My least favourite type of internet person is the person who claims fanfic is over thousands of years old or whatever. I understand we like to joke but fanfiction is fundamentally tied to fandom culture and is a very specific way of engaging with media. Religious texts based off other religious texts is not fanfiction and it is worrying the only way you can justify your interest is by comparing the two. I promise you you don't have to reinvent the wheel to write fanfic you can just do that but we don't have to say "Shakespeare wrote fanfiction about Richard III", there was not a Richard III fandom in 1592, that was called the divine right of kings.

“Nooooooooooo! I wanna cuddle! And I’m too tired! I worked so hard today!” You stated as you tightened your arms around him

“Okay, okay I give up” he sighed as he relented. The two of you slowly settled on the ground in the deserted city where you were hunting demons. After deciding to camp there, you both set up all the necessary supplies for the night. You enjoyed some snacks while stargazing and cuddling.

But also uses like, 200+ years of slang in the same sentence. He picked a bunch up from the ghosts at the club, he has the stuff from his own decade, and he keeps up with the times.

jokingly calling the divine comedy a fanfic is funny, but people seriously believing it (or stuff like the aeneid) is fanfic makes my brain hurt. there is a world of difference between the divine comedy and fanfiction, they are not comparable in any way. and i say that as someone who writes fanfic.

most fanfics can never be published because they deal with copyrighted material written under a capitalistic hellscape and must follow the laws about it. the divine comedy is using aspects that had influenced western culture for millenia to tell a serious story about the corruption and flaws dante saw in italy and religion. not to mention that religion and greek mythology weren't fandoms back then.
