the merfolk in my world don't come up very often, but they do exist! the freshwater merfolk herd large schools of salmon upriver every year, letting the wild ones go where they please but keeping their personal schools in larger rivers and bringing them to lakes near land dwelling communities to spawn. By guiding the salmon in this manner, they are able to harvest a good number of them before the rot sets in and trade fish for other things. the interaction between merfolk and land dwelling folk is one of the main reasons sign language has become so common internationally.
