It was a pretty normal day in the Sturniolo household, You and your husband were sound asleep in your shared master bedroom while your 5-year-old daughter Layla was sound asleep in her room. All was quiet, until your daughter made out a distress call for you and Chris.

"MOM DAD"

Layla screams out in pain.

"yes baby whats going on"

you asked worried as your rush into her room first with chris coming in minutes after.

"it hurts"

"what hurts babygirl"

chris asks as he kneels down next to you at the edge of Laylas bed where she rests her head

"m-my stomach"

she stutters out breathing in raggedly.

"does it feel like you are going to throw up or is it just hurting"

you ask her as chris thread his fingers through your guys daughter's hair.

"both"

Layla sobs out honestly.

"laylaa"

you coo out as you begin to rub her stomach to see if that would help ease her suffering a little.

You thought the rubbing on her stomach was helping seeing she at least stop sobbing in pain but it wasn't until Layla started letting out labored breaths and placed her tiny hand on top of yours, that you then looked to Chris with wide eyes knowing whats coming next.

"chris go get the trashcan"

you quickly tell your husband pointing to the trashcan with him proceeding to grab the pastel pink trash can in his daughter's room next the small vanity area, as you quickly sit her up at the edge of her bed.

"its okay babygirl"

you calmly whisper in you Layla's ear since you are sitting right next to her as Chris kneels down in front of her placing the trashcan under her chin. Layla proceeded to gag a couple time filling the silence that fell over the room, before she spilled the contents from her stomach into the trashcan, squeezing her eyes shut.

"oh my goodness layla"

you exclaim out turning your head away from the sight of your daughter as she continues to gag and continue spilling into the trashcan.

"atta girl, youre okay, get it all out"

chris says to Layla.

"you done"

chris asks as she nods her head as he removes the trashcan and setting it next to the nightstand.

"good girl"

you states rubbing you daughters back comfortingly.

"lets go get you some medicine and some soup to settle your tummy"

chris speaks up grabbing Layla gently by her waist as she reaches her arms out to him, picking her up as they make their way downstairs with you following. Chris proceeds to set layla on the couch across a few feet away from the kitchen where you and Chris walked in to after turning on a random cartoon to appease your daughters attention for the time being.

"babe where did we put the medicine"

chris ask curiously looking through all the cabinets in the kitchen as you start warming up the chicken noodle soup for layla to eat in hopes it will somewhat settle her stomach.

"umm check upstairs maybe you left it in our bathroom"

you reply to him as he makes his way quickly upstairs.

"here layla take a couple bites of this it might help your tummy okay"

you say to your daughter as you feed her a couple spoonfuls then setting the bowl on the couple table a few feet away.

"hows the tummy feel"

you question

"a little better"

she mumbles out.

"you want me to go get your pillow and blanket to lay on the couch"

you ask her as she nods her head in response as you disappear upstairs to grab her belongings she agreed to have on the couch with her. As you started to make your way downstairs, you pass you and chris shared room seeing his confused expression painted on his face.

"which one is it"

he asks simply dumbfounded

"it's this one-"

you trail off as you your daughter shout from downstairs, sharing a concerned look with chris.

"UH OH MOMM"

Layla exlcaims in between labored breath as you and chris made your way to the bottom of the steps gazing at your daughter hunched over figure, her supporting her weight on her tiny palms on the cushion of the couch's edge, as she lets out quick gag.

"no no no no no no"

you speak as you rush over to her pulling her hair back behind her shoulders as chris quickly runs to grab the kitchen trashcan to place it under his daughters chin, not quite making it in time. Layla spills out the contents of the couple spoonfuls of soup so ate onto to the floor in front of the couch.

"IM SO SORRY"

she sobs out, as chris finally places the trashcan under her chine careful not to step in the mess in front of him.

"its okay babygirl you're not feeling well you couldn't help it"

chris coos out as she lets out another gag spilling more of whatever was still in her stomach.

"oh goodness babygirl"

chris continues to coo out as you make you way to gather the cleaning supplies to clean the mess.

"i-i think I'm done dad"

Layla states pushing the trashcan away.

"okay pretty girl how about we go lay down try to sleep it off"

chris replies to his daughter as he moves the trashcan back to ground level on the floor, proceeding to pick her up carrying her to her room.

