Stevie McLaughlin/Dominic Harper | 500-something words | Short little thing that struck me last night :) @pressplay-if

“Pretty in this,” you murmur, toying with the hem of Stevie’s flowy blouse.

“Yeah?” She looks down at her outfit, then back to you as though reaffirming. Like she doesn’t know. Like you’re at all in the business of lying to her about anything ever.

You nod, head still a bit cloudy from exhaustion but wanting there to be no confusion. You continue, rubbing the material between your thumb and forefinger. “Stunning. Like an angel, almost.”

You watch her lips part slightly, like the comment takes her off guard. She blinks then—a couple times, actually—long eyelashes fluttering like the beat of butterfly wings and you can practically feel the gears working in her head. She looks at you as if trying to discern something. It’s a thing she does quite a lot and you never really know what she’s looking for, but you always hope she finds it.

She shakes her head then, just once. Not in refutation, but as though she’s snapping out of something.

“Almost an angel?” She tilts her head and tsks, a playfulness shimmering in her eyes now. “Guess I’ve got to try harder.”

Your lip quirks, amused at her response and enjoying having her prolonged and uninterrupted attention. It’s something that’s been fewer and far between these days, at least from your perspective. Maybe that’s just you being greedy. Something about Stevie makes you a little irrational sometimes, a little silly. Makes you want her all to yourself, though you don’t entirely understand what that even means. Perhaps it’s because you feel the way the ground is now constantly shifting beneath your feet. So many things are changing so quickly, it makes you want to cling to what you have. Dig your fingernails in and never let go.

“Only ‘cause you’re not, like, terrifying.” You explain breezily so as to not betray any of your more serious thoughts. You release her blouse, figuring that you ought to at this point. Your eyes catch for a moment on the crystals that hang from her ears and the way they refract some of the afternoon light spilling in from the window to a somewhat magical effect. “I imagine the likeness will be closer later on when Angel or Maddox do something to piss you off.”

She chuckles at this, a short musical sound even though it feels oddly stilted. “You seem to have a lot of confidence in staying on my good side.”

“I do, yeah.” You reply with no elaboration, unblinking eyes focused on her and the inscrutable look she gives at your words before she’s turning back to the mirror—quite suddenly—to fuss with her hair.

You decide to take in her profile now that she’s not looking your way. You don’t know how to have her turn her attention back towards you without begging for it, and that seems a little extreme, so you resolve to simply take her in. She shifts a little, the bout of silence in the room making the low rustling of her clothes seem that much louder. Your gaze roams over her, all the little details. You squint your eyes, catching a bit of movement - her throat bobbing with a swallow as her eyelashes do that pretty fluttering thing again.

You tilt your head, intrigue melting into concern. “Are you—“

“The boys should be there already.” She announces suddenly, turning back to you finally with a bit of breathlessness to her voice. “Are you good to go?”

“I—“ you start, before deciding to let whatever that was fly under the radar. Stevie’s always been a little eccentric. “Yeah, let’s go.”

You know I actually find it rather heartbreaking that Naked Snake believes in Santa Claus and is haunted by Dracula nightmares just by mention. You have to think about it from a developmental standpoint in his brain, he fought in The Korean War in 1950 and he was born in 1935. If math checks out, this’ll make him fifteen years old during the time of the war. It’s sad to think about how when children are made to grow up too fast during these situations because there are aspects of them that seemingly remain untouched and are still childlike in nature (I know the boss literally called him a child in MGS3 but sksjskdj). I find it very likely his earlier childhood in itself had similar elements, which further slowed certain parts of his brain in a sense. Of course I’m still new to this fandom but I have exposed myself to the media, watched six hour long lore videos and have did my best to study the lore while watching through the games/playing them but I realize I may not have the full picture yet. I’ve seen all of three because I just adore Jack but—dhekdjdi
