Rules: Make a couple characters (or just one! as many as you want/have time for) from your WIP. Use whatever Picrew suits the vibe best—just make sure to link it. Tag a couple people to do the same.

I used the same template Quo did. This one

im doing this for my murder most unladylike wip which is untitled at the moment , ACTUALLY DONE!!! (also like 4 months ago i forgot i did this) it is called spreading our ashes in the sun and you can check it out of ao3 by clicking on the title just here!

It features my favourite people - the cambridge crew! (specifically Harold and Bertie) [includes exam mental breakdown and tea]

now this fic takes place right after an exam and like in the 1930s (technically, I did my best) so theres not much room for fun costumes and such so ill be making two versions . 1 - as in how they appear in fic and 2- another version which is just how the characters mentally would dress (excluding stephen and alfred which only have the latter) (i have included analysis to go along with the picrews as well)

this is going to be long bc i like extracting meaning from the smallest things and like referencing my fic obvi so its under the cut!! also spoilers for the fic as well

Harold

Harold has not thought of changing his clothing since coming out of that exam, he is only clenching his teeth so hard it might explode which is why he is wearing a plain jumper over a shirt. the circular glasses are the most south asian thing ever (for me at least) , so thats a reference to that. he is very much trying very hard not to express his emotions, because he knows in the grand scheme of things it is only a "small issue" it doesnt really matter , the past is in the past and he should be done with it. but really he cannot stop thinking about it (shown through how there are stars in the background like explosions you can say but are faint). the white i think was also a reference to the "hot white breathe" of panic. green in regards to this references bile. he is somewhat disgusted with himself i think, and also haven't not eaten his stomach is not feeling great. the scars i think were references to his "night climbing" pasttime , but also in my notes i mention a doorway - who knows what that was about but.

feeling picrew

HE IS EXHAUSTED that is the crux. he is mentally lying on his bed , drifting and then crying into his pillow and curling into his blanket. i always imagine harold with frog-esque things becuase he is very cottage core to me (and also like part of the me thinks he really loves the creatures living in the bottom of the garden), (also gardening is a theme within the family ala my bad gardener george headcanon ,as those on the discord know) . but on another level it is also Harold trying to cling onto comfort, which he cannot get in the actual fic , because he is denying himself it. the scars on his face match up with the actual fic version , his hair is messier from mushing his face into a pillow and he is wearing a cardigan because i think of him as a knitter or that sort of craft aligned and when he is stressed he creates clothing (but thats technically not in this). there was additional purpose behind the sepia filter as well, that i cannot remember at the moment. but right now it reminds me of how harold feels somewhat like a faded photograph destined to a dusty cupboard past his prime (as i say in the additional tags it is much like the outro of olivia rodrigo's teenage dream - "they all say that it gets better/ it gets better the more you grow/ they all say it gets better/ it gets better but what if i dont?")

Bertie

Bertie here is trying to give a comforting smile at Harold, however his smile is wobbly, becuase he has also have other things on his mind (reeling from a letter from stephen, terrifed of hurting harold and on another level making him more upset (its bc of stephen) but also just being "urgently concerned" , bertie is full of multitudes). this is also referenced by the background in which according to my old notes before finishing this fic is a reference to now Bertie is also exploding with emotion , except with worry instead of panic.

with new eyes however , i think it also reflects how Bertie is also hiding his emotions as well (colour choice to me blends into the background more) because he is so focused on the task at hand, it is natural to him that his other emotions are set to the side in the background so to speak.

onto more miscellaneous details

-he has a scrape across the mouth from a childhood accident and has a cut across his cheek from his shared night climbing pastime. ---he also has sticky outy ears because i say so -he has the twinkle in his eyes because it is goddam Bertie Wells and he is full of charm and charisma, it is the same twinkle somewhat of the one that Felix, his uncle is reported to have. (he has been trying for years to have it , he has not noticed he kind of already does. nobody has told him)

another note: the green is bertie colour (because his "green trousers" and the blue harold but they have each others because they care for oneanother alot and are focusing on the others concern . harold feels like a very blue person to me (also besties)

feeling picrew

literally not much here other than a more visual manifestation of what he is actually feeling. background is darker bc he has also the holdover from being whipped up wiht emotion since reading the letter form stephen. brighter stars is a "fizzing like a rocket" reference

the moustache change is an oversight, but now i like to think that its a manifestation of how much he feels like hes aged since the events of arsenic for tea and his relationship with stephen (this is like literally pulling stuff out of nothing but like still). the heart breaking , kinda goes two ways: breaking for harold as shown in the fic and also somewhat breaking from stephens letter (also referenced through the picrew through the shooting stars on his shirt like their relationship which was actively not really healthy, and very quickly crashing and burnt through)

although that isnt explicitly shown throughout the fic i did want Bertie's inner turmoil to be an undercurrent throughout.