Time Skip

"is she finally asleep"

you ask chris as he walks back into your guys shared room after staying in Layla's room until she fell asleep which was proving to be difficult with the constant throwing up she has been doing all day.

"yeah i gave her some of that medicine so hopefully she sleeps it off"

chris sighs out sitting next to you on the bed pulling you into his cuddling grip.

"thats good hopefully she can eat something later to because she couldn't even finish the soup"

you huff out feeling bad for you daughter.

"she should be able to later hopefully"

Later that day, Layla did end up feeling a little bit better and did eventually begin to eat something and keep it down easing your nerves.

Chapter 9

Riri awoke to the sun shining on her face. She was still nestled against Shuri. Her head on her chest, and her arms tucked into her body. After their night watching the stars, they had come back to Shuri’s hotel room. Both of them had agreed it would be a nice change of scenery from the tiny dorm. Normally, Riri would be spending her Monday morning at her lab. She decided she deserved a break. The events from last night started to replay in her head. From the stolen glanced and quick kisses, to their amazing dinner and stargazing. Riri could say she had been swept off of her feet. Just as she was getting lost in her memory, Shuri started to move against her.

“No. Noo. Pleaseee.” Shuri chanted out.

Seeing her struggle, Riri began to coax Shuri from her nightmare.

“Baby. Baby wake up.”

“No. Momm. PLEASEE. NOO.”

Shuri continued to fight in her sleep. Now becoming more panicked as the seconds went on.

“Shuri. SHURI.” Riri called out shaking her more forcefully.

“No- I- wha-“ Shuri’s eyes shot open as she jolted up.

Riri stared into Shuri’s broken, tear filled eyes. As soon as she took Shuri into her arms, Shuri broke. Sobs filled the still morning air as Riri just held her and ribbed her back.

“I know you carry a lot. And I’m here for you. To help you carry that weight. We don’t have to talk about it. In time I know we will.”

Shuri continued to cry, this time softer. The couple just sat as Shuri regained control of her breathing. Moments passed but eventually Shuri sat up. She wouldn’t let her eyes meet Riri’s.

“I’m supposed to be strong. For my people. For my kingdom. But I’m so scared Ri. I just- I just don’t know how I’m going to do this. Alone. Withou- without them.” Shuri struggled out the last part. Riri sat attentively listening to her girlfriend.

“Everytime I close my eyes I see them. I see their faces. I’m reminded of how I failed. How I failed them and I just-. I want to escape it all, but even here they follow me. I know I can’t run forever.” Shuri finished, looking defeated.

“You’re not alone. And you won’t have to do this alone. I’m right by your side. Always. What you went through, what WE went through, that’s not something you can get over. You’ll be healing for a long time. It’s a journey, baby, not a race.”

Riri stopped and brought Shuri’s face to meet her own before she continued.

“And just know your family would be beyond proud of you. Your kingdom is proud of you and will support you. And Shuri, I’ll always be by your side. And when you do get ready to return. I’ll be right by your side. Okay?”

All Shuri could do is look at the other woman. In this moment she felt cared for, loved, and supported.

“Okay.” Shuri said giving a small nod.

“Now how about I make some breakfast and you get some rest okay?” Riri asked.

But shuri shook her head no.

“Hmm. No?”

“Can we just lie here a little longer?”

“Of course love.”

Riri continued to hold Shuri as the morning crept along. Both women basking in the comfort of the other. These four walls acted as their own realm away from reality. And while they knew they couldn’t escape forever, these few moments were enough to calm their fretful minds.

Eventually hunger began to interrupt.

*ggrrgggggrrr*

“Looks like someone’s hungry.” Riri looked down at Shuri from her position. The other woman’s stomach was signaling it was time for breakfast.

“Mmm, pancakes?” Shuri looked up at her with adoring eyes.

“And how could I say no to that face? Pancakes it is, love.” Riri started to release herself from Shuri’s hold.

“Mmm, don’t leave me hanging babygirl.”

Riri turned towards Shuri, only to be met with a kiss.

“Now can I go order some room service ?”

“Mm, I guess.”

Riri got up, giving Shuri one last flirtatious look over her shoulder.

