what really sucks about AI art is that, since it's coming primarily from tech bros and intensely capitalist nonsense, it's morally and ethically reprehensible, but it could, in theory, be so useful for an artist if handled ethically.
like, okay, imagine you have a lot of art you've drawn over the years, because you're, say, a prolific comics artist. comics are a really hard business for artists to be in, because if you work for a publisher in the direct market, you have an extremely tight schedule for essentially very little money every month.
but imagine if you could train a machine on your art, allowing it to do layouts/sketches for you that you can then refine, or maybe backgrounds because you're good at them but find them extremely tedious, or even just to help you conceptualize the blocking for a scene/panel/page.
that could be so fucking useful for an artist in any business where they're low on time but need to be high on output to stay afloat.
but no, instead we have awful tech startup capitalist assholes stealing art to train their machines because they don't understand â or perhaps refuse to understand â that just because it's online does not make it free game to, essentially, turn it into fodder for a high-tech collage engine without the consent or participation or reimbursement of the artists whose work is training the thing.
It ruins the tech for everyone else, and that pisses me off so much because, like, 90% of technologies and tools are morally neutral, but how many are used under capitalism often renders them unethical almost by default, especially in the tech sphere.
and it's like, this is absolutely capitalism's fault, and the fault of a culture of tech bros who, at best, see new technologies as a flashy way to make a boatload of money very quickly with minimal regulation because governments & legal systems are usually like 10-20 years behind any given technical advancement.
and it sucks all the joy and excitement out of futurism and tech for those of us who want a better world for the sake of a better world, not to make a ton of money or make ourselves metaphorically or literally immortal.
#this is why if asked i will say im a retrofuturist#i believe that the ideal form of the future is described by utopianist sci fi of the 20th century#and works of writers like le Guin#modern tech culture ruins everything i love about futurism and technology#rant#long post

Headcanons of Krel living on earth because heâs my favorite and I love him and I havenât seen anyone do this yet so I feel like I have to
^^^^^because of this very moment I love the idea of Mary and Darci befriending Krel.
Since Aja,Vex and Eli went back to Akaridion-5, Mother was destroyed, and Claire was busy with Trollhunting stuff, earth gets pretty lonely. So Mary and Darci adopt him into their friend group.Â
At first Krel was a little apprehensive to joining their friend group, but he quickly warmed up to it because, he, being Krel, loves the attention.
like I can totally see Mary and Darci taking Krel to like a mall or something and doing those like teen romcom movie shopping montages where he goes into a changing room and the girls judge the outfit until they find the perfect one.
I personally believe Krel would adopt a soft boy look, with like oversized button ups and t shirts tucked into jeans, but thats just me.
anyway, because heâs friends with Mary and Darci, Krel has a new found social popularity in Arcadia.
because of this, Krel would prolly get nominated for Spring Fling king and shit
I would say Krel wouldnât really care about being nominated, but seeing how he cared so much about the science fair and the Battle of the Bands, he would definitely care
Steve is conflicted because he wants to be Spring Fling King, but he canât mess with Krel like he did with Jim and Eli cause Krel is his girlfriendâs brotherÂ
Krel notices this and takes advantage of it to mess with Steve and actually tries to win.
like Krel would just dominate the contests, and his theme presentation would be the flashiest and most appealing and people would just generally like him, and that would really worry Steve
like Krel, with four arms would be really good at the Touch-a-Truck-athon or whatever its called.
Krel would prolly let Steve win anyway because watching Steve squirm and freak out over prolly losing the crown and not being able to do anything about it cause he's Aja's brother is much better than any highschool dance crown
also the school 100% asks Krel to DJ future dances and events to save money, and Krel absolutely loves it
He would also definitely do the school play. Seeing how much he enjoyed being in Toby and Eli's short film, and again, he loves the attention, he would totally be downÂ
Also it would just be another chance to mess with Steve to be the lead.Â
Because of this, Ms. Janeth would do another Shakespearean play, but do one of those modern renditions. Like it's the same play just in a modern setting, to take advantage of Krel's Akaridion form like they did with Jim's armor.Â
If not in the play he would do stage crew/tech.
