MAJOR SPOILERS FOR A DATE WITH DEATH AFTER THE Keep reading SELECTION

I was originally going to write a wholesome Jaehee x MC fic about them celebrating their first Pride Month as a couple, seeing as I can’t remember writing a lesbian couple before. However, I realised I won't be able to figure out how to write fitting dialogue for Jaehee in time to post, so I decided to save that for a later time and write about Grim to celebrate the Kickstarter for the ADWD sequel being fully funded. And as always, thank you to Mod Astraea for proofreading and providing insight~☆ –Edi

　Sunny typed away at their desk, bouncing a leg and humming a tune as Casper lay on the bed, lazily kicking his legs behind him while reading. He flipped through the pages indifferently until some words caught his attention.

　He scanned over them a couple times before sitting up and furrowing his brows.

　“Sunshine?”

　They stopped humming but continued typing. “Hm?”

　“This book you had on your shelf… It contains a lot of information on mortal preferences for romantic interests.”

　“Mhm.”

　Clack clack clack.

　“I’m…curious about something.”

　“M’kay.”

　Clack clack clack.

　“What does—”

　Clack clack clack clack clack.

　“Would you stop that and pay attention?!”

　They swiveled their chair around. “I was, but okay. You have my undivided attention.”

　Casper huffed before holding the book up for Sunny to look at. “What does this mean?”

　“‘Demiromantic.’”

　“Yes. What is it?”

　They tilted their head. “The definition’s right there.”

　“I don’t…fully comprehend what it means.”

　“Well…” Sunny sat back in the chair. “A lot of people can feel romantically attracted to someone very soon after meeting them…”

　“Okay…” Casper lowered the book slowly as he listened.

　“Demiromantic people need to have a strong bond with whoever they’re attracted to beforehand.”

　“I see… And is ‘demisexual’ related to ‘demiromantic’?”

　“Kiiiind of? ‘Demiromantic’ is romantic attraction, and ‘demisexual’ is sexual attraction. They don't always go together, but they tend to.”

　Casper furrowed his brows quizzically, looking at the book again. “So ‘demisexual’ requires a strong connection in order for someone to be physically attracted.”

　“Yeah.”

　He didn’t speak for a bit.

　“What’re you thinking?”

　He put a hand to the back of his neck. “I think…that's me. This ‘demiromantic.’”

　Sunny waited for him to continue, something Casper picked up on immediately because of how they weren't yapping incessantly for once.

　“Is this a serious subject?” he asked slowly.

　“Ehhhh… Not if you don't want it to be. I can go back to making fun of you if you w—”

　“No.” He stared indignantly. “No. Do not.”

　Sunny crossed their legs casually and leaned on the armrest, a ghost of a smile tugging at the corner of their mouth. “’Kay~”

　“I…” Casper started, gathering his hair over his shoulder and running his hands over it, “I assumed it was due to my dedication to my work, but…I didn't…”

　He glanced up at Sunny.

　“I didn't feel drawn to anyone until you.”

　Sunny didn't say anything. Casper waited for a few moments before risking another peek.

　They were…smiling. Gently smiling.

　“No quip?”

　“Do you want me to?”

　“No,” he responded softly.

　They sat in near-silence for a while longer until Casper spoke up.

　“Is it accurate?”

　“The book?”

　“The concept. Does it apply to me?”

　Sunny uncrossed their legs and sat up a bit straighter. “That's up to you. If you learn that you feel differently later, you can use different labels to describe yourself. Or choose not to use any at all.”

　“It's that simple?”

　They smirked. “The only one who can know for sure is you; it’s not like there's a queer police.” They paused. “Well, there are people who’ll try to decide for you, even if they're not straight.”

　“That… You mortals formed a community but exclude people who don't seem like they meet the criteria?”

　“Some people are dumb,” they answered matter-of-factly.

　He frowned while Sunny drummed their fingers on the armrest.

　“You don't have to tell anyone. I mean… I’m glad you told me, seeing as we’re together, but you can keep it a secret if you aren't comfortable sharing.”

