Describing Foods - A Masterlist
As a broke university student, I love reading about food. It’s almost like eating a real meal myself <3.
I get a little angry when characters are eating a meal and I barely get to experience it with them. In that, I mean I don’t just want to know what it is, but what it’s like to eat that food—how it tastes, smells, sounds, and feels. Is a perfect croissant still a perfect croissant without the crack of the exterior, the airiness of the pastry inside, the smell of yeast?
Probably not. When writing about a dish, the smell, texture, technique, taste, and how it looks are all important to painting the experience, so here’s some words to use when describing a meal:
Taste:
Acidic: Sharp tasting. Often used to describe tart or sour foods as well.
Aftertaste: A different taste that remains in the mouth after eating something
Bitter: Tart, sharp, and sometimes harsh flavour.
Bittersweet: Less harsh than bitterness. Tartness + sweetness.
Bland: Has no significant flavor or texture
Briny: Just means salty. Often describes pickled foods.
Citrusy: Bright flavour like… well citrus fruits—oranges, lemons, limes, etc.
Cooling: Mimics that cooling feel—like mint.
Earthy: Reminiscent of soil. Can be used to describe wines, root vegetables, and mushrooms.
Fiery: Another word for spicy.
Fresh: Light and crisp—describes produce or herbs.
Fruity: Sweet and reminiscent of fruit.
Full-bodied: Rich and ‘feels heavy’ in your mouth. Can describe wines or soups.
Herbal: Bright, fresh, sometimes earthy from the presence of herbs
Honeyed: Sweet or candied taste like honey.
Nutty: Taste similar to the flavors of nuts. Often used to describe certain cheeses.
Rich: Full, heavy flavour. Often dishes that contain cream taste rich.
Robust: Rich + Earthy. Used for lots of wines or aged liquor.
Savory: Describes meaty, earthy dishes and soups.
Sharp: Harsh, bitter, or tart taste. Used to describe acidic foods.
Smoky: Reminiscent of the smell of smoke.
Sour: Biting, tangy, tart flavor.
Spicy: Burning taste.
Sweet: Sugary.
Tangy: Tart, biting taste—feels tingly
Tart: Sharp, bitter, or sour flavour. Used to describe acidic foods.
Woody: Earthy, sometimes nutty taste. Describes some coffees or cheeses.
Yeasty: Earthy taste reminiscent of yeast. Describes beer and bread.
Zesty: Fresh, vivid, or invigorating flavour.
Sound/Texture:
Sound has a lot to do with texture, so I've combined them for this section!
Airy: Light, pillowy texture (think inside of croissant)
Brittle: Hard but easy to break
Bubbly: Usually during heating, when bubbles rise to the surface—low sound.
Buttery: Smooth, creamy texture (think certain pasta sauces)
Chewy: Food that needs to be chewed thoroughly. Can be light and bouncy (chewy bread) or heavy (steak) and sticky (candy)
Creamy: A smooth and rich texture, comes from dairy.
Crispy: Light texture with slight crunch.
Crumbly: Food with loose structure that falls apart into crumbs.
Crunchy: Firm, crisp texture with a sharp, loud noise.
Crusty (behave): Food with a hard outer layer and soft interior (many loaves and breads)
Delicate: Light and fine, feels like it can come apart easily.
Doughy: Soft and heavy, usually pale colouring.
Fizzy: Usually liquids—a hissing sound, feels like ‘static’
Flaky: Light, characterized by layers that come apart during eating.
Fluffy: light and airy.
Frothy/Foamy: Airy bubbles, usually in a drink like a latte.
Gamey: Usually refers to meats when they’re very “meaty”
Gooey: Viscous, sometimes sticky texture from moisture in a dense/solid food.
Hearty: Firm, robust texture.
Juicy: Tender and succulent texture from liquid in a solid food (steak)
Molten: Hot, gooey
Oily: Slick, heavy, lingers on the tongue.
Silky: Fine, smooth texture that feels sleek.
Smooth: Texture free of grit, lumps, or edges.
Snap: A quick, sharp, crackling sound when broken.
Squelch: A soft sucking sound when pressure is applied. Somewhat gross.
Sticky: Gluiness in the mouth.