Like he would create elaborate settings for them using A5 tech and Ms. Janeth would adore itÂ
moving on, because home life is pretty lonely with just the Lucy and Ricky for company, Krel loves to host his friends for parties and sleepovers and whatever
and since Krel lives in the coolest house on the block, they love coming over
He hosts girlâs night every other week with Mary, Darci, and Clarie (becauuse she deserves a fucking break)Â
since weâve all agreed that Krel is 100% a gaylien, I love the idea that he casually comes out during a girls night
like Mary would be like âSo Krel, are there any girls you like?â and Krelâs just like, â*snort* Girls? Who ever said I like girls?â and the others are like ââŠ.....?â and Krel just rolls his eyes and says "I like boys, ladiesâ and theyâre like âooooohhhh, okay. Cool.â
So now they spend girls night talking about boys. Claire and Darci about their mans and Mary and Krel about cute boys.
One day the girls give Krel a little rainbow pin and Krelâs just like âwhatâs this?â And the girls tell him that itâs an earth symbol for the gays and heâs like âtheres a symbol for that here? I didnt think it was that big of a deal. On A5 itâs pretty normalâ and the girls explain why theres a symbol and heâs like âoh shoot wow, thanks" and he put it on his backpack.
Heâs pretty confused the first time someone is homophobic towards him cause like that kind if behavior doesnt happen on A5 and hes just like, âwhy does this bother you? I hardly know youâ and just brushes it off. Its doesnt really bother him, mainly cause he doesnt know the earth insults towards gay people so he doesnât even realize, but if the girls (or Toby, or even Steve, too) catch anyone being homophobic towards their friend they will attack that asshole on sight. Especially Mary and Steve
Random person on the street: Ha, *slur*
Marry: WHAT DID YOU SAY TO HIM BITCH???
Krel: Marry its fine, itâs not that big of a dealoHSEKLOSANDGAYLENMARYGETOFFOFHIM
Marry: SAY IT AGAIN ASSHAT, I D A R E YOU
Claire and Darci: *trying to hold Mary back* maRY NO
Steve: THATS MY NINJA KICKING SPACE ANGEL GIRLFRIEND'S BROTHER BUTTSNACK I'LL END YOU
Toby: *now chasing after Steve to stop him* stEVE NO
Mary would 100% find out who the rando is and destroy their life on social media. Like she would leak their job, phone number, email, school/college (if applicable) to her thousands of followers and absolutely ruin them with no remorse. And honestly, good for her
Also whilst on the subject, Krel can not drive or cook for 2 reasons: 1. Hes gay and 2. Heâs a prince so heâs never had to do either before
Like he can obviously do math but thatâs it.
Proof? That one scene in Wizards when Douxie had him drive the airship. You know the one.
Coach Lawrence refuses to get in a car with him at Drivers Ed after the 3rd day Krel shows up.
Krel gets addicted to sugary coffee shop-esc drinks thanks to Darci. Not coffee cause we saw in 3Below Part 1 that he doesnt like coffee, but refreshers, coolattas, frappuccinos etc Definitely.
As for warm drinks, heâs more of a tea person.
Moving on
He face calls Aja everyday because he really misses her
He tells her all about school and his friends and whatever and Aja tells him about the changes sheâs making to the A5 government
Thanks to the wormhole they visit each other often. Sometimes Steve tags along cause he misses his ninja kicking space queen angel girlfriend. (And Eli, but that's also for another post)
They take turns housing Luug.
