At the wire, my #memademay! I hand sewed(no machine!) these #citygymshorts in spare moments over the past couple of days; they're not only the first indulgent project I've done in years, but my first sewing project(hand OR machine) since I was a teenager. The lower right picture is the elastic I used for the waist. It's so fancy looking, but it was the only thing I could find! I hated having to hide it, all sewn in to the waistband. The upper right is a close-up of my handsewn backstitch, I think it's pretty decent. The shirt is a thrift find, and I wore this combo all day; it's kind of a perfect Singapore errands-and-coffee-and-beers outfit. . . . #mmmay16 #purlsoho #handsewn #memade

Me Made May is an event created by Zoe from So Zo… ‘What do you know?’ to encourage people to wear the clothes they make, whether this is through knitting, crocheting, sewing, weaving, etc. It’s designed to motivate crafters to celebrate their achievements and confront any perfectionistic thoughts which may be keeping some garments in the back of the wardrobe!
There’s no pressure to wear something everyday, or to charter your progress through social media. The challenge is an individual one set by you.
I didn’t officially sign up this year (mainly because I didn’t read the post properly to see that you needed to add a comment to sign up) but went along with it anyway. The challenge I found with #mmmay16 was that I have made a lot of summery dresses and May in the UK this year has been quite cold at times! I did set an achievable goal – to wear something me made on a couple of days each week in May – but I found that the most versatile garment in my me made wardrobe is the knitted cardigan I made 3 years ago in double knit weight yarn!
The second garment I wore the most was the top I made as part of #miymarch16 for the knit material day. This top was great as I could layer it up depending on the weather!
Other items I wore was the dress I made during #miymarch16 and the wrap skirt, which was good for the warmer days of the month!
This challenge has made me reflect on the type of garments I make. I can see that although it took a good couple of months to make my knitted cardigan, the pattern was a good one and I wear it a lot. Also, I have tended to stick to simpler patterns with easy to use fabrics which are more suitable for hot summer days in my dressmaking experience.
As a result, it looks like I need to diversify my dressmaking challenges. here are the ways I am going to do this:
Make more tops in knit materials
Make more tops in specially selected materials
Make more items for all year or in particular Autumn, Winter and Spring
Learn to make fitted trousers
Make more knitted cardigans!
It will be interesting to take part next year and see if there’s any progression!

Me Made May last Round up.
These are the last three dresses I wore for me made May. The first two worn for the first time and the last one an early dress that I made.
Got nice compliments for both my new dresses at work, so that’s always nice and a few people are getting to know that I make my own things :).

Day 29: windy walk! Wearing a @colettepatterns #zinniaskirt in black eyelet. What I did: shortened the skirt several inches and cut it from a diamond-patterned black eyelet, lined in a cream cotton/silk. Then I cut the scallop border from a different eyelet and attached that at the bottom (no lining). I used to feel like full skirts were really unflattering on me and I always felt too fluffy and uncomfortable in them. But now I love them, especially long pleated ones like this. @svenclogs #svenclogs #clogs @saraimitnick . #mmm2016 #memademay #mmmay16

Me Made May 2016, Weeks 2-3: Distracted
Boy, does the time fly! What happened to Week 2? I know what happened -- I got distracted by spinning. I’m completely obsessed with this combo spin I’ve been working on. It’ll eventually become a wearable item but not this month. I did manage to cut out pattern pieces for two tunics in Week 2, though.
Week 3, I got one of them sewn up. It’s a really simple medium-gray raglan tunic. The original pattern is for a sweater-length garment but I added a about 10-15 cm to the hem. There wasn’t enough fabric for full-length sleeves so I settled for 3/4-length instead.
On Textillia: Basic Gray
Pattern: V. Raglanpaita from Joka tyypin kaavakirja (2006)
Fabric: Medium-gray french terry, approx. 1.0 m
Mods: Tunic length, 3/4-length sleeves, turned neckline (no band)
Oh yeah, Week 2 I discovered Textillia! I’m on there as Talvi -- join up and friend me!

Me Made May round up part 2. What did I find out? Well I know I definitely have enough me made clothes to get me through a month of work without any repeats and have some more to spare. And with all this sewing I will be heading for 2 months worth!! My sewing is definitely getting better, I don’t have so many items finished but never worn because of fabric problems, sewing issues or mistakes, just the odd one where I experimented, but mistakes are where you learn the most right? (Can you tell I’m a teacher?!) I still have some unfinished items, should bake sure and finish these before I get bored and move on! Must finish that floral net circle skirt and chiffon navy bow dress!
