The last thing we want to do as parents is have to fight with our children. So why do we fight. A case of right and wrong, poor behavior, them not living up to our expectations? Want to know how your child is feeling. Share one of your feelings with them. As parents we feel as though we need to suppress our feelings to protect our children. The only thing that teaches them is to suppress their own feelings. So when we are worried about how they feel it is most likely our fault because they model us. The hardest part of raising children is when we don’t know what is going on inside their minds. We sometimes believe we can read their mind...but that is how we could potentially fail them. We need to get them to talk when all they want to do is hide. So to get them to open up. We need to open up and drop that iron clad facade that we stand in front of that shows them that we are these invincible gods. Depression is challenging especially when we as parents aren’t sure what to do. There is no guidelines for helping our children. We see them struggling and constantly wonder what is going on in their mind that could be so bad. They shut us out because taking about it could make them feel worse or maybe they they are ashamed because they feel alone in their sorrow. As parents we must always be vigilant and keep an eye on them but be very careful not to be too intrusive because that too could have sever consequences as they may feel pressured to get better and them having no idea how. So take a step back and give them some space, give them a boost and give them some of what you are going through or went through at their age. These are some of the first steps in building rapport with them so maybe they will open up and share their challenges with you. If anyone has had some success with helping their children with depression would you please let us know what you did. Let’s try and parent out of the box on this one.
