i am fascinated and also very much a minor instigator on the internet. tell me more abt windlifter's comical but functional divorce situation

i was going to make a series of headcanons on dad!windlifter that vaguely exist in my head so i may as well lump that in with this instead of making two separate posts. nobody here has names because really they're very half-baked barely-existent ocs that i haven't had the time or motivation to get to so the fandom can do with these ideas however they please. this really became a huge tangent from your initial ask because i didn't feel like googling divorce laws so some of this might change later, BUT:

Windlifter married his best friend about a year after they graduated high school, because they were young and a little bit silly- it was a rush. I don't have a name for her yet, we will cross that bridge if we come to it, but they were polar opposites that contrasted perfectly. She was a goofball and a bit of a loose cannon and convinced him to be a little more outgoing, and he helped ground her when she was a little bit too worked up. They bantered a lot. It was incredibly entertaining to watch. They could sit anywhere and start wisecracking just about anything. They could have been a dual comedy act. Windlifter took up lumber jacking.

Surprise! Children exist. They end up having three- two of which are twins. With the same level of wise-assery as their parents. They start dishing out the child equivalent of sick burns by the time they each hit four years old. Mom goes back to school once the twins are in first grade and works on her bachelor's in pre-law.

Windlifter loves his kids So Much, you guys. Initially, he was scared that he wouldn't be able to connect with them, because it's not like he's not aware that he's not exactly the most expressive guy in the world. He had been relatively at peace with his quirks and sense of self until he became a father. Now he's overthinking everything. His wife reassures him that he's perfect the way he is, he's going to do great.

And he does do great. His kids never ever found him unapproachable despite his stoic nature and he engaged with them a lot in his own way. He'd play music for or sing to them every night and they never got too old or too big to huddle up next to him. Redbone's Beaded Dreams Through Turquoise Eyes was usually the album of choice for bedtime. He is also responsible for the children's fascination with AC/DC as toddlers. He's not a smiler, but the love in his eyes when he looked at them was more than palpable.

He's not a helicopter parent. Well. He is. But he's not a helicopter parent. Overprotective? Whatever. He's more lenient than his wife is on a lot of things. This is because of his Inexplicable Ability to Manifest right behind them when they're getting up to something they Shouldn't Be. He knows their patterns too well.

When they got older, though, he'd let them go about whatever stupid thing they wanted to try if he felt that it was a lesson they needed to learn. He had more of a "this is how you learn how to get Out of trouble" philosophy than trying to keep them from getting into any trouble at all. He'd always be there to rescue them if things got too rough- he never wanted them to be scared of asking for his help, because he struggled with asking his parents, and it got him into a lot of sticky situations as a kid.

Problem! While Windlifter is Very Much So A Wife Guy through his deadpan and remains Very Much So In Love, his wife gets to play a fun game I like to call: Crisis After Already Being Married: it's not that she doesn't love him, but she's not in love with him. The idea of being married to her best friend seemed so fun at first. She takes her concerns to one of her girl friends, a mutual friend of hers and her husband's. A friend who has been quietly pining for years, but that's neither here nor there.

She's burying her mini crisis to keep things Sane. It's just a series of her acting increasingly strange and peculiar to avoid the subject. She's Just Fine, what do you mean? She has A Job and Can't Think About That Right Now. Honey, I'm fine, just tired!

Windlifter has few deep relationships at this point because most people back in school found him a little off putting and he's a bit of an introvert, but he's learned to read the few people he knows closely incredibly well. He takes some time to put together clues and talks to his dad too before proposing any ideas because he hates to see someone he cares about suffering.

Windlifter's dad is the person that ingrained clear and direct communication with a loved one in his head growing up. (His mother is the person that his penchant for subtle mischief and mayhem and mind games came from, but that's neither here nor there).

So, he starts a conversation.

"Honey, I think you're a lesbian."

Great thing to say early in the morning before either of you have had enough coffee. But it's enough to get her out of the funk.

