240 - Private Life
We have another movie we adore to discuss this week! Writer/director Tamara Jenkins has long gaps between films, but has nevertheless delivered an all-killer-no-filler lineup, beginning in the late 1990s with Slums of Beverly Hills and returning a decade later with the Oscar-nominated The Savages. Her next film another decade later, Private Life, starred Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti as New York creatives going through every hurdle to have a baby, including considering their adrift niece (played by Kayli Carter) as a surrogate. The film was a part of Netflix’s awards slate, but didn’t receive nearly the push as some of the streamer’s other films in their awards slate, but we will always eagerly await the next Tamara Jenkins project.
This episode, we talk about Kathryn Hahn’s formidable career of praised (and sometimes undersign) television performances, and the culmination of appreciation for the actress around WandaVision. We also discuss Giamatti’s “shady record exec” period, Netflix’s emergence as an awards player, and Hahn’s appearance in the THR Actress Roundtable and swooning for Rachel Weisz.
Topics also include the AARP Movies for Grownups qualifications for Best Grownup Love Story, Applebee’s menus, and John Carroll Lynch joins our Six Timers Club.

Could you please recommend some books with that particular Friends to lovers trope?
I shall try! I haven't been able to find as many of these as I wish I could.
I actually was inspired to write that post because I just started listening to Sierra Simone's The Seduction of Molly O'Flaherty. This is a spinoff of her Ivy Leavold novellas, but I don't think you would need to read those first (they're quite good--though early on I kinda think I like this more...?). Molly is a scandalous woman a part of a scandalous group of libertines that tend to have sex with each other as friends a lot, actually. And she THOUGHT she was in love with Ivy Leavold's hero, Julian Markham. But in the beginning of Seduction, she's thinking back on this moment in the Ivy Leavold books when she was having sex with her friend Silas (they have sex... a good bit) and she looked down at him and realized "oh shit I'm in love with SILAS".
Anyway, TW, the book does begin with Molly as a wreck shortly after an off-page sexual assault, and she does NOT tell Silas about this before having sex with him again for comfort, and it's INCREDIBLY hot and I did actually feel like I was reading about two people who know each other super well and have had sex a lot, which is a great and hard thing to write--but yeah, halfway through it goes from really dirty shit to him MAKING LOOOVE to her. And then the novella cuts to Silas leaving because somehow he fucked up and we don't know how and now he's BACK IN TOWN. I'm GRIPPED.
(I feel it's SO important that I mention that he takes control of the moment by saying "let me have it". Which. Works.)
You, Again by Kate Goldbeck is definitely this. It's a 21st century take on When Harry Met Sally wherein the hero and heroine meet because they're hooking up with the same girl, dislike each other, then meet again after she's divorced and depressed and become best friends. You can tell that heeee is more aware of his feelings, but she's in total denial until he absolutely fuckin' rails her. And then she's like "FUCK" because it was supposed to be a one-off and now it's nooooot.
Reckless by Stella Rhys. The hero is the heroine's boss, but they've become best friends and have this totally codependent relationship lol. And they don't see each other in a Sexual light at all until they have this very CHARGED moment talking about sex stuff on a work trip when she's emotional because she just found out her fiance was cheating on her. Then he's like "well if you like.... need it......." which leads to a FWB thing (that starts in his office) and I can remember this particular scene where it's like "well SHIT" because what is gonna happen to their lovely fuckbuddies thing???
Friends Don't Fall in Love by Erin Hahn is a contemporary wherein the hero is actually a professional associate/friend of the heroine's fiance. She and her fiance are both country music up and comers, but when she sings a song protesting gun violence the country music community cancels her and her fiance dumps her, and she just happens to get drunk with the friend, who's closer to her, and then they have sex and it's definitely one of those things wherein Feelings Were Realized but she can't handle it so they go radio silence for a few years until she needs a place to stay and he becomes her landlord as she begins trying to restart her career. But... IT AIN'T OVER.
Give Me More by Sara Cate is a MMF take on this. Hunter and Drake have been best friends since childhood, and then Drake became friends with Isabel when she married Hunter. The three go on a roadtrip, during which Hunter notices Vibes between Isabel and Drake and basically asks them to fuck while he watches. However... Hunter gets increasingly Involved in these scenes, because maybe it's not that he likes to watch maybe it's that he's just, idk, bisexual, and there are SEVERAL moments where it's like.... oh. That's what that feeling is.
Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian has the hero become friends with the new guy in town, except the new guy is actually a girl, except no that's not it the new girl is nonbinary and is disguised as a man for plot reasons, which really sends our poor hero into a tailspin of confusion because like... he was attracted to them... But once they have sex it's definitely an "oh fuck this is a lot more than attraction" thing, and the other lead, Robin, has this realization especially sharply when Alistair is fucking them against like, a door. It's GREAT.
#romance novel blogging#romance novels#book recs#there are more but i feel like these are real 'the fucking opens our minds to love' books

