on the court he stands the weight of the racquet the soft grip of the handle its familiarity in his palm thinking of when he first held one much younger a boy then now a man the sun bleeds orange and pink the shadows grow long a game of love they said but where is the love in the relentless pursuit of victory over another the crowd murmurs hushed tones he hears them but doesn’t swirling in his ears like the distant waves of an ocean a memory of a beach where he played with his father the ball tossed high its parabola against the sky a metaphor for ambition or perhaps for hope his serve swift and strong the ball like a bullet yet the opponent nimble agile responding with grace and force a dance between them sometimes violent sometimes delicate but always passionate they move forward they retreat a game or is it life itself the ache in his legs the sweat trickling down reminds him of other battles other courts some won some lost the taste of victory sweet the bitterness of defeat just as intense and yet here he stands racquet in hand playing not just his opponent but his past his future his doubts his dreams the ball now in his court a decision to make to serve to falter to play or not to play that is the question and as the sun sinks lower and the lights take over he knows that this is more than just a game it’s a reflection of who he is who he was and who he wants to be and with that he serves. More praise for 'Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography, 1946-1964,' curated by @thesarahmeister for @themuseumofmodernart Julia Curl writes, "Tucked apart from the maze of Modernist superstars on MoMA’s fifth floor, 'Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography, 1946-1964' is easy to miss—but it shouldn’t be. This one-room exhibition comprises over 60 striking photographs taken by members of São Paulo’s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB), a group of amateur photographers whose work was nonetheless at the vanguard of postwar modernism. If you’re wondering why you’ve never heard of the FCCB, it is likely because Fotoclubismo is 'the first museum exhibition of Brazilian modernist photography outside of Brazil,' as the press release states. This long-overdue acknowledgment of the FCCB’s 'unforgettable achievements' is a reminder that Modernism was not a uniquely European phenomenon; while the photographs in Fotoclubismo are clearly in dialogue with the greats of the Western avant-garde, they make their own contributions to the medium." Returned to the Tate Modern yesterday to catch some more great art. The Radical Eye exhibition was excellent - it was incredible to see the original prints of some true classics, including Man Ray's 'Glass Tears' 1932, and Dorothea Lange's 'Migrant Mother' 1936. #tate #tatemodern #theradicaleye #eltonjohn #sireltonjohn #blackandwhitephotography #photography #modernistphotography #london #art #artshow #photographyshow #artinspiration (at Tate)

Sunbaker, 1935 . Max Dupain was, arguably, Australia's most respected and influential black & white photographer of the 20th century. . His images capture a long gone era in which Australian society was vastly different from what it is now. With his documentary eye his images exude quality and demonstrate Dupain's mastership of light and form. . Dupain was considered the pioneer of modernism in Australian photography, an approach that departed from the sentimentality of soft focused, nostalgic imagery to the simplified world of light contrasts, sharp focus, varying angles and creative compositions. . His vast body of work covered Australian portraiture, landscapes, beaches, nudes, still life and cities. . September is Hispanic History Month, so we're featuring a few photographs from one of our favorite and most enlightening photobooks of 2021: 'Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography and the Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante, 1946–1964,' published by @themuseumofmodernart and expertly curated and edited by @thesarahmeister Published in conjunction with the first major museum exhibition of Brazilian modernist photography outside of Brazil, Fotoclubismo presents the groundbreaking creative achievements of São Paulo’s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante, a group of amateur photographers founded in 1939 that is essentially unknown today to European and North American audiences. The vast majority of FCCB members pursued photography outside of their day jobs as lawyers, businessmen, accountants, journalists, engineers, biologists and bankers, but they were nonetheless quite serious about their artistic ambition. Their radical experimentations with process and form and their determination to distill inventive compositions from everyday life contributed to their esteemed reputation within an active international postwar scene—a status that has been all but forgotten. This richly illustrated publication assembles a robust selection of photographs to introduce the FCCB’s photographic experiments to an international audience. Six chapters highlight individual achievements nestled between thematic groupings that suggest the breadth of the club’s talent. Curator Sarah Meister’s essay situates the FCCB within the broader contemporary art scene in Brazil as well as a dynamic network of photographers around the world, and offers fresh insight into the status of the amateur then and now. This is the first non-Portuguese-language publication to grapple with these photographs that were widely heralded at the time of their creation. An unexpected review of 'Curtis Moffat: Silver Society: Experimental Photography and Design, 1923-1935' — published by @steidlverlag — is up now @theindependentphoto @jbrightphoto writes, "Photographer, painter, interior and theatre designer, architectural patron, and keen exponent of modernism: American artist Curtis Moffat was undoubtedly one of the most influential and accomplished artists of his day. 'Silver Society,' a monograph by Steidl, reveals some of his most compelling photographic works, drawn from the extensive archives donated by his daughter to the Victoria and Albert Museum in the early 2000s. It includes portraits, photograms, candid ‘snapshots’, and a selection of striking color imagery…" Read the full review via linkinbio. #curtismoffat #silversociety #modernistphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CRMrqlWsuVI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Talk about leaving on a high note! @missroseneditions reviews 'Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography and the Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante, 1946–1964'—the final show by pioneering curator @thesarahmeister for @themuseumofmodernart "Featuring more than 60 photographs drawn from the MoMA’s collection, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue present a series of works that offer indelible insight into mid-century modernism with a Brazilian touch… In organizing 'Fotoclubissimo,' Meister didn’t simply make space for a missing chapter of art history, but interrogates ideas of the past that have long since past their expiration date. 'I’m interested in how things fall into and out of fashion and consciousness,' Meister says. 'This group was incredibly well known in the 1950s. Their photographs were awarded prizes on six continents. They were highly esteemed practitioners in dialogue with artists in Germany, France, and the United States. To go from that to the moment we have now where I have never heard from any of them, that shows you how fickle history can be…'" Read the full review via linkinbio. #fotoclubisimo #brazilianmodernistphotography #brazilianphotography #midcenturyphotography #brazilianmodernism #modernistphotography #FotoCineClubeBandeirante #photoclub #amateurphotography #saopaulo https://www.instagram.com/p/COvmq-WJgP6/?igshid=18mr2mef9lux7

Photos from 'Berenice Abbott: Portraits of Modernity,' a staff pick for Women's History Month. This superbly printed 248-page monograph presents legendary American photographer Berenice Abbott’s work in three categories: her portraits, photographs of the city and scientific photographs. The opening section presents Abbott’s portraits of mold-breaking individuals who changed the world from the mid-1920s onward such as Djuna Barnes, the New Yorker's Janet Flanner, Jean Cocteau and James Joyce. The second part offers a dazzling portrait of New York which takes into account Abbott’s relations with and her fascination for the work of Eugène Atget by including an introductory group of his photographs, which she printed from his negatives. The third and final section focuses on Abbott’s scientific photographs, which she started to produce in the late 1940s. Berenice Abbott was undoubtedly one of the defining portraitists of New York. Shops, people, bridges, streets, interiors, famous buildings under construction seen from outside or from above (the same ones that are visible today from the highway that runs round Manhattan) together make up this portrait. Can you guess who took these early 20th century photos? You might be surprised. They’re painterly, they’re romantic, they’re pictorial. They’re from… ‘Edward Weston: The Early Years,’ presenting 115 early photographs—including rare surviving prints from the unplumbed holdings of the Lane Collection at the @mfaboston . These photos show how Weston developed from a young man experimenting with his camera into the towering American Modernist who influenced every generation to follow. #edwardweston #pictorialism #modernistphotography #vintagephotography
