Laptop Repairs: What Are the Options?
It is a reality that your laptop will fail at some point. When it does, it's essential to know what you, the consumer, can do to help yourself and reduce downtime. If you cannot turn it on, remove the battery and connect it directly to the main outlet via the adaptor. But the best way is to consult a professional at a computer shop. If it starts, it's a faulty battery, which is an easy fix. So many problems I have encountered dealing with the battery. Most of us keep the charger plugged in all the time, which is not a good idea. This will end up destroying the battery. As a rule, let the battery run flat to about 3-5%, then begin the charge cycle again. Once complete, disconnect it, and repeat the process. Your battery will last much longer. If the battery is not the problem, it could be the adaptor. Try running it without the adaptor attached. Replacing the adaptor can fix the problem. These are examples of easy fixes which most consumers can quickly deal with themselves. If both of the above suggestions don't work, it's time to check your receipt to see if your laptop is still under warranty.
Great if it is, not so good if it's not. So what now? A professional would be the best option here because laptops are complicated and complex to repair, and a great deal of skill, knowledge and patience is required to diagnose them properly. There are two types of repairers available. The first is the traditional shopfront computer and laptop repairs shop, or nowadays, the same-day mobile repair services that conveniently come to your house or place of work. They offer professional services just like the shop and have the skills to accurately diagnose on the spot and provide you with an estimate of the cost of repair. Choosing a repairer takes work. I would first speak to a friend or a work colleague and find out if they know someone they have used in the past and were happy with. Qualifications are essential in this industry. A Microsoft certification is always held in high esteem, as is a CompTIA, and even stuff in electronics is handy. These combined will be a good starting point when finding a good repairer. Ask as many questions as necessary. Questions like; Which brands do you service the most? Turnover rate? Qualifications attained? Written quote? Warranty of repair? How long has the repairer been in business? To name a few.
Another option would be to go back to the manufacturer and ask if they have a service centre near you. This type of repair usually is more expensive than a generic repair company, but at least with this option, you know that it will be repaired by the company that made the laptop.
In the end, it always comes down to cost. If a new motherboard or a combination of parts is required, it may not be financially feasible to repair the laptop. In such cases, a new replacement can be cheaper. Do your maths first because if you have to purchase new software licenses, coupled with the cost of a new laptop, the whole exercise becomes a giant money pit.
The outcome should be favourable whether you choose a traditional shop, mobile service, or manufacturer laptop repairs centre. They all want your business, and in this challenging economic climate, the ultimate aim is to keep you coming back.

Choosing the Right Battery for Your Mobile Device
You may be considering replacing your phone if it no longer holds a charge, but a fresh battery may solve your problem first. Although there is a wide range of battery types and models for mobile devices, most devices that use removable batteries have commonalities.
Contact the maker of your phone. Many relevant manufacturers will offer to repair your Cellphone battery for free if it fails whilst under warranty, giving you a dependable spot to get a replacement.
The phone's maker may be able to recommend a reliable battery retailer even if your device is out of warranty.
This process might take a while if your manufacturer's customer support line receives a significant number of calls.
Verify that the cellphone battery in your phone can be removed. If the phone company you called was no help, you'll have to change the battery on your own. In particular, you need to check whether your phone's battery can be removed quickly and easily; most Android phones meet this condition, but iPhone owners may skip through to the "Making a choice a Charger" section.
In most cases, you can access the batteries by pulling a panel off the rear of the phone if your phone has a detachable battery.
When the battery in your iPhone finally gives out, just mail it to an Apple shop and they'll replace it for free. You may avoid spending the money on this procedure by not attempting to extract the battery yourself, which might potentially damage your phone and/or invalidate your warranty.
Discover the model number of your mobile device. You can search for your model number in your user manual if you still have it; otherwise, you may locate it on the back of your phone. Be careful to jot down the model number once you locate it; doing so will greatly facilitate your search for suitable battery replacements.
If you lose the instructions for your gadget, chances are good that you may get a copy online.
