7 Midcentury Modern Homes in Places You Might Not Expect
realtor.com
California (specifically Palm Springs!) is a hotbed of desirable midcentury modern homes. The classic, clean-lined residences from the 1950s and ’60s also tend to pop their stylish heads up throughout the deserts of Arizona and the tropics of Florida.
The open layouts, natural light, and sliding glass doors appeal to seasoned entertainers, as well as fans of vintage design and culture.
But buyers in search of midcentury style needn’t fret if they’re not on the coasts. We dug into our listings and found seven MCM homes in small towns in North Carolina and the state of New York—and even metro areas like Oklahoma City.
If you can spot these rare beauties, midcentury residences in regions off the beaten path can represent a major score. Prices are likely to be cheaper than they would be in California, and the competition may not be quite as fierce.
Even better? Spotting a home that hasn’t changed hands often and still retains much of its original charm. Here are seven midcentury classics in places you may not have thought to look …
10322 Lloyd Rd, Potomac, MD
Price: $850,000
Spiffed up with twin turquoise doors, this brick two-level beauty features four bedrooms and three baths. It was built in 1962 and designed by Charles Goodman, celebrated for his modern home designs in the Washington, DC, area.
Lovers of nature will appreciate that the home backs up to Watts Branch Park and sits on over an acre. But what really makes this place special are period-friendly renovations (and preservations): Kerf Design cabinets, a Modwalls glass-tile backsplash, two exposed red-brick fireplaces, drum pendant lighting, and aquamarine accents in all the bathrooms.
10322 Lloyd Road, Potomac, MD
realtor.com
———
6115 Adirondack Trl, Amarillo, TX
Price: $385,000
Although this property was built in 1961, modern upgrades show that its owners knew enough to preserve the history of this four-bedroom, 3.5-bath ranch. Elements that have stood the test of time include a long vertical silver handle on the wide front door, marble countertops, and a refinished basement. Walnut paneling, piano windows in the bedrooms, and a wide fireplace were all thoughtfully maintained as well. A covered patio (with one open wall) off the back of the house is the perfect entertaining pad, complete with free-standing cone fireplace.
6115 Adirondack Trail, Amarillo, TX
realtor.com
———
3934 Plymouth Cir, Madison, WI
Price: $515,000
Wisconsin’s capital city is home to a diverse array of housing stock—midcentury modern included. This three-bedroom home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright was built in 1956 by the architect James Randal McDonald, who’s known for his Prairie-style homes in the state. The house is packed with all the goods for a Wisconsin winter. There’s a fireplace in the finished basement, panoramic wooded views (from the master suite), and brick interior walls, with a design that truly brings the outdoors in.
3934 Plymouth Circle, Madison, WI
realtor.com
———
4800 Byron Pl, Oklahoma City, OK
Price: $399,900
This renovated three-bedroom ranch from 1955 sits on nearly an acre—and a quiet cul-de-sac—in the city’s Bush Hills neighborhood. Custom geometric tilework in the baths, white shiplap ceilings in the living room, and quartz countertops in the kitchen (a nice pairing with the restored original metal cabinets) are modern additions that acknowledge the past. For a painter or woodworker, the 420-square-foot detached shop is a dream.
4800 Byron Place, Oklahoma City, OK
realtor.com
———
1539 Belleair Rd, Clearwater, FL
Price: $250,000
It’s amazing how a coat of charcoal-gray paint—as well as the cheery yellow front door—freshened up the exterior of this 1959 home for the current century. Inside you’ll find a turquoise oven, range and sink, and original wood cabinets in the kitchen. Although the house has only two bedrooms and one bath, it’s a smart use of space, with a large yard and tons of windows coaxing in natural light.
1539 Belleair Road, Clearwater, FL
realtor.com
———
530 Fifth Ave NE, Hickory, NC
Price: $399,000
Check out that cool carport! Located 60 miles north of Charlotte, this three-bedroom, red-brick ranch features artisan details, like cypress tongue-and-groove walls stretching all the way to the vaulted ceilings and a wall-length brick fireplace in the living room. It has built-in storage throughout. A glass-walled sunroom and a lighted, raised outdoor patio (with an outdoor shower!) make this place a keeper. Updates include stone countertops in the kitchen and new tile in the master bathroom.
530 Fifth Ave. NE,  Hickory, NC
realtor.com
———
58 Winston Ln, Garrison, NY
Price: $575,000
Twenty-five miles south of Poughkeepsie, NY, near West Point Academy, and 10 minutes from a train to Manhattan, lies this dusty-gray 1950 ranch with midcentury hallmarks including high ceilings. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms were recently updated, and new windows have been installed. A climate-controlled outbuilding is ripe for plotting landscaping or art projects, and a third bedroom could easily be added to the basement if it was finished.
58 Winston Lane, Garrison, NY