Krel genuinely loves it on earth, but he hates the primitive technology so he begs Aja to send him supplies and materials for his projects.Â
He would 10000% apply to HexTech for an after school job. Seeing his reaction to HT in Wizards and the fact that âAkaridion tech and magic are so compatibleâ, he would be the perfect addition to the HT staff.Â
The Wizards wouldnât be sure at first but after he shows them A5 tech and Douxieâs email of recommendation about the time loop thing they made together, the wizards are like âoh yeah we definitely keeping this kid. This is going to be so much fun.â
Their inventions become more and more extravagant because Krel can and he's just extra and the wizards love it.
He would definitely find a way to use magic using A5 tech. But he would have to study magic in order to figure out how, so the wizards help him learn all about magic. And since he's learned everything there is to learn about science and technology and whatever, he's super excited to learn about something completely different and interesting. The wizards are happy to teach him. He would be the first Akaridion to learn and use magic
Like he would make his own staff with his serrator and everything. He's like "earn a staff? Nah fuck that going to make my own"
Speaking of which he really likes human swear words. But he doesnt know when it is and isn't inappropriate to say these swear words so he's gotten in trouble a few times for swearing at the wrong time
For example:
Ms. Janeth: excuse me Mr. Tarron?
Krel: what the fuck do you want?
Everyone in the room: krEL NO
Anyway, back to Krel at HT, thanks to Toby, he would definitely have a bowl of candy in his little lab. More like multiple jars of different candy just scattered around the room. Small candy like fun sized chocolate and skittles and jelly beans and whatever
And a mini fridge, of course.
Steve, Toby and Arrrgh come over to the lab alot to mess around.
Toby has a lot of sci-fi requests for Krel to make
Toby: do you think you can make a shrink ray? Laser blasters? Invisible ray? My own hoverboard? My own serrator *gASP* WITH A WARHAMMER SETTING???? WITH SPACE ARMOR TO MATCH???!!!???!
Krel: Toby you already have a warhammer and armor why do you need more?
Toby: I dont have a space warhammer and armor Krel!!!!!!
Going back to school life, I feel like Krel would take an interest in Spanish class. I mean, his human form is latino and in Trollhunters (I'm pretty sure the lightning in a bottle episode) he said "Si" in response to a question someone asked him, so I feel like he would like to learn another human language.Â
I also feel like he would just like to learn about Latin American culture in general since Mother gave him that form. He'd like to get in touch with his human self.Â
Claire (when she isnt busy Trollhunting with Jim and the gang) is happy help him learn about Latin American culture and help him with his Spanish.Â
Krel, being a fast learner, becomes fluent quickly with a perfect accent.Â
Señor Uhl, who already liked the Tarrons to begin with, would really appreciate this.Â
Claire's dad would also appreciate this.
Since he has such a fascination with human music, Krel would especially love Latin American music. Specifically reggaeton, since its kind of like techno music in a way and he already likes techno music.
And naturally, he learns to dance. All the styles of latin american dances. And he becomes quite the favorite on the dance floor.
He and Claire become great dance partners cause they both have the natural Latino rhythm and because Jim respects and trusts his girlfriend he doesnt mind them dancing together at parties and stuff
Although, Jim does ask for dance help at some point cause it looks like fun and he wants to dance with his beautiful talented incredible amazing gf and Krel is happy to teach him and anyone else who wants dance help.Â
GUITAR LESSONS with Douxie cause in 3Below Krel said he really wanted to learn how to play guitar, steals Shannonâs guitar from the bonfire and is seen multiple times strumming it throughout the series. So of course this is included.
Toby introduces Krel to YouTube and Krel instantly makes his own channel.
of course his channel is called DJ Kleb and he posts his tracks and remixes. and maybe even some vlogs
its a little slow at first, only Arcadia Oaks students are subscribed to it but Mary blows it up by posting one of Krelâs tracks on her own social media and now he has thousands of subscribers
he also gained other forms of social media like Instagram and Tiktok, platforms to post his music
At this point every girl in school wants to be friends with Krel but not in the toxic GBF (gay best friend) way, girls just genuinely think he's 10x more interesting than every other boy in Arcadia Oaks
I think that's it for now sorry this is really long I just really love Krel and I had so many ideas. Feel free to add on!!

