"Despite her beating out Jan Maxwell, my beloved, I feel no lingering bitterness because Jayne Houdyshell is one of those divine character actresses who elevates every project she's in. Her Music Man nomination came as a wild surprise, but looking back, it just makes sense. She was exactly what we needed post-reopening."

MTG LANDS FULL ART
Here is a list I made of all collections with full art lands on magic: the gathering.
Finding out all of the Secret Lair Drops was not easy, the official site is horrible because all of them are listed under "secret lair drop" (SLD) instead of their collection-names. My sources were this guy and the mtg secret lair page on the wiki and the Scryfall.com search engine. Thanks a bunch.

Some vague concern regarding Modern Horizons 2
We’re getting into the thick of the spoilers for Magic’s next Premier, Big Brains Only set, Modern Horizons 2. Which feels almost too cramped, since the set drops in like two weeks, and presumably the full spoiler will be out by the pre-prerelease, which is..a week away or so? I can’t be arsed looking it up.
Tumblr media
(love this art tho)
Considering the absolute flood of releases recently, and how dramatic the impact of the first Horizons set was on just about every format in the game, I’m a little concerned about what this set is going to do to the game. The time since last format-warping card is approximately 6 months- and to be fair, that format was pauper, but the window seems to be shortening every time.
I guess what we need to do is start with an examination of Modern Horizons 1.
Tumblr media
Released in 2019, the first Modern Horizons was a set built from the ground up to be relevant in eternal formats, have an excellent draft environment, and add loads of value for casual formats like Commander and Cube. And, for the most part, I think it succeeded. While a few cards (Wrenn & Six, Astrolabe, Hogaak) definitely overshot the mark, a huge number have been generally adopted into various competitive strategies in various formats- Ephemerate is a staple roleplayer in flicker decks, Seasoned Pyromancer has kept Red relevant in tempo, Prismatic Vista is the 11th Fetchland no-one knew we needed. The power in the set is extremely well-spread, with the majority of cards radiating power.
Tumblr media
The set also had immense appeal for more casual players, as even the commons and uncommons had unique and spicy effects. Drafting it is like a Masters set draft mixed with time spiral, a high-power environment making high-power decks and all sorts of interesting mechanics mixed together. The set truly does feel like Time Spiral 2. The various cards in the set helped bump up fan-favourite tribes such as Slivers, Ninjas, and Bears, as well as the numerous Changelings making them all sorts of shenanigans more viable.
Tumblr media
The set just looks gorgeous as well? It was the first to use the Art cards that would later be used in all the Set Boosters, but this was a great opportunity to try it out, with some of the most divine art collections in any set for the past few years. Adding in all the references to older cards and characters, and non-competitive but enfranchised players like myself are going to be hooked.
Tumblr media
What makes me love MH1 so much, I think, is that if you just read the cards, it’s clear that the designers were trying to make every card stand out, by just going “what if” for every single one. What if our typical 3/1 for 1W was a Changeling. What if we did Mother of Runes again, but make her playable without being broken? What if our Convoke creature paid you off for convoking it? What if we made Chained to the Rocks actually good? These are all White cards, but that’s just because they’re what show up first on the list.
Tumblr media
So where does that leave us with the sequel? I have some pretty mixed feelings so far- on the one hand, the power is clearly there, the art is on point, but some of this feels like either a mistake or at least a misstep. Where MH1 was Time Spiral, I’m getting the feeling that MH2 is Planar Chaos- and I’m not just saying that because Storm is in Green now apparently.
Tumblr media
What we’ve seen so far is pretty clearly (to me, at least) an escalation of what MH1 was- where that set seemed largely to be experimenting with what they could do within the rules of the game, this set appears to be trying to find new ways to bend those rules *just a little bit* while still remaining somewhat inbounds. Carth puts the Loyalty Cost icon somewhere outside a Planeswalker for the first time ever, and the wording on his ability is somewhat confusing. Grist, the Hunger Tide, has one of the most interesting and potentially abusable lines of text I’ve seen in a while, and Garth One-Eye- I mean he speaks for himself. The effects on some of these cards feels reminiscent of the MYB Playtest cards- especially Garth- and while some of those were successfully integrated into the game, there’s a limit to how much of that silliness is healthy for the game.
Tumblr media
And if Garth reads like a Playtest card, the new showcase cards look like them. I actually really like how these look, but they come attached to one of the sets biggest problems, and one that’s kind of emblematic of MTG design for the past couple years since MH1- Complexity and Collectability Creep.
Modern Horizons 1 has 254 cards in boosters, that you can get either non-foil or foil if you’re lucky. Each pack has 10 commons (or 9 commons and one foil of any rarity), 3 uncommons, one full-art Snow Basic, one rare or mythic, and either a Token or an Art card. There are two cards with special promos- Flusterstorm, the Buy-A-Box, and Astral Drift, the prerelease promo. You can buy it either in a booster packs or in booster boxes. Relatively simple.
Tumblr media
For Modern Horizons 2, WoTC needed two separate articles to explain the various packs and promos, and people are still confused (to be fair fuck reading all that). There are 4 different special frames, and it’s incredibly unclear if they’ll be available in foil, or some even in nonfoil, or how you get each one, and apparently Etched foils are back again? What the actual fuck is going on here? Now, this is arguably not that huge a step up considering Strixhaven and its Mystical Archive, but it feels dwarfing compared to the last MH1. I liked the idea of Project Booster Fun at its outset, but at this point I think it’s clear that it’s gone too far.
Tumblr media
(that’s gotta be the most ironic card/art pairing in a while...)
And my biggest concern with MH2 is this. It isn’t that the set will be bad (though based on these current spoilers, if you don’t like Squirrels, you’re SOL), because the set designers know what they’re doing, much as magic players love to complain that they don’t. It’s the precedent the sheer complexity of the collection is setting, I guess. I do think it’s too early to tell whether the set is clearly a mistake or it’s going to be great with some rough patches, but don’t get me wrong- I’m pretty sure this is a polarizer.
Tumblr media
Fuck me it does have a Frog Samurai in it though, 10/10