　He stared down at the book in his hands.

　“And…demisexual…” he muttered, blushing slightly, “That sounds correct, too.”

　“Alright,” they replied, unable to hide the hint of amusement in their voice.

　Casper blushed more. “You're laughing at me.”

　“I’m not~ I’m just thinking about what might've led up to you determining that.”

　He blushed even further, hiding his mouth and mumbling a “you.”

　Sunny’s eyes lit up. “Really?!”

　“Yes,” he grumbled.

　“You really feel that way?”

　He glared ruefully. “You’re so damn enticing. Your face is enchanting, your hands are alluring… How else am I supposed to feel?”

　They stared at him with wide eyes before breaking into a massive grin.

　“Ah, shit—”

　“You think I’m irresistible~?” they giggled, flopping down on the bed and across Casper's lap.

　He rolled his eyes. “I am constantly resisting you, so no.”

　“But the fact that you even have to resist me means I make you feel strongly.”

　“Birdbrain.”

　“Bonehead.”

　“I told you; Grim Reapers are not skele—”

　“Why am I rattling your bones so much, then?”

　He closed his eyes and inhaled.

　“You are everything I desire,” he started, sighing exasperatedly, “along with so many things I do not.”

　“You got a 2-for-1 special.”

　He grunted and looked away.

　“Hey, Casper.”

　“What.”

　He jumped a bit as Sunny sat up and put their face close to his— so close that their noses were nearly touching.

　“What are you…doing?”

　They didn't respond and kept looking into his eyes. He shifted awkwardly.

　“Sunshine?”

　They continued gazing into his eyes, causing his blush to spread to his ears.

　“I-I…”

　His eyes flitted to the side in an attempt to stop himself from becoming too flustered. He could practically feel their gaze giving him sunburn.

　After the silence became too unnerving for him, he bridged the gap, giving them a quick kiss before turning away embarrassedly to look at literally anything else.

　“Aww~ What a lovely surprise~” they mused sarcastically.

　He let out a huff, sounding significantly less annoyed and more self-conscious than he’d hoped. He stared at Azrael lounging against the pillows, hoping to regain his composure.

　There was a gentle weight on his shoulder. He looked and saw Sunny resting their chin on him with a look of adoration in their eyes.

　He squinted and turned his head slightly, shielding himself from their aura with a hand. “Nine hells; you’re brighter than hellfire.”

　“Are you calling me radiant~?”

　“Yes. In the worst of ways.”

　They stayed quiet until Sunny chortled and took their head off his shoulder.

　“What?”

　“Just remembered one of our video calls.”

　“Which one?”

　“Twenty questions.”

　“Dare I ask?” he questioned warily.

　“You said you’d never been in love and that you wouldn’t kiss someone you didn’t love.”

　He tensed up.

　“That means you were in love with me when you came to live here,” Sunny said, smiling to themself.

　Casper blushed, searching frantically for a way around his inability to lie that he was at that stage so soon.

　“Technically, you kissed me,” he mumbled.

　“Dang. I thought I’d be able to make you say more sappy stuff.”

　“Shut up…”

　“Ooh; wait. Now that you know you’re demi, there’s something I’m wondering about.”

　“…Yes?” he asked cautiously.

　“Would you still have feelings for me if I were a different gender?”

　“Yes. Why?”

　“Any gender?”

　“I…think so, but why are you asking me thi—”

　“‘Panromantic’ means you can be romantically interested regardless of gender, so if you’re demi and pan and Death, would that make you a pandemic?”

　His face clouded over with a grimace as he sighed, “Fuck you.”

　“Yes, please.”

　Tomatofication and stammering ensued at the immediate response.

　“Y-You— Don't just— I mean, if you— This is very sudden; I’m not sure if that's a…”

　They smiled, charmed by his flustered state. “I’m messing with you.”

　“Sunny!” he exclaimed, “Don't do that!”

　“Can’t promise.”

