anyway i was gonna say, i think neither charlie nor cameron really know who they are, but for different reasons.

whereas cameron has been pushing away the sort of person he is and what personally matters to him for probably years because it doesnt fit into peoples varying and conflicting expectations of him, charlie has expectations for himself that he wants to live up to, but they require sort of ignoring some very real prominent parts of himself, namely anything that doesnt fit a "cool funny guy" persona that he is putting up.

theres two details in particular that demonstrate this to me especially so -

for cameron, you'll notice during the early parts of the movie hes more social and open about things he likes with the poets, but about half way through (specifically after he mentions liking the clarinet and charlie makes a comment and they all laugh at him), he stops, culminating in when he's not at the meeting where todd reads his poem or with everyone grieveing neil.

for charlie, its when he gets in trouble for submitting the article. hes literally in tears when neil asks him if he's expelled, but he continuously denies ever feeling bad about it or having regrets.

and furthermore i think this ties into their conflict with each other, particularly on charlies end. not hating cameron wouldnt fit with charlies persona. he has to because thats what the kind of person he wants to be would do. and they both probably think the other has their life together, but thats not really true.
