hold your horses [franmaya zine fic!]
with art by the amazing @cassiferlynnart!!!! and hold your horses before you read the rest of this post because LEFTOVERS ARE STILL OPEN:
but not for long!! get in before this gorgeous zine is gone for good!
name: hold your horses fandom: 逆転裁判 | Gyakuten Saiban | Ace Attorney relationship: F/F wordcount/chapters: 1/1, 2k additional tags: the genre i invented called psychoanalysis via horsies is BACK BABY,my usual established relationship but still early on vibes, testing the waters of how we're going to make this work (via horsies),maya hates being looked after and franziska has never shared a hobby with anyone in her life, this goes about as well as you expect, has a BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS AMAZING collab illustration by CassiferLynn linked at the end!!
“Well!” trills Maya when it becomes obvious Franziska has finished tacking up the horses by herself. “Let’s get going!” “Yes. Let’s.” Neither of them move. Franziska’s tongue ties itself into knots. “Where are we going?” She has not thought this far. And she does not know this place at all, aside from the places that were a murder scene, which she remembers in far too much detail. “I thought… Of course, you haven’t been outdoors here that much. Let me think…” Something curls hot in Franziska immediately, watching Maya’s brow furrow, at already having wasted all the goodwill Maya should possibly have to offer in getting to this point, and yet there still somehow being more. “We can just go out back, in the field? When tourists get bored with the shrine they hike up to Mt. Komagatake, so there must be a trail somewhere.” Maya has things handled. Somehow, this feels worse than when Franziska was pretending to be in control.
Franziska and Maya go for a trail ride in the Kurain mountains. Written for Lavender Blue: An Ace Attorney FranMaya zine.
Read it now on Ao3!

Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Sareee (Stardom All-Star Grand Queendom 2024)

Good shit, 10/10.

Week in Review
10/08/2023 – 10/14/2023
Sunday
I have a tradition on Sundays I like to call, unimaginatively, Manga Sundays, where I catch up on all the manga I follow on the Manga Plus app.
MamaYuyu has unique and interesting panelling as always, but I’m not sure if the story can stand on its own.
Handsome Must Die is just stupid fun and I’m glad that the nice looking kid flipped the bird and that the evil kid is getting his proper redemption arc.
Undead Unluck is fantastic, and I love that Latla and Rip share the leg weapon now – this feels like one of the first big shifts in a character setting we’ve seen this loop, other than everyone avoiding/circumventing their tragedies, which are a given.
The Ichinose Family has completely lost me, but at least the emotional moments still come through clearly – Taizan 5 definitely has a flair for melodrama (this isn’t a dig).
The power stats in the Oshi no Ko are fun, and the last page was definitely impactful.
Dandadan is as chaotic as usual, and I can’t wait to see what supernatural or sci-fi or who even knows at this point power up the Class Rep gets from being caught up in this friend group. I loved her vampire fantasies, they felt very true to what a teenage girl would write self-insert fanfics about. I do wish Momo and Okarun would get together already, but that’ll probably have to wait until after this new ghost themed arc.
Marriagetoxin is alright, I’m glad to have a romance themed chapter again after all those action chapters I skimmed through. Erina is a cute little boss.
Magilumiere’s new shady private investor character is fine, I like his design but I don’t really care about his investing strategy when I already know him joining the team is a foregone conclusion.
Akane-banashi is a series I keep up with purely because it’s about rakugo (and I like Karashi), but it’s never really grabbed me despite being about a topic I enjoy. I don’t know, most of the art is pretty whatever to me, and its attempts to make rakugo seem interesting don’t interest me, even though I already like rakugo. I have no idea how it has captured the attention of the typical Shounen Jump crowd, but I suppose I’ll be grateful for it since I’m invested in the wellbeing of rakugo as an art form.
One Piece…I’ll admit that I don’t really know what’s going on in One Piece anymore, since I can’t keep track of all the characters and politics and powers straight in my head and I tend to just skim chapters until something cool happens. The old man spider looks cool, though I have no earthly idea why he’s so revered and feared. Eventually I’ll pick up the anime again – I’ll probably retain things better when I watch them as whole arcs at a time. (I also want to rewatch Water 7/Enies Lobby…)
And finally, I always leave Cipher Academy for last on Manga Sundays, because I love Cipher Academy soooooo much. I love all the characters, all the character designs, the puzzles, the art, the Nisioisin-isms, the list goes on. The first Tayutan vs Iroha Code Battle absolutely blew my mind and I felt a renewed love for the comics medium, so I’ve been hooked ever since. This chapter was really fun: I feel a little proud of myself for seeing through the ‘trick’ this time, even though it was pretty blatantly telegraphed with the close up on the arrow. Nohime is also looking gorgeous as usual, and I’m happy to get some lore about her. And of course Byu is checking out the tables for hiding spots. I wonder if Iroha and/or Shitsuke let the bomb explode to open a hole down into the lower floors? Feels very Stardew Valley Skull Cavern to me.
