In my garden there is a good deal of toads (good!). When it rains, they like get out of wherever they usually are and stand on the walkway getting soaked in the rain (good!). Unfortunately, when it's night I'm afraid I might step on one of them standing stupidly in the walkway (bad!!): is it enough for me to loudly thump my feet on the ground to scare them away? I know this works for lizards but toads seem to be much more stubborn.
To my knowledge this will not work for toads. They are, as you say, stubborn. My only recommendation is to get a decent torch, or get a waterproof cover for your phone and use its torch, and make sure you can see the toads so that you can be careful to not step on them.
#toads#animals#frogs#biology#baby toads are SO often killed by pedestrians and vehicles#but they are true R strategists so the population is still okay#but it is rough out there for a toadlet#answers by Mark#mlem-wooloowoo

re: Italians sending recommendations
Padova has a very nice medieval city centre, and I really recommend a tour in the "Burchiello" boat on the Brenta river. It's a very beautiful spot and you get to see the beautiful summer villas of the Venetian aristocrats. I think you can travel all the way from Padua to Venice with that tour.
Hi! This is about this post. Because these days it's taking me ages to get to answer asks XD
I'm taking notes, and thank you very much!
I'd also be interested in places that aren't necessarily cities or relatively big/important towns?

Hi Calliope :3 I have a question I want to ask people who use it/its pronouns: how do you feel about "It" and "Its" being capitalized in writing to remove ambiguities and show they're referring to a person? I'm not a native speaker and I feel it would help make language more understandable while also respecting the pronoun choice, but it's just an idea I had and I don't know anyone who uses it/its irl
In case you want to answer, thank you for your time! Have a nice day!✨
Honestly, that’s not too bad of an idea. It/its pronouns are hard to understand even for native speakers (not just in a transphobic way, just the fact that “it” can refer to many things and adding “person” to that can be really confusing). When it comes to talking online I think that that could work pretty well.

These last 24 hours were quite intense, but at least I got my account back :’)
Also my “I’m back!” post was apparently the 100th so I got the badge for it, which I personally find HILARIOUS

I'm not super into boiled eggs, but for a lot of people cooking and eating an egg is like a religious ceremony first thing in the morning (compare coffee enthusiasts). and it has to be 100% perfect exactly the way they like it.
of course i have an egg cooker, i am not a barbarian. they even make them for single households:
(granted, even germans make fun of this one)
an egg cup is just the reasonable conclusion of this obsession: you can maximize eggy enjoyment by taking small shallow spoonfulls. and maybe pour a shitton of salt on it between bites
corded egg slicer? needed for salads & appetizers. if you're the kind of person who likes slices of boiled egg
regarding the egg cozy - there's a lengthy wikipedia page - and it does get used. think of the poor person sleeping in who might otherwise have to eat a completely cooled egg?
HOWEVER i do balk at using any kind of tool to cut off the top of an egg, not even a knife. instead you politely knock on top of the more pointed side (the side with the air cell gets poked and put down in the egg cup) and gently peel. be one with the egg
also, see the tiny salt shaker? everyone gets one so they may eat their frühstück eggs synchronously without having to fight over the salt

I was tagged by my lovely friend @mlem-wooloowoo to do a thing! Thanks!
List 5 songs you like to listen to then tag some folks to play along!
1. Vienna by Billy Joel. Very relatable, very comforting, it got me through some pretty stressful times back in uni. Sometimes you just need a soft piano and a warm voice reminding you that It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two.
2. Cirano by Francesco Guccini, especially the live version bc it conveys so much emotion. As for why, well, I'm a Cyrano girlie, no surprise there. Fave lyrics: le verità cercate / per terra, da maiali, / tenetevi le ghiande / lasciatemi le ali and that last Per sempre tuo, per sempre tuo, per sempre tuo that gives me shivers every single time.
3. L'espantaocells by El Pony Pisador. The first time I heard it my phone looped it automatically and it triggered my tavern wench reflex so bad I woke up an hour later having done all my chores. The fact that I do not understand the lyrics probably adds to the hypnotic effect. As we way back home, provare per credere.
4. Lucky by Donna Murphy. Once you get past the cognitive dissonance of hearing Mother Gothel sing a genuinely sweet, longing lullaby, it's great! Fave lyrics: Lucky / the people who have you / in their lives / to kiss goodnight / to wake with the light / I hope those people realize / they're lucky.
5. Inkpot Gods by The Amazing Devil. This is just an all-around great song, it packs power both in the sound and in the lyrics, it might punch you straight in the soul and/or give you a nice warm hug and tell you you've got this. Fave lyrics: And what you see is not the dark / it's just the gods upturning inkpots / cause they know what you'll become and the ever-impactful, ever-relatable Cause I'm more than what my mum told me to be.
This was surprisingly difficult but a lot of fun! I'm tagging @ninadove @flussoperpetuo @set-wingedwarrior @mayjuvac @mayapleiades @purple-hades and anyone else who feels like playing along (in which case do tag me, I love discovering new music!)