the pjama shirt according to my old notes has soemthing to do with how raw Bertie is feeling throughout the fic besides him just being worn

Stephen

Stephen is interesting, as although he's very much explicitly not in the fic he is very much guides Bertie's actions throughout. i honestly dont know why i decided to create him as a picrew as he isnt in the fic but i guess i wanted 4 picrews.

background is a grid bc mans in JAIL LIKE HE DESERVES.

hair is two coloured because i always thought stephen with black hair but the in the books hes got brown? so now hes got two coloured hair bc i wanted to pay homage to that.

stephen was always the type of person to be somewhat perpetually upset with Bertie or actually something or rather , and in Bertie's mind that is the image that is left of him, which is why he looks like hes sulking.

he's sweating because he actually does feel quite guilty and Bertie cannot find in himself a way to fully hold a grudge against him at least thats what it says in my old notes

now, i actually have no idea why he would be sweating maybe prison is hot

clothing - couldnt find prision clothes and wanted some sort of variation so orange on orange is what you get

Alfred

i have no notes post this point so we are in the vast deadlands now.

jacket literally just feels like a jacket alfred would wear in a modern au, same with the shirt also the eyebrow he would have a slit eyebrow

the heart i think is something to do with the fact that alfred actually really cares for harold (whether harold knows it or not)

only thing i truely remember is for the spotlight background its yellow because he's the one who goes "why the hell are you in the dark" and makes them turn on the light

CHRISSY COSTANZA & VOILÀ: THE SPIN THE BOTTLE TOUR

A little late but here we are, my last concert of the year! I couldn’t be happier that it was VOILÀ alongside Chrissy Costanza on the sold out UK/EU leg of the Spin The Bottle Tour. I don’t think I’ve fallen for a band as hard or as fast as I did for these guys. The completely independent rock duo, based in the US, have been on my radar for quite a while, however I only started listening to their music properly earlier this year, as a soundtrack to my A Level revision. It’s safe to say I was hooked immediately, I haven't stopped listening to them since.

The Spin The Bottle tour was probably the concert I was looking forward to most this year. Undoubtedly, when I booked the ticket I was a fan of VOILÀ more so than Chrissy, and I still am, but she’s become a more permanent part of my listening rotation now too. Manchester is an iconic city in the rock music genre, not to mention this was my first concert at Manchester Academy. Ironically, the building Academy is in is the University of Manchester Student Union building and as an MMU student I couldn’t help but feel like an imposter.

As a co-headline tour, the two acts didn’t have a changeover, instead Chrissy & Gus (VOILÀ’s lead singer) switched back and forth for segments of the show, with Luke (VOILÀ’s lead singer) and a drummer onstage throughout the whole hour and a half set. The opening song was a collaboration between the two acts, ‘Caught It’ which is on VOILÀ’s 3rd album, and then closes with another collab ‘Seven Minutes In Hell’, from Chrissy’s ‘VII’ EP (a personal favourite of mine).

Chrissy Costanza is best known as the frontwoman of the American pop-rock band Against The Current. The band were named a Rock Sound 25 Icon this year as a part of the magazine’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Her debut solo EP ‘VII’ was released earlier this year and this tour marked her first (co-)headline shows. And she absolutely killed it, Chrissy clearly belongs on stage. Every song was given 110%, her energy was infectious.

Alongside her solo songs, Chrissy performed one ATC song (wildfire) as well as songs she has recorded for the League Of Legends video game soundtrack. This particular niche type of songs are a personal favourite of mine, with driven basslines and a musical storyline creafted by expert instrumentation behind powerful vocals. She also performed an acoustic medley of songs that have meant a lot to her over the years. As the frontwoman of a touring band, Costanza has experience playing shows in the UK, and several times during the set she hyped up Manchester as a home-away-from-home & her favourite UK city, of course the crowd went feral at this and kept up with her energy the entire show. 