My friend and I have been watching House M. D. together over Discord – she’s watching for the first time while I’m rewatching. Today we finished off S3, and none of the episodes left a particularly deep impression on me. I’m going to miss the Chase Foreman Cameron team though.
Monday
The new Make Some Noise episode is okay, I’m not really vibing with the prompts…but I always enjoy seeing Jacob Wysocki, he’s one of my favourite Dropout cast members.
More House M.D. – the competition style arc at the start of S4 is pretty fun, but the medical mysteries are not interesting me in the slightest. The House/Wilson moments are great though.
I tried watching the first episode of Ascendance of a Bookworm, and it’s cute enough, but the low production quality is a pretty big turn off…I think I’m just going to read the manga. But this means that Fall 2019 gets a whopping 0 shows in my Anime by Season statistics, which is a far cry from the 14 shows of Spring 2016 (then again, I was in high school at the time, which meant that I had more free time and lower standards). Also yes…I’m so far behind on anime that I’m still working through 2019 shows…
Tuesday
Started the day off with the latest Chainsaw Man chapter, since I’ll get spoilers on Twitter if I left it until Manga Sunday. I would love to be a Devil Name Consultant.
Read through the first part of the Ascendance of a Bookworm manga. I like how tiny and cute Myne is, and these types of isekai stories where the protagonist uses their knowledge of modern technology to advance in society are just about the only kind of isekai I can tolerate. It’s a bit silly that she just happens to know all these handicrafts from doing things with her mom though. I think they could’ve just explained it with her already established book obsession. It’s interesting that she revealed her true self to Lutz so early – I haven’t read a lot of isekai but it doesn’t seem like this is a common trope. Usually it seems like the protagonist assimilates easily into their new world and has fun adventures, but this is an interesting development to their relationship. I also love the business wheeling and dealing, and it’s always fun when it’s a little kid doing it. Some of the plot progressions felt a bit weirdly paced to me, and the manga’s structure isn’t anything too inspired, but the story is interesting enough to keep me reading.
Skimmed through the latest chapter of Gakuen Babysitters. I basically only read it to get a dose of cuteness, but I still hang on for the Ryuuichi and Hayato interactions, which are few and far between these days.
Also read the latest chapter of Scary Campus College University. I’m not really digging this Cultural Festival arc because I don’t really care about the backstory stuff, but Fujimiya’s turn has been fun to see, and I’m looking forward to seeing the confrontation between him and Mahina.
Watched some more House with my friend. I’m not enjoying the gimmicky patients like the girl who could see ghosts or the guy who can magically read your insecurities and mirror them back at you. The CIA episode was pretty fun though.
I tried watching Catch Me If You Can, but I wasn’t really feeling it and stopped. This means I can finally continue my daily Movie Roulette though, so that should be fun for tomorrow.
Wednesday
The new Dirty Laundry episode was decently fun, it’s interesting to see guests who I’m actually pretty familiar with for once. The stories weren’t particularly exciting though.
Read the new Asper Kanojo chapter. Anyway,
Read the first few chapters of Shiroyama to Mito-san. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this oddball romance progresses.
Today’s Movie Roulette choice was Fantastic Mr. Fox, which my friend has been wanting me to watch for ages so we watched it together on Discord. It was pretty fun, though the stop motion animation and stares into the camera wigged me out a bit. I’m still not sure how I feel about Wes Anderson’s Wes Andersonisms, but the new Henry Sugar movie is on my list and I actually do love that book so we’ll see…
Thursday
I finally finished reading Sammy Keyes and the Curse of Moustache Mary, which I started weeks ago and haven’t had time to return to until now. Sammy Keyes is one of my favourite childhood book series – I love Sammy’s boldness and resourcefulness, I like that the books are written like kid-friendly noir mysteries, and I like the characters and all their developing dynamics. This instalment was a pretty fun romp, and I was surprised to see a kid’s book talk about meth? As a kid I only remembered the pig (I don’t think I got that far into this one, or reread it a whole bunch). I really didn’t appreciate the slurs though, intentional or otherwise.
I’ve had an on and off headache for like three days now, and I wanted something soothing to watch while I ate dinner so I put on Heya Camp, which was about 30 minutes total for 12 episodes. It was perfectly fine and cute, not much else to say about it. I’m looking forward to getting back into Yuru Camp proper though.
Today’s Movie Roulette choice is In & Of Itself, which I had put on my list because I heard that it was life changing. It didn’t really do that for me, but it was fine. I enjoyed the magic tricks. I think if I were one of those people in the physical audience who he would look in the eye and identify, it’d be emotionally moving, but other than that the platitudes of perspective and identity weren’t all that mind blowing to me. But with this, I’m officially down to 100 movies left on my to watch list!
And then, because I couldn’t help myself, I started the next Sammy Keyes book, which is the Hollywood Mummy. It’s the first Sammy and Lana centric story in the series and I remember nothing about it, so I’m pretty excited.
