Legendary classical musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan dies at 89
Renowned Indian classical musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan passed away at the age of 89 on Sunday afternoon at his residence here, his family said.
Khan's daughter-in-law Namrata Gupta Khan told PTI that the veteran breathed his last at 12.37 pm at his Bandra home.
"He was fine in the morning... But during his massage he vomited. His eyes were shut and he was breathing slowly. I tried connecting to doctors but by the time they came, he had already died," Namrata said.
She said the family is in shock due to Khan's sudden demise as he was keeping well. The musician was going to turn 90 on March 3.
Khan had suffered a brain stroke in 2019 that left one side of his body paralysed. Namrata also shared the news about Khan's death on her Facebook page.
"With a very heavy heart, I inform you all that my father-in law, the pillar of our family and a legend of our nation, Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan sahab has left for his heavenly abode few mins ago," she posted.
Khan's last rites were performed at Santacruze Kabrastan in the evening.
Born on March 3, 1931 in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, Khan was the eldest son in a family of four brothers and three sisters.
His father, Ustad Waris Hussain Khan was the son of celebrated musician Ustad Murred Baksh, while his mother, Sabri Begum, was the daughter of Ustad Inayat Husain Khan, credited as the founder of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of music.
Khan received his basic classical music training from his father and later studied music under his cousin, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, followed by Padma Bhushan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018.
In 2003, he was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artistes.
Mourning Khan's death Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the musician's passing away has left "our cultural world poorer".
"The passing away of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab leaves our cultural world poorer. He was a doyen of music, a stalwart of creativity whose works endeared him to people across generations. I have fond memories of interacting with him. Condolences to his family and admirers," Modi posted on Twitter.
Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, Sitar maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and music composer AR Rahman also paid tributes to the musician.
Mangeshkar said she was "deeply saddened" by the news of Khan's death.
"I got to know the news of passing away of  Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Saheb. I am deeply saddened. He was not only a very good singer but also a very good human being," she said, adding, her niece had also learnt music from him.
Rahman remembered Khan as the  "sweetest teacher".
"The sweetest teacher of all... May the Ghafoor-ur-Rahim give you a special place in the next world #UstadGhulamMustafa," he wrote.
Amjad Ali Khan said Khan's passing away has left him heartbroken.
"He was one of the most respected and versatile Vocalists of our country. My deepest condolences to his family. May his soul Rest In Peace," he posted on the microblogging site.
"My teacher. Guru to a student who just wouldn't stay on. Great teacher. Great artist. Hindustani Classical Music has been bereaved. His students have been orphaned. I have been orphaned. RIP Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Saab. Stay strong brothers Murtuza, Qadir and Rabbani," filmmaker Hansal Mehta tweeted.

Bolly Buzz: NCB holds meeting to decide on the next course of action, Ranbir Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar celebrate birthday, Kshitij Prasad alleges he was forced to take Karan Johar’s name | Hindi Movie News
The weekend gone by has been long and controversial on the Bollywood front. And we have kick-started the new week on the same note. From the NCB holding meeting to decide on the next course of action to Ranbir Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar celebrating their birthdays today, here’s all that happened today. ETimes brings a new segment Bolly Buzz which goes beyond the usual mix of news and gossip to give all its readers a roundup of trending stories of the day. Ranbir Kapoor, who turned a year younger today, celebrated his special day with his near and dear ones. Kareena Kapoor Khan, sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and the Kapoor family raised a toast to the birthday boy with some of the cutest social media posts.
Apart from him, Lata Mangeshkar too celebrated her 91st birthday today. Several Bollywood celebrities including Kangana Ranaut, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, Shankar Mahadevan, and many others took to social media to extend some thoughtful birthday wishes to the veteran singer. But making the day extra special, was the PM who called the legend to wish her on her birthday. “Spoke to respected Lata Didi and conveyed birthday greetings to her. Praying for her long and healthy life,” Modi said in a tweet. After the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) grilled Deepika Padukone, Rakul Preet Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor, and the others on the ongoing drug abuse angle in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, it seems that the stars’ phones were taken, statements recorded, superiors called in and top-secret meeting held to discuss the next course of action. Reportedly, NCB has also been given the green signal to call more celebs for questioning.