VOILÀ are a Los Angeles-based pop-rock duo with lead singer Gus Ross moving over from the UK, and guitarist Luke Eisener hailing from Wisconsin. This tour is the band’s first, and it’s clear to everyone that both members of the band having their first hometown shows on the same tour was something special that they’ll never forget. As I said before, I haven’t fallen for a band as quickly as I have for VOILÀ, and I’ve also never become a fan of a band and seen them live this fast before. Every one of their albums is a detailed piece of work that ties together beautifully whilst also having numerous tracks that stand out from others, perfectly encapsulating their take on the pop-rock genre. I love that they are an entirely independent organisation, self-producing all of their releases and heavily involved with their fans too. In the lead up to the show, I met so many amazing people on their discord server and was able to meet most of them at a pre-show hang just before the gig too.

With this being their first tour, the setlist was something that fans discussed in detail before the tour started as they already had 2 1/2 albums released and the rest of the 3rd has been released since. The second half of their third album ‘Glass Half Empty’ was released the day before the London Show, which was also the final UK date of tour.

Due to this, cuts had to be made and some songs were sacrificed, but the band made up for it by introducing a surprise song. Taking inspiration from the tour’s name, they had a wheel they would get someone to spin every night and play the song it landed on - whether it was a Chrissy song or a VOILÀ one was all up to chance.

The first (and only) song that played after the set ended was South Arcade’s ‘Stone Cold Summer’. South Arcade are another of my favourite bands, and I’ve seen them a few times too. Funnily enough, I’m seeing them at this exact venue next year. There was also a post-show meet & greet, for the discord crew and a select few, thanks to one of the band’s crew members, Sutton. He was able to get both VOILÀ & Chrissy to come back out into the venue hall and give a brief meet & greet session. Security was quite tight about getting us out, so we took pictures in groups and I didn’t get to give them my usual spiel as a music production/live sound enthusiast. However, they were able to sign the door times I pulled off the wall as well as my art cards that I designed and printed for the band’s 2022 release ‘Happy Never After’. They each signed their favourite song on the album with Gus signing ‘Cursive’, an explosive collaboration with Kellin Quinn of the iconic American rock band ‘Sleeping With Sirens’ and Luke signing ‘Hush Now’, one of my personal favourites as well, heavily inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Sutton also gave us some spare packs of trading cards that were available at the merch desk (I ended up buying another one anyway) that we all opened and discussed, as well as hanging out after security kicked us out of the room. Trading Cards were something I’ve never seen before at a concert and I think it’s a really cool idea. Cards ranged from common ones like songs, albums & videos, to rarer ones like certain well-known crew members (including Sutton himself) & access to exclusive content.

Even though I spent way too much money on merch, I don’t regret it at all. I met so many amazing people and was introduced to such a welcoming and inclusive community, that it sometimes feels like a dream - I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Six months ago I had never heard any of these songs, but now they’re my favourites. Every single one of their songs means so much and hearing them live is something I’ll remember forever. Here’s to another year of concerts!

Kirika: I can't believe it, I didn't think we'd end up out in the cold again......

Tsubasa: Oi, you two. What seems to be the matter?

Kirika: Tsubasa-san, Chris-senpai! Actually, what went down was......

Shirabe: Ah......

Chris: The hell? So your water tank broke open?

Tsubasa: So it was collateral damage from that recent battle?

Shirabe: Thanks to that, our place is completely drenched.

Kirika: We can't even sleep because of the heavy flooding coming from the ceiling......

Tsubasa: In that case, you should stay with me. The least I can do is give you a place to stay until your own is put in order.

Kirika: Whoa, that's our Tsubasa-san! So reliable!

Shirabe: We're very thankful.

Tsubasa: What's the matter, Yukine?

Chris: As their senior, I can't keep quiet! My place has just as much room for you to stay in! Come stay with me!

Shirabe: That's an attractive proposal......

Tsubasa: You would go that far? Above all that, isn't temptation unfair?

Chris: Says who? The ends justify the means, and in the end, they'll be coming with me!

Tsubasa. Hrmph. Sweets will - fatten you up.

Kirika: Ah!

Shirabe: Now that you mention it, even Maria's been extremely fixated on the bathroom scale recently......

Tsubasa: You won't need to worry about that at my place. I'll treat you perfectly, from physical conditioning to nutrition.

Chris: Tch, can you call that temptation, or is this just intimidation......!?

Tsubasa: And then, ah...... as a matter of fact, I was thinking I might like to get sushi for dinner tonight-

Kirika: Su, sushi!? Uh, but even the ones that are this tiny cost 100 yen for two!

Shirabe: Th, this is overflowing luxury......!

Tsubasa: No, it's just catering from a sushi chef I know well...... ah, I can assure you of the flavor.