Friday
I watched some more House with my friend. This crop of episodes was pretty good, with the Christmas one being a highlight. I’m definitely enjoying the more lighthearted silly sideplots than the ones about House brooding about his pain or addiction.
Managed to read the latest chapter of Akuheki before passing out from sleepiness. Today was a very toxic yaoi kind of day, huh? I always enjoy the complexity of the main couple’s relationship in this BL, which is pretty rare to find. And oh my godddddd when Daimon was presented on stage as an object…this is the good stuff.
Saturday
And now to catch up on the BL series I’m following (which I was going to do on Friday night, but oh well). First up is A Second Goodbye to You, which I feel like only barely counts as a BL at this stage? But I’m enjoying the intrigue and the thriller aspects of the story, even if it feels a little like they’re just systematically placing the suspicion onto each person involved in turn. And after the third “Everything’s going to be okay! Oh no someone died!” twist it gets a little tiring. The reporter is an interesting new addition – I really hope he can just help Harusawa out because he’s definitely in over his head.
Next is the latest chapter of Memeshii Aku to Azatoi Suh, which I find to be generally pretty silly and I’ve only gotten this far because I enjoyed the original manga that this is a spin-off of. This chapter was like a lecture on slut-shaming and consensual sex lol. But good for them, now they can get together without reservations.
I watched the first episode of Spy x Family season 2 over dinner, and it was fun! Just more of the same, which is a good thing when the quality’s already pretty high. I enjoyed the experimental animation in the opening and ending, and I’m always down for a Loid/Yor shippy episode.
We’re nearing the end of House season 4 now with a solid batch of episodes. I realize now that I actually like this new team more than the original team – Thirteen is cool, Taub is cunty (this is a compliment) and Kutner is just chilling. Plus Foreman is still there, and he’s my favourite from the original trio. The episode where House diagnoses someone by watching a soap opera is a fun setup, though the ending felt pretty rushed and anticlimactic. My friend and I don’t like the Wilson/Amber pairing, but we do love that it brings out House’s jealousy and plenty of Hilson moments. We’ve left the two part season finale for tomorrow, which should be fun.
Went back and watched the second episode of SpyFam since it was available. And man they really tried their best to fill out the Bond centric segment huh…and it’s like, I like Bond as an addition to the family, but it’s hard for him to carry a storyline by himself. The Damian segment was a lot more fun – I like that shot of Damian with his little cape looking up at the sky. And I like that his friends are a little more fleshed out and that they’re his actual friends, not just henchmen. Pretty cute episode, if a bit slow.
Okay wow I’m only halfway through Undead Unluck episode 2 but I needed to write down my thoughts in case I forget anything. I love the stylistic choices and directing style here, it feels like they’re really taking advantage of the medium to elevate the story and the atmosphere rather than just adapting the manga panel for panel (cough SpyFam is sometimes a little guilty of this when it’s not doing big action set pieces cough). But the big blue sky framing and the stylistic cut into the title card and the UNAVOIDABLE cut was pretty perfect, and captured the impactful energy of the manga’s style. Hanae Natsuki as Shen is also sooooooo good, and I’ve always loved how interesting the Union felt like as villains – knowing what I know now, everything makes sense, but when I first read the manga it was really refreshing to have an antagonistic force that could be negotiated with and seemed to have its own altruistic goals, and also crazy to see people actually die and for those deaths to have consequences on the story…a shocking concept, in shounen battle manga. I really love Undead Unluck’s commitment to its own setting and exploring all its possibilities (well maybe not in the romance department. Which, while refreshing, is very straight lmao).
Also they haven’t announced who voices Mui yet, but I have my fingers crossed really really really really really hard that it’s someone who can speak Chinese…I get why Shen didn’t get that (I don’t even know of a male seiyuu who speaks Chinese) but I have two female Chinese seiyuu in mind who’d be great for Mui…Homoto Akina perhaps…and totally not just because I love her Love Live character…but pleaseeeee I’d love to hear some real Chinese in the anime. The opening was fun and stylish, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed by Queen Bee’s song for it. It was just more lowkey than I would’ve expected…it’s heartening to see so many characters show up in the opening, though. It seems like they’re in it for the long haul and I really do hope we get to see the entire manga adapted. The directing in this episode feels like they’re setting up how this will be a grand adventure, and I can’t wait to watch it play out. I just feel reassured that the people working on this anime really understand what makes Undead Unluck so magical, and their love can be felt through the work.
Wow I’ve never noticed that little opening on Shen’s waist…hip window… Also man I appreciate them animating Andy’s dick censor, it’s pretty funny how it flops around.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOO OKAY JUST GOT TO WHERE HANAE NATSUKI TRIES HIS BEST TO SPEAK CHINESE…I’M ROOTING FOR YOU MAN…
I completely forgot how Shen just sells out a member of the Union for seemingly his own amusement. It definitely sowed the seed for how interesting of a character he is…and why he’s my favourite heh. And wow that ending was beautiful…
I’ve written so much about Undead Unluck that it’s a little embarrassing ha, but I love this story so much and it’s amazing to see such a great adaptation of it. I love feeling like I’m about to set out on an amazing world-spanning journey…it almost feels like when I watched One Piece for the first time as a ten year old. I’ll definitely be tuning in every week.