　Casper crossed his arms and closed his eyes in an attempt to will away his flushed face. “Why don’t you have the ability to remain serious for more than two minutes?”

　“Because I wouldn’t be me~”

　He huffed.

　Sunny put their knee against his after admiring his pout for a few seconds.

　“Thank you for telling me. I’m happy you feel safe with me knowing.”

　His expression softened as he looked away and uncrossed his arms, shyly sliding his hand over theirs.

　“I appreciate the explanations.”

Hi! I'd love to join to your event, but it's my first time, so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right 😭 anyway, here's my request! Who, out of Mystic Messenger characters, would likely ace and win the werewolf party game as the chosen werewolf? I've always wondered about this because all of them are smart and perceptive, so it'll be quite challenging to lie and fool them. Thank you very much! 💙

You are definitely doing it right! I actually love this request…and my wallet might be a little lighter and a new game to play might be on its way to me so I can work it into game nights instead of playing more of Grant Howitt’s  one-page rpg’s, which I highly recommend, by the way for anyone into that kind of stuff. I loved imagining this and I hope you’ll enjoy the headcanons, dear! Thanks for the request!

So, if it’s the game I found, just to explain it to everyone, you need seven players to have a game – one moderator, one seer, one doctor, and two werewolves with the rest of the players being villagers. The game cycles between day and night rounds. At night, the moderator makes everyone close their eyes and the players have to slap their knees or the table to cover up any noises of the night. The mod then tells the werewolves to open their eyes and choose someone to kill and the werewolves have to agree on someone by pointing and silent gestures. When a victim has been decided and the moderator knows who they picked, the werewolves close their eyes on mod orders and the mod awakens the doctor, who can heal either themselves or someone else. Whoever is healed is safe from being killed from the werewolves. The doctor is put back to sleep once they’ve chosen and the moderator tells the seer to open their eyes. The Seer then opens their eyes and points to another player, where the mod will then silently confirm whether or not that player is a werewolf via thumbs up or thumbs down and the Seer will learn the player’s game identity that way. The Seer then goes back to sleep and the moderator tells everyone to open their eyes because it is daytime, along with announcing any player who died or was saved during the night. If someone is killed, they’re out of the game and they can’t reveal their character. People then have to guess who the werewolf is. If a player is accused and the accusation is supported by a second player, the accused has 30 seconds to defend themselves and it’s then put up to a vote to decide their fate. If the majority votes for it, the player is killed off.

So now that everyone knows how the game works…since there needs to be seven players, I’m imagining this as Jumin, Zen, Yoosung, Jaehee, Saeyoung, Saeran, and Vanderwood playing.

Jumin is almost always chosen to be moderator. It’s to the point where, no matter what, even if someone else got that role, they just tell him they’re trading with him. He’s just so great for the role because he’s meticulous, well-organized, remembers everyone’s roles and what they did on their turn, and has such a good poker face that he never leads the players to knowing who is who by his expressions or by any careless words.

Zen would be so into any type of game like this because it’s just another chance to put his acting chops to work. Other than 707, he’s almost never found out as the werewolf, and he’ll lie so effortlessly in game that it’s really going to keep anyone from suspecting him much. He’s really fond of using the ‘Village Drunk’ role route, where he pretends that was the role he picked, while actually being the werewolf. He’s not a great Doctor and he usually ends up healing himself because he wants to keep playing the game. But it’s almost uncanny how well he picks when he is chosen as the Seer. Like, nine out of ten times, he’s choosing the right person as the Werewolf on the first go. He doesn’t hold onto the information though and he’s going to use what he learned to try to persuade everyone into voting for that player to be put to death, normally winning everyone over.

Yoosung is probably the worst one when he is chosen to become a Werewolf. He’s really not a good liar in the least and he’ll overcompensate by talking way too much and arguing just a bit too hard. He’s really transparent and the others normally get him within the first round or two. He really excels at his role when he’s playing the Doctor though. I think he normally plays as a tank or a healer in his video games, so he’s really good at protecting the other players without ever thinking of healing himself. And he’s pretty smart. He’ll notice any tensions or arguments that might have happened that, even if they were good-natured, might make someone petty enough to target the other person if either one became the werewolf and he’ll actively act to heal that person. He’s really rather awful as the Seer though because he doesn’t really ever know who to pick and just randomly points.

