Tiger and Phil go back-to-back on Saturday at The Open
Tumblr media
Wake up and have breakfast with Tiger Woods at The Open on Saturday.
A sizable 79 players made the cut at the Open. For a cut rule that slots at the top 70 and ties, that’s one of the bigger numbers you are going to get at a major. On the PGA Tour, they have a secondary Saturday cut when a large number makes it through to the weekend. There is obviously no secondary cut at golf’s oldest major championship and there is also no need for it.
That’s because Scotland is working with some 17 hours of daylight this time of year. Carnoustie is the northernmost course in the Open rota, only adding to the luxury of daylight this championship often enjoys. There’s so much light that even getting the 156 players through the first two days is never really a problem. And that includes sending the entire field off the first tee. The 156-player fields at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship are jammed into groups of three off split tees for sun-up to sun-down golf the first two days. At the open, we get groups of three rolling off No. 1 from about 6:30 a.m. until after 4 p.m. local.
Once that cut is made, there’s obviously even greater room to work for the R&A. The Open is often impacted by weather, but almost never electric weather that would cause a suspension of play. High winds have been known to stop things but that’s really it. This weekend’s forecast looks clear enough and the 79-player field won’t start on Saturday until after 9 a.m. local in Carnoustie. That’s 4 a.m. back in the eastern U.S.
The anchor pairing of Kevin Kisner and Zach Johnson will go at 11 a.m. on the number, or 4 p.m. local. The R&A is also usually good about keeping pace of play right around four hours. Don’t expect Kisner and Johnson to come in much after 3 p.m. ET, which is when NBC is scheduled to go off the air on Saturday. It may be a little after that, but the pace should be close to four hours.
Tiger Woods is toward the bottom half of the draw at even-par. He tees off at 8:15 a.m. ET and will play his full round during the NBC coverage window. Golf Channel has the early coverage from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. Tiger draws the relatively unknown and untested Shaun Norris, who will play surrounded by a circus with which he’s never encountered. To make the crowd cluster even more intense, Phil Mickelson will be playing just one group ahead. Expect to see all of their shots on NBC, especially before those leaders get on the course.
Here’s the full tee sheet for Saturday’s third round at the British Open:

British Open projected cut line: Tiger Woods safely on right side at Carnoustie
Tumblr media
The British Open, which boasts a full 156-man field, utilizes a pretty standard cut rule. The top 70 and ties make it through to the weekend. At Carnoustie this week, it looks like that number will come in somewhere around 2-over. The wind, of course, could turn unexpectedly and start bumping scores higher but that is not in the forecast at the moment. It will pick up in the afternoon, but it’s not supposed to be a dramatic difference. Rain has softened the course a bit and could yield to lower scores that move the number up a stroke or two.
The top draw near the cut line on Friday morning is the biggest draw in the history of the game. Tiger Woods, who posted an even-par 71 on Thursday, started his second round with two bogeys in his first three holes. That promptly put him on the wrong side of the cut line. Woods has missed five of his last seven major championship cuts but of course some of those came as he played with a messed up back.
Woods missed the U.S. Open cut a month ago by a good margin and that was always a possibility with Shinnecock and a USGA setup. But an MC this week would have been much more disappointing and shocking. Carnoustie, baked to a crisp, was set up well for Tiger to post some numbers. His history on the links and his creative mind for it make him well-suited for this major. It’s also the one that is most benign for the aging vets, as has been demonstrated over the past decade.
So Tiger gassing up the jet for the States on Friday would have been a massive disappointment. Fortunately, he has righted the ship following those two early bogeys. He backed them up immediately with two birdies, one on the fourth and another coming via a long putt that you just can’t consistently count on.
So Tiger is back to two clear of the cut line. Justin Thomas, however, took a big nosedive to the wrong side of the cut line with three straight double bogeys on Nos. 6 through 8. He went from the first page of the leaderboard to a tie for 100th place. That’s no good for the No. 2 player in the world.