And that’s it for my first Week in Review! (I’m forcibly ending it here so that I go to bed and not watch any more shows or read a book.) As you can see, I can talk a lot about things that don’t matter to anyone but myself because I think I’m soooo interesting (this is only half sarcastic). If anyone ever even sees this, I’ll be amazed. But until then, I’ll just be here talking to myself.

There is no gender or sex in the robots in “Stray”, that binary-ism of male/female doesn’t exist in that world. There is no point, not even being gender fluid. A robot just is, there is no use in assigning gender or sex to Momo, or Clementine, or even grandma. Grandma is not female, grandma is a term of endearment you give to an older robot. They don’t reproduce in the way their ancestors used to, so they don’t need the distinction between what is masculine and what is feminine. Everyone is masculine and feminine, also at the same time, no one is.

Cornelia could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times she had seen the old world in her, admittedly, still rather short life.
Visits to the birth continent of her parents were few and far in-between. They were all too content to remain in Seliana to pursue their academic studies, and had little connection to their families remained “home”. They weren’t exactly there on a visit, anyways, which made caring for her during the trip difficult, and they much preferred her remaining in Astera under the watchful eye of a trusted friend, or of her felyne “aunt”, Casserole.
But sometimes, very few sometimes, the stars would align, and Casserole would catch a nasty cold, or their friend would wind up so swamped with work they had no other choice but to take her.
Cornelia REVELED in those opportunities to explore a new locale with wide, positively sparkling eyes, even if it was under a dozen different conditions applied by her parents that she only listened to with one ear. The usual “don’t talk to strangers”, “don’t go out into the wilderness”, or “stay here, we’ll be back in two hours”.
All yadda-yadda-yadda-isms to the stubborn apprentice. She could handle the new world’s wilds, what was so much worse about the old world’s?! Though, she was reaaaaaally curious about that running theory that old world monsters were universally agressive due to human contact.
Honestly though, the worst that could have happened was...
_______________
Annnnd bored.
Cornelia watched dead-eyed as the hustle and bustle of Lulucion’s central plaza continued to stream to and from the Scrivener’s Headquarters, circulating around the ordered carts of the fifth comission parked by the stairways to the imposing building. The locale had apparently been chosen due to the occurence of a large number of fresh ecological reports coming to said Scriveners for a new summit on ecology. The New world comission had practically tripped over itself to attend.
She wasn’t sure WHAT it was about, her parents wouldn’t tell her no matter how curious she was in-between their long conferences, but it sounded... tedious.
Cornelia kicked her dangling legs from the back of one of said carts. She absent-mindedly lifted to her mouth the small, round pastry she’d bought off the nearest vendor, and took a nibble off of it, feeling her drained expression perk the slightest bit back up. After running around the plaza for a couple of days, exploring town on her own, she’d somewhat run out of things to do. So there she was, just... staring off at the crowd, hoping time would pass faster.
At least the food was pretty tasty. She could see a lot of people enjoying those “donut” things, if she looked a little harder. Including apparently...
Felynes with weird heads. Huh. Cornelia stopped mid chew, observing the new, interesting developpment before sliding off of her seat with a kick of her legs. Said felyne was following what looked like a younger person clad in downsized hunter’s gear. An apprentice hunter and their palico buddy? She felt her chest squeeze the tiniest bit at the pep in the following Felyne’s step. It made her miss her own little buddy. Momo had very much wanted to come with on the trip but, ultimately, wasn’t allowed by his family. Having someone to talk to would have made the whole thing so much more fun.
And, at least, she would’ve had someone to share the food with. But, agh! Cornelia shook her head, snorting out loud and practically shoving the donut in her mouth as she scuttled forward with renewed purpose. Nevermind boredom - if anything, she could try and see what the weird bunch was doing and where they were going! Perhaps it led to new people! Excitement! ACTUAL FUN!
Just not... sitting on her hands like an idiot.

i asked:
💋 (For Rin, of course!)
@sharkteethandduckfeathers answered:
When Rin came back to Japan, his trip coincided with Samezuka's first tournament of the year. And of course, he had to come see his former team. Rin sat up in the stands with his hat low over his eyes. He watched as Ai directed his team. (That sounded weird to Rin's ears when just a few months ago, it was his team.) Sousuke stood beside the smaller captain and Rin was glad that his best friend was helping out so much. Maybe he'd get his surgery and then compete again.
Rin's chest swelled at how well Ai gave instructions. He'd worked so hard and he was still swimming breast stroke, Rin noticed as he stepped up for his heat. Then, later on, he was surprised to see Ai also swim the butterfly. That was interesting. Rin sat up straighter when Ai took off at the signal.