Final Essay: Bjork's All is Full of Love meets a Cyborg Manifesto
Is all full of love, even humanoid robots? Directed by Chris Cunningham, 1997, Bjorkâs All is Full of Love music video is a visual and technical sensation. Extremely cutting-edge, the video uses engineering, CGI, computer graphics, and industrial robotics to create a mechanical and erotic world.Â
By watching Bjorkâs music video and by reading Donna Hanawayâs A Cyborg Manifesto, we can dismantle preconceived ideas of AI and imagine a more dynamic future of robotics as it becomes increasingly more tangible. Guided by Chris Cunninghamâs visuals and Hanawayâs words, we can inject elements of  post-humanism into our daily lives; the works push us to question our realities and what is means to be âhumanâ and to feel love.Â
When I think of the title of bjorks song: All is full of love.... it puts immense power on the word "All." She means every thing, living and non living creatures. I think she is talking about a life force, an energy that runs through everything, that "all" is exploding with love. 13 years before Bjorkâs video, A Cyborg Manifesto was written by Donna Haraway in 1984. It is an exploration of socialist feminism and the ways cyborgs are more common in our lives than we think. âA cyborg is a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fictionâ (291). âThe cyborg is a condensed image of both imagination and material reality . . . the relation between organism and machine has been a border warâ (293). I am interested in the relation between organism and machine, between mechanical and âhuman.â The very human and guttural, choral, soft yet chaotic melodies of Bjorkâs voice contrasts with the sharp mechanical simplicity and clinical sterility of the video.Â
The viewer is presented with a set and two characters. The colors are white and black, with quiet blue and purples hues and stark lighting. Unlike many music videos today, where dramatic costume and scene changes take place, whipping you from one storyboard to another, as though the director crammed his eight ideas into 2 minutes, Chris Cunningham keeps us in one environment. I did some research on the making of this video, and the director had been obsessed with robotics as a teenager. He worked with technicians to build the female android, and then they used computer graphics in post production to generate the machines that look like something you see at the dentists, or at NASA's JPL. In A Cyborg Manifesto, Hanaway writes about the power of electronics in modern world: âMicroelectronics mediate the translations of labour into robotics, sex into genetic engineering and reproductive technologies, and mind into artificial intelligenceâ (303).
The video reminds me of our class discussions of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, post humanism, technoparanoia, and the ever developing cosmos of digital technology. It combines two things I'm interested in: science and art. Clearly, magic happens when these two domains collide. The video can also be tied to Westworld, a show we watched about a futuristic, capitalist world where robots seem so ârealâ because they express human emotion and deep comprehension of feeling.Â
In the video, an erotic connection happens. In the primary shots of the video, we see an android alone. Yet soon, a second android appears and extends her hand in a friendly way. She smiles. In A Cyborg Manifesto, Hanaway explores cyborg sexuality: âthe cyborg does not expect its father to save it through the fabrication of a heterosexual mate. Cyborgs are needy for connection . . . the main trouble with cyborgs, of course, is that they are illegitimate offspring of militarism and patriarchal capitalism.â The two female androids, either Bjorkâs mirrored self or a separate being, embrace, underscoring Hanawayâs argument that they are needy for connection. Itâs as if the bots move from frozen to melting... from a still, solid body lying on its side to a fluid, kinetic interaction.  âA coupling between organism and machine, each conceived as coded devices, in an intimacy and with a power that was not generated in the history of sexuality. Cyborg âsexâ restores some of the lovely replicative baroque of ferns and invertebrates (such nice organic prophylactics against heterosexism)â (292). Since it is two females kissing, this coupling moves against heterosexism.Â