So then it becomes a series of "what's the best way to avoid traumatizing our kids or whatever." They go back and forth on whether it would be better to stay together or split, and the stress and tensions do get higher and the little things they had tolerated while living together begin to grate more while they're sorting it out. They realize this and settle on splitting. Cool.

No-fault divorce is probably a thing at this point in time but I'm lazy and I don't feel like doing all the logistics of that because Every State Is Different. Court takes long regardless and it's Ass. Ironically it becomes a bonding experience to complain about the court system and how fucking long it's taking for something that they mutually want.

Co-parenting ends up being more fun than being married. They did their best not to let the process or the other busy parts of their lives get in the way of supporting their kids. They get together for events and birthdays and each other's respective family gatherings. Not much changed besides split custody and legal status. Again, they should have gone into comedy together.

Windlifter gets kind of disillusioned with the lumber industry when the kids reach their teens and it gets him into a funk. He's a little depressed and probably has his first real argument with his eldest over something during this stage of his life and it stings. He calls up his ex-wife-still-bestie and they talk it out for a few hours, and she suggests a career change.

A nasty wildfire had been on the news recently and it had destroyed a lot of trees, and that's when Windlifter decides to work towards becoming an aerial firefighter. Windlifter's voice actor, Wes Studi, says in this interview that Windlifter went from destroying nature to helping it. The timeline might be a little different in a human AU depending on whether you think he has his chopper license or not, but he could always have gone into helicopter lumber operations or something. Shrug. I'm not doing math and timelines right now. He settles into the career for good once all the kids are in college.

I'm 90% sure that he ends up being the best man at his ex-wife's gay wedding to their friend later on. They're good pals. She toasts him at the wedding and goes around the party introducing him to people as her ex-husband and her actual wife as her ex-girlfriend. The three of them find it exceedingly hysterical.

The first time Windlifter nonchalantly mentioned that his "ex-wife" would be visiting Piston Peak and paying a visit to the base, everyone kiiind of assumed the worst.

A "YOU'RE DIVORCED?!" from Avalanche.

"Oh my gosh Wind, how are you feeling about that?" from Dipper.

Drip, Pinecone, and Blackout were debating on how they'd Get Her. Maru, Dynamite, Blade, and Cabbie did not debate it out loud.

"I'm feeling fine. We're friends." from Windlifter.

Chorus of "OHH, OKAY." Maru laughs and slugs him.

Windlifter proceeds to introduce the team to his ex-wife by describing all the insane schemes that the Smokejumpers (and everyone else...) had for her because they thought she broke his heart in some awful way or whatever. She gives them a death glare. Then she starts laughing her ass off. She actually gets along pretty well with everyone. Also embodies the energy of the "I know what you are" dog meme.

He ends the day with "wait until you meet our children."

"YOU HAVE KIDS!?"

By the time PFAR happens, he's a grandfather. He spends most of the year at PPAA, but his family does visit every so often and the team gets to experience the whiplash of "WINDLIFTER IS A GRANDPA???!" The kids like to harass Blade. Possibly at Windlifter's encouragement... he sends them in to mess with Maru too and feigns complete innocence. Windlifter is close enough with PPAA that everyone is just extended family to his kids and grandkids. Blade and Maru are jokingly called "bonus dads" by his adult kids, so take that as you will. Blade begrudgingly allows it. Maru thinks it's funny as hell.

The Smokejumpers definitely try to play up into and outdo each other in the roles of "cool aunt/uncle" for the grandkids. Windlifter likes to sit back and watch it unfold.

The "suddenly appear behind someone when they're getting up to mischief" never left after Windlifter's kids grew up. It just carried on to when the Smokejumpers were plotting hijinks. At PPAA, though, he's more inclined to get involved with the hijinks himself.

I think at least one of his kids grew up to be a park ranger at a park some other than Piston Peak. Maybe Death Valley. It'd be fun for them to keep him updated on how much Cad Spinner is suffering post-PFAR. Cathartic, maybe.

They never stop being his babies.
