Yesterday [April 30, 2024], a bipartisan collection of US Senators introduced the Fans First Act, which would help address flaws in the current live event ticketing system by increasing transparency in ticket sales, and protecting consumers from fake or dramatically overpriced tickets.

Today, the artists and Congressmen allege, buying a ticket to a concert or sporting event requires negotiating a minefield of predatory practices, such as speculative ticket buying and the use of automated programs to buy large numbers of tickets for resale at inflated prices.

The legislation would ban such practices, and include provisions for guaranteed refunds in the event of a cancellation.

The political campaign organizers, calling themselves “Fix the Tix” write that included among the supporters of the legislation is a coalition of live event industry organizations and professionals, who have formed to advocate on behalf of concertgoers.

This includes a steering committee led by Eventbrite [Note: lol, I'm assuming Eventbrite just signed on to undermine Ticketmaster and for PR purposes] and the National Independent Value Association that’s supported by dozens of artistic unions, independent ticket sellers, and of course, over 250 artists and bands, including Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews, Cyndi Lauper, Lorde, Sia, Train, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, and hundreds more which you can read here.

��Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist or team is out of reach for too many Americans,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

“Bots, hidden fees, and predatory practices are hurting consumers whether they want to catch a home game, an up-and-coming artist, or a major headliner like Taylor Swift or Bad Bunny. I cannot believe that no one bought this elegant little gem of an 1877 2nd Empire townhouse in Minneapolis, MN. It's decorated in grand Baroque style, has 1bd, 2ba, 1,799 sq ft, $989k + $1,029mo. HOA. Maybe it's priced too high? Zillow says it's worth about $935k. The high HOA fee could also be a factor.

Come on, now. NOBODY expects the Baroque Townhouse! Look at the entrance- got some gothic doors, architectural salvage light fixture from a church, and what could be better than a wine rack where you can grab a bottle as soon as you walk thru the door? It also looks like a mini bar. What a way to greet guests.

They really did a lot of work on this place. That's why I think it's priced at almost $1m. The woodwork, alone, is incredible. Look at the delightful dining room that looks like it's under an arbor.

The stairs have murals and carved doors. The home has 3 levels and I can't discern what floors the rooms are on, b/c as usual, the real estate photos are completely mixed up.

Despite the fact that there is NO evidence of immigrant voter fraud, and it is ALREADY illegal to vote in elections for noncitizens, this mess if it becomes law will require ALREADY REGISTERED VOTERS to provide either a valid passport - which only about a third of US adults have - OR a Real ID/equivalent military or federal employee ID AND a birth certificate -to document their citizenship at at the polls.

This idiocy is first of all burdensome, because if you don't have a certified copy of your birth certificate it costs between $20-30 and takes a month to get by mail if you don't have time to go to a vital record processing center during business hours (many people are not gonna be able to get time off to do that, and may not have ready access to a printer and a notary public to send in a request by mail - I'm using MN state requirements here as an example, your state might differ in some particulars). A passport can take MONTHS to be processed, and costs around $200 depending on whether you want a book or card, and whether you have $85 or so to shell out to expedite processing and shipping.

This will of course disproportionately affect

young voters - I mean, a lot of them have never had to interact with a system that doesn't allow you to just put in a credit card number and call it good as opposed to mailing notarized documents,

poor voters/seniors on fixed incomes, for whom time off, travel and administrative fees are a burden when everybody's already feeling the pinch of shameless greedflation

voters with insecure housing situations,

voters who have discrepancies between their birth documentation and state ID (married women, trans people)

It'll also impose a significant increased administrative burden for election commissions and judges (which are already hard to get enough of) , and because that increased paperwork isn't gonna file itself, a considerable unfunded mandate for the states that they don't EXPECT them to be able to absorb easily.

You know what to do. Call/write your senators and let them know in no uncertain terms to knock this shit the fuck off, this is shameless voter suppression in action and if they allow this to get voted into law, they have only themselves to blame if they're unemployed in January. It's unlikely that it'll pass - but unlikely isn't impossible, and this fucking year, I'm not giving it any more chances to screw us over. It's important to make sure your senators and reps know that you do not give a fuck about made-up immigration boogiemen.