Determine the battery's serial number. Depending on the type of your phone, you may be able to discover the serial number written on the rear of the battery; however, you will need to replace the battery to read it. You'll need to remember this data while you look for a suitable battery, so jot it down. The following is some more background you'll find useful:
Power source classification: battery (e.g., Lithium Ion vs. NiCAD).
The date your phone was made.

Heard this morning (27 March, 2023) A transcript for this piece is not yet up. They're usually up in a couple of days.
~3 minute listen.
This one right-to-repair law got through in just one state, because the lawmaker who introduced it narrowed its focus down from "The right of everybody to repair anything" (too many businesses to lobby against that) to "the right of wheelchair users to repair their own wheelchairs."
On the one hand it's great. On the other hand, it's a reminder of how marginalized we are in society.
Next thing to fight for: the right of farmers to repair their own farm equipment.
One state's gotten started. Forty-nine to go...
Transcript is now up. I've put the full thing under the cut.
MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:
Somewhere on your list of life's annoyances is probably this - manufacturers who won't let customers fix products themselves. Some states are pushing back with right-to-repair laws. Andrew Kenney from Colorado Public Radio visited with one of the first people to use a new right-to-repair law for powered wheelchairs.
(SOUNDBITE OF WHEELCHAIR WHIRRING)
ANDREW KENNEY, BYLINE: Bruce Goguen, who's 68, has used his powered wheelchair for so long that it feels like an extension of himself. He has multiple sclerosis, which affects his speech.
BRUCE GOGUEN: I just think of it as legs, as being my legs.
KENNEY: And that means when he got a new chair last year, every detail had to be right, like the speed of its different modes. His wife, Robin Bolduc, says each one of those adjustments required a visit from an authorized technician. It took weeks.
ROBIN BOLDUC: We would have to call someone, make an appointment, have them come out and say, gee, I'd like to change it so we're walking just a little bit faster.
KENNEY: On one of those visits, Robin realized that the technician wasn't using some specialized device to change the settings. It was a smartphone app. She even found it on the App Store, but it was only available for authorized users.
BOLDUC: Well, I want the app. And he was like, you can't have the app. But I want the app.
KENNEY: That would've been the end of the road, except that Robin and Bruce knew that Colorado's new wheelchair right-to-repair to repair law had just gone into effect. Representative Brianna Titone is the sponsor of the new law. Back in 2021, she originally proposed a much broader bill that would've applied to computers, cellphones and more. That meant an uphill fight against lobbyists for everything from hospitals to tech giants.
BRIANNA TITONE: So I did not win that fight. I lost that fight pretty bad. So that's why the following year, we pared it back to the people who really deserve to have this right. And that were the people who were in wheelchairs.
TITONE: The narrower, wheelchair-focused law passed the legislature last year with the help of advocates like Bruce and Robin. Once it went into effect on New Year's Day, Robin called the manufacturer to demand access to their app.
BOLDUC: They were not prepared. Right. Which - understandably, we're the only state. And it was day one, right? So they were not prepared.
KENNEY: In a committee hearing last year, Tonya Hammatt of National Seating and Mobility, a wheelchair vendor, warned state lawmakers that power wheelchairs are too complex for DIY jobs.
(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
TONYA HAMMATT: This bill will allow anyone to perform complex repairs to power wheelchairs, which may lead to negative outcomes for the end user.
KENNEY: But after Robin showed Bruce's wheelchair's maker the text of the law, they agreed, sending out two staffers to get the family set up with the internal software.
BOLDUC: They gave me the code to get into the app. We played around. We programmed.
KENNEY: The couple have been tweaking the wheelchair's different modes, searching for the perfect speed for Robin to jog alongside Bruce or the right settings for a steep walking trail.
GOGUEN: It's wonderful. It's very wonderful.
KENNEY: And their success could have broader effects. They've been told the manufacturer is working on a public-facing app for everyone else who wants to use it. The company didn't respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, right-to-repair laws are gaining momentum around the country, says Kevin O'Reilly of the advocacy group PIRG.