Self Promo Meme
I was tagged by @skyholdherbalist @out-of-the-embers @lechatrouge673 & @idrelle-miocovani and I finally have the time to do it! W00t! Not tagging anybody else, because most of you have done it already.
Rules:  Post the first line of your last 10 published fics, then tag 10 people.
1. Drops of Satina - Dragon Age: Inquisition - Raphael Trevelyan/Hannah - WIP, 26,873 words
The thing about being a relatively young man leading a fairly active life meant that it took all of four days for Raphael to get bored of the prescribed bed rest.
2. A Million Reasons To Love - Dragon Age: Inquisition - Osric Cadash/Lace Harding - Complete, 13,066 words
Osric has never had to fight his way through what a felt like a crowd of demons before, and never had to do it while gasping for the thin mountain air, so when he and Lady Pentaghast arrived to a battle already in progress, he felt disoriented and grossly unprepared to fight.
3. Pure Intentions - Dragon Age Regency AU - Cullen Rutherford/Ellie Trevelyan - WIP, 3,176 words
With a stormy expression on his handsome face, Cullen stood on the deck of a passenger ship and glared at the gradually approaching docks of Kirkwall.
4. Dance Like No One Is Watching - Dragon Age Modern AU - Cullen Rutherford/Ellana Lavellan - WIP, 13,201 words
I want to see you again. I miss your smile.
Not for the first time Ellana wistfully thought about the old-timey phones, ones you could either slam down onto the receiver or flip closed with a snap. Pressing delete on her smartphone screen did not carry enough vehemence she felt the situation deserved.
5. Forging A New Path - Dragon Age 2 - Garrett Hawke/Rosalie Rutherford - WIP, 2,231 words
By the time Garrett Hawke saw the first indication they were approaching his destination, the sun was already below the horizon, tinting the sky with a haze of orange and yellow.
6. A Learning Curve - Dragon Age - Reader/Carver Hawke - One-shot, 1,188 words
Carver is big, grumpy, and somewhat young for your tastes, but when you accidentally find yourself face to face with him, you cannot help but notice his striking features.
7. Fade To Black - Dragon Age: Inquisition - Reader/Solas, One-shot - 1,276 words
When the Dread Wolf takes you at last, he does it in the Fade. You know it’s the Fade because it feels different than your regular dreams - and you’re naked, tied with a rope to a rock, and cannot see due to a blindfold.
8. Morning Bliss - Dragon Age: Inquisition - Cullen Rutherford/Lily Trevelyan - One-shot, 1,279 words
On the mornings when neither of them had to rush anywhere, Cullen always opened his eyes first, his years with the Templars ingrained deeper than any selfish desire to sleep in.
9. You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream - Dragon Age: Inquisition - Knight-Captain Rylen/Emma Trevelyan - One-shot, 4,551 words
The day had been long, hot and filled with preparations for the upcoming assault on Adamant Fortress, and Rylen was having a hard time falling asleep now that it was nighttime.
10. The Heart Of Everything - Dragon Age: Inquisition - Mahanon Lavellan/Josephine Montilyet - Complete, 12,414 words
“Yes or no, Sera,” Mahanon asked once more, his voice as level as he could manage it. “Did you purposefully spoil Josephine’s creams?”

