when she takes the stage, sora is confident as possible. she knows her better angles and winks at the camera when it is focused on her – and it’s a talent, always knowing when there’s a camera around. she smiles when she has to, gives the crowd a serious, almost sexy look when the song asks for it. like the rest of nightmare she is captivating to watch, her dancing is like a spell.

when she leaves jiyeon knows every single thing she did wrong. a move she didn’t do as powerfully as she could, a note she didn’t hit right enough, how her makeup is not covering a pimple on her forehead. all the netizens can go home, no one criticizes jiyeon as hard as she does.

first she is the sister and everyone knows she has someone else in the industry to look after her. some say she’s not as beautiful as her sister, others say talent runs in the family. on a variety sora smiles and say “please watch her next drama” and makes some news for being such a good sister.

then she’s the member who is looking after her own, and that comes closer to her personality as she will ever allow it. jiyeon is clicked offering another member her coat, and then first lets everyone pick their food before she gets what’s left. some people would say it’s the discipline trainee life gave them, the ones who know jiyeon know it’s her. she can’t stand watching others struggle (and maybe that has to do with trainee life), but it’s who she is.

sora doesn’t say much, she is more on the girl crush end of the girl group spectrum and acts the part. when they go to a variety show and she has to talk sora smiles a soft, monalisa-like smile and answers questions with the right answers; she is kinda vanilla, everyone thinks, and she can’t blame them. she tells anecdotes about her life as trainee and talks about her members with so much love everyone admires. at least they don’t think she’s a bully.

jiyeon talks a lot, at that dorm. she has a lot to say about their music and their performances, she has a lot to say about creepy hosts and seniors who barely look at them like they are second class citizens. she is not mysterious or sexy, she is blunt and always has an answer to any question.

but that is jiyeon, what everyone gets is sora.

BIOGRAPHY

“my parents told me i was an accident.”

it’s what jiyeon tells a fellow trainee when they take a break after dancing for about four hours. she is tired, her muscles feel sore, but she doesn’t complain. no one does. jiyeon drinks her water and focus on not passing out.

“a happy one?”

the girl asks.

“no.”

BEFORE.

it’s not her sister’s fault.

when she was born she was everything their parents wanted: beautiful since a young age – she had crooked teeth, but that could be fixed – talented and sickenly sweet. the worst of all: it wasn’t a façade, yoon jungah was the nicest girl one could ever meet.

jiyeon, on the other hand, wasn’t any of those things.

she was an accident, the product of a night her parents never spoke about more than once: their marriage was an unhappy one, but for the sake of their daughter they stayed together, wanting jungah to focus on her child actress career and not have to worry about divorce trauma (she had enough being in the entertainment industry so young). when jungah was cast to some high profile movie they got too drunk and celebrated the only way unhappy couples know to: making more mistakes.

nine months after jiyeon was born.

a baby is not enough to keep a marriage and her parents should know better. jiyeon is not blamed for the divorce, but she knows.

“have you ever thought about doing this professionally?”

her sister’s voice interrupts her and jiyeon turns around to find jungah leaning against the doorframe, a soft smile on her lips. she is living with her sister now, and it’s not bad, but jungah is barely around, always busy working.

“what?” jiyeon is out of breath and a bit embarrassed her sister caught her dancing like some silly girl. (which she is, but still).

“dancing. you’re good at it.”

“you mean like a choreographer or something?”

jungah ponders the question and shakes her head. “no, like an idol.”

jiyeon laughs, thinking it’s a joke. but her sister doesn’t laugh with her. in fact, jungah has never been more serious. “i got you an audition with midas media, they’re the best.” she smiles and when jiyeon doesn’t say anything she crosses her arms in front of her chest. “next tuesday, 10am, don’t be late.” yoon jungah is the sweetest person one will ever meet, but she can’t take a no for an answer, so jiyeon knows she has no choice.

it’s not like she has any actual talent anyway, it won’t kill her to make her sister happy.

she’s not very sharp, that is what she’s told. her voice has a good tone, but she can’t hold her notes for too long. she’s pretty, but in an ordinary way, nothing that would turn heads.

(“are you sure you are yoon jungah’s sister?” one of the evaluators ask her and jiyeon only nods. “she didn’t leave any beauty for you.”

“it’s ps.” someone else says and the man nods. of course.)

still, they offer her a contract. it’s not a debut guarantee and it can be a huge waste of her time, but jiyeon takes it. being a singer is not her dream – she never had one – but it’s a way out of her sister’s house with her awards and expensive furniture, bought with the money of countless cfs she has done. it’s a way out of her mother’s constant calls asking how she’s doing in a bored tone, as if calling her daughter is an appointment she couldn’t cancel, squeezed in between her yoga class and dinner with her friends.

it’s a way out, it’s all she needs.

evaluations are the hardest thing jiyeon has ever faced and oftenly she cries herself to sleep. no one said it would be easy, it’s what their vocal coach says and she is right, they were promised a contract, not cuddling and parental figures.

the first time jiyeon does more than average on her evaluation she feels like crying, right there in front of everyone, but she holds her tears back.

“they must have seen something in you.” one of her friends tell her and jiyeon smiles.

“yes,” another girl says. “her sister.”

jiyeon folds her hands over her lap and stares at them because she doesn’t know where else to look. the producer is busy mixing her part of the song she recorded with some other girls and doesn’t seem to realize she’s still there.

“i have an older sibling too, like you.” he says, still looking at the mixing table. “he’s a very successful businessman. has an insurance company, the bastard.” he seems to be talking to himself and jiyeon stays quiet, not sure of what she’s supposed to say to that.

the silence stretches, but it feels less awkward.

“sora.” the producer says.

“excuse me?”

“your name.” he finally turns to her. “when you debut. your stage name will be sora.”

not a bad name, she thinks.

NOW.

“so, what do you think?” jiyeon asks.

her sister is the first person of her family who watches their debut mv. she shows up at work one day, grabs jiyeon by the hand and says they will have lunch together and no one says a thing about it, of course they don’t. yoon jungah is everyone’s favorite actress, no one tells her no.

“it’s…. different.” something in jiyeon twists. “i’m not saying it’s bad!” jungah smiles and jiyeon hates herself for loving that smile so much. “i like it, but you know people will find it kinda niche, right?” her sister is sweet as she comes, and also very honest.

“yeah, i don’t think it’s going to be an instant hit.” jiyeon shrugs. “but i like it.” her sister’s smile grows bigger and jiyeon tilts her head, “what?”

“nothing, i like to see you happy, that’s all.”

jiyeon stares at her sister for a moment. is she happy?

yes, yes she is.