KEVIN O'REILLY: We think that this first bill was the crack in the dam that we needed.
KENNEY: That includes a new bill from Representative Titone that guarantees similar rights for farmers to repair their increasingly high-tech tractors and other equipment. It's poised to clear the state legislature in a matter of weeks. For NPR News, I'm Andrew Kenney.

Snippet from my untitled Blue Beetle & Teen Titans rejects fic :)
Click. Snap. Click. Snap.
They're sat inside a Big Belly Burger, waiting for their order of fries. A female singer he doesn't recognise croons Spanglish over weirdly retro beats on the speakers. Eddie is fidgeting with the catch on his now-useless slider phone, out of nerves or boredom, he doesn't know.
The first thing they did once they got into town was to buy a mobile phone. It's strange, but there aren't many payphones around, and whatever happened to them while they were in the Bleed and subsequently in their fall back to Earth must have fried their cellphones. Luckily, he found one of those rundown stores selling spare electronics for cheap that accepts cash and doesn't ask questions. At least one thing hasn't changed.
Click. Snap. Click. Snap.
The phone they bought is a palm-sized thing with a wide touch-screen, one of those smart-phone models that only came out last year, and yet the store owner seemed almost happy to part with it. "It's ancient," he'd said in a comfortingly thick accent, "I was about to chuck it out with the garbage. I'd sell it to you for free, chiquito." Things only get stranger from there. It took less than a minute for Khaji to jail break the phone and recalibrate itself to the local network. They tried his family's numbers again, even tried the Titans Tower secure line, but no dice. What Jaime found on the internet was even less reassuring.
Click. Snap. Click. Snap.
"Hey, Eddie."
The fidgeting stops.
"Could you go grab us some drinks? I need a minute alone with the scarab."
"Sure...?" Eddie throws another glance at Jaime, not quite hiding his worry as he slides out of his seat.
[ You were vexed by his opening and shutting of his phone case. ]
"I didn't realise it was state the obvious hour."
Khaji Da does not respond. Jaime rubs his temple.
"Sorry, sorry. Yes, I'm stressed. Tell me you have some good news, at least."
[ You are still alive, as is Eddie Bloomberg. You have enough money to acquire sustenance for another week, during which I can help you find a job and — ]
"Khaji. I need to get home."
[ You are technically in your hometown. ]
"But it's not the El Paso I know. Right? Tell me I'm not crazy."
[ Jaime Reyes is correct. Based on our quick search of the government domains, social network platforms and news sites, the Reyes family never lived in El Paso. There is no record of your parents or extended family in the state registry. Your name does not exist in the class registers of your high school. Your sister— ]
"Also doesn't exist! I know! I got it the first time." Jaime looks over to the self-service machine. What is taking Eddie so long? "I asked you for good news, Khaji."
[ Actually, your sister exists. Milagro Reyes, age 18, enrolled in Edge Keys High School. According to her posts on Instagram, she was last seen at the Kord Centre Mall — ]
"Did you say eighteen? And where the heck is Edge Key?"
[ I have some more good news. While there is no record of your other family members in the state of Texas, a Reyes Auto Repair Shop was recently removed from the business registry in Edge Key, Greater Palmera City. ]
"What? We have to go to Edge Key!"
"What's Edge Key?" Eddie sets a tray down, almost spilling the two extra-large cups of soda balanced precariously on it. The fries look tiny in comparison.
"That's what I'm trying to find out. Khaji, can you — hold on, I'm syncing you to the phone so Eddie can see."
The phone lights up, and Jaime expects Khaji's words to crawl across the screen like text messages the way he's done the few times Jaime tried to sync the scarab to his old phone via blue-tooth. Instead, the phone starts talking in a lady computer voice.
"Your scarab was a chick this whole time?" Eddie exclaims, the half-chewed fry in his hand forgotten.
"What? No! I didn't even know it could speak like this."
"I simply utilised this phone's built-in text-to-speech system. It is not my problem that the manufacturers could only imagine AI voices as female."
"I think it just insulted every super-computer in the cape community..."
"Anyway, the coordinates?"