On October 2, 2019, All Elite Wrestling will officially kick off the latest pro wrestling war. It’s yet to be said how much they will lean into their new weekly live television series being a “war” with Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment—a federation which has run professional wrestling in the United States since I was in kindergarten—but the upstart pro wrestling company has a number of factors that can put it ahead of the current pro wrestling landscape.
When AEW kicks off its run on TNT this fall, the landscape of professional wrestling could shift. Or it could just make things more fun. Or they could tank, although judging by the moves Cody and company have made leading up to its television debut, we don’t see a total failure on the horizon. If you want proof, here are some reasons why.
Wednesdays could be a fire night for pro wrestling
Monday nights are an institution for professional wrestling; the WWE has been occupying that night for decades, in a number of iterations (and channels). Their second brand, Smackdown, has hopped around; it currently airs on Tuesday nights, but will be making the jump back to Fridays when it debuts on Fox this fall (it’s also occupied Thursday nights for a time). Wednesdays are interesting altogether; it’s known as the night for NXT on the WWE Network, airing at 8PM ET. That crowd, who loves the more indie-minded brand, might be interested to hop over to TNT to catch a bigger production, indie-minded federation in AEW. And since NXT is on-demand, not catching it live at 8PM won’t be that much of a trip; they’d just watch a replay later that day.
Plus, with no other established pro wrestling on that day, AEW’s got a wide-open field when it comes to wrestling-related competition on television.
Cody is Dusty Rhodes’ son
Dusty Rhodes was not only one of the biggest pro wrestling stars of the 1980s, but he also helped book the NWA during his heyday, as well as the early ‘90s at times. He was so famous (infamous?) for his booking that the term “Dusty finish” was coined to describe Dusty’s tendency to have matches end where a winner’s hand was raised, only to be informed that due to something small, they lost. He’s a legend in the game and judging by how Cody cuts promos before matches, but for the old school “big match feel” of his modern-day bouts in AEW. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and with Cody settling into the role of star on-screen and creative mind behind the scenes, those Dusty influences should will help dictate the feel of the storylines and, more importantly, the tentpole matches and shows will make AEW a true force.
Wrestlers won’t have scripted promos
If you grew up in the era of The Rock, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and the other best talkers in the squared circle, you were treated to promos that were basically improv. Back in the day, pro wrestlers were given a few bullet points, then let their personalities turn them into entertaining speeches that would not only tell their opponents how they would be beating their ass, but letting fans know where, and how to see it. As WWE grew, they shied away from that aspect, making their superstars stick to scripts when it came time for cutting promos. Usually, this practice has lead to embarrassing segments, or stars sounding more wooden in the ring because they are much better when they aren’t memorizing lines. Moxley himself spoke about the ills of this practice, and rumors of guys like Kevin Owens being allowed to come up with their own material during promos is seen like the WWE is trusting in his performance.
In AEW, they have made it a point to say that they would be allowing their stars to cut unscripted promos. People like Chris Jericho and Cody will have a field day with this, as will MJF, who has become a true phenom on the mic.
Wins and losses will matter
One of the biggest problems many have with today’s WWE product is that it doesn’t usually matter who wins or loses; it’s a common occurrence for a title-holder to regularly lose to a challenger, only to then demolish them in a title defense. The “even Steven” booking of this era can be mind-numbing, as it’s hard to tell what the pecking order of the roster truly is. All Elite has made it a point to specify that wins and losses will matter and that the ranking of their talent roster will help determine who’s being given title shots.
The ramifications of this should be felt immediately; instead of just watching a match, waiting for high spots or moments to cheer, AEW’s going to foster a sense of unpredictability with their programs. If every win and loss matters, that can make most matches must-see television, keeping fans in suspense throughout a program. It’ll make AEW feel closer to real-life professional sports than any form of pro wrestling has been able to.
Tag team wrestling will be on full display
It shouldn’t be a surprise that tag team wrestling will be put on a pedastal in AEW; the world-renown Young Bucks are a part of the federation’s executive team. That said, it’s something that the WWE lacks; they have solid teams like The New Day, The Usos, The Revival, and others, but they have neglected their tag team divisions for long spells. On Day 1, AEW will be kicking off a tag team tournament that is set to eventually crown the first AEW Tag Team Champions. It’s something that’ll help differentiate their product from the WWE, and with teams like the Lucha Bros in competition, it will set a new standard in professional wrestling.
Access to talent
This is where things will get interesting. During the Monday Night Wars of the 1990s, one of the wildest games to play was seeing which stars would defect from the WWE to WCW (or vice versa, with some ECW thrown in the mix). The nWo storyline was initially based on WWF (at the time) stars returning to WCW to wreak havoc. While the amount of ship-jumping might not be that rampant (we’d assume the WWE has learned a lot from that war), the possibility of AEW’s pluses allowing pro wrestlers more freedom in a less-strenuous environment could be intriguing to WWE superstars who are up for contract renewal and just unhappy with the current product. This also translates to former WWE stars—Jim Ross currently has an active role in AEW, and guys like Bret Hart and Diamond Dallas Page have already made appearances on AEW-branded pay-per-views. Two of their biggest acquisitions, Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley, got their biggest looks in the WWE, and have quickly been pushed to the top of the AEW card.
With a few more key signings and surprises, AEW could continue to pull WWE fans over to see their favorites get to express themselves in a new environment.
The "fresh" factor
Ultimately, everything AEW does right now is newsworthy, for good or ill. Lucky for them, they are saying all of the right things for fans looking for an alternative to the WWE and making a number of interesting decisions. As you can see, they want to make their diversity known from the beginning, be it signing wrestlers from the LGBTQ+ community like Nyla Rose and Sonny Kiss or working with the OWE to bring more Chinese performers in front of an American audience. AEW is leaning into being different, and that's going to be successful for them...in the beginning. They are still learning, and are willing to amend the six month-to-one year's worth of storyline plans they have mapped out already.
It's up to Cody, the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and company to now execute on the tools they've laid out to achieve ultimate success.

Modern Horizons prerelease was very awesome! Went a respectable 2-2 with this fun Esper deck, which is the best I’ve ever done at an event (I’m learning!). Also splurged on a box, and got a ton of awesome pulls! More than made up for what I paid! In all, I got five Mythics (2x Echo of Eons, Morophon, Hexdrinker, and Seasoned Pyromancer), 5 of the new Canopy lands, and a foil Hall of Heliod’s Generosity ($$$$) and a foil Planebound Accomplice. In other fantastic news, I also got all the ninja cards I needed. Not to mention the promos, all the snow lands, and those very snazzy art cards. I am extremely happy!