Saeyoung actually really loves being the werewolf and he’s the best one at it. He’s so used to lying, with his work for the Agency and all those years of pushing down his feelings and pretending to be a-okay that having to lie and pretend won’t bother him at all.  He’ll sometimes come right outright and say, ‘I’m the werewolf’, while laughing and making silly gestures or sounds, because everyone is so used to him joking and teasing and being a goofball that they sometimes forget to take him seriously, even though he’s given them lots of reasons to. Because of that persona of his and how easily he slips into it though, he’s able to get away pretty much unsuspected for quite a while, if not for the whole game. As a doctor, he’d be better if he didn’t just keep healing Saeran. Nobody else, no matter what, just Saeran. He's also a really good Seer too, and he’s able to pick up on clues pretty easy in what people say while voting, but he also has a nasty tendency of acting like he doesn’t know who the Werewolves are and arguing against them being them, just because he thinks it makes the game more interesting.

Saeran hasn’t really gotten many opportunities to play games like this and for the first time or two it’s played, he’s not great at it because he’s so busy trying to memorize the rules and the roles and everything. But he grows to be so good at it…except that, it turns out, he’s surprisingly really damn competitive against both his brother and Yoosung and he’ll target them incessantly as a Werewolf to the point where, unless the other Werewolf just goes along with him or is caught, picking the victim can be really hard and time-consuming. And when it comes time to vote on who to kill, he’s the first one to accuse one of the two until they are for sure out of the game, or he is. He’s really cut-throat that way, actually.

Vanderwood doesn’t know why the fuck he’s playing as everyone votes to have him killed first. It’s not that they don’t trust him at all; it’s that they don’t trust him as much as they do the others. He’s outright asked Jumin to be the moderator so he can actually make it all the way through a game for once, but Saeyoung never allows that to happen.

Jaehee actually does everything she can to be really obvious if she's the Werewolf and to do everything she can to get voted out early because she really isn't too interested in actually playing the game. She'd rather relax with a coffee and watch the drama that comes about (and Zen's acting in game, of course).

In regards of the roleplay, you can either choose a canon character or make your own original character for the RP. You can apply for a character making a submission, which consists on basic data of your desired character, personality description, appearance description/reference, and a roleplay sample. You can also add a backstory if you're submitting an OC. Currently you can have up to 2 characters per user, and it to be either 1 RFA canon, 1 Another Story canon, 1 RFA oc, or 1 Mint Eye oc.

Plot:

Same base as the original game, with the difference that Rika's appartment is more house-like, and has enough rooms for several MCs. The RFA chatroom was hacked, letting a lot of random people access the app. These people were tricked into going to Rika's house and now they're all staying there while 707 tries to fix the app and fight the hacker. The MCs are able to leave the house up to four hours per day to buy groceries, visit other characters or whatever they like. We also got the Mint Eye believers. Each one of them has a number code (i. e., A306) and a role inside of the cult. They have a lot more freedom than the RFA OCs, as long as they don't rebel against Rika and do their job.

Plot is better detailed in the server.

"Woah that sure is one huge snowfall! Guess we can expect a white Christmas this year around. Yoosung will be thrilled." Saeyoung let out a low whistle, shielding his eyes from the pouring snow and overlooking the perimeter of their newly made front porch, now being completely covered in deep snowdrifts.

"Well, you have your work cut out for you. No basement can save you from cleaning now. Good luck clearing all that snow off your porch if you want to go out." Vanderwood's voice sounded dry, although they couldn't hide a sly grin stretching the corners of their lips. While the older twin was enthusiastically looking over the snowy view, practically bending over the railing in the process, Saeran and the former agent stood a few feet away, hidden safely from the raging snowfall by a sturdy roof. Vanderwood crossed their arms over their chest, leaning on a nearby wall with their hip. "-And before you start nagging: no, I won't be doing that for you. Don't even try."

