1/18 Norakuro and Atemporality
Norakuro reminded me a lot of Momotaro's Divine Warriors with its use of animals instead of people when portraying war and I can't help but giggle at "Shogun Tonkatsu"🍲. Once again we see a portrayal glorifying violence and softening warfare as well as overwhelming nationalism. The dogs charge through a sea of bullets claiming "it would be an honor to be shot" and dismiss injuries sustained as "just a flesh wound". By depicting warfare as a sort of bickering between animals instead of a bloody atrocity it softens the message while still instilling specific values and serving as a vector for propaganda. Additionally, the closing remark by the pig that "under the rabid dog troop's protection, our country (Japan) will finally have good politics" is incredibly propagandistic. Implying 1. the Japan's politics are historically inferior (not true) ❌ and 2. that they've been so graciously saved from their own inadequacy (also horrendously biased) ❌ . Also, the video version reminded me a lot of Disney's Pete character often seen in the older animations with Oswald or Clarabelle!

_____________________________________________________________
I thoroughly enjoyed Saito's Atemporality. Whether we choose to admit it or not time plays a huge role in our lives and consequently our media. I agree wholeheartedly with the contrast in how time is articulated in Japanese and American media. As Saito explained, American comics are slow because they occur chronologically. Cinema is the biggest "success" for any created work in America and as such these "cinema techniques" also emerge in this form of media. Conversely, manga and manga (especially) occur kairologically. That is, the unfold with time as humans experience it. This is why in AOT the survey corps ride horses through field after field fleeing the female titan for episode after episode or why it feels like it takes 10 YEARS for anyone to serve the ball in Haikyuu. Further in anime there is the aspect of the imaginative realm- where time essentially doesn't change anything. (Ghosts are already dead and Doreamon never ages). Being that Miyazaki proclaimed anime to be the "stepchild of manga" the atemporality aspect he links to the traditional Japanese form of storytelling kodan in which time and space distort according to the passion and expressivity of the characters, kodan like kibyoshi seems to have played a big role in manga/anime.

Hey I was a bit hesitant to ask for a Tougen Anki request-
Hc of Masumi, Nekosaki, Ousuke with a physically affectionate partner? Like the partner likes to give random hugs, a bunch of kisses and a lot of cuddling?
No need to be hesitant!! I'm glad you decided to send the request :))
Btw hope you like it^^
Tumblr media
Masumi freezes the moment your arms wrap around him. He knew it was coming - he had just heard your footsteps getting closer and closer, despite your attempt to surprise him. What was unexpected was not the gesture, but the feelings which derived from it. He would stare at you with that mocking smile of him everytime you would lean in, kissing him on his forehead or hugging him.
You were used to his remarks and teasing attitude, but you could feel there was something different in his smile whenever you showed him affection - maybe it was the way he seemed to be thinking about something you couldn't comprehend.
It made him feel like a human being - frail too - but he knew he deserved it. The warmth of your embraces soon became one of the main reasons he had to survive, to come back mission after mission.
Tumblr media
Nekosaki pretends to despise your display of affection - he says he is too tough for something like that, as a member of the combat unit. Which is actually pretty inaccurate, since it's well-known around the Oni Corp that whenever you pull him close to you, Nekosaki starts purring like the cat he is. He think it's embarassing, you think it's cute - which makes him feel even more ashamed.
He acts tsundere-like even when it's just the two of you. Despite his unwillingness, you've lost count of all the times he had fallen asleep while you were embracing him. He didn't really know how to reciprocate your affection, but those demonstrations of yours made him feel at ease. You felt like the home this stray kitten was unknowingly looking for.
Tumblr media
Ousuke is quite the passionate one, so it's a competition about whose the most affectionate between you two. If you hug him, he'll carry you in arms all around the facilities without letting you go. If he gives you a kiss before leaving for work, then you are not letting him leave for work anymore. One day you are the winner, one day he is. Other days you both admit that it doesn't make sense to compete - but the next day you'll start all over again because you find it endearing.
The other Momotaros find it difficult to understand how you can bee so carefree and chill, when everyday you are risking your lives against the Oni, yet it's because of that love that you are able to carry on, to not fear the shadow of death always approaching you. It might seem senseless, but as long as you have each other, you won't be defeated.