Go, go. He mumbled and by the time Ai touched the wall, marking first place, Rin was on his feet, leaning over the railing and cheering him on. That got the attention of other members of the Samezuka team who still recognized Rin. That was how he got invited out to eat with Sousuke, Ai and Momo after the tournament.
"You did so well, Ai," Rin said, feeling pride in his chest. Sousuke was puffing up too and trying to hide it, but how could they not? They'd all watched Ai grow and now he had options. Maybe he'd compete on the world stage alongside Rin, Haru and more amazing competitors.
It felt so good to reconnect with old friends again and Rin was so proud of them all that when he felt a press to his cheek, it took him by surprise. Rin blinked, feeling his voice caught in his throat and heat already rising to the spot where Ai had kissed him.
He coughed, clearing his throat. It felt as though someone had shoved him. He was off balance and flustered, tugging the brim of his hat lower to hide the heat that rose up in his cheeks.
Ai had been stunned to see Rin came all the way to see his last tournament as a third year and as Samezuka’s captain at all, and if he had to name the bigger of two shocks - him winning or Rin being present, the obvious and quick answer would be the latter.
He’s glad, then, for the invitation for celebratory food after the fact; Ai had to put a stipulation that he’d be a bit late, having to reconvene with the team and debrief after Samezuka’s relatively strong show, but the sun hadn’t yet set by the time he arrived at the yakiniku spot, and so Ai considered luck on his side. He could drown out the perpetual sound of his heart beating straight between his ears long enough to survive the evening, he thinks, and write about it all in his journal later to decompress.
Except, that was the problem with one Matsuoka Rin: it was never as simple as save for later. Ai’s biggest problem with his former senior was constantly underestimating the effect and draw he had, constantly forcing Ai to confront exactly how ill-built the walls he had up were. All it took was one platitude or confident smile or other Rin-ism, and Ai started making mistakes.
Kissing Rin’s cheek? Nowhere near as calculated as it should have been, Ai relents. If Rin is flustered, Ai is mortified, staring agape at Rin and begging him from the recesses of his brain to say something, anything. But he doesn’t; he lowers his cap, clearing his throat, and Ai’s sole reprieve is that neither of their friends saw any of it.
In a desperate bid not to make things awkward - but also not regretting his choice, and knowing he has no better recourse than to stand by it - Ai issues a too-loud, too-boisterous laugh. “Ahh!! I’m not used to that kind of competition! I’m sure for someone like you, Rin-senpai, it’s easy.” Winning. He means he’s not used to winning. “But I don’t think I know how to cope.” Because yes, the choice to kiss Rin’s cheek was clearly solely the consequence of not regulating adrenaline properly. And nothing else. If his cheeks look about as red as Rin’s, no they don’t. “And, ah, well...”
In a stunning display of confidence, Ai faces Rin directly with a smile that could shatter entire worlds. “I’m glad you’re here. Really glad. That’s all.”

BNHA Halloween Day 3 - Lightning/Thunderstorm
@bnha-halloween2019 | Day [3]: [Lightning.Thunderstorm] / [Kaminari x Reader] | [Teen] | [N/A]
The soft rain outside was a pleasant view from inside the coffee shop. You always loved the aroma of coffee beans, freshly baked scones and tea, but the soft whiffs of rain that entered your nostrils every time the door opened tied it all together. You loved the rain. It was a calming force in your otherwise stressful life.
“Hey babe. Sorry I’m late.” You heard the voice of none other than your boyfriend as he spotted you at a small table, coffee in hand and textbook open. You made sure to take a deep breath in before the door closed.
“No worries,” you said, smiling happily. Kaminari took off his jacket and set it over the back of his chair. “So,” you said, watching as he sat himself down. “Quadratic functions.” You couldn’t help but laugh at the groan your boyfriend let out.
Like the rain outside and the smell of coffee, you loved your dunce of a boyfriend. It was taking Kaminari ages to ask you out, so you said screw it and asked him yourself. Everyone was surprised to hear that you, one of the smartest students in class 1-A, fell for the dumbest.
“You’re going out with who?” Momo asked. All the color had drained from her face when you told her. And all you could do was laugh. You would be lying if you said it didn’t get on your nerves, the way people overreact when they hear you two are together. There have been many times when boys in your class and in others who are smarter than him have told you to leave him for someone smarter. They always mean themselves.
“Come on, (L/n),” they would say. “Kaminari can’t even hold a pencil upright without messing up. Could a guy like that really take care of your needs?”
What needs? You’re in high school. Besides, seeing your man smile at you, the electricity coming off of that smile just as powerful as the electricity from his quirk, fills you with light. He cares about you, and that’s all you really care about.
“So if ‘y’ equals two x squared plus three x plus seven,” Kaminari said, taking you out of your thoughts. “Then the vertex is here?” He pointed at a spot on the grid and you nodded, excited that he was finally starting to understand precalculus.