A wounded whine followed suit, as Saeyoung clutched at his chest in a fake display of hurt. "Ms. Vanderwood, why do you have to be so harsh!? Can't you just appreciate the beauty of winter right before our eyes? Besides, I know you love cleaning! I might even lend you one of my babies as a Christmas gift..."

"-Stop trying to bribe them to do your dirty work for you, you idiot." Saeran suddenly spoke up, his red locks peeking out from under a knitted hat carelessly thrown over his head. He looked quite uncomfortable in the multiple layers of thick clothing put on him, and yet, that's the first time he actively spoke out loud ever since they came out here. His mint gaze narrowed with clear irritation plastered over his face.

Quite obviously, this was about something entirely different, rather than the whole argument about clearing the snow.

Still, the way the younger twin puffed out his reddened cheeks under the safe cover of a soft scarf was just too adorable to ignore, which is why a series of quiet chucking followed, much to Saeran's further annoyance.

"Jeez, Saeyoung, are you trying to make a living cocoon out of your brother or something? There's clearly more than two layers of clothing under that coat." Vanderwood mused, only now taking notice of the boy's uncomfortable situation.

Suddenly, Saeyoung stumbled over his words, clearly feeling somewhat embarrassed by his former partner's remarks, which was quite uncharacteristic of him. "W-well, it's important to stay warm during this kind of weather! I'd hate for you to get sick, so you need to make sure you have enough protection against the cold, you know? And I know that your immune system is not that strong, so..."

He scratched at the back of his neck, only now realizing just how silly his own words sounded when being spoken out loud.

Ugh, if only you were here, this wouldn't have happened in the first place... You were always there to make sure that he wouldn't get too overbearing with his brother. But, since you were busy helping Jaehee with the opening of her new cafe at the moment, he was stuck dealing with his closest family all by himself. Which was definitely a good thing! However, he couldn't help but feel like he just screwed up.

Like he always does.

Before he could say anything to apologize, though, the older twin was interrupted by the exasperated sigh coming from Vanderwood. They merely rolled their eyes at his perplexed reaction, suddenly coming up to him to slightly flick him on the forehead. Not expecting something like that from his former partner whatsoever, Saeyoung stumbled back a bit, letting out an awkward: 'uh-', before quickly regaining his balance once more.

They raised a brow quizzically. "I know that look. Stop overanalyzing everything inside your own head and relax. Nothing horrible happened. You just wanted to protect your family in a pretty ridiculous way. It happens in every family. But, you know that Saeran is more resistable to cold temperature than it may seem at first glance. There's no need for you to try and make these decisions for him. Just trust him, even if that's scary the first few times around. Sure, it'll suck if he'll get sick, but then you'll both learn a lesson. Ease up on yourself."

Saeyoung blinked, not sure how to even respond to such a sentiment coming from Vanderwood of all people. All he could do was stand there with his mouth hanging open, like a fish out of water.

Seemingly satisfied with his response, the former agent instead turned to the younger twin this time. "And Saeran?"

The other Choi kept quiet, although his gaze was focused firmly on Vanderwood, letting them know that he was, in fact, paying close attention. Saeran was always way less talkative than his brother, which they quickly learned and adapted to accordingly.

"You could say something earlier, instead of just glaring daggers at him throughout the whole process and hoping that he would get it. This one here is horrible when it comes to hints like that. Believe me, I know. Yeah, he may be a bit too much to handle sometimes, but I'm pretty sure he would back off without putting up a fight, if you'd just tell him that you'll be fine on your own. Even twins sometimes have to deal with stupid misunderstandings like these, and you two still have a long road ahead of you."

Saeran's eyes widened slightly as he listened, before he quickly averted his gaze to the side and borrowed his visibly blushing face into the fabric of his scarf. Still, he did respond with nod and a quiet: "Okay."