like. I am this infamous figure to demons, I and my family for generations have protected Onigashima, I have been raised since birth to hunt and kill demons. so the second yin and jin step into my line of sight my only thought is MURDER HGKFDHGKJFD
the only way I wouldn’t kill them on sight long enough for us to get to know each other is if I was socially obligated to be nice to them hgjkdhghg so I came up with a scenario! The Momotaro corp is throwing a huge party on Onigashima, and as the face of Momotaro co. I have to attend and be buddy-buddy with sponsors and shareholders. I invite MK and the crew and instruct them to BEHAVE because this is a very important fancy party so they can’t ruin it but of course they get into trouble. while I’m trying to stop everyone from embarrassing me and crashing the party Yin and Jin appear in disguise as they were invited because they own Speedy Panda (this is before they went bankrupt LMAO). I realize its them and immediately go to confront them and kick their asses but they smugly remind me that it would look pretty bad if I, the successor of the legendary Momotaro, let two demons on Onigashima which has been demon free for generations and it would be even worse if I made a scene at such a fancy party with a lot of important people. My grandmother and mother have been growing impatient and irritable because of MK and crew’s antics. So, my hands are tied. Yin and Jin use the chance to tease, taunt, flirt, and annoy the hell out of me and I’m already stressed out trying to keep MK and crew in line ghgjkfhfd then even worse, Sun Wukong comes to crash the party!! because OF COURSE he would crash a party he wasn’t invited to and was preemptively banned from HKJGHJKGDFHGD while I’m freaking out and monkey king is eating up the guest’s amazement and praise, Yin and Jin sneak away to cause problems hgkjdfhgf when I try to get him to leave Sun Wukong would pull me into dancing with him 😳 and to keep up with professional appearances I go with it but end up having fun. then my mother and grandmother storm up to us and get angry for interrupting the party but instead of getting mad at Sun Wukong they berate me and publicly humiliate me in front of everyone. I’m just going to take the verbal abuse so Sun Wukong jumps to my defense in his smug, laid back jokey way, making subtle jabs at them that pretty much translates to “Back the fuck off.” hgjkfdgdf and his jokes actually get a laugh out of me, which only piss my masters off even more. But before my mother and grandmother can yell at us, Yin and Jin burst in with whatever mystical artifact they stole from Momotaro co. to destroy all their enemies with. Me, Sun Wukong, MK and crew all fly into battle together and beat the CRAP out of Yin and Jin hgkjhgdjffdg

Now that I’m done with my exam I have more translations I want to do (but probably not the sorts of translations anyone is looking for, haha), and I want to clean up my tags, and I want to write more fanfic, but first I want to goof off by filling in my own silly Kimetsu no Yaiba survey (feel free to steal it from that link).  And dang it, I’m doing it with goofy things I made on the official character generator, too.
Tumblr media
1. So you’ve decided to join the Demon Slayer Corps! What brought you here? Typical story, my whole family got killed by demons. The only way I’d take up some a dangerous profession is if I didn’t worry about giving my mother a heart attack with all her worrying for me.  That, or I faked my death in advance so she could skip the worrying part. Duty calls! 2. Wow, that’s terrible. And how did you prepare for the Final Selection? I started by practicing Flower Breathing under an elderly lady, and I took it very seriously. She took me under her wing, but sooner or later we both noticed that if I was killing flowers left and right with both my black thumb and swinging swords around, it probably wasn’t appropriate for me to continue in that style.
Tumblr media
So, Flower-sensei had me take the official What Breath Should You Study quiz and since I got Wind, she helped me find a Wind Breath cultivator.  We got along alright, seeing me off to the Final Selection was sort of routine and he just told me not to die.
Tumblr media
3. What was the worst injury you sustained, or the closest you came to death? We’ll get to that.  4. Well, you survived, that’s good! Now that you’re in the Corp, what does your haori look like? This! Flower-sensei gave it to me! I’m a little embarrassed to use it since I failed in Flower Breathing, though. Makes a Wind Breath user like me stick out, too. But I like that the colors remind me a little of the Flame Pillar’s haori, I saw him once from a far. The Pillars are all *so cool* and I wish I could be like that someday.