Although her grief filled thoughts still loomed in the back of her mind, she felt lighter having Riri by her side. The last year of her life had been full of turmoil. But out of everything that happened, Riri was the light at the end of the tunnel. And right now she was also her rock. Shuri hadn’t connected with anyone or been as vulnerable with anyone as she had Riri. Especially in the last year. She was grateful for her girlfriend that’s for sure. ‘Hmm, girlfriend.’ Shuri thought still getting used to the new title. She had to admit romance was a completely different field than science and the technology she surrounded herself with on a daily basis. It was unpredictable and dangerous. Although recently these were things Shuri had become used to. Uncertainty and danger. Two feelings that still caused Shuri paranoia. Not only in her dreams but in her real life as well, but Riri had become her safe haven. Though she knew she couldn’t escape from her responsibilities forever in their safe little world. There was always a threat awaiting, known and unknown. Which prompted her next thoughts. Leaving. As much as she hated the idea, her time her was running short.

Shuri looked up at Riri, who was standing in the entry way to the bedroom. Riri was currently transfixed on ordering breakfast. Her phone attached to her ear while she paced back and firth. Missing her presence, Shuri got up from her spot on the bed and made her way into the living room. Coming up behind Riri, Shuri snaked her arms around the shorter woman. She stood there holding her, taking her in until Riri finally ended the phone call.

“Mm, I’m going to miss this.”

“And where do you think you’re going?” Riri teased, a smile dawning her face.

“You know as much as I want to stay here forever, hmm. I have to go back soon.”

Riri put down the phone in her hand and turned to her girlfriend. Her face now wearing a more serious, concerned look.

“I want you to stay but you know I understand. Just tell me when so I can prepare, okay?”

Shuri nodded, “I will. I plan to discuss my plans with Ayo and Aneka later today. I’m thinking about leaving the end of this week. Before I go, we still have plans to discuss about our project.”

“I know.” Riri said as a silence formed between them. “You know, I finish this semester soon and I was hoping to maybe visit? Not only would I get to see you but, we can work on the prototype some more. If you know, that’s okay?”

“What? Of course it is. I would ask you to come sooner but I know you have classes.” Shuri responded, half shocked Riri would even ask that question.

“I’d love to come and be your guest.”

“And I-“

*ring* *ring*

“Ah, speak of the bald headed devils.” Shuri picked up her phone to see Ayo’s name scrolling across the screen, releasing her hd on Riri.

“Yea. Hey, Ayo.”

‘I am here too, Shuri.” Aneka called from the background.

“Ah, yes, Hello Aneka.”

“How was last night? Nice I suppose as I haven’t heard from you. We would have come over but we were unsure of your— condition.”

Shuri’s face dropped in mortification. ‘They did not just imply’ Shuri coukd feel her face heating up at the thought.

“Well, uhm, we are just fine. And in no condition.”

“Perfect. Because we are at your door.”

Just then both women heard a knock at the door.

“That was fast.” Riri said referring to the room service.

“Sorry babe, but it’s just your two favorite warriors.” Shuri said as she opened the door, revealing Ayo and Aneka.

The warriors usual stoic mannerisms, were replaced a more cordial one. As they entered, Riri swire she saw what resembled a smirk on Ayo’s face.

‘How much did these warriors know?’ Riri thought.

Her question would soon be answered because before she could get out a word Aneka stepped forward.

“Just know you hurt Shuri, it’s an act of war. And we would do anything to protect our queen.”

“And if we have to, we will hunt you down to the ends of the -“ Ayo was cutoff

“Okay, I think she gets it. Enough.” Shuri looks over at Riri who is looking uneasy. Before Shuri could continue, Riri’s shakey voice broke the room.

“Just know I have no plans on hurting Shuri. And I’m very well aware on your capabilities to hunt me down. As if you haven’t done it before.” She said, mumbling the last part.

Aneka and Ayo looked the young woman over, still trying to seem intimidating.

“Well-“ Ayo started. “If Shuri is happy, that is all that matters. And if you want to know how we know, you two were as subtle as lighting.”

Aneka snickered, “Hm, yea. Almost as subtle as M20. And he’s a giant white rhinoceros.”

“I’m glad we humor you.” Shuri interjected.

“Now if you’re done, we would like to enjoy the rest of our morning.” Shuri said, going and wrapping herself back around Riri.

Nowadays she found herself needing her touch.

“Ah yes, yes. We just wanted to make sure you were okay.” Ayo responded, comfort and concern filling her voice.

