After this tournament ends, will there be a second season of it? Or will you run a new tournament? Or is it more of a one and done deal?

We got a question like this that we answered back on August 5th.

I do think the answer might have changed a little bit since then; Mod M has had to mostly drop out of helping due to other commitments, and Mod Salix is getting super burnt out from trying to keep track of everything AND juggle real life, so neither of us could really help with a second one.

if we were to run another one (which is unlikely, but there is a possibility), it would be much smaller than this bracket. the thing is, this poll has been massive. it's been long. it's still going. things are in the air, so what i can tell you is that there's a very high chance it's not happening again. there's a lot of hypotheticals that i'm not going to get into here, but suffice to say if there is another one that it'll be smaller than this bracket is.

Mod Cal would also like to say something about this bracket as a whole, since we've been getting (and hoarding) a lot of asks thanking us for hosting this tournament;

this bracket has been astounding to see all the people being introduced to pieces of art they've never seen before in their lives. we read all the notes, and there have been so many of people saying that they'll never be the same again, or how they rushed to save a piece of art to their phone, or people sharing just how much a single piece of art can change a life.

i think that, in a way, this bracket is almost a form of art itself. it's a public piece, contributed by hundreds of different online users. it's a collage of our experiences and our joy and our grief and our anger and all those emotions you could never define. this bracket was made to push the boundaries of art, and i'm glad that some people have felt that they now have a new perspective on it.

in summary, this blog will be left up as an archive. it's unlikely that another bracket will be created, but if it is, it will be made with another blog, not using this same sideblog.

i think the plan after this tournament finishes is to have a queue set up where we reblog art onto here for people to be able to see, since we have amassed a fairly large following from the polls and also it's a nice touch to round it all off.

But I've got all these squares now. And I did math and adjusted my skirt pattern. And the bodice pieces are already cut out.

Hi, my name is Salix! I use he/they pronouns. I’m not really a battler or anything, but I do have some Pokémon! I have a little Smoliv named Squash and a diabetic alert Chingling named Dex! I also just recently caught a Ditto that I’m calling Slami!

Overall, I just adore learning about Pokémon! Maybe I should look into a track to become a professor 🤔

Lots of my friends have Pokémon as well, so they might pop up every so often! For the ones living with me- partner has a cute little Eevee named Skipper, and… My roommate has something he’s calling a “Silvally”- whatever that is. And I know he lets it into the house when he thinks we’re sleeping. If I see that thing on the couch I’m going to explode.

There are a number of mods on this page related to stairs. Stair Straight Mod: This mod allows multiple sims to use regular, straight stairs. In an unmodded game, only one sim can use one side of a regular staircase. Maxis attempted to make it so that sims would be able to wait in queue, but this only partially works if the sim is attempting to descend. Even then, if the sim attempts to ascend or descend while another sim is already using the stairs, the sim throws a route failure tantrum. This mod fixes all of these issues. However, there are a few things that had to be done in order to account for certain special features of regular staircases. - Elders and adults walk at different speeds on regular staircases, unlike other types of stairs. This mod makes it so that if the staircase is already being used, then every new sim who starts using the stairs will ascend or descend at elder speed, because otherwise they walk through elders. - If a sim is running, and if there is another sim using the staircase, the new sim will always walk, and will continue running, if need be, after they ascend or descend. Otherwise, sims would run through walking sims on the staircase. UPDATE 1: This is a very important update that adds new features and checks. Also, I realized that sims do walk at different speeds on all types of stairs depending on age, not just on regular staircases, which causes non-elders to sometimes go through elders on spiral stairs from Apartment Life. It looks like Maxis copied the code from regular stairs into spiral stairs, and didn't bother adding any checks. This mod currently only affects regular stairs. I may make a new mod to fix the spiral stairs from Apartment Life in the future, but I think it is not a priority. - When a sim is trying to use the stairs, if all the other sims on the stairs are running, then the game will allow the new sim to run, too. - When a sim is trying to use the stairs, if an elder sim is already using the stairs, if neither the new sim nor the elder is running, or if both the new sim and the elder are running, then the game will make the new sim use the stairs at elder speed. - Here is the most important new feature: if after using the stairs, multiple sims end up on one single tile (mostly happens if you order them to the top or bottom tile of the stairs when free will is off), then the game will now try to find a suitable spot for the sims nearby and set their location there, just like it does with spiral stairs. Otherwise, it was possible for sims to end up stuck and unable to route. UPDATE 2: Fixed an oversight from the previous update. I have also released an edited version of Marvine's Ladder that prevents sims from going through each other with this mod. Sims who are trying to go in the opposite direction will wait for others to finish using the ladder just like Maxis' spiral stairs from Apartment Life. Pets cannot use this version, because they don't have any animations. You need Stair Straight Mod in order to use this edited version of the ladder. UPDATE 3: There was a rare situation in which a non-elder sim who was about to start to use a staircase would be allowed to move at non-elder speed even though there were other non-elders who were currently using the stairs at elder speed, because there was an elder sim on the stairs when they started using the stairs. This update fixes that. I have also updated my edited version of Marvine's ladder with this new fix. I have also released an edited version of Salix's ladder, which is a clone of Marvine's ladder, and sims will now wait if there are sims using these stairs in the opposite direction. You can get more recolours for these stairs by RocketHorseSims here. UPDATE 4: There was another case in which sims would not consider the ascending/descending speed of other sims, which would cause them to go through each other. This should finally be fixed. I have also updated Marvine's and Salix's ladders with this new feature.