Tumblr media
(Fun fact: Actual gift from actual sensei used in actual martial arts.)
5. Your crow doesn’t have a name! What name do you choose?  Sasami, as in “chicken tenderloin.”
6. Do you prefer solo missions or working with friends? Solo, but I’m cooperative in groups. 7. Be honest. How scared are you?  It’s less a matter of being scared to fight and more a matter of finding some of the demons really creepy looking. So humanlike, yet not. Jeepers creepers, some of those things have faces that’ll keep you awake at night. Since this is the Taisho era, it’ll still be a few decades until someone invents the phrase “Uncanny Valley.”
8. Oh… oh dear. This isn’t good. Looks like you got turned into a demon. How did this come about?  Well, none of it was intentional. This was all one big mishap.  See, I was on a group mission and wound up fighting in close range with a demon. I managed to kill it, but it had pretty much torn me apart by then. The other Corp Members had their hands full with other demons and I can’t blame them for assuming I was dead, and thankfully that’s what got reported to my Senseis (no seppuku on my accord, please!).  But some of that demon’s blood got in my injuries, and next thing you know, I was a blank slate with a whole new outlook on life! And an empty stomach.
Tumblr media
9. I see. So what sorts of people do you like to eat? You know how someone can spend their whole life striving, working hard to improve, never giving up, but still failing anyway? That disappointment is delicious. Their unfulfillment always leaves me craving more!  10. Sounds gross to me, but whatever floats your boat. What are your thoughts on that, you know, that one guy, he whom we shall not name? Oh, he’s terrifying. In the best way, of course. I’m still sort of a new demon, I hope I don’t meet him any time soon. 11. Got any cool characteristics or Blood Techniques? Not quite yet, I’m just the classic send-Momotaro-to-slay-the-barbarians kind of demon with cute little horns.  12. Oh… whoops. You died. Happens to a lot of demons. Care to describe how that happened? I was enjoying myself just fine when I happened to come across a Demon Slayer with obnoxiously bright hair and just as obnoxious of a voice, but then it occurred to me... wasn’t this the Flame Pillar, Rengoku Kyojuro!? “I am,” he confirmed.  I squealed with demon delight and asked, “Can you--could you please---say that one line? You know? Set-your-heart-aflame? I love that line.”  “I hate demons and prefer not to answer their requests,” he said, then added, “but I don’t see why not. KOKORO WO MOYASE.”
Tumblr media
Hearing those famous words straight from a famous Pillar made my demon fangirl heart burst with the flames of a thousand suns, and I died on the spot. In the end I was just another Rengoku obsessed demon, nothing special. The end.

29 for the angst prompt? ^^
@rei-ryoku I am so utterly sorry this took so long! Your patience has been so appreciated and I hope you enjoy! (I indulged myself at the end, so hopefully the turn later is just as you hoped.)
Angst 29. “I love you.” “I’d rather you didn’t”
"I love you," the words were out of Chizuru's mouth before she even realized she was speaking them aloud.
Okita Souji, previously the Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Unit and recent addition to the Fury Corp, had just moments before her confession been indulging in resting his head upon her lap and gazing up at the beauty of the moon. The peaceful serenity had lulled her into a fall sense of comfort and security, the thoughts and emotions pulsing through her heart spilling over her lips without pause. As fear of discovery and rejection laced her soft brown eyes, his dulled and he slowly pulled himself up from her lap. She knew he was going to reject her before the words formed. She had ruined their intimate moment, foolishly assuming he felt the same way. She wished she could pluck her words back from time itself and tuck them safely back into her heart. As she braced herself for a hostile denial, he sighed, eyes turned to the ground before the engawa.
"I'd rather you didn't," Okita-san muttered, an unnamed somber emotion casting over his features.
Chizuru snapped her head up, tears welling within her eyes and lip trembling against a full sob. Her secret was out and her wildest fears coming true. She loved a man who was most likely unable to reciprocate her affection. She should have known better, she bullied herself inside.