15 Bathrooms That Will Make You Fall in Love With Penny Tile
Tumblr media
Penny tile can give any bathroom a polished look. Image: Hisbalit
Tile in the bathroom might sound as original as florals for spring. But like any good floral print, the wow factor of the tile all comes down to the one you choose. Don’t be square! The penny tile (also known as a penny round) is a small tile in a round or hexagonal shape that can help you make a visual impact in your bathroom.
Penny tiles are often spotted in historic homes, but we’re also starting to see them in the hippest coffee shops and hottest bars. Why? They add an interesting aesthetic, they’re extremely versatile and – like any good tile – they’re also easy to maintain in even the wettest areas.

Using penny tile in the bathroom
Let’s talk more about the versatility of these tiny tiles. You can find them in traditional ceramic or porcelain, but they’re also available in more interesting materials like glass or metal. And before you despair about the work involved in laying what is essentially a low-key mosaic, don’t worry. You can buy penny tile already arranged on a mesh backing so all you have to do is grout around the established pattern. It’s a little trick that will have people thinking you invested a lot in establishing a high-class look for your bathroom.

The resurgence of the penny tile
This isn’t the penny tile’s first time in the sun. The tile – especially the hexagonal variety – was popular in homes across the country in the early 20th century. That’s while you’ll often spot it in historic homes, or in homes where people are trying to create a vintage feel.
That doesn’t mean this tile style only works if you’re going for a retro feel, though. Choosing a single color of penny tile can deliver a clean, minimalist look. On the other end of the spectrum, choosing a broad range of colored tiles and arranging them in interesting patterns delivers maximalism. Clearly, this is a versatile design feature. Let’s take a look at some more bathrooms that use penny tile to get your creative wheels turning.

dasMOD Renovated This 80s Inspired Home into a Modern California Residence
dasMOD sought homes in Southern California that were in need of some love, but not complete overhauls. They landed on the 80s inspired Via Tiempo house in Encinitas and quickly set out to bring it into modern times. The home had good bones but had some flaws that needed to be worked out, like improving the views, functionality, and opening the floor plan up.
The residence benefits from being located near the ocean in the up-and-coming Cardiff-by-the-Sea neighborhood. Large black rimmed windows and sliding glass doors frame views of the California landscape and sea.
The interior, with the help of Handsome Salt, was given a lush, contemporary makeover that still feels cozy and livable. An eclectic color palette, that includes pops of color and a variety of neutrals, brings a playful element. The kitchen pairs mint lower cabinets with oak wooden uppers, which are topped off with copper details, for a stylish, modern aesthetic.
High ceilings and the new open living plan gives the interior a feeling of airiness. The large space opens up to the backyard blurring the division of indoor/outdoor spaces.
In one of the bathrooms, they used Solar yellow Rex Ray tiles from Modwalls with a dark custom vanity and a marble countertop.
Hygge & West wallpaper designed by Lisa Congdon was used in the guest bedroom.

Faris is on fire today, y'all! ・・・ I had the opportunity to stop by my clients place this morning to snap some photos! This kitchen features #modwalls glass tile in lemongrass, #UltraCraft cabinetry in pebble gray, and the natural look quartz countertop #Helix by #Silestone. We are still wrapping up some of the details including the installation of grass cloth wallpaper in the master bedroom, dining room furniture selection, as well as art selection and placement. I can not wait to have this place professional photographed by @rinsestudios! I am so beside myself with how this project came together and how much of a joy it was to work with the clients and contractor over the last two years! #tvlcreative #interiordesign #condoremodel #kitchenremodel #kitchendesign #modernkitchen #theartofconstruction (at TVL Creative)