4. My Type — SAINT MOTEL "When there's loving in the air, Don't fight it, just keep breathing, I can't help myself but stare, Double check for double meanings, I'm a man who's got very specific taste, You-you-you're just my type, Oh, you got a pulse and you are breathing."
5. Wishing Ain't No Sin — Billy Momo This song was used in promos for Better Call Saul. "i may know i'm good but i don't know what that's good for, I'm only waiting for the world to count me in meanwhile the rest of my life is waiting to begin, but i believe i've heard that wishing ain't no sin, so i keep wishing, wishing I could win."
6. Keep On — Portugal. The Man "But I'm seein' a pattern, Fallin' from a ladder, Must be trippin' like a cartoon, Slippin' on a banana. -- All day long, 'til we're dead and gone, Be a winner, All day long, 'til we're dead and gone, Grow up, be a winner."
7. Smoke on the Water — Deep Purple Jimmy/Saul likes this song as evidenced in Better Call Saul.
8. Pork Soda — Glass Animals Jimmy/Kim vibes. "I know I'm no sweet prince of love, Those times that we got drunk, Maybe Jamaica rum, Maybe some Johnny Dub, Maybe you still think of us, Phone buzz, and still I jump, Why don't I say it then? I want you all the time -- Why can’t we laugh now like we did then? How come I see you and ache instead? How come you only look pleased in bed? Let's climb the cliff edge and jump again."
9. Problems — Mother Mother "You and me, we're not the same, I am a sinner, you are a saint, When we get to the pearly gates, You'll get the green light, I'll get the old door in the face. Doo, doo, doo, I'm a loser, a disgrace, yeah, I've found love in the strangest place, Tied up and branded, locked in a cage, I say I'm gonna stage a great escape, Let loose and love all, But baby we're out of place."
10. Barracuda  — Heart A classic. "If the real thing don't do the trick, You better make up something quick, You gonna burn it out to the wick, Aren't you, Barracuda?"
11. New Person, Same Old Mistakes — Tame Impala "Finally taking flight, I know you don't think it's right, I know that you think it's fake, Maybe fake's what I like, On this side of the rut, I'm thinking like what, I'm thinking it's worth the fight, Soon to be out of sight, Moving it out this time, Going with what I always longed for, Feel like a brand new person, (But you make the same old mistakes)."
12. Bad Businessman — Squirrel Nut Zippers "There's a man going around town , Spreading lies, He's the bad businessman, Does his business while he can, He just does his business bad. He's a clown, Gonna get bounced around, If he don't keep his business underground, He's a player, And every time he deals a round, It's just a bad hand, What a bad man. Beware of what he sells, Surely go straight to hell. T' ain't no bottom in that wishing well."
13. Hollow Life — Coast Modern "It's hard to shake the feeling, These phonies make my blood run cold, That talk ain't got no meaning, The shallow end is growing old, It's getting hard to fake it, Pretending that I fit this scene, I'm fed up with the chasing, If I lead, would you follow me? Running, running, running from my problems, You'll be sitting pretty baby, hold on tight, Racing towards a dream on the horizon, Gimme something better than this Hollow life."
14. Rich Friends (Album Version) — Portugal. The Man "Let me be your one-man army, I'll campaign for anarchy, I been slippin' through the cracks, Like I was clothed in Vaseline, Let me be your little sunshine, In all this gloom and doom, I could really really really, Use a rich, rich friend like you."
15. I'm Your Villain — Franz Ferdinand "You toss in a word, And I'm your villain, I see the passion emerge, And I'm your villain. But serious, You're so serious, Oh, like a waiter, Hating the rich, But taking their tips."
16. DADDY (feat. CL of 2NE1) — PSY You cannot convince me Saul wouldn't unironically love PSY. Listen to all those puns. Also I’m awful and I’m not sorry.
17. MAGIC ARROW — TIMBER TIMBRE "Mystic palm, gem and tarot, A few escape your magic arrow, I saw you reel them in for miles, Each captivated crooked smile, And you know you can heal them all, Your double diamond disposition, Refractions of your center prism, Your magic arrow flies precision."
18. Dread In My Heart — Mother Mother "There's a devil in my brain with a pitchfork and a flame, Yeah, he likes to poke around and he likes to tell me things, And whenever I begin to feel like I might be deranged, I remember there's a little shitty devil in my brain, yeah. -- Oh, I wonder what it's like to, Be the type who doesn't burn, Yeah the kind who fights the good fight, Not the kind you find, Fisti-fucking-cuffing in the dirt."
19. Bad Boy Good Man — Tape Five You know he'd also love electroswing. "I'm a bad boy - I need to dance, If you don't dance, no romance, Feel like dancing, dance with me, First dance is always free."
20. Waiting Around to Die — The Be Good Tanyas "Sometimes I don't know where, This dirty road is taking me, Sometimes I can't even see the reason why, I guess I keep a-gamblin', Lots of booze and lots of ramblin', It's easier than just waitin' around to die."

DESCRIPTION
Italia DLC expands Euro Truck Simulator 2 with SCS Software’s rendition of the beautiful European country Italy with its rich history, modern industry, traditional architecture, and diverse natural environments.
Experience the typical features of Italy from behind the wheel. Explore roads leading through the Apennines, where tunnels and bridges alternate with scenic vistas and curvy segments, opening the view to distant horizons. Descend from the height of mountain passes to the shores of the seas, travel from manicured farmland to wilder and more arid places.
The geography and shape of Italy have led to a comparatively high concentration of cities in the Italia map expansion. Local industries contain, among others, famous places like Carrara marble quarries and Europe‘s largest Steelworks in Taranto.