Note: If you have Marvine's Ladder, then sims will ascend and descend through each other if sims are going in opposite directions. Normally, one would only allow a sim to use that ladder if all other sims are also going in the same direction as the sim who is considering to use the ladder, just like Maxis' spiral stairs from Apartment Life. However, the ladder is cloned from regular stairs and it doesn't have this feature. The ladder would have to be modified quite a bit to add this functionality. So, sims going in opposite directions will go through each other on the ladder if you have this mod and the ladder at the same time. Edit: I have now released an edited version of Marvine's and Salix's ladder that prevents sims from going through each other with this mod. Sims who are trying to go in the opposite direction will wait for others to finish using the ladder just like Maxis' spiral stairs from Apartment Life. Pets cannot use this version, because they don't have any animations. You need Stair Straight Mod in order to use this edited version of the ladder. Stair Modular Pets Fix: This mod fixes an issue in the game which prevents large dogs from using two-step modular stairs. Thanks to CharlieSiedjan and CatherineTCJD in the comments section informing me of this problem. Note that I believe the only way to get two-step modular stairs in the game is by following this tutorial, or you can download houses already built using this method. Stair Modular Sim Run Fix: This mod fixes another issue I came across in the game which makes sims who run up (not down) a two-step modular stair play the final step ascending animation twice. This mod fixes this issue. Stair Spiral Mod: This mod adds some interesting features to spiral stairs. I mentioned in the description for Stair Straight Mod that Maxis simply copy/pasted the code from straight stairs into spiral stairs and didn't modify their code enough for the unique features of spiral stairs. In an unmodded game, sims can go through elders on spiral stairs, because they don't consider the speed of other sims using the stairs. In addition, the most annoying thing about spiral stairs is that sims can't run up or down these stairs and it takes them forever to go up or down multiple floors. This is most noticeable when firefighters are trying to get to an apartment 5 floors up which can only be reached through spiral staircases. This mod fixes these issues. Sims now care about the speed of other sims on the stairs and won't go through each other. In addition, sims who are running will actually run up and down spiral stairs now. Stair Spiral Slide Fix: This is a separate mod that fixes a very annoying issue with spiral stairs. Sometimes, when children or teens slide down a spiral staircase, they have the potential to cause the stairs to become unusable. Sims who try to use such a stair end up entering a loop where they wait and fail to use the stairs over and over. This mod should fix this issue.

who’s excited for stats so far?? i bet none of you are but i’m inflicting them anyway! ...under a cut.

so far, though, we have 198 separate submissions across 166 works!

so far the longest submission piece is 551 words long! wow! there are also another 3 submissions that are over 300 words long, and one piece has 797 words across 7 submissions! the shortest submission, to contrast, is 5 words long! that’s also great!