Hey would you look at that, a tag game I didn't forget to participate in! Thank you @mlem-wooloowoo :)
Last song: béke by Azahriah (and others) Title means "peace", it's in hunglish and it's very catchy and very hungarian and a fuck you to our politics and it's real rebel music, it makes my heart utterly happy that this song became this popular
Last film: The Pale Blue Eyes (not good but not entirely bad either, it's meh I guess, or maybe I was just too tired to really appreciate it, but it was something to watch)
Currently watching: Ghost Files, probably? I have several TV shows I guess I could say "I'm watching", in the sense that I watch an episode or two every 3-6 months...
Currently reading: The Locked Tomb series, I'm on Harrow the Ninth, and I love it and I have no idea what's happening even though I've read so many spoilers :) (I'm also currently reading 4 other books as well, including LoTR, again...)
Current obsession: definitely not the locked tomb series :) And I'm gonna go ahead and mention baking, because oh man, have you seen what wonders one can do with just a bit of flour and yeast? How could one not be obsessed! I love baking so freaking much
Tagging to catch up with some of yall newer (or older) obsessions @silverquillsideas @lizziedoesvetpath @doktorwhat @movioletta @amongthesebarrencrags @fencingthings :)
(and if anyone else feels like sharing please please tag me, I love seeing your obsessions it gives me new ideas)
#tag game#oh look at that i actually did a tag game#i love these thanks for tagging me#i just always forget to answer...

@caromitpunkt thank you for tagging me!
Tag game!
1. Are you named after anyone?
Nope. My parents didn’t even think about the meaning of names, just how they sounded.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Within the last few days i guess. I usually need cathartic media to cry.
3. Do you have kids?
No, and no matter how disappointed genealogy/local history obsessed child me would be, I won’t have children in the shortening time frame there still is for that. And I genuinely think that is for the best!
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
I suppose (though more of a dry humor type). But I often struggle to tell whether others do.
5. What sports do you play/have you played?
I was the small and sickly child who for some reason still liked sports they were bad at. I loved martial arts and I have as an adult occasionally managed to get back into it for some months at a time... But I never managed to maintain the habit and social connections. Now it’s been years again and I know I would be happier with this hobby. Well.
6. What's the first thing you notice about other people?
Their clothes. Not in a judgmental sense, I am just genuinely fascinated by what people choose to wear. There is a good chance I won’t remember their names and especially their faces.
7. What's your eyes colour?
Good question. I never knew what to call it. My passport says green brown. Possibly what in English are called hazel eyes. I think the Polish do it better: They say oczy piwne - beer eyes :D
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Scary or at least suspenseful movies with happy endings
9. Any special talents?
... I guess I can read fast? And remember unimportant particulars? The occasional hyperfocus?
10. Where were you born?
In a cretaceous basin
11. What are your hobbies?
Stalking ducks, beachcombing, catching pokemon while riding my bike, clumsily climbing up outcrops, sitting with the back against the radiator while reading
12. Do you have any pets?
No. Sometimes I fantasize about living somewhere I could keep a few ducks... But we will see if that will ever be feasible.
13. How tall are you?
My passport says 155 cm but I think I took a guess.
14. Favorite subject in school?
Oh dear. I think there is not a single subject I did not at one point in time love and then hate. When I was little I disliked math but grew to like it more and more. Latin was a good thing, as well as other languages.
15. Dream job?
Just something that is not totally without positive impact, that I can survive on and where no one yells at or hits on me. Anything else I don’t dare dream of anymore.
...Ok that sounds very negative ^^” I really would be happy with that though, as long as there are ducks living within biking distance and I can pirate institutional access to journals.
I’m tagging @mlem-wooloowoo @likealimestonecowboy @ley-med
Just if you feel like it atm, no pressure!

2024 reading review
I was tagged by the ever lovely @ninadove and finally this is one I can actually do (I haven't been ignoring your tags, it's just that 2024 was the year I started working full time and I just did not write)! Anyway!
In 2024 I met my modest goodreads goal of 30 (scaled down from my usual 50 bc of work) and here are the highlights:
Storia del Mare by Alessandro Vanoli
To my knowledge this book is not currently available in any other language so this is mainly for the benefit of my Italian-speaking mutuals. I loved this book so so so much. It keeps the perfect balance of informative and fun, and the subject matter is so varied that on a very deep level it feels like those encyclopedias for kids that we'd read so proudly and then recite random facts out of for months. Best book of the year, 10/10, no notes.
The Secret Garden by F. H. Burnett
Mary Lennox, a spoiled, ill-tempered, and unhealthy child, comes to live with her reclusive uncle in Misselthwaite Manor on England’s Yorkshire moors after the death of her parents. There she meets a hearty housekeeper and her spirited brother, a dour gardener, a cheerful robin, and her wilful, hysterical, and sickly cousin, Master Colin, whose wails she hears echoing through the house at night.
This was, I believe, my third re-read of this book in the original English (I cannot for the life of me count the times I read it in Italian as a child). It's a comfort read of mine, so full of hope, warmth, and whimsy! Also, I may or may not be working on a retelling... 👀
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
In Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare includes two quite different stories of romantic love. Hero and Claudio fall in love almost at first sight, but an outsider, Don John, strikes out at their happiness. Beatrice and Benedick are kept apart by pride and mutual antagonism until others decide to play Cupid.
Idk why I waited so long to hop on the bandwagon, but this skyrocketed straight into my top 3 Shakespeare comedies DESPITE having the least funny comedic subplot ever (scholars don't @ me I hate the constables, it's 100% personal), so it must be good. I've read it twice, seen it 4 times.
The Ill-Made Knight by T. H. White
The goodreads summary sucks so here: it's book 3 of the once and future king and it's all about our boy Lancelot! Ugly French child is starry-eyed and has a puppy crush on the king, ends up his best friend (read entangled in a messy homoerotic relationship with him) while also madly in love with the queen. It all hurts exquisitely. Also, we all should say thank you to Mr White for giving us the delicious image of thee king Arthur, kneeling on the ground, strapping on Lancelot's greaves so he can go and rescue queen Guinevere. What's more polycule than that.
And that's all folks! Thanks Again Nina for the tag. I'm curious to know what @mlem-wooloowoo @automatisma and @flussoperpetuo have been reading (no pressure tho!)