👻 Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Molly and her brother Michael don’t always get along with their stepsister Heather, but when they have to move to the country and find a graveyard behind their house, tensions rise. Especially when Heather finds a new friend among the graves.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting with this book, which was great, and it was so fun to read. Even though the book is only 184 pages I was addicted and couldn’t put it down. The story is chilling and I really liked the growth and forgiveness the characters go through. I’m also psyched that apparently there’s a graphic novel version, too? Awesome!
(P.S. Watership Down is mentioned a few times and I was screaming)

Ruby Gillman: The Call of the Leviathan (Sequel Fanfic Idea)
Summary: After getting precognitive nightmares about the Leviathan, a giant mighty mythical sea snake feared by all, Ruby Gillman soon learns that she has made the grave mistake of indirectly releasing the beast from its ancient magical bonds. The task to undo this mistake is not an easy one by a long shot, and the key to it working is an alliance so shocking and unorthodox that it may just be insane enough to work. If this mission does not go according to plan, it may lead to the destruction of everything Ruby holds dear in her life. No pressure, right?

Little Book Review: YA/Children's Literature Round-Up (May-December 2022)
Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary (1983): Leigh Botts keeps up a years-long correspondence with children's author Mr. Henshaw, which becomes an important outlet after his parents divorce and he has to move to a new town with his mother. This is the book that won Beverly Cleary the Newberry Award, and frankly it's like when Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor for The Revenant instead of The Wolf of Wall Street. Cleary was a legend, but she excelled most at lower-stakes childhood (and sometimes adolescent) drama, like being bad at cursive, not owning enough cashmere sweaters, or (at worst) worrying because your father lost his job. This is still a sweet, sensitive problem novel, yet I feel like Judy Blume or Betsy Byars would've pushed it to the next level.
The Snow Angel by Suzanne Weyn (1996): In the eighth volume of a middle-grade series about four girls who are friends with angels, rich girl Molly is devastated when her boyfriend dumps her for hippie-dippy Christina. She distances herself from her loved ones, almost relapses in her recovery from anorexia, and ignores the gigantic snow-angel-turned-tourist-trap on her other friend Ashley's horse farm. Luckily, her dad just brought a catatonic Irish boy into their house! Can Molly help herself by helping him? I bought this book for a dime because it looked completely ridiculous, and it delivered on that front. I really didn't like any of the girls except for Molly, and with her it was mostly just the sympathy I'd have for any troubled teenager.
The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney (1881): In a small New England town, widowed Mrs. Pepper and her five kids (Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie) must work hard to keep their spirits up in the face of grinding poverty, measles, and monkey-related shenanigans. I made several gos at reading this book as a child, but always lost steam after the Peppers made friends with the wealthy King family. Little Emily was right on the money, because this classic is just not very good, especially after the rich folks start helping out. It's beyond treacly and only a few of the episodic chapters have a good amount of tension. Polly's almost-going-blind-from-measles-and-eldest-daughter-syndrome arc is still great, though.
Afternoon of the Elves by Janet Taylor Lisle (1989): Sheltered fourth-grader Hillary forms an unlikely friendship with her neighbor, outcast sixth-grader Sara-Kate, after the older girl claims to have elves in her backyard. I had to read this book for school in fourth grade and I did not like it. I felt like it was trying to lure me in with something fun (magic, miniatures), only to never deliver and hit me with the actual sad topic (poverty and mental illness of a parent) instead. I stand by my elementary-school opinion. The good version of this novel is Daphne's Book by Mary Downing Hahn (if you want to read about an average girl befriending the class outcast before losing her to Social Services) or Lucie Babbidge's House by Sylvia Cassedy (if you want to read about a troubled girl getting lost in the arguably magical miniatures sauce).
Ten Cents a Dance by Christine Fletcher (2008): Working at a meatpacking plant to support her arthritic widowed mother and little sister in early-1940s Chicago, pretty, scrappy teenager Ruby Jelinski takes a chance and becomes a dime-a-dance girl at the recommendation of a handsome neighborhood hoodlum. I read this book at some point in high school and vaguely remembered liking it, but this time I was blown away. Fletcher packs a mind-bogging amount of character development and historical detail into a fast-paced story that ventures into some unexpected territory. It's maybe one of the best historical novels I've ever read.
Mitch and Amy by Beverly Cleary (1967): Nine-year-old twins Mitch and Amy don't always get along, but, if an outsider messes with one of them, he better be prepared for double trouble. Class bully Alan Hibbler learns this to his sorrow. This is the kind of cute slice-of-life story that was right in Cleary's wheelhouse, although it's not her most memorable. There are lots of sweet moments between the twins; for example, Amy gets Mitch an exciting book from the library when he's sick because she senses it'll help him with his reading struggles, and Mitch goes to bat for her when the dreaded Alan spits in her hair. I do think it would've been ideal if Mitch had also done something to help Amy with multiplication, for the symmetry. Also, I can't believe I missed the beginning-of-the-late-1960s California setting. These are some Joan Didion babies.
Cleopatra: Daughter of the Nile by Kristiana Gregory (1999): Her older sister wants to kill her, her father is a severe alcoholic, and she's stuck living in Rome with a bunch of gross old men who don't take her seriously, but teenage Cleopatra doesn't let that keep her from learning and adapting. This is one of the Royal Diaries I didn't read as a kid, and I really enjoyed the characterization of Cleopatra, who's resilient, clever, curious, and conflicted about her thorny family relationships.
(The Snow Angel, The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, and Cleopatra: Daughter of the Nile were all first-time reads; the rest were rereads.)