There was no explanation as he rose and began to make his exit, halting upon the engawa. For her part, her heart was breaking and she muffled her sobs within her cupped hand.
He paused for what felt like an eternity, neither of them able to breach the silence as this moment was a crossroads and they were highly aware of the fact. If he walked away, it would be a permanent choice and change their dynamic going forward. It was a symbolic rejection, the action speaking more poignantly than any words could express. He was about to leave her behind and her heart ached for him to stay.
"I'm sorry," he whispered nearly imperceptibly before he casually strode off into the darkness and she lost sight of him.
The simple apology stayed her tears and the longer she turned the moment over in her mind, the further she became dissatisfied with his response. An apology acknowledged his own remorse. It signified the wish for different circumstances or perhaps the ability to love her in return. Whatever the cause if the simple little phrase left Chizuru unresolved, furrowing her tiny brow in the direction he had vanished. After a long moment's pause, she decided that whatever the reasoning, if she had unburdened her heart to him at the very least he owed her an explanation.
Their relationship going forward always held an unspoken tension, as if there was always more to say. She would have said his behavior was unchanged, save for the fact he no longer lounged on her or sought her out unnecessarily. He had clammed up, but she could not fathom as to why. Okita Souji was a difficult man to understand but she usually found a way to make sense of his view. None of it made any sense for her. Her questions bubbled within her.
That was, until he stepped into the path of speeding bullets aimed directly at her. As she held his unconscious body and tried to stop the bleeding as she cried out for help, the view settled within her heart. Those were not the actions of a man who did not care for her. She was in his way, very much so, but he chose to rise above and protect her. He always chose to protect her.
It was sometime before he had the strength to remain awake, let alone respond to her internal quandary. She nursed him, allowing her love to spread throughout her actions. Every blotting of sweat or holding his hand was an unspoken declaration of love. The day arrived though, as he sat propped up in bed with as many pillows as they could find. Yamazaki-san was giving Okita-san a lecture, but Chizuru's heart was not in pacifying their relationship. Exhaustion mixed with a growing impatience toward his unexplained behavior and she finally blurted out with:
"You owe me an explanation,"
For a moment, the two men were stunned into silence as their eyes widened at her uncharacteristically brisk tone. Yamazaki-san was fully perplexed, but Okita-san's shock belied an entirely different emotion. Resignation won over his face and he sighed in equal parts fatigue and acceptance. She had backed him into a corner and he knew he could not escape.
"Hai, hai. Do you mind if Yamazaki-kun finishes up his lecture before we get into this?" He asked, a weak smirk tugging the corner of his lip, "I thought this might come up eventually. I'm surprised it took this long,"
"I wouldn't have to lecture you if you would just think for a moment, Okita-san, " Yamazaki could not withstand to retort and followed up with, "And, is there something I should be aware of?"
Okita-san shook his head.
"It's private," he replied with a slow blink.
"Then, I'll see myself out," Yamazaki nodded, halting in the shoji frame to point at Okita-san, "Keep an eye on him, Yukimura,"
She bowed her agreement and focused her eyes on the man before her. He was fiddling with the hem of his blankets and biting at the corner of his lip. She wasn't the only one who hadn't been able to voice the subject.
"Why?" She breathed, an imploring look shimmering within her eyes, "Why did you do it? Why would you step in front of a loaded gun for a woman who was in your way?"
"That's not really what you want to ask, because I can't give you a definite answer there. It was my duty to keep you safe. You just can't protect yourself, ever-"
"Then, why don't you want me to love you?" She whispered.
He sighed shakily, blinking upwards at the ceiling. A beat passed between them and she patiently awaited him to speak.
"I'm broken," he finally replied with a somber little smile, tears welling in his eyes, "I'm not good for you. I'm not Momotaro, some warrior hero to rescue you from the oni. I'm a murderer. I have blood on my hands... no. I have blood splattered over my life. You say you love me, but you don't know me. Where I've come from, who I am. What makes me who I am. Do you know the story? My first kill, did the others tell you?"