He smiled one of those electric smiles at you and your heart skipped a beat. You love him. You love seeing him happy and you love watching him succeed.
But every relationship has a strain. The strain on your relationship with your dunce face boyfriend happens to be, well, your dunce face boyfriend. It’s not that he’s doing anything wrong, it’s just that his… Kaminari-isms kind of put a strain on you at times.
The light rain outside had quickly progressed into heavy storm. The lightning in the sky appeared periodically and thunder could be heard every five or so seconds.
“Perfect time for a storm,” you said as you gathered your belongings. It was seven o’clock and curfew was at eight. The sun outside had set for the most part, but it was hard to tell when the sky looked so gloomy.
“Here take my jacket,” Kaminari said. You took it with gratitude and began walking out into the storm. The train station was only a three minute walk away, so you weren’t too worried about catching a cold, but it was nice getting to wear his oversized jacket. It made you feel secure.
He slid his arm around you as the two of you walked out of the cafe, warm beverages in hand. However he quickly retorted his arm to hold up his backpack as an umbrella. The two of you ran into the darkness towards the train station. You both laughed at times when the other’s foot splashed in a puddle, making the other person wet.
The station wasn’t too far away, but Kaminari grabbed your arm and pulled you towards him, kissing you. The rain wasn’t letting up and there you stood, kissing in the rain like you were the main character in a cheesy romcom. When he released the kiss he smiled down at you. “What would happen if I activated my quirk during a thunderstorm?”
And there it was. That strain on your relationship. It was time to start the process of talking him down from his “genius idea.” Step one: laugh it off.
You laughed and poked him in the chest. “I think you’d electrocute yourself and you’d die.”
“Wait wait wait,” he said. “I don’t think I would.” Here it goes again. Your face faltered as he continued on with his stroke of genius. “If I’m struck by lightning while I activate my quirk wouldn’t it become stronger. I mean think about it. It would be just like in a comic book!”
“But this isn’t a comic book. This is real life.” You still tried to keep up that happy smile, but your voice shook. You love his stupid creative side, but more often than not it puts him in danger. You worry about that every day. And when he’s so persistent with his ideas you can’t help but cry because maybe, just maybe, that might be the last time you ever see him again. There was only one time when you admitted feeling like that to anyone.
“Why don’t you just leave him for someone who cares about you enough not to be a complete idiot?” Momo asked. “We could help you find someone better!”
“And smarter,” Jiro added.
But you didn’t want anyone else. You wanted Kaminari to care about his well being and the others around him at that.
“Are you crying?” he asked.
“Hmm?” You quickly wiped the tears away. You thought that maybe he wouldn’t notice since it was raining so hard.
“(Y/n) you know I’m only joking right?”
“Are you though?” You didn’t mean for your voice to break. You didn’t want it to break because you didn’t want to worry him, but here you were standing in a puddle, your shoes soaked, crying just about how much you care for him. “You do this all the time, Denki. I want to be there for you a-and I want to be with you, but I worry all the time about whether or not I’ll see you again the next day because you keep putting yourself in danger.” You look up from the puddle you’re standing in and look into his eyes. The sound of the thunder rumbled softly in the distance. “I love you. I love you so, so much. But I’m scared you’ll really mess up and might not come out of it alive.”
You hated the look on his face in that moment. He looked so full of regret. Regret for not listening when you told him that he was being an idiot, and regret for not noticing how much it hurt you sooner. He pulled you into a tight squeeze and you cried even harder.
He really does love me.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m so sorry I’ve been hurting you. I’m so sorry I didn’t see it sooner.” He tightened his grip to the point where you couldn’t breathe.
You choked out another sob and latched on tightly to him. “We should go,” you said. “We’ll miss the train.” But neither of you let go. You never wanted to let go ever again.
You didn’t separate until a loud crack of thunder caused you to yelp and jump back. There was a short moment where neither of you knew what to do, so you just laughed, but this time it wasn’t because it was the only thing you could do. He joined in, and soon enough you two were sitting on the pavement laughing your asses off in the middle of the storm.
By the time you got back to the dorms you were both shivering messes. Iida and Momo both scolded you for not taking better care of yourselves. You would both be sick by morning no doubt.
Everyone else saw it as the aftermath of another one of Kaminari’s stupid ideas. Everyone else gave you sympathetic glances as you were no doubt sick because of him. But the two of you knew that it didn’t matter because you had made it out of that storm stronger than ever before.

BNHA Rewatch: Episode 27 “Bizarre! Gran Torino Appears!”
mysterylover123
The Internship arc starts off with a bang! Let’s see that Full Cowl, Deku!
SORA NI UTAEBA! While the song in this intro is kinda meh to me, the visuals are amazing. I love the symbolism for all the events of the ep - tho not gonna lie, this core’s ED is better than the OP. Anyway tho, go punch that wall Deku!