there are currently 4 artists that have had 3 pieces of art each submitted, and 8 artists that have had 2 pieces. that means there’s currently 137 other artists! oh sorry, while i was drafting this post we got a fourth submission for one of the four.

how about things anyone can go look at? there are currently 7 pieces of public art that have been submitted! four of them are from canada (and 3 are from the calgary specifically), one is in the netherlands, one is in spain, and one is in new york. the fourth canadian one also has copies in spain, japan, and arkansas. there are also 3 submitted buildings! two are in spain, and one is in thailand!

gender! we’ve got 122 pieces from male artists, and 32 pieces by female artists! yes that doesn’t add up to 166, the other 12 are either multiple artists, unknown artists, or i felt like a creeper trying to trawl through their tumblr/website and it wasn’t in their bio. sadly, we don’t have any openly trans, nb, or otherwise genderqueer artists submitted (where openly is “i could find it in the same 5 second google search to determine nationalities”)

even more niche stats! the largest submission (that isn’t a building, a cave, or public art) is 2.15 m (7 ft 1 in) x 34.14 m (112.0 ft) and weighs 4 tons! close behind it is another that's approximately 3.7m x 25.2m (12ft x 72.9ft) but weighs significantly less! i did not feel like mathing which had more square footage. the smallest submission (that is, a physical piece in real life, digital art can be insanely small) is 5.9 x 6 cm (2 5/16 x 2 3/8 in.)!

how about locations? excluding the multiple copies ones, there are 32 pieces located in the united states, 9 in spain, 8 in france, 6 in canada, 5 in england, 4 in italy, 3 each in russia, australia and mexico, 2 each in the netherlands, wales, scotland, and ireland, and 1 each in israel, finland, germany, portugal, poland, japan, austria, ecuador, thailand, latvia, singapore, belgium, and argentina! i know that doesn’t add up but there’s a lot of pieces in private collections, owned by the artist, or we just couldn’t find their location, sadly.

artist nationalities get a lot more variable! i did my best to look up every artist i could and include their birth country and the country they did their works in! except john singer sargent because he just didn’t want to settle down and i didn’t want to give him like six different countries. 

starting off, we have 43 submissions by american artists! 18 by french artists, 17 by english, 8 each by canadians and italians, 6 each by russians and spaniards, 5 each by chinese, irish, and germans, 4 each by dutch, mexican and belgians, 3 by latvians, 2 each by finnish, polish, scottish, malay, serbian, and armenians, and 1 each by portuguese, japanese, austrian, ecuadorian, thai, swiss, argentine, cuban, kazhak, colombian, danish, and iranian! 

i do not currently have stats for jewish artists for you, because i forgot to write it down my first time through wiki, and now i have to go through all ~140 articles and websites again. relatedly: there are 8 works by known-to-be-gay artists, but i’m already running into wikipedia going “well he sure did a lot of male nudes but he also might have had relationships with women” and i am feeling uncomfortable poking through people’s private lives so... i hope you don’t mind it i stop... counting..... i mean if they’re open about it i’ll write it down still.

how about the ages of works? there are 4 things from before the 1400s, 3 from the 1400s, 6 from the 1500s, 3 from the 1600s, and 2 from the 1700s! 5 from 1800-1850, 4 from 1850-1880, 10 from the 1880s, and 9 from the 1890s! 9 from the 1900s (that is, 1900-1909), 5 from the 1910s, 5 from the 1920s, 4 from the 1930s, 4 from the 1940s, and 6 from the 1950s! 3 from the 60s, 4 from the 70s, 7 from the 80s, 15 from the 90s, 12 from the new oughts, 17 from the 2010s, and 13 from the 2020s! and three ongoing projects!

and to wrap things up: there are 101 paintings, 12 sculptures, 17 what i’m calling installations (they’re often mixed media or unusual media, i would give examples but i feel like i would bias submissions), 6 photographs, 2 pieces of textile art, and 21 digital arts, drawings, or comics!

Stats Part 3

Now that Round 3 is over, we're down to 32 (well, 33) remaining artworks which feels about time to check in on how our statistics are doing!