Those green eyes leveled to her round brown ones, showing a brokenness she had never seen in full, only caught mere glimpses of. Her heart tried to leap out of her chest to dart towards his, compassion seizing her. She wanted to erase all that pain, but there was a level of fear. She was about to know the man he was and she would have to handle his fragile emotions with care. He was about to trust her with his heart.
"No. They never told me," she verified, now becoming the one to bite their lip.
"I killed a comrade in cold blood. I found his plan to kill Kondou-san. I lured him out for a drink and killed him on the way back." Tears raced down the sides of his face as he continued the tale, "It wasn't noble. It wasn't an accident. It was the moment I became the Sword for the Shinsengumi. The man chosen to aid in seppuku. Could you love a man like this? I'm not safe for you, let alone good. I'm a wicked man and a tyrant. My name evoked fear in the hearts of Kyoto. That's not a lovable man. Even Kondou-san doesn't know how black and distorted I am inside. I warned you, didn't I? That you shouldn't get involved with me. You are everything that is good and pure. You're an angel. I'd taint you. I'd drag you to Hell. I don't understand it, because I tried to push you away. Oh, Chizuru, please try to actually see me. I'm evil, okay? I'm a monster. Look at me. I'm a beast. I have no remorse, no qualms for what I've done,"
"Then," she began, eyes filling with tears, "Why are you crying?"
His eyes went wide and before she could process her response, he had doubled over the blankets and started sobbing like the broken man she could finally see he was. She did not see evil before her, just someone who had lost their way tangled in doing the dirty deeds of others. He had lost the man he was somewhere in there, but she desperately hoped she could show him the brightness she had seen. The kindness locked away inside the box where he kept his heart.
She sidled up next to him, pulling him against her chest as she shushed him gently, stroking his hair. He curled up in her arms, his efforts to stifle his wails becoming more difficult as he released sorrows he had bottled for years. One simple question had undone the formidable First Unit Captain of the Shinsengumi.
"You can't just do that," he bawled, nuzzling his face onto her chest, "You can't just put your tiny hands on my life and fix it. I'm crazy. I'm messed up. I'm distorted and a liar and demented..."
"No, you're just hurting," she assured him with a kiss to his head.
"You can't just say that! You can't just love me!"
"Why not?"
"Because..." he whispered, sniffing to try to rettain his voice, "I want you to. I want you all for myself. I want every little scrap of kindness. I'm a stray cat, Chizuru. If you feed me once, I won't stop coming back for food. If you take me in, you can't ever abandon me. Once you live with me, you won't want me anymore,"
"Oh, Okita-san. Silly, silly Okita-san. What have I been doing all this time, living in the headquarters? You threatened to kill me so many times, I came to realize you might actually mean 'I love you,' "
He suddenly lifted out of her grasp, his lips crashing onto hers. Chizuru was taken so aback, she fell backwards onto the tatami as Okita accidentally pinned her to the floor with the sheer size of his body comparatively to her own. His hands shook as he cupped her cheek, tentatively working his mouth over hers before he hummed and eased into their embrace. She wound her fingers into his hair, unintentionally pulling out the tie for his top knot.
"I heard shouting is everything..." The voice of Yamazaki-san sounded and stopped as abruptly as he did within the door.
"I fell... I don't need help... get lost..." Okita Souji huffed, his eyes meeting hers as a mischievous smirk played about his mouth.
They both heard the shoji shut without reply and burst into giggles. Whether it was the mounting stress of their lives or the high from their kiss, neither could verify. When the moment had sobered, Souji planted a couple's kisses to her neck before curling up beside her on the floor, his sides heaving in a breathless euphoria. He lay his head upon the crook of her neck, stroking his fingers over her arm as it lay hidden in her sleeve.
"A-Ai-Aishi-Daisuki," he whispered, pulling her fingers to his lips and kissing every fingertip, "Can you believe that? I love you. That's why I wanted to keep you safe, even from me. I love you. I love you, and I will always protect you above everything,"
"Okita-san..." she gasped, giving him a tender hug until he yelped, "Sorry... I just got so overjoyed..."
"Hmmm, call me Souji-san, ne?" He begged tenderly, closing his eyes with a relaxed sigh, "When it's just the two of us, you can call me Souji. I want to hear you say it,"
"Okay. Souji-san?" She asked hesitantly.