[ There is one last thing you should know before you go, Jaime Reyes. The Blue Beetle was last sighted in Palmera City six hours ago. ]
The boys pause and look at each other.
"Show me, Khaji."
And on the screen of the phone appears a crisp, 4K picture of a guy in a costume that looks exactly like him, mid-flight in the streets of a city he's never been to.

oh gee, may i ask about 10 for arthur and rhys? (or just one of them, whatever you feel ok with!)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
So, two parts for this one 9th century, one 21st.
Arthur, 9th century. He was living mobile and half-feral from the first thaw to the first frost, usually wintering with Rhys, Alasdair or Brighid, who were more settled. Wool cloak, tunic and trousers over underlinens and stockings. Leather belt and boots. Iron seax and iron cloak fastening brooches as a sign of a free but relatively low-status man. Lead celtic cross on a leather cord around his neck. Quiver, arrows and bow of Welsh make. He would have worn a light pack with a bedroll, a spare tunic and a cloak of better weave from Brighid or Rhys. No more than two or three days' worth of bread, cheese and occasionally dried meat at a time. Two water flasks. A few coins. A flint and iron striker. A smaller eating knife, a wooden spoon and a bowl. A couple of small leather bags with herbs, a few leather hare traps and a good length of waxed sailcloth he can lash to a tree as a simple tent tarp. Scissors, awl, needles and thread for clothing repair make up his worldly possessions.
Rhys, 9th century: Living a more settled life farming and fighting in Gwynedd, Rhys was living a significantly less hand-to-mouth existence. His daily wear would have been the same as Arthurs's, dyed in deeper colours because he’s older and more stable. As a skilled and aggressive flyter he’d need to be more prepared for violence. So where he’d be distinct is having chainmail, a helm, their mother’s sword and an early version of padded armour like a gambeson plus a bow more suited for warfare than the lighter hunting and self-defence bow he gave Arthur.
Arthur, 21st Century: This man carries a very bespoke case in formal situations. It might have a laptop pocket, but he dislikes using it. He’s got a very bespoke pen, pencil and highlighting set, and the pen is likely very old-fashioned because he writes like he’s 1200 and just reading Chaucer for the first time. Condoms. Pound notes and pence. Accidentally tries to count some random century-old shillings when he’s drunk, but they’re only in there for good luck. He’s got a cellphone, but he only checks the thing once a day or when Francois or Gabriel sends him dick pics. Probably There’s probably a small folding knife in there. I think he likes the weight of the cross strap on his chest the way he used to wear a Sam Brown belt or, long before that, the strap of his quiver.
Rhys, 21st century: Man’s kind of raw-dogging life. He’s got his phone, a tin of lanolin moisturizer, his wallet with cash, and a knife, but he lives in his head. He’s got a couple of walking sticks for rambling or hill walking, but other than that, it’s just whatever is in his pockets.
#the ask box || probis pateo#rhys || my word for heaven was not yours#arthur || stone set in the silver sea

You would be fucking shocked how often the fact that I used to work for a cellphone company comes up at my banking job. Not in helping non tech savvy clients who are trying to perform a Task at the intersection where finances and the devil's rectangle meet (it does help, but anyone trained for my current job can do at least 70% of what I can there), but in like when branch employees ask some poor clueless old person who fell victim to cybercrime to get their phone cleaned by a technician but didn't take the time to explain what that entails and the client called their cell service provider and instead of the underpaid 28 year old living in their dad's spare room with no driving license, no therapist, no sense of personal agency but plenty of smarts and compassion (that used to be me) they got the underpaid 18 year old doing the same job but with better prospects, fewer fucks given and no life experience who told them their phone is working and doesn't need repair (technically correct but the scummiest and/or most naive possible response) so they had no idea they could go to a licensed technician who works independent of their service provider nor that if they just walk in to the physical store of their provider regardless of what the phone rep said the kiosk employee will be able to factory reset their phone upon request without even needing there to be anything wrong with it, since people factory reset their phones for all kinds of reasons not just when their banking info has been compromised by cyber theft, and now instead of their card and their access to online and mobile banking being frozen for like 3 days it's been frozen for like 3 weeks and they've been using a compromised mobile device the entire time.