Succulent: Tender and juicy
Tender: Soft and easy to break down
Velvety: Smooth and rich
Smell:
Acrid: Strong, bitter, unpleasant
Comforting: pleasant, probably calls back to a nice memory
Damp: Wet smelling—probably a bit earthy
Delicate: subtle, faint, not overpowering
Earthy: reminiscent of soil
Fetid: Caused by decay—unpleasant
Fishy: reminiscent of fish
Floral/flowery: Reminiscent of flowers
Fragrant: Sweet or pleasing
Fresh: Cool, crisp, refreshing—produce, probably not cooked
Funky: Something’s gone off
Heady: Strong smell, pungent, rich
Musty: Not fresh
Perfumed: Pleasant, reminiscent of something (can be perfumed with citrus, say)
Piquant: stinging, pungent—tickles the nose
Powerful: strong
Rancid: Definitely gone off, decomposing
Ripe: Strong, usually unpleasant smell
Savory: spicy, salty, no elements of sweetness
Sour: has gone off
Spicy: Sharp, tingles the nose
Tangy: Strong and bitter but in a good way
Tart: Sharp
Woody: earthy smell, reminiscent of wood
Sight:
Usually texture gives us a really good picture of what a food looks like, so here’s some non-texture sight additions:
Blistered: Bumpy exterior.
Caramelized: Usually golden brown
Cloudy: Splotched. Almost see through if not for a slight white or grey mist.
Colourful: Bright and vibrant
Glassy: Resembling glass
Glossy: Smooth, shiny
Marbled: Two colours intertwined
Opaque: Not transparent. Can’t see through.
Ripe: Colourful (can be to a fault). Nearing the end of its edible state.
Scaly: Covered in scales, fish.
Shiny: Appears wet or glossy
Sparkling: Glimmers under the light
Stuffed: An ingredient placed inside a larger part with no additional space.
Translucent: Allows light through
Vibrant: Striking, bright
Food Prep:
How the food is prepared gives it these other attributes. If your character is familiar with cooking (or is the cook themselves!) they may describe food this way.
Baked: Cooked in an oven. Results in browned or crispy outer layer.
Blackened: When food is dipped in butter and coated with spices then cooked in a hot pan—spices darken, making it appear ‘blackened’
Blanched: Food scalded in boiling water and moved to cold water so it stops cooking. Texture comes out soft.
Braised: Food that is briefly fried in fat and then stewed in a pot. Results in seared, crispy exterior with a tender interior.
Breaded: Coated with breadcrumbs/batter then baked or fried so it turns crispy
Broiled: Food cooked with intense radiant heat in an oven or on the grill. Results in a darkened appearance and crispy texture.
Caramelized: Food slow-cooked until it’s browned, nutty, and has a bit of sweetness.
Charred: Grilled, roasted, or broiled and gains a blackened exterior and smoky flavor.
Fermented: Food that’s sat with bacteria, yeast, or another microorganism and has produced acids, alcohols, or gases. Results in a biting, pungent flavor. (Kimchi is fermented)
Fried: Food cooked by submerging in hot oil. Creates crispy, crunchy texture and golden colour.
Glazed: Food with a coating brushed onto its surface. Appears glossy with a thin, flavorful, and crisp outer layer.
Infused: Food steeped in liquid with another ingredient so it carries the essence of that ingredient. Used with herbs usually.
Marinated: Usually meat soaked in liquid containing flavourful herbs, spices, vinegar, or oil.
Poached: Food cooked in near boiling water. Results in tender, moist texture.
Roasted: Food cooked with dry heat in an oven or over the fire. Results in browned exterior and crisp coating.
Sautéed: Food cooked quickly in small amount of fat.
Seared: Food cooked in small amount of fat until caramelized. Finished by roasting or grilling. Results in crisp exterior and tender interior.
Smoked: Food exposed to smoke from smoldering wood for a long time. Results in that distinctive smoky flavor.
Whipped: Food beaten to incorporate air. Light and fluffy.
What did I miss?

What would the Frowning Critters and Nightmare Critters look like in this AU?
I’mma kill two birds with one stone and answer both of your questions here.
The two other groups, Frowning Critters and Nightmare Critters, are the Sour Critters and Bitter Critters in this AU. The plan for them is that some of the Sour Critters will be relatives of the Sweetie Critters and as for the Bitter Critters, well you’ll have to wait and see.
As for their looks, how about I tell you what desserts we picked for each of them and I’ll even tell you what relation they have with a Sweetie Critter; if they have one. We’re still working on Names though.
Sour Critters:
CatFeine - A chocolate coffee cake with a pumpkin glaze and mocha finish
DogPressed - Blueberry Bread (She is the cousin of Dogdough)
Floppy FlopZee - TBD
Groddy Grudgebear - TBD
UniqueCorn - Pistachio Gelato with Strawberry Sorbet Mane. Dipped cone horn (They are the twin sibling of CraftyCream)
IckyPiggy - A savory apple thyme tart
Dumbba Dumbbaphant - Bubble Gum (Original Hubba Bubba Flavor) (She is the cousin of Bubba-Buttercream)
WimpinChikin - Passion Fruit Doughnut (She is the younger sister of Kickin)
Bitter Critters:
Baba Chops - Black Licorice
Icky Licky - TBD
Rabie Baby - TBD
Allister Gator - TBD
Simon Smoke - Molten Lava Cake
Poe - Goat Cheese Black Garlic Tart

Recently, I came across a YouTube short of "Wanderer meets Ruan Mei's creation", and since it's a short, I figured it would be silly.