best (?) of magic in 2021
Welcome to the final week of the year. Ish. Technically that started a couple days ago, but yknow.
As it’s the end of the year, I’m going to be committing to that thing every Content Creator decides to do, apparently, and that is: write a bunch of top/bottom-tier lists. It’s a tradition, right?
Tumblr media
It’s also Monday, and that’s usually the day I set aside for talking about everybody’s favourite money pit, Magic the Gathering. So I guess this is the top…Magic? Of this year?
…how much Magic came out this year again?
Tumblr media
Oh.
Just so we’re on the same page, here is a full list of everything Magic that came out this year.
>5 Standard-Legal sets- Kaldheim, Strixhaven, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Midnight Hunt, and Crimson Vow
>2 Supplemental sets- Time Spiral Remastered and Modern Horizons 2
>Various fancy versions of cards and reprints associated with those sets- the Strixhaven Mystical Archive, the Retro Frame cards from TSR/MH2, etc.
>17 new Preconstructed Commander decks, all associated with the aforementioned Standard-legal sets (excluding the Secret Lair one)
>4 Arena-Only sets- two Historic Anthologies, Jumpstart: Historic Horizons, and the first load of Alchemy cards
>A reprint of Mystery Booster: Convention Edition (but not exclusive to conventions)
>Various Promos (Judge promos, WPN promos, Love Your LGS, etc.)
That is a lot of Magic. According to Scryfall, there were a total of 1,919 new cards released this year- that’s 8.3% of the game’s 22897 cards across 3.5% of its time in existence. Probably less time than that, actually, but to compare, there were 1,231 new cards in 2020 and 1,205 in 2019. The year I started playing, 2013, had 755 brand-new cards, for reference- that’s less than 40% as much as this year. And that doesn’t include reprints.
I don’t have any idea how I could possibly rank them. I can’t really even grade each set accurately, because I haven’t really had the chance to play with half of them. I used to go to FNM every week at a minimum, but I’ve not drafted…any set this year, I think. I did a casual MH2 Sealed event for a mate’s birthday, but that’s the only non-cube limited I’ve done.
In short, despite spending ages talking about Magic this year, I’m really not qualified to talk about what its highlights were this year.
So I’m instead going to go through things in the formats I did play- specifically, what cards I liked for Commander and Cube. And because combing through almost 2000 cards is hard, I’m just going to be looking at the actual commanders, and the cards that I added to my cube that are from this year.
So it’s going to be a little bit biased. Gonna stress that these are my favourite cards, not necessarily the best ones. Go to ChannelFireball or something for those.
Commander
This list I think is going to end up being weaker than the Cube one. I mean, at the end of the day, there was no Commander this year that I dedicated time into building a real deck around- can’t say the same about 2020.
It’s also going to be a bit of a weirder list, because I definitely approach this format a bit more differently than most people. I think that’s best evidenced by the fact that my one Commander from last year was Callaphe of all things.
Egh, fuck it. I can’t order these. Honest truth- I’m actually writing this section second, and I’m tired at this point. Here’s a few words on like like every card I was thinking of when I went through everything.
Adeline, Resplendent Cathar: This actually almost made the list for Cube as well. This card, in my eyes, proves that two things are possible- one, that Mono-White is definitely still good enough (and y’all are just mean), and two, that Aggro is definitely still good enough (and y’all are just mean). I really like her, she goes tall and wide simultaneously, and she demonstrates that White’s problems don’t necessarily need “solving”. Though they probably should do that still.
Minn, Wily Illusionist: I have actually designed a deck around this one, and god, it was a lot of fun. This card is just so genuinely interesting that I’ve thought about taking Callaphe apart and replacing it with Minn. It was just, the moment I realised that this card can ramp you. It doesn’t say nonland, you can just drop lands when your illusions hit the dirt. That was huge.
Ebondeath, Dracolich: Believe it or not, I actually struggled to make picks for my favourite colour combinations this year. It wasn’t actually a great year for Mono-Black, all things considering? At the very least, the cards we got didn’t really pique my interest super much. Ebondeath did, though, so there’s that.
Gisa, Glorious Resurrector: She just looks like she’s having such a good time.
Yedora, Grave Gardener: I’ve always been a fan of checking the “secondary” Commanders present in precons, because there’s always some really whacky designs. Yedora is one of these- it’s a mono-Green Aristocrats-esque card that also happens to have insane synergy with Morph, one of my favourite mechanics. You can go infinite with fucking Temur Charger, how sick is that?
Toski, Bearer of Secrets and Chatterfang, Squirrel General: I’m lumping these together because I’m just happy they’re there. Good for MaRo. Finally got Squirrel Tribal out of the Un-Set hell it’s been in since its brief escape in Odyssey block. Now to just reprint all those cards, and also remove the reserved list so we can get Deranged Hermit back.
Dennick, Pious Apprentice / Dennick, Pious Apparition: Something about this guy just wriggled its way into my brain and I cannot get him out. I have to figure this deck out and then build it. I don’t know why, but I gotta. I’m thinking, like, Looter tribal? Maybe? The only thing I’ve really got is the deck’s name, Kill This Man, because somebody kill my commander so I can use it properly.
Vega, the Watcher: On the flipside, this is just ludicrously simple and clean, but great as a result. I really enjoy uncommon commanders sometimes- when they’re basic and open or niche but powerful. It’s a fine line- I mean, look at most of the ones from AFR, they’re kinda garbo- but some of them really get to shine.
Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth: Iunno man this one’s just cool. Investigate is a great mechanic, would love to see it more often.
Kardur, Doomscourge: Kardur was very much a card that told me that Rakdos was back, and back to being interesting. Of course Goad and its similar effects should be BR, it works perfectly. And then it kind of got completely overshadowed by Karazakar and Prosper and the like, but still. It’s cool.
Halana and Alena, Partners: Look, I’m just happy they got to stick around. Always loved these characters, was great to see them in Commander Legends, greater to see them in an actual Innistrad set.
Tovolar, Dire Overlord / Tovolar, the Midnight Scourge: This is kind of a dishonourable mention, actually. It frustrates me so deeply that, instead of getting a bunch of cool an interesting Werewolf commanders that do a bunch of different takes on how the deck should work, like what the Vampires got in Crimson Vow, we got exactly one. And he’s so incredibly nuts that it makes no sense to run anything else. Fuck, man, I don’t want this for this tribe.
Genuinely, though, I know that Werewolves are a problematic design space because of their complexity, but you know what you could have done? Added a fucking WOLF legend that buffs Werewolves too? Considering every Werewolf in the set also cares about Wolves? Come on, man.
(Side-note: I’d also like to give a dishonourable mention to Tergrid, God of Fright, for completely overshadowing every other Mono-B deck this year and also making a lot of people very very miserable)
Grist, the Hunger Tide: I just like that this guy’s a secret extra Planeswalker Commander. And also, Insect tribal! I think I’d still run Xira Arien, but that’s just me.
General Ferrous Rokiric: As much as I dislike every card with 3+ colours being fucking insane and there’s not enough mono/two-coloured decks in the format, I do actually like encouraging playing multicoloured cards. I really like the idea of a deck where all those Shadowmoor/Eventide cards are really good. I dunno. I’m still tossing up what I want to do for bonus extra Boros deck, but this guy is on the table.
Odric, Blood-Cursed: Fuck you this guy’s neato you’re just mean.
Quintorius, Field Historian: I feel like I was too harsh on this guy the first time. He’s a neat little guy, does interesting things, and it encourages you to lean into some of Boros’s better card advantage options. Did he really have to be 5 mana, though?
 Cube
Okay this one gets to be an actual ordered list.
Honorable Mention: Tourach, Dread Cantor
Tumblr media
I’m not going to act like this card is incredible. Hell, it’s probably not even that good. It’s a 2 mana 2/1 with limited upside, or it’s a very hard-to-cast 4 mana 4/3 with insane upside. I guess maybe I should put this guy in my 4s section, huh?
But I’m just a sucker for Hymn to Tourach. I’m fully aware of how painful it is to get hit with it- hell, I think I might have been targeted by this spell in Cube more that I’ve gotten to play it. But it’s just so sick. I’m glad I get to have Black discard effects in my cube, because they’re something I just really enjoy playing with- and it might be a bit of a feel bad to play against them sometimes, but hey. Just draft Black yourself next time, and show them how you feel about it.
The card’s called Despise for a reason. I mean, I don’t play that one anymore (it’s not good!), but still.
#5: Smoldering Egg / Ashmouth Dragon
Tumblr media
The keen-eyed among people who actually look at my cube may notice a suspicious Thing in the Ice-shaped hole in my Blue section. But why, Rad, why are you not playing that classic banger? Aren’t you trying to support Blue-based control decks? Aren’t you supporting a Blue/Red spellslinger deck? Whatever gives? Why not Horror Guy?
Thing in the Ice is a card I have a bit of history with. I played an aggro deck in Standard at the time, played SOI draft weekly (it might be my favourite format), and as such have sat across the table from the thing plenty of times. It has not given me a good impression. It’s a very good card, but not one I like, and I want to keep only cards I actually enjoy in my cube if I can get away with it.
Smoldering Egg, therefore, is a very convenient alternative. It does a lot of the same things, but rather than resetting the game when it transforms, it instead acts as a turning point for the deck’s plan, letting it pivot aggressive while still blowing through things in the process. It’s a bit more playable in tempo-ier decks, but it also encourages playing some of the more expensive spells available- hell, I’d consider playing this in Mono-Red if I had Fireblast. Dig Through Time flips it immediately!
In short, I love this card, and I don’t love Thing in the Ice. Besides, it’s like a quarter of the price.
 #4: Timeless Dragon
Tumblr media
As a heads up, every other card on this list fits a pattern. That is, there’s two Green and two White cards, and they’re from Midnight Hunt and Modern Horizons 2. I said I was biased.
With that in mind, I feel like I’m going crazy when I don’t see this card in many cubes. It’s in less than 5% of cubes total, and that just feels so low to me considering how versatile this thing is.
This card effectively has two modes. The first is an instant-speed 2 mana draw 2 in White, as long as you know that one card is always a land and the other is always a 4 mana 4/4 flyer, which is pretty fine. That doesn’t sound that good later in the game, but fortunately, the other mode of a 5 mana 5/5 flyer that draws you a 4 mana 4/4 flyer on death looks pretty good there. This card is just a versatile value house- this isn’t even getting into its synergies with mill or strength against discard effects.
It’s definitely not the splashiest thing in the world, but honestly, it doesn’t have to be. Sometimes, a big idiot dragon is good enough, and this one happens to be two of those.
 #3: Timeless Witness
Tumblr media
Man, maybe I just like Eternalize. But no, this is actually here for a very specific reason.
When I was looking into redoing my Cube up a bit, I was kind of in a rut. I’d added the green Demigod, Renata, to my list on seeing it in some other ones- only to realise it was in those because it’s a Persist combo enabler (which isn’t a thing in my list) that’s a bit more playable outside of that context. And I kinda forgot what I had cut for Renata- but also, wanted my new card to support some of the synergies I was going for in my Green section.
Then this thing came along. Boom, it’s a Human for GW decks. Boom, it’s a graveyard card for GB decks. Boom, it’s just kind of really good value. I didn’t have Eternal Witness in at the time, but now that I do have that card (and am seeking a non-Terese Nielsen version, thanks asshat), I’m still keeping the Timeless one in. It’s obviously weaker on account of being more mana, but I’ve just grown attached to it.
 #2: Cathar Commando
Tumblr media
Whenever WoTC ends spoiler season by just unceremoniously dumping the last of the cards upon the people all at once, there’s often a card or two hiding in the pile of draft commons and uncommons (and like one rare they knew people won’t care about) that are actually worth the interest. For Crimson Vow, that was Ancestral Anger- the secret extra Zada draw effect they tried to throw me off of by giving it text that doesn’t work in Commander (also Reckless Impulse). For Modern Horizons 2, that was Unholy Heat (kind of the best burn spell in years?) and Goblin Anarchomancer. And for Midnight Hunt, that was Cathar Commando. And probably some other stuff too.
This card is just so simple, and yet somehow of the 30-odd White 3/1s for 2, it has managed to skyrocket right near the top. I guess it has to be simple- it’s a common from a regular standard set, but still. I’d argue this thing is more playable than the Mythic Rare 1W 3/1 from the very same set, Intrepid Adversary- and that’s something you just don’t see in modern sets. Commons aren’t supposed to be allowed to do that these days, but here we are.
For the record, it’s technically the only 3/1 for 2 I’m running- only because Adanto Vanguard, the utterly absurd beast that it is, is acshually a 1/1. But I think that says a lot about how much I think about this card.
 #1: Tovolar’s Huntmaster / Tovolar’s Packleader
Tumblr media
Grave Titan is a card with a long, long history of terror in Cube. Released as part of a cycle of 5, each of settling into their own homes. Sun Titan is an EDH Menace, Primetime decimates Modern whenever it hits the field. Inferno Titan lives in Cube as well, but has never been quite as good and is much more replacable. Frost Titan is also there…hey, I’m still running it. But nothing can really step to the old Grave Daddy in Cube as far as 6-drops go.
And the thing is, that’s embarrassing for Green. For the undeniable best 6-mana card to be Black? For the colour that’s about getting to the big good stuff to be outdone in its optimal peak? For the ramp deck to have to splash another colour to get something as game-ending as the big man himself? For shame.
And lo, finally, we received it. The Green Grave Titan. Is it as good? Not quite, obviously. But is it good enough? Absolutely.
anyway thats it im goin bed buh-bye hopefully when i wake up there’ll be a neon kamigawa w/e spoiler that’s a samurai and not a ninja still a little miffed about the new umezawa anyway

