So my family actually has hereditary hearing loss, and I have quite a few relatives who are deaf/HOH. I actually have auditory processing disorder, outer hair cell damage, and some scar tissue in one of my ears. I just wanted to bring this up because I’m probably going to be extremely biased when writing these headcanons. I have my own experiences and the experiences that my deaf/HOH family have shared with me, so I don’t think I could write anything without some of those experiences influencing what I write. I just wanted to mention that real quick so if I say anything too specific or broad that might not apply for everyone, I don’t want it to come off as ignorant or disingenuous.

Side note: I studied speech language pathology and audiology for my post bachalors and undergrad. Right now im going through the licensure process, so I LOVE these types of asks SO freaking much! They make my freaking day!

I will try to make these headcanons broad, but I have written some side notes in case something I wrote is based off of a skill or technique that my friends/family use when speaking to me

Anyways:

-First off, Jonathan always tries to face your direction so you can understand him better or look at any gestural cues like his facial expression or hand gestures. Not that he’s exceptionally expressive normally, but he figures it might help

-If you use sign language he will make an effort to learn. If you use an AAC device he will try to learn how you use your AAC device and program additional frequently used phrases if you are ok with him doing so

-I feel like since Jonathan has a background in psychology he would have at least a basic understanding of social norms in a friend group with deaf/HOH members. I think he would completely understand that once he turns away or if you turn away from him that the conversation is over (maybe I’m projecting a bit too much with this specific headcanon because everyone I interact with knows that if they turn away from me while talking to me that the conversation is now over). I think Jonathan would also make an effort to have any serious conversations in a well lit room like the kitchen

-If you use a hearing aid, amplifiers, or any type of assistive/augmentative listening device he will most likely start carrying around extra batteries or a charger. And if you use an ALD with a receiver, he will wear it around his neck so it’s easier to understand his speech (only if it’s the type of ALD that uses a receiver)

-If he’s trying to get your attention, and you are comfortable with it, he will try tapping you on the shoulder or find an alternative if you aren’t comfortable with being tapped

-Jonathan will exaggerate the pronunciation of his speech if you have any trouble with sound discrimination and ONLY if you are ok with him doing so (again, I’m a bit biased because this is what my family and friends do for me since I have some trouble with sound discrimination)

-If you are in aural rehab, he will practice techniques with you if you want him to

-Jonathan probably uses more expressive gestural cues around you, deliberately, so it’s easier to interperate how he’s feeling

This is all I could think of at the moment. If anything I wrote was too specific or too broad I’m sorry. I’m mostly writing this from what I know from my family’s experiences, my own experiences, and what I know from school. If you’d like any scenarios that are more specific I wouldn’t mind answering another ask

So because I'm pretentious and annoying, here are my head canons on how Jonathan Crane looks based off of various DC media I have consumed and my own personal thoughts. HEAVILY BASED ON MASTER OF FEAR JON APPEARANCE

DISCLAIMER: These are opinions and are not hard pressed fact. Although Jonathan Crane might have a look that seems common from on comic/show to another, nothing is set in stone and new versions and appearances for characters are always coming out! This is just my personal idea of how he would look and nothing more!

Okay, real quick, I'm imagining him to be in his late teens/early 20s

Starting off, bitch is fucking TALL, like, rough estimate, I would say he is abt 6'5 maybe

This is going off the idea that Batman is 6'2 fyi

Of course, this kid is gangly

I'm talking stick limbs, no meat on his bones

I would think that since he is a hardcore bibliophile, he doesn't do much for athletics outside of self defense or something

Again, lives at the library, so eating is likely not his primary focus, very much a 'eat to live' rather than 'live to eat' type

His face is probably long and thin if that makes sense, giving him an aged look

His eyes are a dull blue color, framed by his eyebags from late night experiments reading, all hidden behind thick, brown circular glasses

His lips are thin, and usually pressed into a near permanent frown, etched into his face from years of torment from his peers

His hair is copper colored, and fairly thin and a little brittle

Again, man lives for books, I imagine he isn't that concerned with what brand shampoo he uses

Looking at him head to toe, with his height and thin limbs, it almost looks like he has Marfan syndrome, as his arms and legs appear longer than they look

His hands are actually somewhat big, but like the rest of him, they are more long than wide, his fingers bony and nails clipped short

Quite honestly, I could see him being a good piano player

Although he was hunched over during most of his youth in an attempt to appear smaller and escape his bullies, he now walks with his head high because he got away with revenge on sherry

Overall, a very tall and thin young man whose experiences have aged him

I get very bad stomach cramps during mine, and they can be quiet debilitating. Where all I can do is cry and vomit while curled up in a little ball. Because that's just how much it hurts.

BTAS Jervis with him, if you're in pain, he's in pain. And he definitely doesn't like having you in pain at all. Literally at your beck and call--need something? He has it ready for you before you even ask it. This man loves nothing more than to serve and please you. He will check on you regularly but not to the point of annoyance. Jervis doesn't mind what state you're in, he'll always love you and be willing to help with all your period needs.

Masters of Fear Scarecrow has a mental checklist when its your time of the month. Medicine? Pads/Tampons? Pain Levels? Snacks? Weighted blanket? Heating pad--he remembers things even you might forget about. Somehow he seems more prepared than you are, which definitely helps. Jonathan hates to see you in pain, he does everything he can to make you as comfortable as possible until the dreadful month is over.

Here are some head cannons to get you through the day:

This man is very rigid in his way of helping others. If they are in emotional pain, he will be as accommodating as he can, and he will listen to you. But if you’re physically sick, he’s most likely just going to take care of your physical well-being. His bedside manner leaves much to be desired, but he still tries to help you out as much as he can.

He will drop everything just to be with you, he will rearrange his entire schedule to fit around being near his sick partner. 

He won’t let you eat or drink anything with caffeine if your vocal folds are dry. He wants you to get better so he’s the type of person to store all of the sodas and coffee in the house in a safe. He’s the only one with the combination.

You are confined to your bed or on the living room couch. He doesn’t want you moving around or doing anything physically taxing. He will bring you any items you need. If he sees you getting up before he thinks that you were getting better, he will pick you up and put you back.

He ends up giving you a bell to ring whenever you need him 

He’s the one cooking. Final decision. No compromise.

He will check your temperature every hour, make sure that you’re taking the medication you need, and is just watching over you

He will buy a bunch of disposable items for you to use so that you don’t contaminate the rest of the house

He still makes sure that you’re entertained and happy, he brings you whatever you need. If this man is still teaching, and he is in an online lecture, and he hears you cough, he will put the call on hold just so he can check on you

When Jonathan is sick:

He will avoid admitting that he is sick for the longest time

He absolutely despises being sick due to not being as productive, so, if you offer to help him at all, he’s most likely going to decline

He will go to the doctor if you ask him to, but he’s probably more happy to pretend he’s not sick at all

Jonathan is still taking over-the-counter medication, but claims that it’s for something else. Everyone knows he’s sick and that he is just in denial 

Eventually, you might be able to get Jonathan to relax enough to take off work if he’s still a professor. It will take a lot of time though.

If he has a cold, he will be in denial for a full week before he admits that he’s sick

He knows he’s sick, he just doesn’t like having his schedule disrupted
