The Longer Now

A recent visit to the family farm had me staying in a different room than usual. Perusal of a shelf had me pulling out an early book I created for my parents nearly twenty years prior. The cardboard and paper wad, still managing to hold together, was wedged between yearbooks, WWII volumes and farm things. 

Aside from hissing death storage on Zip Discs of old, my experimental vanity project of self-portraits (and Christmas gifting), The Longer Now, only exists in this single, self-published, screwed together copy. It was cobbled together over the course of a quiet week while on winter break from design school.

I must note I included in the book the lyrics to the Mojave 3 song, Pictures:

Ricominciare dalla musica mi sembra la strada più naturale. Vuol dire ripartire dall'essenziale proverbialmente “invisibile agli occhi”. Presente alle orecchie. Connesso al battito. I Mojave 3 che assomigliano a un Nick Drake americano (eppure sono inglesi), seduto davanti alle onde dell'oceano con al fianco, piantata nella sabbia, una vecchia tavola da surf, verso l'ora del tramonto, sono la colonna sonora perfetta per riprovare a correre. Per uscire fuori in una mattina luminosa come questa e spurgare, prima di entrare a lavoro, cose disordinatamente accumulate negli ultimi mesi. La presa di coscienza di tristi cambiamenti epocali all’intero di questioni che davi per scontate. Un errore da pulcini. Siamo tutti dei Moai goffi e tristi, naufragati in mezzo all’oceano, piantati nella terra spoglia di Rapa Nui, con un’espressione ebete a non fare un cazzo per tutta la vita, come vittime di una maledizione autoinflitta. La scrittura come la corsa, ha bisogno di ritrovare il suo ritmo, sono due tipi di allenamento, due pratiche che si somigliano ,in maniera per certi versi confortante. Murakami lo sa bene. Sa tutto, maledetto lui. Io so poco. Conosco queste mani, ho solo queste mani, che scrivono da sempre, che ne hanno sempre avuto bisogno, riuscendoci purtroppo a fasi alterne. Senza troppa convinzione. In modo discontinuo. Come se fosse qualcosa di accessorio e non il senso del tutto. Come se fosse qualcosa di cui si può tranquillamente fare a meno. Conosco ormai queste gambe, che oggi fanno un male bastardo e questa schiena che ho smesso di ascoltare, altrimenti sarei ancora fermo e incazzato. Altrimenti sarebbe come darla vita al tempo. Ai giorni in cui c’è solo lavoro e poi ancora lavoro e la sera finisco per crollare sul divano davanti a un veterinario del Michigan che passa metà delle sue giornate con il braccio nel sedere di qualche mucca. Non so altro della vita. E sono stufo di darla vinta alle cose, alle persone, come se il tempo che ho a disposizione fosse in comodato d’uso, proprietà di altri, ricordando sempre, di dire “grazie”. Sorridere e ringraziare. Come da bambino, per far vedere quanto sei ben educato. Quanto sei addomesticato. Grazie a tutti, scusate per il disagio. Grazie a ‘sto cazzo.

Welcome back Slowdive! ◼️🔲◻️⬜️ After 22 years, the English shoegaze band Slowdive has released a new song and video, STAR ROVER. This is very exciting news and I have high hopes for their new album, coming out sometime this year. To catch yourself up, check out their masterpiece albums Just For A Day (1991) and Souvlaki (1993). Also, Neil Halstead's solo work is completely worth checking out, (especially Mojave 3). Really good stuff if your into the bleak, minimalist side of folk. ◻️◻️◻️ I'm going to make it a Slowdive day today, listening to all three of their albums, Mojave 3 stuff and a bunch of Neil's solo work.