Meanwhile, B-town has been buzzing about Kshitij Prasad allegedly being “FORCED” and specifically asked to name Karan Johar in his statement to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Prasad’s lawyer Satish Manshinde alleged “Torture and ill-treatment” by the agency, besides the coercion; claims that the NCB has denied. Meanwhile, Prasad even went on to claim in a statement that he is “being framed” in this drug case.
While the NCB continues with its investigations, fans of Sushant Singh Rajput have turned their focus back on the CBI and are now demanding some answers. Citing that agency has been probing the case for over a month, fans and even Sushant’s family have been demanding an official statement on the agency’s findings in this case. Meanwhile, netizens went ahead and started trending #AIIMSBeFairWithSSRReport in a bid to encourage the medical agency to release their findings in this death case.

Farmers protest: MEA slams ‘vested interests,’ social media turns battle zone
NEW DELHI: The farmers’ protests that have been raging on Delhi’s borders escalated into a full-blown global war of words on social media on Wednesday with tweets flying from both sides and the ministry of external affairs taking the unusual step of reacting to tweets by private foreign individuals with a detailed official statement and senior government ministers and Indian celebrities joining in the pushback. The foreign ministry said “vested interest groups” had been trying to “mobilise international support against India” and that “the temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible”. US vice-president Kamala Harris’s niece Meena Harris, who’s a lawyer, climate activist Greta Thunberg, US House foreign affairs committee member Jim Costa, YouTuber Lilly Singh, poet Rupi Kaur, rapper Russ, former adult film star Mia Khalifa, UK MP Claudia Webbe and a host of others had earlier come out in support of the ongoing farmers’ agitation after Rihanna’s one-line post on Tuesday. “Why aren’t we talking about this?!,” the international pop star with a Twitter following of over 100 million had written with the hashtag #FarmersProtest and a CNN report on the internet shutdown around Delhi.
Tumblr media
The foreign ministry statement was followed by actors Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, producer-directors Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor, singer Lata Mangeshkar and cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli posting tweets with the hashtags IndiaTogether and IndiaAgainstPropaganda that the MEA spokesperson had used in the statement. Several members of the Modi government also joined in the counter-attack. “No propaganda can deter India’s unity. No propaganda can stop India to attain new heights (sic). Propaganda can’t decide India’s fate, only progress can. India stands united and together to achieve progress,” tweeted Union home minister Amit Shah.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman and a number of others, such as Hardeep Puri, tweeted parts of the MEA statement. Junior home minister G Kishan Reddy was more blunt. “We will not be cowed down by an international gang of anarchy lovers.” Defending the new laws and underlining the government’s efforts to find a solution, the MEA, in its statement, said: “The Parliament of India, after a full debate and discussion, passed reformist legislation relating to the agricultural sector… A very small section of farmers in parts of India have some reservations about these reforms. Respecting the sentiments of the protesters, the government of India has initiated a series of talks with their representatives. The government has even offered to keep the laws on hold, an offer iterated by no less than the PM of India.
Tumblr media
“Yet, it is unfortunate to see vested interest groups trying to enforce their agenda on these protests, and derail them. This was egregiously witnessed on January 26, India’s Republic Day. A cherished national commemoration, the anniversary of the inauguration of the Constitution of India, was besmirched, and violence and vandalism took place in the Indian capital. Some of these vested interest groups have also tried to mobilise international support against India. Instigated by such fringe elements, Mahatma Gandhi statues have been desecrated in parts of the world. This is extremely disturbing for India and for civilised society everywhere.” The statement concluded by saying: “Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken.”