We start with Gran Torino pretending to be crazy. I’ll admit, I’m kinda eh on this bit, though I love Gran. It’s probably because I found it annoying when Yoda did it, so I find it annoying here as well. (It’s really just my inner fangirl talking. Nobody makes Deku unhappy except Kacchan. Who can get away with it.)
But actually, this sets up an interesting difference between Deku and Luke, though admittedly situation isn’t the same because Deku knows Gran is Gran. But Deku’s response to this is to call All Might to tell him Gran’s gone senile. He’s so empathetic Deku why aren’t you real? (no shade at Luke there,e I love him too. Just not as much).
“I don’t have time to mess around.” Deku did not come to play.
New costume! It’s incredible how much better it is than the old one. Like, not even funny how much better. Day-um, Deku.
Pfh Gran knows exactly how to piss off Deku: Insult All Might. You clever little scoundrel.
So onto Deku’s character flaws: 1. He’s overly analytical. Deku doesn’t know how to act quickly, partially due to circumstance, but partially that’s just how he is. Hesitant. Over-cautious, over-thinks things. He needs to learn how to take action - and in this arc, he does indeed do so without hesitation, and saves Iida’s life by so-doing. Box 1 checked off.
2. Deku admires All Might too much. Like every MC in BNHA, his Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Tragedy (insert me telling you to read that essay again). It’s a problem because he doesn’t believe in himself. So he needs to learn not to imitate All Might and be his own hero. That one doesn’t really sink in until the PLE arc. But check.
3. Deku is insecure. He has a massive inferiority complex (which fits nicely into his foil’s inf-sup complex, wouldn’t-cha-know) and doesn’t believe in himself. So he needs to learn to be more confident. (Is it wrong that I want this to end with him breaking through Instrumentality to a chorus of his friends saying ‘Congratulations’?)
Gran is my favorite Teacher, as a teacher, in BNHA. I’m a teaching-major, and I kinda aspire to his techniques. What I love the most is helping students figure it out themselves. Just telling someone the answer doesn’t help them. It’s so satisfying seeing a student make that breakthrough thanks to your guidance.
Now we’re cutting away to Iida’s internship to remind you Iida Wants Revenge. This is a little exposition-y, let’s cut somewhere else.
OK good, the villains! Right off the bat, we’ve got some great Parallels with the Heroes, as Tomura decides to basically Intern with a Pro-Villain. He even calls Stain a pro. Tho Tomura really needs to work on his recruitment strategy. “Stain join us. Cause.” “Bakugou. Join us. Cause”.
I want Deku and Tomura to build a grand Hero-Villain rivalry. Tomura basically hates him for no real reason right now, and I want there to be a good reason. Other than “He’s All Might’s successor”. I want them to be the Joker and Batman of BNHA with a real complex hero-villain rivalry, where one reflects the other. They’re getting there but I want more.
“Bloodlust without conviction is meaningless.” Ooh I love me some Stain. He really elevated this series’ philosophical side with his ramblings on heroism and villainy.
OK am I creeped out by the fact that All for One just said the same thing I did about learning? A little.
Deku is so brilliant and such a fast learner tho. It doesn’t take him long to put it all together. And Gran actually really admires him for that - I enjoy their mentor dynamic a lot, since Gran has some real respect for Midoriya in a different way from All Might.
Bakugou with Best Jeanist! OMG the comedy gold of this. Though I just want to take a sec to gripe about a change from the manga to the anime: Manga! Bakugou does not charge at Best Jeanist and yell at him. He’s not dumb enough to try that on the #4 Pro Hero and his teacher. He sits still and listens to Jeanist’s lecture. The only Bakugo line here that’s from the manga is “Didn’t you make an offer for me?” This completely changes the way we perceive Bakugo in this scene, and in general. Bad change.
But in Good Storytelling-ville, I like the continuing parallels between the Wonder duo this creates: Izuku interns in a rundown neighborhood with an unlisted hero, Bakugo in Tokyo with a top pro. Izuku needs to learn to control his power and believe in himself. Katsuki needs to learn to be kinder and more humble. Izuku learns his lesson her, Katsuki doesn’t. Parallels!
Kirishima and Tetsutetsu again! 4th kind is ok. He’s probably the least memorable of the internship pros, since his gimmick is simple and his design kinda dull.
Uraraka and Gunhead! I love how well they get along. He’s kawaii and she’s a hardcore badass. Don’t you forget it!
Now for more of Momo’s arc. The Uwabami internship is usually dismissed by fans as Just Fanservice, but think about it in context, and it becomes really interesting. One, the Hero Killer arc is about Stain protesting the commercialization of heroism, so we do need to have a Pro-Hero demonstrate the problematic nature of that commercialism. Uwabami does just that. Two, we need to have Momo’s internship be unfulfilling to her, to complete her downward trajectory (before the Final Exam arc can bring her back up), so it’s useful for further embarrassing and developing her character. 3, it sets up Momo and Kendo’s future rivalry.
I’ll take more about it in future eps where it appears.
