument with her mother. That had been the start of what she supposed she and Kentaro had become, now. Any awkwardness that once existed, or still existed, between them was secondary to the fact they both cared about Cate and needed her to be okay. And Cate… was not okay.
Also, Duvall is there (being the cool aunt)

Now I know not nearly enough people are watching the new appletv Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. How do I know that you ask? I cannot find any fanfic about Lee Shaw anywhere, either young Wyatt Russell or older Kurt Russell. And that itself is a damn tragedy because I need that. Also the show is just good if you’ve enjoyed any of legendary’s monsterverse you’ll probably like it.

Part of me wishes that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters were more popular so that there were more fanfics for it...
...but the rest of me thinks about what queer fanfic writers in general are like and is glad that this fandom isn't saturated in fanfics fixated on Billy and Lee and erasing Keiko in the process (which, lbr, is exactly what would happen if most mlm/queer fanfic writers got ahold of this show).

I know almost nothing about Godzilla. I maybe once saw the Matthew Broderick Godzilla comedy thing? I am definitely familiar with Reptar. That is my Godzilla knowledge.
So we watched Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and I'm like I feel like there is lore I'm missing here but the rest of the show is strong enough I don't care.
Last night we watched Godzilla Minus One and I'm just left with a feeling of "Did I not get this part because its referencing Godzilla lore I don't know about or did I not get it because I am unfamiliar with the tropes of Japanese filmaking?"
I liked it, I just feel like I was missing parts. Very much like the experience of reading a fanfic in a fandom I know nothing about. So please, if you have any good links to Godzilla lore, please help educate me. I need to know.

WIP
Lee’s phone rings, shocking him out of a dreamless stupor. He scowls, bleary-eyed, and rolls out of bed, following the sound of the ringing to the phone mounted to the wall by the kitchen.
It’s late.
No one calls late with good news, and he hesitates to answer because there’s only so much bad news one can take. He feels hollow, standing—a lightning-struck tree burned out on the inside. The shape of something once strong.
The phone rings again, and he gathers enough of himself to lift the receiver to his ear.
“Hello?” he says, and doesn’t try to sound awake. It comes out somewhere between a whisper and a croak.
“Lee,” Billy says, sounding distant on the line. “Are you busy?”
His voice sinks in like a dagger, and Lee feels the pain bloom fresh in his chest. “It’s one a.m.,” he says. “No one’s busy.”
Billy sniffs and breathes audibly, a broken and heavy sound. “Lee…” It’s so fragile, his name, the plea wrapped in the ghosting breath of it.
Lee’s eyes fall shut, that plea resonating in his empty places.
“I’ll be right over,” he says.