I thought briefly about the sexualization of the female body here, especially since it's directed by a man. I thought about why there was a choice to accentuate the robots hips and breasts. In the video, aside from touching each otherâs derrieres, we see the female android on the right reach her hand slowly and tenderly into the crotch area of her partner, a subtle and tender movement occurs to suggest vaginal stimulation. I thought briefly about the kinky obsession with sex dolls and mechanical sex toys and robotic sexual partners. I thought about people's sexual digital interactions through avatars on games like Second Life and the Sims. I thought about how many modern electronic sex toys turn us into cyborgs when we use them. The definition of a cyborg is âa person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body.â When devices are inserted into or applied to the body for sexual pleasure, we take on a mechanical element that allows us to achieve orgasm beyond the normal human limitation.Â
Fluid is an important image in the video. When the two androids connect, a milky water streams through the machines and pours into the previously dry, sterile environment. The uncontrollable liquid opposes the tight grid of the set. âPeople are nowhere near so fluid, being both material and opaque. Cyborgs are there, quintessenceâ (297). Hanaways argues that cyborgs are fluid beings, and as material and opaque as the milky liquid in the video. The first time we see the fluid, it is flowing in reverse up from the white floor and around the androidâs navel. This milky water gives a sense of cleansing, of motion, of the one element crucial to human survival. When we think of electronics and water, the two donât mix well usually. We are taught to keep plugged-in appliances far away from the bath, and we learn about electrocution at a young age. We also know that if we spill water on our computers or drop our phones in the pool, they are ruined. Yet the liquid in this video does not interfere with the electronics. It flows beautifully, like the multiple mechanical hands of the two black robots. The constantly moving machines caress the androidâs bodies. They tinker, drill, screw, and tickle. Are they building her? Repairing her? They touch her without ceasing. âThe new technologies affect the social relations of both sexuality and of reproduction. The close ties of sexuality and instrumentality, of views of the body as a kind of private satisfaction and utility-maximizing machine depend on a high-tech view of the body as a biotic component or cybernetic communications systemâ (308).
Furthermore, since Bjorkâs partner bot is a mirror image of her, I thought about self love; is it Bjorkâs way of telling us to love ourselves? Or is it a lesbian robot? A bisexual robot? A queer robot? The conscious choice to make it two females, and not the age-old binary fairytale of a male and female, is wonderfully boundary-pushing. âMany womenâs lives have been structured around employment in electronics, and their intimate realities include serial heterosexual monogamyâ (304). This video moves away from serial heterosexual monogamy, yet we canât assume that the android is necessarily  homosexual. The video goes beyond labels and sexual classification. I don't want to get strangled by terminology. A nude body isn't always sexual or shocking. Futuristic technology isn't evil or frightening. It is joyful, sex should be. The video transcends our cultureâs obsession with theoretical terminology, and sometimes all-consuming/confusing/distracting/navel-gazing talks of gender and feminism (especially in college.) The video also goes beyond our society's obsession with sex. If we can watch this video without constant definition, we can see much more. We can simply feel and let the visuals arise without getting wrapped up and ultimately lost in defining or questioning. It is a immaculately made video about love and the first time I saw it, I felt immense warmth.
Is it a visual prophecy? As the modern news talks more and more about AI, we feel as though there is a lost sense of human connection and tactile warmth with the growth of technology. Yet Bjorkâs video dispels this myth and shows a world of flaming tender connection between two androids. It doesnât matter who we are, or what we are made out of. We are all made of love. We are titillated and enthralled by the kissing robots as Bjorkâs voice escalates into full expression. It's is other worldly. We do not see the creator of the robot, the people behind the machines. The video makes us think of robots differently. AI doesn't have to be distant and cold. It doesn't have to be frightening and mechanical. It doesn't have to be emotionless and monotonous. As Hanaway puts it, âWhy should our bodies end at the skin? Machines can be animated ââ given ghostly souls to make them speak or move. Machines can be prosthetic devices, intimate components, friendly selvesâ (314). All sort of looks like AI.... AI is full of love?Â