Izuku practicing and constantly hitting his face on the wall is one of those things that makes me wonder if either a) he has a secret endurance quirk or b) OFA just naturally ups your durability. How does he still have a face after that.
Here’s a hot take: Izuku with his face smashed up from spending a night with no sleep training in garbage all night is still prettier than any other guy in this series.
One of the reviewers I follow made the comparison between All Might vs Deku’s using of OFA and Korra vs Aang’s role as the Avatar. You know, All Might and Korra, both master the power pretty quickly so they get to be strong fast but lose out on the spiritual connection a bit, while Deku and Aang take their time learning ofa/the four elements, but get as a tradeoff more of the spirit-y side...(ATLA & BNHA. My 2 favorite shows, alongside FMA. I swear these are like, three sides of the same show).
While I’m watching in the Sub this time around, i wanted to note a dub-ism in this scene: it’s localized to ‘hot pastries’ instead of taiyaki. There’s a lot of bits like that, where they take Japanese food and translate it for us dumb Americans. But well, maybe that made sense in the 90s, when there maybe wasn’t as much cultural crossover, but...even I knew what mochi were before watching BNHA (Uraraka’s fave, and the dub always localizes it to ‘sweets’) and everyone has google if they’re confused so why not just say ‘Taiyaki?’ Ah well, it’s a stupid nitpick but still.
Gran’s metaphor here is so great. As a teacher I aspire to learn from this man. Teach me your teaching ways.
“THIS TAIYAKI IS ME!!!!!” Another dub-ism has him say “I’m not really a dessert” I saw a reactor once comment on this ‘Yeah, but you are a snacc, Deku.’ I wholeheartedly agree.
FULL COWLLLLLLL!!!!!!! FYEAH!!!!!
OK so there are a lot of reasons I love Full Cowl. it’s one of the series’ finest moments, emblematic of what makes it cool. And what makes Deku cool. He’s smart, and has to work his way around problems, and this solution was just...it was there, for us and Izuku the whole time, to finally sit up and take notice of. It’s about applying power in a different way. About taking what you can do and doing the best you can with what you’ve got. A big central theme for the series.
Also dayum that slow pan up Deku’s entire body as he activates it...he just looks good in this arc. Actually, post-cavalry battle Deku in the sports festival arc always looks weird and odd (because he’s beat up and in pain, duh) and prior to that he was mainly just adorable...this arc, however, is his official transition into Best Boy for Reals. He’s just...swoony. and also really cool, smart, and all sorts of great fangirl-y things.
We end on a confident Deku smile and Daiki’s adorable ‘hai.’ Basically, i really enjoy this episode. A little slow at the beginning, maybe. But that conclusion is amazing and so worth the payoff. It’s even got this amazing rhyme and rhythm to it, cutting back and forth between the different students and teachers and just having themes echo between each other like poetry. It love it.
To close off: ED4, AKA BEST ED EVER!!!! This is seriously, no sarcasm, best ED. So for those of you who don’t know, the story behind ED4 Datte Atashi no Hero is, 1: The Fantasy AU theme comes from the second popularity poll, which came out around Chapter 120/Episode 61 (yes, THAT one) and for which Horikoshi drew the top 10 in fantasy garb. 2: The Song was written by LiSa and was explicitly stated by her to be effectively about Izuku’s feelings towards Kacchan. I wrote a post analyzing it. It is, basically, the anthem for...
BKDK CORNER
“Loose…” Guess who the first person Deku thinks of to create Full Cowling is? If you sad Kacchan, ding-ding-ding!
On an analytical note, I think it’s very, very significant that the first real breakthrough Deku makes in handling his power comes by observing Kacchan and imitating him. This is one of my Top 20 Favorite BKDK moments, even though it’s completely indirect, because of how important that is in the long-run. But what about the Imitation theme? Why is it OK for Izuku to imitate Katsuki, but not All Might? Well, first of all, he does use Gran Torino’s moves as well, but mainly, I think the series is saying with this distinction that it’s OK to imitate someone if you see their flaws and acknowledge them, but if you hero-worship them and see them as perfect, you’re only going to screw yourself over. This is why Iida imitating Ingenium, Shoto imitating his mom, Deku and Kacchan imitating All Might, and yes, Uraraka imitating Deku, are all so bad for them. If you see someone as perfect, and want to imitate them, you’ll never achieve that in your mind, because you already view yourself as imperfect. So Deku can imitate Katsuki because he thinks he’s a jerk, but also an amazing fighter, and Gran because he thinks he’s weird, but tough.
Also Deku just automatically thinking of Kacchan first is so damn shippy.
BEST GIRL OF THE EPISODE: Uwabami!
RANKER: Ranking the Internship Pros, least helpful to most.
10. Uwabami
9. Mt. Lady
8. 4th Kind
7. Endeavor
6. Death Arms
5. Manual
4. Selkie and Sirius (anime only)
3. Gunhead
2. Best Jeanist