“Hm, yes, I am. We are. Now let me walk you out.”

Shuri directed the two warriors towards the door. Before they could leave, Shuri stopped them.

“Hey, before you go, I’ve been thinking. I think it’s time to return to Wakanda. I was thinking the end of this week maybe.”

“Are you sure? If you need more time I’m sure the people will understand.” Aneka offered.

“No. It’s time. Plus-“ Shuri glanced quickly at Riri, “Plus, the longer I stay the harder it’s gonna be for me to leave.”

“Hm, that I understand.” Aneka said looking lovingly at Ayo.

“Well, we will make the preparations and discuss things further before the end of the week. Enjoy your morning, Shuri.” Ayo made the statement as her and Aneka started to head down the hallway to the elevator. Shuri watched the pair as they walked away while holding hands. She hope that would be her and Riri one day. Deep down she felt it would be. As the elevator doors opened for the couple, they were met with a hotel staffsman pushing a cart of food. Shuri looked in amazement and wondered what all Riri had ordered. Her eyes grew big and her stomach started to growl louder the closer the cart got. She stood back and held the door open for the worker.

“Good morning, you can just put that over here.” Shuri instructed the worker. “Here you go.” She said as she gave him a $20 tip.

The grateful staffer looked up with a huge smile and began to make his way back towards the way he came.

“Babygirl, you ready to eat?” Shuri halfway called out to Riri.

Suddenly Shuri heard feet peddling across the floor. Next thing she knew, Riri was jumping into her arms.

“What was that for?”

“Food always makes me this happy.”

“Hm, noted.” Shuri looked over her as if she was mentally putting a puzzle piece together of the woman before her. She had so much to learn and was no longer fearful of the unknown.

“Just know you make me happy.” Shuri said with a kiss.

Pulling away, Riri got done and began to make her way to the breakfast cart.

“So- we still have some things to go over for our prototype. And I would like to get some actual work done before you leave.” Riri said as she piled food on her plate.

“You know we could just forget about it and stay here.” Shuri tried to argue.

“Oh, no, you dragged me into this and best believe we’re going to finish it.”

“Well technically, you dragged yourself into it.”

Riri shot Shuri a glare that made the Wakandan instantly be quiet.

“Anyways, I was thinking of making a prototype based off the plans we went over. And then on Christmas break we could build a test model in the design labs.”

“Mm, I was already thinking of that. Don’t worry I’ll have a space set out for our research. This will stay between us until we say otherwise, yea?”

Riri just gave a nod as her mouth was stuffed with pancakes.

Shuri giggled at the sight before her.

“What’s funny.”

“Nothing, you just eat like a child.”

“Well, I take pancakes very seriously. Also, my stepdad used to cook them for me. My mom and I would dance around on Saturday mornings, singing loud and so so bad.”

“I know they would have been proud of you.”

“Yea. I hope so. You know I made Iron heart so I could protect people. I couldn’t protect them but…” Riri’s voice started to break, “But I can honor them.”

“You’re right we have to honor those we lost. And luckily, we get to do that together.” Shuri said as she looked up at her girlfriend.

The rest of breakfast was had in a comfortable silence. Both women opted on not cleaning up and returned to the bedroom. Knowing there time together would be ending soon, they took this time to enjoy one another. Riri would be returning to her classes tomorrow and finals were coming up. Although she wasn’t particularly worried, it was still a stressful time. Shuri on the other hand would be returning to Wakanda and all her responsibilities. The fate of her people now rested on her shoulders. She was scared even though she wouldn’t outright admit it. She felt as though she hadn’t been prepared, but she didn’t think anyone in her position had been.

While both of their minds ran rampant with anxiety fueled thoughts of the future, they remained each other’s peace.

i just went to a homeopathist (? homeopaat) bc she also went to see him and he did seem to listen to my issues well and not blame it on my weight or something 'psychosomatic' but i could not for the life of me keep up w his new age hippie kind of language in some parts at the end like. he clearly has vast medical knowledge and understood all the complaints i have and related conditions but when he talked ab energy and a division key he kinda lost me? ill try the meds he sends me tho bc these ppl helped me and my mom figure out our allergies and my mom's chronic illness before when the hospital refused to and gave us stuff that made our complaints worse.