The FBI has revealed the alleged motive for four substation attacks in Washington state that cut power for thousands on Christmas Day, yet still no arrests have come a month after electric grid sabotage knocked out power for days for an entire North Carolina county amid nationwide concerns of domestic terrorism.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington announced Tuesday that two men – Matthew Greenwood, 32, and Jeremy Crahan, 40, both of Puyallup – were to appear in Tacoma federal court on the charge of conspiracy to damage energy facilities. Greenwood is also charged with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle and a short-barreled shotgun.
The criminal complaint revealed the alleged motive for the attacks on four substations dozens of miles apart within a 12-hour time frame on Dec. 25, 2022, was to commit a burglary at a business while power was down for some 15,000 customers in the area.
The Department of Homeland Security warned last month that the U.S power grid is vulnerable to domestic terrorism, noting online calls to sabotage critical infrastructure. Officials have not publicly cited domestic terrorism in the Washington case.
TWO WASHINGTON MEN CHARGED IN 4 SUBSTATION ATTACKS ON CHRISTMAS THAT CUT POWER FOR THOUSANDS: FBI
In the early morning hours of Christmas Day, the perimeter chain-link fence was cut to gain entry to the Hemlock substation, operated by Puget Sound Energy. A "bank high side switch" was manipulated, causing an outage for some 8,000 customers. The criminal complaint noted suspects did not steal any copper or cut any wires.
The Elk Plain substation was struck next. Padlocks were cut on the pedestrian gates to gain entry to the substation, where high side breakers were manipulated, causing an outage. The third attack happened at the Graham substation, where a chain-link fence was cut, and high side breakers were manipulated.
The damage on those two substations, both operated by Tacoma Power, was estimated at $3 million and caused outages for 7,500 customers. The complaint notes damage to both "de-energizer taps" for each impacted transformer requires replacement, resulting in up to 36 months' repair time.
Two mobile transformers at each facility now maintain power to customers, and combined output went from 50 megawatts to 15.
Later that evening on Dec. 25, the fourth attack happened at Kapowsin substation, operated by Puget Sound Energy. A chain-link fence was cut to gain entry. According to the complaint, suspects tampered with the bank high side switch and tried to pry the linkage open, causing the substation to start arcing and sparking.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Greenwood stated that he and Crahan "have been planning to disrupt power to commit a burglary," FBI Special Agent Mark Tucher wrote in a probable cause summary. Crahan allegedly drove them both to the first three facilities, acting as the getaway driver while Greenwood entered the substations using bolt cutters provided by Crahan.
Crahan allegedly entered the fourth substation. While the power was out, after the Graham and South Hill attacks, the two went to a local business, where Crahan drilled out a lock, and Greenwood entered to steal from the cash register, Tucher said. The complaint does not name that business.
The FBI said cellphone records placing the suspects at all four substations and surveillance camera footage of one of the suspects and the getaway truck led to the arrests. A search warrant of the trailer where both men lived uncovered an illegally possessed short-barreled rifle with a homemade silencer, the complaint says.
Despite federal prosecutors applauding the FBI’s swift work in securing arrests in the Washington case on New Year's Eve, they acknowledged no suspects have been apprehended in the Dec. 3, 2022, attacks on two substations in Moore County, North Carolina, that left some 45,000 customers without power.
"We are still getting into the facts obviously, we are paying attention to what happened in North Carolina. There have been prior attacks here in the Northwest as well, not just most recently, this is a national problem, but we are still investigating this case and a lot to be determined about the facts," Nick Brown, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington, said Tuesday, according to KOMO.
Authorities said someone or a group drove up to two substations operated by Duke Energy and opened fire, causing extensive damage. The incident is being investigated as a "criminal occurrence." In that case, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office asked for court approval for several search warrants, and the FBI was also looking into cellphone records. The motive remains unclear.