I agree with this 100% but I also have this hanging in my office which an amazing boss gave to me...
I look a lot like the cartoon lady and the truth is...and it took me a long time to accept this...but like it or not being me means bringing a little sparkle with my strength.

one of my booktubers has been reading books from every year since she was born so i decided to look up what i might read if i did that and 1986 was kind of stacked?? (because of the cocaine, i assume)
to say a stephen king novel was published in a given year is like, name any year since 1974 apart from 2020. most years he was publishing more than one. so it’s not that impressive, and this year he “only” published one, but it was it, which has surely got to be top five most iconic
not much different for diana wynne jones whom i miss every day but this was the year that gave us howl’s moving castle, which thanks to miyazaki is definitively her best-known and most popular work.
the first volume of watchmen was published this year
as was all of frank miller’s the dark knight returns
the first baby-sitters club books
AND the first sweet valley twins books
AND the first american girl books, with three each for samantha, molly, and my favorite kirsten
AND the first magic school bus book which unlike the others was not a series i read but still, the launching of another iconic childhood book series
the first volume of maus (published only chapter by chapter in a magazine to that point)
the first redwall
the third book of tammy pierce’s first series song of the lioness
the second ever discworld
(second books/volumes both for ender’s game and dragon ball but those feel less impressive—i guess the anime for the latter also started this year?)
the hellbound heart (aka hellraiser)
burning chrome by william gibson (the collection)
more inspirations for films: forrest gump (yeah that was a book, no you shouldn’t read it), and fincher’s zodiac
probably of interest mainly to me but wait till helen comes by mary downing hahn, this is probably her best-known work
and of course tons of 80s staples who like king were putting out one or more books every year at the time but none of them particularly stuck out to me as being noteworthy, but they were there
#i’m sure you could put together a list like this for virtually any year#but they probably wouldn’t have the first book of FOUR iconic children’s series in them#anyway a fun exercise#deep thoughts
