Comment I just posted on the MLP Facebook page’s reveal of Sunny Starscout and Izzy Moonbow:
Wow, it’s weird to have a pony with an actual human name!! It’s a shame to see G4 finally be completely phased out, but I felt the same way about G3 (which I grew up with), and G4 surprised me with how amazing it was! I hope to be just as pleasantly surprised with G5!
I’m really liking what I’m seeing so far of the movie, but time will tell when it comes to the toys. So far, from what’s been leaked, I’m really not a fan of the facial sculpts. But these are also the very first toys of the generation, so I understand that they’re still working out the kinks.
My main hope for this generation: more diversity in the toy line, for one. Gens 1-3 had SO MANY different ponies!! You’d NEVER get bored by the broad expanse of characters!! But with G4, they mainly just focused on the Mane 6, which, while understandable from a marketability standpoint regarding kids’ interest in the main characters, left a lot to be desired from a collectability and diversity standpoint. If you’ve got one Rainbow Dash, you’ve essentially got them all. There were only minor differences, like size of the figure or accessories included. I stuck with just getting the Fashion Style ponies, and I was happy with that. (I was still a kid when G4, but I was in middle school when it first came out, so I do admit I know wasn’t exactly the target audience.)
But with G3? Back before my mom pressured me to donate my collection as a kid (sadly we have very limited storage space in our house, so it was kind of a necessity), I had SO MANY different ponies!! I had ENDLESS stories I came up with for them!! Most of them featured the same cast of my favorites with the backstories I invented for them: Minty, who was my all-time favorite and who usually served as the main character, Wisteria, who was the shy, reserved one, Kimono, her more outgoing, fashion-minded sister, Applejack, the outdoorsy one, Moondancer, who was relaxed and low-key, and Sparkleworks, who was the easily excitable firecracker of the group. Cotton Candy also made frequent appearances as the cafe owner, of course. But the great thing was that I wasn’t limited to just them, nor were they even the “main characters” of G3. I had options. I wasn’t restricted to the same 6 ponies over and over again. And I want that same kind of diversity of the character lineup for kids enjoying MLP today.
My other hope for G5? That Minty will make a return, either as a character in the series or in the toy line. Is that silly of me? Maybe. But I just adore Minty. She was my first ever pony, and I love her to pieces. I even have a small collection of Mintys. I still need to find myself one of the G4 brushable Mintys!! I hated that she came in a big pack of other ponies, bc I only really wanted Minty and couldn’t really afford the big pack. Hopefully eBay will serve me well in my search.
Total ramble, and I doubt anyone will read this to completion, but I’m just super stoked to see where this next gen of MLP takes us!!
