I'm home sick from work so I spent the morning rewatching Islam Makhachev vs Arman Tsarukyan 1 and it's sooooo good. So I cut together a bunch of clips from the fight that I enjoyed.
Labeled the clips in the top left corner.
For as great as Islam's double and single games are, I think his ability to set up trips and throws in tie ups isn't talked enough about. In clip 1, Islam and Arman are chest to chest with underhooks on opposing sides. Neither is super deep but they are putting their weight on one another. Islam's punches and knees to the body bother Arman so much that he reaches across his body from the underhook side to defend. Islam grabs the palm pulls it across as he twists and kicks the leg out. He trips Arman down to the floor and instantly gets to mount.
I think Tsarukyan hit on something that a lot of Team Khabib opponents miss out on - you have to actually grapple with these guys once you get them down. If you're going to go defensive or try to give your back, they're entire games are geared towards exploiting that. So instead of turning and trying to build up, Tsarukyan works on free his legs from Islam's bind and gets to butterfly guard. He elevates with both, throwing Islam off balance and then elevates again with his right leg to exploit his overhook and get out to the side. He's able to build back up to his feet (albeit into head control from Islam).
Back in chest to chest, Islam is having more success pinning Arman on the cage. After trying to sneak out his underhook side, Arman gets real low baiting the knee from Islam. Islam obliges and throws it to the head only for Arman to instantly underhook the leg and turn him. From there Arman is able to fight Islam to the mat and get his back for the 2.
Makhachev goes back to head and arm control. He's got Arman pinned to his chest and is trying to drag him flat so he can run around to the back. Arman instead uses his trapped arm to pull Islam's elbow closer to the center so he can pull his head out (sucker drag). He then pops Islam as he tries to exit the tie up.
Arman does a much better job after clip 1 of defending in the chest to chest lock ups. He attacks with knees with his left leg and doesn't reach across to defend as often. He's keeping a much stronger stance. But here he tries to swim to Islam's back by reaching over (I cut out the offense before this, my bad). It leaves the left side of his body open, so he raises up his left leg to defend. Islam instantly goes back to the trip, kicking out Arman's planted leg. Arman is able to defend enough to get back up and Islam turns it to a single leg then pushes Arman to the fence where he eventually gets him down.
Octopus guard! After fighting for a kimura (right after clip 5), Arman is back on the bottom. Islam is able to pass out of Arman's guard, avoiding the butterfly hook. Instead of trying to immediately build up to an underhook or go to all fours, Arman opts to turn completely into Makhachev. Makhachev, being the wrestler that he is steps back into half guard but Arman is completely on his side. Islam's hips are up too high because of this as he tries to flatten Arman out. He tries to use a punch to pressure Arman's head to the mat but Arman uses it instead to sit up. He reaches through Islam's leg with one hand as he posts with the other. This creates space and he's able to get his legs underneath him so he can build up to attack his own takedown.
Left out the entire 3rd round cause it was mostly Islam taking advantage of the fact Arman was so tired he could only invest in one big move at a time (guillotines to fend off takedowns, giving his back to try to get up, etc). Also still sick. But this was a really great one. Really adds perspective for folks looking to gameplan against Islam. For as amazing as a wrestler as he is, being on the ground with him does not have to be a death sentence.

Honest question, how many different kinds of martial arts does Neil know/is practiced in? I know he's done stunt work as well, but I was also curious about his martial arts as well. He's such an awesome, hard-working and genuinely good person, and I really admire him.
As far as we know from Neil, he's definitely trained in Karate and of course Mixed Martial Arts!
His imdb bio cites a lot of different schools of martial arts, but it also claims he was goalkeeper in school and "loves football", so I wouldn't put too much trust in that as a source.

Rules (short version: imagine this is the actual UFC):
No weapons
No outside help
No special powers
Let me emphasize this…COMPLETELY DEPOWERED
This is not a fight to the death
There are rules in place, so fighters can’t just go crazy and try to kill their opponent
(To get you in the mood for the vote, listen to this:)

Firecracker (Naked Fist, 1981)
"Well, what do you think?"
"Uh..."
"I mean, is this the kind of thing that you think you might be interested in trying?"
"Frankly, I don't think it's something I want to get involved with."
"A true fighter fights to kill. Otherwise, it's only a game."
