Adam picks at the label of the bottle of water in front of him, wondering once again if this was a bad idea. His anxiety sits like a lead weight in his stomach and his legs itch to bolt, to run until his lungs are screaming for air. He taps out a tempo on the table, something he eventually learned were the final beats of his heart, staccato and wrong.

He often wondered if the Elite considered the price he'd have to pay for his "miraculous recovery." According to Malakai, they'd been warned, time and time again, but Adam doubted that they cared much about what would happen in his head. They just wanted the friend that they tossed away back, perhaps the guilt had finally eaten away at them. Adam seriously doubted that as well, he watched them back then too and they seemed to act the same as they always had.