And if you're not interested in statistics, I (Mod Salix) wanted to talk about the polls. You may have noticed that I've been trying to keep to 4 polls a day, which would mean that Round 4 is only going to be 4 days, and Round 5 would post everything in two days. Starting in Round 6, we'll probably re-institute week long polls. Hopefully none of us will lose track of what day to post the next round!

We have 20 artworks by male artists, 10 by female artists, and 4 by groups or unknowable entities! And of those, one person is Black, two are Aboriginal (one of whom is Mestizo and Kichwa, the other of whom is Aboriginal Australian), one is Asian-American (and two are Chinese living in China as opposed to living somewhere they're a minority), and one is Indian-British. And also three are left from gay men about the AIDS crisis, in addition to the AIDS memorial quilt, and one lesbian comic.

There are six American artists (including the Asian-American mentioned above), and three Chinese artists (including the Asian-American mentioned above), as well as three Russians (including Ilya Repin, who was born in the future Ukraine and lived near St. Petersburg), technically two different pieces by the same Dutch artist (hi van Gogh), and one each from Argentina, Serbia, Ecuador, Colombia, Canada, Italy, Northern Ireland, Poland, Australia, Finland, Germany, France, and Britain. And one artist I have listed as Denmark/Germany/France, because August Friedrich Schenck was born in a place that was Denmark at the time, Germany now, and worked mostly in France.

Of the pieces with known locations, eight are in the United States (four specifically in New York), two each in Australia and Russia, and one each in Argentina, Finland, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland and one in a private collection.

There are two archaic pieces of art, Judith is our last standing piece from anything between archaic and 1843, 8 pieces of art from the 1800s, although five are from 1878 to 1896, one from 1903, two from the 70s or 80s, 5 from the 90s, four from the 00s, four from the span of 2014 to 2016, and three from the last two years. And two unknown dates and the AIDS memorial quilt which is still being added to.

There are 15 paintings, 7 installation arts, one comic, one photograph, one cave art, one sketch, one tattoo, and one fiber art slash installation. And the most common subject of the art are five queer related art pieces, although I have four each I summed up as either horror or grief/anguish.

And, lastly, someone sent in an ask in like Round 1 asking about statistics regarding whether being in first or second place in the poll biased anything. I'm not actually a statistician, so I can't answer that question, but I did compile the numbers of how many first-positioned vs second-positioned arts won! Surprisingly, Round 1 had 64 firsts to 63 seconds (and one tie), Round 2 had 29 to 35, and Round 3 had 15 to 17. Technically speaking that's not a large enough sample size to determine bias but it's... interesting?.

why'd you choose three scaffolders to go up against ivan the terrible? that's a genuine question btw you'd mentioned ivan as being one of the front runners so i was wondering if you chose a sacrificial lamb to leave the real battles to later

To be completely honest with you: the majority are completely random. We chose, by my count, 32 [edit: 35?] pairings of the 126. Most of those are either dogs, ancient art, same artist, same theme, or buildings. We did deliberately place the Tumblr Faves first, and then randomized everything else. After randomizing, we skimmed to make sure there wasn't anything egregious, so we had 1 set we had to alter (Exotic Bodies rolled to be up against something that felt really bad, like, Christian pitted against Islam kind of thing which we were really trying to avoid in the first round, and originally we moved The Captive to be against Starry Night because its first randomization was as bad, but I can't remember what it was against now. Might've been versus the screaming pope, but I don't remember moving it THAT far. Seated Woman With Bent Knee was originally randomized against Starry Night, so when we replaced The Captive we put it back.)

Three Scaffolders, just like Stress vs Fallen Angel, and Salvator Mundi vs Untitled Billboard and Rothko vs Quilt, was random. There were a lot of surprisingly good matchups via random.org! Grief of the Pasha being vs a non-realist sculptural monolith and right next to The Monets is utterly hilarious! (the guy despised impressionism) Diana and Fifty Days at Iliam accidentally making the second a result of her arrow worked great! Anguish and If I Died were both animal themes! The cats were random! People keep complimenting our matchups and it's funny because it's mostly random. I mean, a few of the tumblr favs were deliberate, you can blame Mod Salix for forcing you to choose between AIDS grief art since the overlap in theme there was just.... too much to not notice, but most are not.
