The Realism Movement (1840s)
“Realism is recognized as the first modern movement in art, which rejected traditional forms of art, literature, and social organization.”
“...concerned itself with how life was structured socially, economically, politically, and culturally in the mid-nineteenth century. This led to unflinching, sometimes "ugly" portrayals of life's unpleasant moments and the use of dark, earthy palettes that confronted high art's ultimate ideals of beauty.”
This art movement was one of counter culture, and a direct attack on the forms of government (like the monarchy) who enabled the rich and who thus monopolized the art market. But! With the birth of the industrial revolution it allowed self-made artists to have access to an audience using the printing press.

“I live life in the margins of society, and the rules of normal society don't apply to those who live on the fringe.”
-Tamara de Lempicka
“Tamara de Lempicka stood at the center of the sophisticated Paris art world of the 1920s and 30s. Her love for beautiful women, elegant automobiles, and the modern metropolis provided not only motifs for her pictures, but also influenced her artistic style. Simultaneously with her career as artist, she pioneered a new image of life on the screen, evident in the new, self-confident woman and the changing aspects of femininity and masculinity.”
She was considered a “starlet” folks, and also lived her life as an openly bisexual woman. Praise be!

"Keep a light burning because I will always return" -Oswaldo Guayasamin
“Guayasamin is considered an important figure in Latin America not only for his unique style, but also for his role in recording the politics, history and struggle of the indigenous cultures of [Ecuador]. Beyond that, he is also important on a universal level for his interest and compassion in mankind and human nature as a whole.”
Please read more here
Guayasamin’s style was entirely his own and people fondly remember his expressive way of painting hands. He also believe it’s an artist’s duty to document current events and give a voice to those with little agency or those who were forgotten by society.

Abbott Thayer, and his Angel Series
“An American artist, naturalist and teacher. As a painter of portraits, figures, animals and landscapes, he enjoyed a certain prominence during his lifetime, and his paintings are represented in the major American art collections. He is perhaps best known for his 'angel' paintings, some of which use his children as models.” -Wiki
His great love of birds translated into his Angel Series by literally putting wings on his subjects/daughters. Abbot also said that women were superior to men in all forms due to their “virtuous nature”, so maybe the series was the embodiment of this.

Art Challenge: Friend's Portrait
“Vincent van Gogh rounded off every day in the bar, where the ‘absinthes and brandies would follow each other in quick succession’. Van Gogh himself later admitted that he was ‘almost an alcoholic’ by the time he left for Arles . Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec had good reason, therefore, for sketching his friend at a table with a glass of absinthe.” (Read more here)
(”Portrait of Vincent van Gogh” by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec)