"...Wow. You're like our parent or something." Saeyoung muttered, feeling somewhat dumbfounded and touched all at the same time with this whole situation.

This time, it was Vanderwood's turn to blush and choke as they turned their full attention to the older twin again.

"Say something so ridiculous like that again, and I will personally push you into a snowdrift!"

Secret Sen lore. I first met my friend Aya (@/slurpn00dles) and other friends in 2018 in a Mystic Messenger Discord server that I helped mod ^^ I first played MM back in 2016 (pretty soon after launch date).

Thoughts on Jumin and Unknown/Saeran

My fave was immediately Jumin. Weird cat… I missed your cat text bubbles Jumin!!! 🐈‍⬛����💜

I was going through all the calls and chatroom logs I did back then. Trip down memory lane...

My faves are Jumin and Unknown/Saeran (OS), tied. Saeran's OS self and my rewrite AU version of him makes him tied with Jumin. My fave MM ships are Jumin/MC and Saeran/MC cuz I favour meow meow mfs. They bring such interesting tension to ships!

Jumin is the silly rich stoic aloof CEO type who obsesses over his cat. He's a cat dad who likes sewing. He's ace spec and funny with huge gap moe. I like his emotional maturity, speaking style, and his struggles with loneliness, solitude and emotional repression. He's genuinely likeable imo.

Unknown/Saeran (OS) is also my fave 🩷 I always love cool interesting antagonist charas with good designs. His design and personality have such c*nt. Love him. Doodle is based on this Unknown/Saeran x MC Welcome screen line~

Some thoughts

Mystic Messenger is a Korean romance visual novel (otome game) that released with 5 routes referred to as Original Story (OS).

Mystic Messenger released with routes for the RFA members and the Secret Endings (post-707 route). These 5 routes are referred to as Original Story (OS).

Casual Story: Zen, Yoosung, Jaehee

Deep Story: Jumin, 707

Cheritz wanted to cater to fans who wanted routes for Unknown/Saeran and V due to their popularity, so they created Another Story (AS).

When Ray Route first released in Another Story (AS), I wasn't satisfied, like imo it's the worst MM route by far. Like wtf. I never wanted the route with my fave to play out like that.

I think Another Story (AS) is a shitty AU (imo) that takes Saeran's character in REALLY poor writing directions.

Since I shipped Saeran x MC way before Another Story came out, I just thought it was gonna be like... Enemies to Lovers, but with a mysterious, ominous enemy.

Unknown was just better as a mysterious and ominous enemy in OS. But I still think Saeran's route could've been done MUCH better though.

Unknown/Saeran (OS) Route Rewrite AU

I started coming up with an Unknown/Saeran (OS) route rewrite AU where Miyeon (MC) accepts Unknown's invitation to come with him to Mint Eye. Miyeon infiltrates Mint Eye to find out more info about the hacker, Unknown, and the place called “Magenta,” the headquarters of Rika's organization, Mint Eye.

My AU plays out more like a crime drama. Miyeon is on a crime investigation mission! It takes place in the Original Story (OS) setting and has much better relationship development, and growth and healing for him.

MC’s name is Chae Miyeon (채미연/采美蓮)

Miyeon (미연/美蓮) means “beautiful lotus” 🪷💗

I chose the name myself since I wanted to pick a pretty name meaning. I thought it’d be cool if she had a name that matches the letters MC (or technically CM, in EA naming order)

I still need to draw her. I imagine her appearance is just like the default MM MC with long brown hair and gold eyes, but she has a big ribbon in the back.

i draw quite a bit of fan art here. i'm currently suffering from twst brainrot so i apologize for my quite frequent lilia posting (no i will not he is my husband). other fandoms i draw for include cybird's ikemen series, obey me, mysme, she-ra (2018), danganronpa, bee and puppycat, monster high, sailor moon, madoka, P&SwG, pjsekai, bandori, hollow knight, vanitas no carte, vtubers, and several others.