Celebration Peculiar People Day January 10, 2021
Tumblr media
Peculiar People Day is here to celebrate the leaders of the strange and unusual, those who refuse to succumb to the world 19s idea of what is normal and sane. They challenge the status quo and utterly rebuke the concept that that which is out of the ordinary is bad. Whether they simply dress in their own style, or have very clear ideas of what is right and normal, Peculiar People Day is their opportunity to shine.
History of Peculiar People Day
Contrary to what you might think, it has never been the normal people who have set the world in motion. Whenever there has come sweeping change, it has always been at the hands of someone who refuses to accept things as they are, they challenge established ideas and overturn conventions that are sometimes thousands of years old. They seek the horizon of every field to determine what 19s there, and bring joy to life by breaking out of the concepts that define 18a normal and healthy life 19.
The people Peculiar People Day was designed to celebrate are those who are just a little out of sync with everyone else. Maybe they have a particularly strange style of speaking, or an antiquated style of dress, maybe they live a modern life like they 19re part of an era ages past. They could be cosplayers or part of the Steampunk Fandom, maybe they play unusual instruments or practice an odd religion (Pastafarianism anyone?). Whatever the case, Peculiar People Day was made for them.
How to celebrate Peculiar People Day
There are two great ways to celebrate Peculiar People day, starting with celebrating those in your life who are already strange and unusual. If you have that friend who always adds a little spice to your life, and makes sure that even the most normal of events is somewhat surreal and off-beat, then Peculiar People Day is your opportunity to give them the recognition and appreciation they deserve.
Peculiar People Day is also your chance to let your freak flag fly if you 19re one of the peculiar ones. Don 19t let anyone else tell you what is appropriate and normal, get out there and shake up the world with your amazing and unique personality. Remember, it 19s always the peculiar ones who change the world, in ways subtle to overarching, so get out there on Peculiar People Day and let them see your inner oddball!