It was so sweet, my heart was going to explode. Emotional about it still
Here's the short, in case you also want to experience Feelings.
I knew I loved Ashy Paste for a reason, besides that they're just so sad and I have an intense need to hug them. The abandonment issues, man.
Though, Ashy's situation is a bit different from Scara's. In the end, Ruan Mei shows that she does care about her creations, even if she still considers them a mistake, and she communicates with them and doesn't completely abandon them. Even though it's been shown that Ei did care about Scara and was misguided in abandoning him, she never made any effort to reconnect, and in fact, seems to be avoiding him, possibly due to her own ideas that he should be "free" of her.
Another major difference is in their reactions. Ashy will (unfortunately) always love and worship Ruan Mei, no matter what she does, and believe the fault lies with themself. It's possible Scara may have felt this way at first, we don't know, but along the way, and especially after his other "betrayals", it turned into resentment. Those feelings also make Ashy's situation all the more painful. The saddest, most painful thing in the world to me is someone who is abused or neglected, but continues loving and devoting themselves to the one that hurt them, believing they deserve it.
However, the "Molten Cheese Tart and Grey Bean Paste's Schedules" post shows that Ashy is somewhat overreacting. Ruan Mei does care about them--she makes meals for them, makes bedding for them, and compliments their singing (adorable!!!). It's a bit of a fault with the writing, since these things are never shown in the actual game. The only slight indication given that she might care about them is in her departure cutscene and the ending to Critter Pick. I've seen many people turn to hating Ruan Mei because of the things Ashy says...if the schedule text was included somewhere in the actual game, I'm sure they'd think differently. My own opinion of her improved a bit after reading it.
Even though they are cared for, I think Scara's advice in the video is really wonderful. Him caring for Ashy Paste and helping them learn to value their own life, not needing Ruan Mei's approval, is a beautiful thing for both of them. Almost like the sick boy in the past, Ashy is a kindred spirit to him. I...kind of want to write this as a fic, as you can see, I have a lot to say about it.

🍕 For your OC of choice!
Thank you so much for the ask, @zackprincebooks!!! I'll go with some of the cast of Supernova Initiative for this one!
🍕 - What is their favorite food?
Jack Tithus - He doesn't really have a Top 1 favorite food - as he grew up with the habit of simply eating what he could get, and being picky wasn't really an option. However, the closest thing he has to a favorite food, which is a dish he really likes, is the fish stick sandwiches mentioned in this post. His all-time favorite beverage is Hot Chocolate!!!!
Deimos Soll - His species needs a high-protein intake, so Deimos naturally gravitates to dishes that have some kind of meat. His favorite food is double hamburgers with blue asterberry bread, bacon, and cheese. He prefers to drink sodas, coffee, or energy drinks. He also has a strong distaste/disgust toward salads.
Vesper Foxx - She would like you to believe that she 'has no interest in such trivial things' but she does have a favorite food - pepperoni pizza followed by a molten chocolate cake.
Cassiopeia Tithus - She's a bit more of a picky eater than Jack, but shares a similar favorite food with him - she likes those fish stick sandwiches quite a lot. Another favorite food of hers is fried pocket tarts with string cheese filling. Her favorite drink is berry juice.
Aleks Keldora - Aleks adores his mothers' cooking. They are incredibly talented cooks and make mouth-wateringly tasty dishes, which are - in his opinion - as close to perfect as they can get. He especially likes their mixed-vegetable stew with wandering -quail roast. He also likes their cakes, especially the fruit ones.

Norfolk/VA Beach Trip 2023
My sister wanted to see the options at the Asian groceries and it’s been years since I’ve been to VA Beach so I decided to join her on a quick trip. Unfortunately, all the Asian groceries that we hit had very little selection and the seafood was pricey despite it being near the sea? Don’t understand how that’s a thing. At least one of the stores had fresh jellyfish which I bought.
Norfolk Attractions:
Norfolk Botanical Gardens: Admission was $16 and I wished we went in the summer. There were very little flowers in bloom in May. They had hydrangeas and wisterias (my favorites) but none were in bloom. Still fun and they had candyleaf which made Stevia. The leaves tasted like honeysuckle. The staff were very friendly and fun to talk to.
Chrysler Museum of Art- Free admissions and they have glass making demonstrations during certain days. Smaller than the VMFA and they do have some nice Tiffany-stained glass displayed. Great to walk around and parking is free. Staff is very nice and the atmosphere is quite relaxing.
VA Beach Food:
Ten Seconds Noodles: Had to get the cross bridge noodles since it’s a specialty of Kunming. The variety is great but I wish the broth was more meaty but it’s still good. I just prefer my beef noodles more. Price is also good with noodle priced at $13.
