One week of night vision
Hi guys, so this weeks post is going to be about my thoughts after owning my night vision for a week. So ever since I got the night vision, I have taken it out every single night since getting it from Brownells and there are a handful of things I feel like I should mention in this post. Things being stuff that I thought was going to be true that I found out we’re not and things that I, just happen to notice while using it. That being said, let’s get into it.
First things first, I didn’t realize how much the weather played a role in using a vision. The day that I got my PVS 14 we just so happen to be in a new moon phase so there was absolutely no moon visible. That being said, I was still blown away the first time I use this, even though it was the worst night to be using night vision. Things like ambient light from more populated locations or even just the moon make a huge difference in using night vision. One more thing to consider is cloud coverage, so I’ve been using mine primarily in the woods where it’s already darker, but then you add no moon and cloud coverage, and it’s very dark, but yet I was still amazed by the performance of this nightvision device.
The second thing I want to talk about is movement under night vision. Initially, I thought this was going to be a very hard task from everything I’ve ever heard before but to my surprise it was actually very easy. Walking through the woods and on trails and even walking around in my pole barn with a bunch of junk all over the place , I didn’t have any issues with doing that. I think the main thing to keep in mind when you’re doing this is remember that you’re wearing a night vision device and remember that your senses are a little bit decreased and then you should be fine. I do think it’s very important though to get out and walk around and move and do things with your night vision before you expect to be some high tier operator with it.
Next up is going to be the night vision accessories that I have mounted on my rifle and pistol. Initially, I didn’t really know what to expect with this. When using the sionyx camera and looking at my IR output, I wasn’t blown away with the performance of any of the items that I chose. But once having proper night vision in hand, they work far better than what they look like on the camera. Obviously, just like with all civilian illuminator devices I wish the illuminator on my holosun had a little bit more power behind it. But the laser itself has been fantastic. The Modlite ir850 light head is ridiculously powerful, and will basically light up the woods for as far as you can see, and then that brings me to the streamlight vir2 that I have mounted on the Glock 44. Overall, I’m very happy with that for the price and it comes in that I think it’s a fantastic option. It throws a fair amount of flood which is nice for a pistol and the laser itself is very easy to pick up as well. I’ve been very happy with all the choices that I had made in the IR department.
Overall, the biggest hurdle with us is just getting the night vision itself. Once you do that, then you can figure the rest out very easily. Like I mentioned earlier in this, I got mine from brownells, which I will have links down below to check them out. Along with all of my IR devices as well You can use code BOP10 to save a bunch of money over there on this stuff.
Anyways, if you made it here, thanks for reading night vision is super cool, and I highly recommend trying to get some for yourself because being able to see in the dark is an amazing feeling.

Product Spotlight…Modlite PLHv2 Weaponlight
We live in exciting times in regards to the shear number of firearms, firearm platforms and accessories available to the consumer. Having multiple companies out there competing hard for your dollar and patronage benefits us in the end. The weapon light category is surely no different. There are many, many weapon light companies out there today. Some, such as Surefire and Streamlight have been around for many, many decades. Then there are younger companies, such as Cloud Defensive and Modlight. Recently I had the need for a new weapon light to mount onto my Geissele DDC SBR. Of course it had to be in some form of FDE or tan finish. I decided to go ahead and try out one of the Modlite offerings and I’m so glad that I did.
Brownells has a number of the different light configurations that Modlite offers. I decided to purchase the PLHv2 version from Brownells. They offer this weapon light in a short config that uses the popular 18350 rechargeable battery as well as a longer version that uses the 18650 rechargeable battery. Since this was going on a short rifle with minimal rail space, I opted for the shorter 18350 scout light version in FDE. Brownells has a couple of different variations of this light that have slightly different price points. I knew that my plan was to add some sort of external light switch or pressure pad and luckily, they opffer this light with the body, light head, battery and battery charger, but without a tail cap. This cuts the price down somewhat and allows the end user to use that money saved towards their preferred tail cap. Modlites are compatible with most Surefire compatible tail caps. Since my plan was to run a pressure switch, I opted for a standard Surefire tailcap with the pressure switch socket.
Once I received the light, I was extremely pleased with it’s overall fit and finish. It is just a weapon light after all, but small details do count somewhat at the price point. The specifications on this particular version is approximately 1350 lumens and 54,000 candela. This thing is super bright for such a small weapon light. All parts are made in the U.S.A. which is important to me, especially considering the cost of a quality weapon light such as this one. It also has a lifetime warranty against any defects wehich is comforting. If the light ever fails, your investment is covered. When testing the beam in an enclosed space, the hot spot is very well defined, but not overly so that your target is washed out. It appears that this particular light would have a very good throw at distance as well.
So in conclusion, this was a purchase I had on my radar and honestly sorry I didn’t try out a Modlite any sooner than I did. It works perfectly on my Geissele 10.5” DDC SBR build I recently completed. If you’re in the market for a new weapon light, you owe it to yourself to take a long hard look at what Modlite has to offer. This definitely won’t be my last Modlite purchase.

Think I’m gonna pick up a Modlite hand light. The other harvest years I’ve just used weapon lights, but I would like something powerful that I can point at things without flagging them.
I was going to buy a Safariland holster for my Glock 45, but I’m gonna conceal it instead. I keep a long gun in my work area. I think I’m gonna run AR-15 this year just for weight.
Dammit, I love planning gear setups. Each situation requires a different kit.

Carbine course prep
All right guys so this weeks post I wanted to make about what I’m doing to prepare for a carbine course that I am taking this month. This post isn’t meant to be a exact formula for what you should do. It is more meant to be a way to show what I’m doing and maybe to get an idea of what would work for you.
The first step is to head over to brownells and grab yourself a case of rifle ammo, and use code BOP10 to save some money on that. I grabbed a case which was perfect. They gave me 500 rounds to train with over the couple weekends that I have before the class. And then it gives me 500 rounds to take to the class.
The course that I’m taking is through MDFI which is a local company here in Michigan to me that offers a ton of really cool firearms training at various locations in Michigan. The class and I’m gonna take us their foundation carbine. Luckily, I was able to find a foundation qualifier PDF file on their website so I can get a little bit of a Headstart on that.
Overall, I really like this, because all four of the shooting drills in my opinion are very useful even outside of just preparing for this class. Next weeks post is going to be about another very good training aid that I highly recommend picking up. All four of the shooting drills have a par time of six seconds, which is very easily achievable, even while taking your time And making good well-placed shots. There is also a qualifier target that is printable in the same PDF file that prints on just a single sheet of paper. It is supposed to be shot from 15 yards which seems like it is very close but you can easily shoot outside of the box from this distance.
For me, I have found this very useful to do as a preparation for this class. I’m sure there is tons of things that I’m going to learn in this class that will make this even easier to do. But I think this is a very good start for anyone that wants to just be prepared to go to their first rifle course.
As always big thank you to brownells for being such an awesome company and helping out tons of people like myself. They carry tons of awesome parts optics, complete firearms, etc. and as always the links will be down below to them along with the coupon codes to save you some money.
Thanks for reading.