War of the Spark Reprints & New Art
I can’t believe we’re already on the brink of Core Set 2020 previews! Before we go there, I”ll wrap up my thoughts on War of the Spark. Today, some reprints & the new art that accompanies them. This is always one of my favorite things, to see how staple cards are reinterpreted in new contexts.
Tumblr media
Starting with a bang, so to speak, is this redo of limited staple Gateway Plaza. To me, this was an ingenious design on the part of the creative team. By giving us identical art two sets in a row in Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance, they created a sense of constancy, of permanence on this world. Blowing it up was the most evocative way to start this war, and to make clear the sudden and violent change the plane is to experience. In a set that was somewhat hit or miss on the “war” tone, this was one story moment that was perfectly executed.
Sung Choi has a fairly small pool of Magic art so far, but all of it is excellent. His work first caught my eye with the fantastic Molten Rain reprint in Modern Masters 2017, and recently blew it out of the water with the Ultimate Masters Life from the Loam. This Gateway Plaza does a phenomenal job of conveying this powerful story moment, and is a highlight of the set.

Ajani’s Pridemate has been a staple since it was first printed in Magic 2011, and it’s great to see it back here as Ajani’s signature spell, errata and all. The existing version by Svetlin Velinov has been the only version til now, so it’s exciting to see a change.
Sidharth Chaturvedi got 4 cards in War of the Spark, and for good reason. The set has a very animated, comic book style about it, and Sidharth’s style is a perfect fit. He tends towards this illustration-esque feel, with stark but narrow color palettes (basically just blue & yellow here), and a sense of visible brushstrokes. It fits in beautifully with the feel of the set. My only wish is that the setting were a little more visible, putting this in the context of Ravnica, as he did on Pouncing Lynx.

Augur is another staple from core sets of yore, and a fantastic reprint for Standard, though I wish we had more context for this character. Who is this merfolk defecting to Bolas, and why? But that’s neither here nor there.
What I love about this depiction is it really conveys the sense of this creature being an oracle or seer of sorts, where the existing artwork is more generic. The water in particular is done amazingly here, conveying the motion surrounding the character while still giving us a perfectly clear view. The colors are beautiful, and the details are precise but not overwhelming. Alex Konstad is excellent, and I love the piece. I’d check out his Coral Commando & promo of Deeproot Champion as examples why it made perfect sense for him to get this commission.

Another signature spell that made perfect sense to bring back. As much as I love the original version of this, charging at the viewer, this one is simply phenomenal, and I’m so happy they had Aleksi Briclot do it. He’s done a huge number of Magic cards, going back to the Kamigawa days, and often gets major commissions, including all five of the original Lorwyn Planeswalkers. He does Chandra and fire so phenomenally well. Just look at Stigma Lasher and Ravaging Blaze for a sense of what he can do with fire. And, of course, the original Chandra Nalaar is beyond iconic.
This piece, a Common whose art will often go unnoticed by drafters, shows just how incredible the quality of Magic art is.

This is one of those spells I always feel like has been around since... I dunno... Tempest or something. But it’s actually only the second time it’s been printed since its debut in Khans of Tarkir. Obviously, the dream is to draft it in the same deck as Feather, the Redeemed, but I’m not sure how often that is actually going to happen. Either way, it’s a fun cantrip & utility trick for Limited.
Gabor Szikszai is great at these action shots, frequently illustrating for the Boros or other combat-oriented individuals. His pieces are full of energy, and always feel like the very apex of the moment, like the shots you’d see on a storyboard or in a comic. This style is a perfect fit for War of the Spark, and this piece does a great job.