Prince Tea House: So I wanted high tea and the afternoon tea for two was $54, so very expensive for the amount of food offered. But high tea is always expensive and this option was the cheapest based on other places. We each got a pot of our preferred tea. The top layer was chocolate molten lava cake in a tiny COSTCO sample size cup, 2 macaroon, and 2 fruit tarts. Second layer had 2 scones with raspberry jam and cottage cream in separate containers. Last layer had 2 of every item—deviled eggs, cucumber sandwich, cheesy salami, cream cheese salmon, tuna sandwich. At least the variety is there and all the food taste delicious... it’s just miniscule. The décor is adorable and the whole experience is more for IG than to fill your stomach.
Place:
My sister got an AirBnB with a superhost. It was a mess since her estranged son showed up in the middle of the night and started to threaten her. It was getting to the point where I wondered if I needed to call the police since I had no idea if he had a weapon. I was getting ready to hit the car alarm on the keys but my sister got up to look at the situation and the guy left once he saw her. The host apologized and comped our stay but I think I might just do hotels if I travel next time.

Fictober22 (@fictober-event) Day 24 — "Is this safe?"
featuring Tabitha Ashley — a character from The New Ashton Chronicles, written & role-played by F.R. Southerland (@normallyxstranger | @frsoutherlandauthor | www.frsoutherland.com) © November 2022
original fiction
general warnings: n/a
It was quite a spread. The entire long table in the Kindheart Coven’s dining room was loaded with food—mostly baked goods like breads and muffins, but also scones and little tarts and cupcakes. Nearly every square inch of space was filled with some kind of delicious food item. Someone had certainly been busy cooking and baking all day. The scents wafted toward her and her mouth watered.
Were those—yes! They were! Cheese pastry puffs! They’d always been her favorite so Tabitha couldn’t resist snatching one immediately. It was still hot from the oven, so she tossed it back and forth between her palms to cool it some. She’d just bitten into the wonderful, flaky crust when Billy walked in, carrying another tray of them.
“Hey! Those have to cool!”
“No kidding,” she said—or tried to say. With molten cheese in her mouth, it sounded like “Mo iddi.” She chewed and then murmured a “sorry” which came out a little more clearly. “But it’s good. So good.”
“Of course it’s good,” Billy said, without a hint of humility, as he set the new tray among the others on the table. He had to carefully move another tray to make room. “I made it.”
Billy was just a few years younger than she was, but already he was a superior baker. Or cook, in general, now that she really considered it. More often than not, it was he who made a lot of their meals—and not just pre-packed just-add-water from-the-box kind of meals. Real food and really tasty food.
“Uh-huh.” Unfazed by his apparent ego, Tabitha simply agreed and grabbed another puff.
“Stop! You’ll eat them all before the meeting!”
“No, I won’t. You have a whole other tray!” And besides that, she wasn’t a total pig. She had self-control. “And it’s not like everyone’s gonna be here later. I’m sure we’ll have extra.”
“You don’t know that,” he huffed, oven-mitted hands going to his hips. “Mason might show up.”
Ah, yeah. He had a point there. Tabitha conceded that with a shrug and a half-smile. She had no doubts that their favorite half-demon could eat his share and then some with his voracious appetite, but still.
“Right, well, in that case—you should probably make more. Like, two trays more. Or three trays. So we have extra. For Mason.”
Billy saw through that in an instant and rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry—I’m making a whole tray just for us.”
“Oh, good. Wait—making, as in you haven’t started on it yet?” That was a bummer. “Why can’t our tray be this tray?” She picked up another puff and ignored her little brother’s annoyed eye roll.
“Because it can’t.” He smacked at her hand, but she deftly stepped back. “Stop eating them!”
She took her time with her pilfered puff, tearing it apart to see the ooey-gooey cheese inside it. As she chewed, she looked over the laden table. “Sorry,” she mumbled again. “I can’t help it. I’m hungry.” She paused, her brow furrowing slightly. “Hey, Bill?”
“Yeah?”
“Is this safe?”
That made his brow furrow. “What?” Worry immediately colored his cheeks pink. “Is something wrong with the puffs? Are they raw?” He started forward, pushing a brown curl off his forehead.
“No—I mean, they’re cooked. They’re really good. Really done. But the table.” Tabitha jutted her chin toward it. “All this food on one table. Can it hold the weight? It’s not gonna collapse under all those goodies?”
“I don’t—” But when he looked at her and caught her grin, he visibly relaxed. A joke. Tabitha couldn’t resist giving her brother a hard time either, apparently.
“Oh, shut up,” Billy said, rolling his eyes once again and turning back toward the kitchen. Tabitha snatched another pastry puff and followed after, her laughter ringing.