Kirika: I had a kinda outrageous hunch it was a top artist's sushi chef friend.

Shirabe: Mhm, the two of us might perish in an explosion of flavor......

Chris: You're the one who's pretty unfair, huh!

Tsubasa: It's not like that, it's merely hospitality for guests.

Chris: Well, if so, I'll make you two, uh, some top-notch spaghetti......

Tsubasa: Let's add some snow crab to that.

Chris: Dammit! Anyways, c'mon!

Kirika: Aah!?

Tsubasa: You'll be coming with me!

Shirabe: No, what I've heard is that you're not very good at cleaning up, and that your room's always a big mess, so......

Tsubasa: It's nothing like that. The soul of a sword is as clear as a polished mirror and serene as still water. One must not hold even an iota of disorder in one's heart, or in one's living room.

Shirabe: Umm, but there's a note here: "I cleaned up for you. -Ogawa"

Tsubasa: Tch- I've failed!

Tsubasa: Very well. As promised, let's have some sushi.

Shirabe: Please wait! If I indulge, it won't be with Kiri-chan...... I'm sorry.

Tsubasa: ......very well. I understand.

Tsubasa: Well then, the next time you two come over, I promise that we'll have sushi.

Shirabe: I'm sorry for being so selfish. Thank you so much.

Tsubasa: No, it's me who wasn't mature. I apologize.

Tsubasa: But what shall we do about tonight's dinner?

Shirabe: In return for providing me with a place to stay, please let me make dinner.

Tsubasa: That sort of thanks isn't necessary...... but if that will put you at ease, Tsukuyomi, please do.

Shirabe: Okay.

Shirabe: Thank you for waiting. I made it out of whatever was on hand, so it's pretty simple, but...

Tsubasa: Th, this is......! To think you could make something this amazing, with only leftovers from the refrigerator......!

Shirabe: When I was under Mom's supervision, we took turns with playing cook.

Tsubasa: I've spent all my time honing my blade, so I can hardly do any housework. Seeing this masterpiece makes me ashamed of my inability......!

Shirabe: There, there, please don't be discouraged......

Tsubasa: Such regret......!

Tsubasa: Are you sure you don't mind using the futon?

Shirabe: It's alright. Please, don't worry about taking the bed.

Tsubasa. Very well. I shall gladly do so, then.

Shirabe: Alright. Thank you very much for everything today.

Tsubasa: It wasn't much. Anyways, shall I turn off the light?

Shirabe: Please do; good night.

Tsubasa: Ah, sleep well.

Tsubasa: (............)

Tsubasa: (To think I'd be reminded of my own weakness in a time like this......)

Tsubasa: (............)

Tsubasa: Mmmph...... something hurts-

Tsubasa: Tsukuyomi!? Why are you in my bed!?

Shirabe: Mm.... munya......

Tsubasa: Is she still half-asleep......?

Shirabe: Mmu, m...... Maria, Kiri-chan...... I wish we could've given Mom some sushi, too......

Tsubasa: -it must be sleep-talking. Though, with an embrace this strong, I can't help being unable to sleep.

Shirabe: Don't..... don't leave me behind...... It's lonely by myself......

Tsubasa: ......

Tsubasa: I can't bring myself to wake her up. Hm, every now and then, this sort of thing is fine.

Shirabe: Kiri-chan......

Tsubasa: The way she's burying her face in my chest...... it's so cute.

Shirabe: Mm, somehow this cushion isn't enough......

Tsubasa: ! How did Tsukuyomi, of all people, give me a simple shock......!?

Kirika: Shirabe-! At last, at last, we're back together......!

Shirabe: Kiri-chan......!

Tsubasa: They were only apart for a night, but they're already like this.

Chris: So, ah, sorry about yesterday. I was being too proud......

Tsubasa: Seeing those two, I came to realize I was acting strangely.

Chris: Yeah, me too.

Tsubasa: The next time this happens, let's take turns with regards to whose residence everyone stays at.

Chris: Y, you'll come over too!? Why's that?

Tsubasa: Will it be an issue?

Chris: Nah, not really- it...... won't be a problem, but......

Tsubasa: (Now that I think of it, Tsukuyomi was..... saying something about a cushion last night.)

Kirika: Hm? What's up?

Tsubasa: ......tch!

Kirika: Wh, what is it!?

Tsubasa: She's quite developed- and even Yukine......!

Chris: What's the matter?

Tsubasa: ......this anguish is something you can't understand, Yukine!