Demolish, on the other hand, has been around for a long time, going back to Odyssey, and it still shows up as a perpetual inclusion. It’s always not good enough for standard, and most of the time it’s not really playable in Limited either. That said, it’s the kind of effect that needs to be around, just to serve as a baseline. Probably its best inclusion, from a Mel perspective, was in Kaladesh, where artifact removal was maindeckable, yet the rate made this far from overpowered.
As for the art, this may be my favorite iteration ever, since it’s possibly the only version ever to actually depict destroying both an artifact and a land, whereas most versions are more typical artifact destruction designs. This also goes deeper, as the building being destroyed is the Interplanar Beacon, first hinted at on Steam Vents in Guilds of Ravnica. The fact that they went to so much effort to seed these important story moments for War of the Spark is above and beyond awesome, and I’d love to see more of this in the future.
Adam Paquette needs no introduction–he’s Magic art royalty at this point. But I would like to point out that he did a huge number of lands for this year on Ravnica, including the aforementioned Interplanar Beacon, another of my favorite pieces from the set, and several of the evocative basic lands. It’s amazing to get to see so many different angles of the same buildings & locations, and was one of the highlights of this incredible year in Magic.

Awwww look at the goodest boy! Mowu is here serving good boy realness, and I’m all about it. I love that they were able to print this spell and use it effectively as a signature spell to demonstrate Jiang Yanggu’s magic. I’m always a little surprised to see this spell reprinting, since it feels like Wizards is perpetually unsure if this is too powerful or not, toying with making this effect cost 2 mana or making it slightly less of a buff for 1. Either way, I’m happy to see it back. Obviously, this card goes back to the genesis of the game, and is one of the only iconic spells from that era that would still be printable these days.
I didn’t immediately recognize Dmitry Burmak’s name on this card, but one cursory glance at his card history and I immediately recognized a number of his pieces. His first Magic pieces were from Unstable, including two of my favorites: Lobe Lobber & Willing Test Subject. On Ravnica, he’s done a bunch of pieces for the Rakdos & Izzet, including Captive Audience, Electrodominance, and Light up the Stage. His pieces have tremendous energy and more than a dash of whimsy, and I am here for it. I’d love to see more of this energy in Magic art going forward.

From the very old to the much more recent, New Horizons is one of the increasing number of land ramp enchantments Wizards has been pushing in recent years as an alternative to land fetching. To be clear, these effects have been around for a while, but they’re much more frequent than they used to be, and land fetching doesn’t show up quite as often. It’s a cool effect, and I do like it. I just hope they keep land fetching as well, since both effects are useful in different ways.
Eytan Zana is a name that may not be super familiar, but you’ve definitely seen a ton of his works, and that’s because the vast majority of his Magic artworks are lands. One of my favorite Forests of all time is his, the idyllic deer & stream Forest from Avacyn Restored. It’s his mastery of landscapes that makes this New Horizons art so good. For all intents and purposes, it is a land art, just themed on a spell. I love the subtle ruins of the city in the foreground, and the majesty of the great trees growing out of the main structure are absolutely breathtaking. Well done.

Ahhh, Primordial Wurm. Herein lies the proof of just how pushed creatures are these days. Back in Alpha, this casting cost got you a 6/4 Craw Wurm. Now it either gets you a 7/6 Primordial Wurm, and it’s still basically unplayable. I look forward to ten years from now, when we get a 10/10 Wurm for this exact casting cost at Common, and it still doesn’t see play.
Anyhoo, this is a fun piece. Svetlin Velinov is another piece of Magic art royalty, who needs absolutely no introduction. What I love about him is the vast array of types of cards he does. Sometimes it’s a high-profile Mythic Legend like Roalesk, Apex Hybrid. Sometimes it’s a goofy limited trick like Maximize Velocity (with goofy Viashino to match). And sometimes it’s an absolutely gorgeous land. But no matter what, his style shows through and makes something totally memorable. I’ll remember this Wurm chasing down bite-sized eternals, even if I forget if it’s a 7/6 or a 6/6 or a 6/4 or whatever the hell size Wurms are these days.

One only need look at the original version of this art by Karl Kopinski to get a sense of the art direction for this set. What was once a somber, pensive piece is now action, in full comic book mode. And I’m totally here for it. I do love how the Nicol Bolas statue was used as a prop in this set.
Obviously Daarken is a legend. Suffice it to say, he’s done everything, but definitely has a talent for darker, more sinister pieces (and occasionally, the exact opposite). This piece is great, though I will say I don’t quite understand the Nahiri quote on here. I would really have rather seen a Sorin quote here and had them use this one on Nahiri’s Stoneblades. But what do I know?

Last but not least, it’s Totally Lost, everyone’s favorite card they wish cost 1 mana less, but couldn’t really without being a little too powerful. Honestly, I love that they brought back Fblthp for this, though if they do it a third time, then they’ll never be able to do a version of this card without him ever. Think about that carefully, Wizards. Probably my favorite thing about this card isn’t even Fblthp on top of the Bolas statue, but actually the flavor text reference to his Easter Egg in Captive Audience from the last set. They really went deep this time around.
Aaron Miller does a huge variety of cards, from high profile works like Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, to cards you probably already forgot existed, like Honed Khopesh. He seems to really enjoy these interesting perspectives, looking up or down at his characters from unique vantage points, and creating stylized pieces that have character, but still fit into the Magic universe. I enjoy that this card made it into the set, and I think this depiction of one of the game’s favorite memes, high over the spires of the city, is a perfect place to close out this post.