"Yes... that's great. What is it, Chizuru?"
"Aishi-Daisuki," she informed him tenderly, kissing his forehead.
He giggled. Actually giggled.
"Aishi-Daisuki, Chizurumaru," he grinned playfully.
"So, I'm a sword now?" She laughed quietly.
"Yes. If I am the sword of the Shinsengumi, you are my companion piece. The wakizashi of the Shinsengumi," Souji purred, planting several kisses to her inner wrist.
"Oh, Souji-san!" Chizuru gasped, tears of joy welling in her eyes, "That is the highest honor I've ever been given.."
He placed his hand upon her forehead, giving it a playful little shake.
"I now dub you as Wakizashi of the Shinsengumi. Because a sword can love a sword. Aishi-Daisuki, Chizurumaru, "
He yawned widely, removing his hand to place around her in a snuggly hug.
"Aishi-Daisuki, Soujimaru," she teased back, tenderly stroking his hair to lull him to sleep.
He gave one short laugh and was asleep within an instant. Chizuru remained as she was, soaking in the warmth he radiated. No matter what happened, she was loved by a tender and very playful man. A man she adored. Her Okita Souji.

Project Sakura Wars will be set twelve years after the events of Sakura Wars 5: So Long, My Love. In this new entry, the Combat Revues, which previously protected nations from evil while working incognito, are well known to all.
Indeed, the Great Combat Reveue World War is more of a global sporting event, in which the Combat Revues from across the globe gather in Japan’s Imperial Capital to compete in a tournament. These disparate groups then compete to determine which country’s kouma-crushing corps reigns supreme. By the time Project Sakura Wars begins, two such events have already taken place, and the nations are gathering in the Imperial capital for the third. What should be a peaceful event, though, suddenly takes a turn for the serious.
Sega’s email communication describes the story as:
The stage is set in a romanticized version of 1940s Imperial Tokyo. 10 years ago, a cataclysm resulted in the devastating loss of the Imperial Combat Revue of Tokyo, the capital’s global defense force operating out of the Imperial Theater. The theater has since fallen on hard times and risks closure. As captain of the new Tokyo revue, it’s up to you to mend the hearts of your troops and restore the Imperial Theater back to its former glory!
Project Sakura Wars will receive an anime series, which will air in 2020. Manabu Ono (Sword Art Online: Alicization, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere) will direct the project at Sanzigen and co-write the scripts with Tatsuhiko Urahata (Hi-Score Girl, GATE). Sakura Wars composer will score the soundtrack. Ohji Hiroi and Sega are credited with the original concept.
According to their Tokyo Game Show stream, the project will be a side story that supplements the events of the game.
Project Sakura Wars was first revealed on April 14, 2018 at Sega Fes, and was originally tentatively slated to launch prior to March 31, 2019. On April 19, 2019, Sega Holdings President and CEO Haruki Satomi confirmed that the project will be “more than a game.”
A western release was not confirmed until March 29, though Japanese Asian releases were confirmed to be in the works.
Sakura Wars is an original project by Sega CS2 R&D (later Overworks) and Red Entertainment. Ohji Hiroi (Moeyo Ken, Far East of Eden), Satoru Akahori (Saber Marionette J, Martian Successor Nadesico), and Kosuke Fujishima (Ah! My Goddess, You’re Under Arrest!) are listed as the original creators of the franchise.
The first title appeared on the Sega Saturn in 1996. The initial entry, while released only in Japan at the time, was estimated to have a 200,000 lifetime sales goal. The title sold 205,270 units in its opening week, which was roughly 57% of the launch shipment. At the time, the title was seen as having the largest debut for a Sega title to date. It would go on to move 359,485 copies throughout the Saturn’s lifespan.
Since then, the title has gone on to spawn:
Five main-line titles
Fifteen spin-off games
An anime TV series by Madhouse
Five anime OVA series
Seven manga and light novel adaptations
Sixteen high-profile live stage shows
The final main-line title in the series, Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love was released in North America by NIS America. The title is available on Sony’s PlayStation 2, as well as Nintendo Wii console.