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland | The Latest: Woods top of leaderboard at British Open
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/GiVjLU
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland | The Latest: Woods top of leaderboard at British Open
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — The Latest on the British Open (all times local): 4:15 p.m.
Tiger Woods is back on top of the leaderboard at a major championship.
With a tap-in birdie at the par-5 14th hole, Woods joined Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood and three others in a share of the lead at the British Open.
The 14-time major champion is 6 under for his third round.
Spieth, the defending champion, has also made a strong start to his third round, eagling the first hole after driving onto the green, and then rolling in a birdie at No. 4. He missed an 8-footer on No. 5 for the outright lead. ___ 3:10 p.m.
Tiger Woods is making a bit of a move in the British Open, sinking a long putt on the ninth hole for an opening 3-under 33 on the front nine.
Woods made a 40-footer on the ninth for his third birdie against no bogeys on the front nine to get to 3-under par for the tournament. He was three shots behind the leaders, who had yet to tee off in the afternoon at Carnoustie.
Scoring conditions were ideal on a warm day with little wind and greens softened by rain the day before. There already was a 64 on the board by Justin Rose and a 65 by Yusaku Miyazato.
Woods began the day six shots back. The three-time British Open champion is searching for his first win of the year and his first major championship since winning the U.S. Open in 2008.
Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner shared the overnight lead at 6-under par. ___ 1:30 p.m.
Justin Rose tied the lowest score ever in the British Open at Carnoustie, shooting a 7-under 64 to move onto the early leaderboard on a day when scoring conditions were ideal.
Rose, who needed to make an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole just to make the cut a day earlier, started his round with a birdie on the first hole and finished it with birdies on both 17 and 18. He didn’t make a bogey on the normally tough Carnoustie links.
The round ties the low at Carnoustie shot in the final round in 2007 by Steve Stricker and Richard Green.
Rose finished nearly three hours before the leaders teed off, and was at 4 under for the tournament, two shots off the lead held by Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner.
Tiger Woods is out on the course, making a par on the first hole. He is even par for the tournament. ___ 12:45 p.m.
More than three hours before the co-leaders tee off, Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner have a little more company.
In mild conditions that allow for low scoring, Chris Wood of England already is 6 under for the day through 11 holes and is at 4-under par, just two shots off the lead.
Justin Rose, who made the cut with an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the second round, is 5 under through 15 holes and 2 under for the tournament. Masters champion Patrick Reed was right there with him until missing a 6-foot par putt on the 16th hole, dropping him to 4 under for the third round and 1 under for the tournament.
Tiger Woods was on the range, preparing to tee off on the weekend at the British Open for the first time since 2014 at Hoylake. ___ 11:20 a.m.
Carnoustie is still waiting on the one element that defines a strong test at the British Open: the wind.
The third round began with little more than a mild breeze, and several players were taking advantage. Masters champion Patrick Reed ran off three straight birdies starting at No. 5 and has made the turn at 3 under. That makes Reed even par for the championship, six shots behind.
Justin Rose, who made a birdie on the 18th hole Friday to make the cut, was 2 under through 8 holes.
It wasn’t easy on everyone. Former champion Henrik Stenson hit into a dry burn on the fourth hole. With his right leg flexed on the turf and his left leg in the 3-foot deep ditch, he managed to get the ball out, but still made double bogey. ___ 10 a.m.
Justin Rose has started his third round of the British Open much earlier than he would have liked.
But at least he’s still playing.
Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, Nos. 1 and 2 in the world, missed the cut. Rose is No. 3 and nearly joined them until he made an 18-foot birdie putt on the last hole to make the cut on the number. He was nine shots behind Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner, who shared the lead at Carnoustie on 6-under 136.
They do not tee off until mid-afternoon Saturday, one shot ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, Pat Perez and Xander Schauffele.
Rose began by smashing driver into the left rough, although he was able to hit wedge to 6 feet for birdie.

PGA Tour moves tee times up for Sunday at Memorial
Tumblr media
A threatening forecast prompts the PGA Tour to move tee times up for the final round at Muirfield Village.
It would not be an authentic Memorial tournament unless the weather somehow impacted the schedule in a significant way. The 2018 edition at Muirfield Village had mostly dodged what looked like an awful forecast at the start of the week. There was a 90-minute rain delay on Friday afternoon but aside from that, everything has stayed on schedule and there’s not been much rain during playing hours (overnight is a different story).
We ran out of luck on Sunday and the PGA Tour was not going to take any chances. The forecast is not pretty and the Tour made the proactive move to put the remaining field in threesomes and use split tees for the final round. This condenses the entire field down into a two-hour window and is a common practice for avoiding weather disruptions that could push a conclusion back a day. The Tour will start them at 7:30 a.m. ET on this Sunday, racing against the weather and trying to finish around 2 p.m. or so.
It’s not ideal for the Tour, the tournament, or the TV partner. Everyone would prefer the usual showcase finish around 6 p.m. or so but it’s a sensible choice to move things up to first thing in the morning. The fact that there is U.S. Open sectional qualifying on Monday morning probably doesn’t help either, with many players in this field needing to go through that 36-hole sectional. A Sunday finish — no matter what time of day that comes — is critical at Jack Nicklaus’ event.
This all means that Tiger Woods has an early Sunday tee time when, in fact, he’s played well enough over the last two days to have a traditional late Sunday slot. Woods will tee off alongside Whee Kim and J.B. Holmes at 9:10 a.m. ET off No. 1 tee. That’s just two spots ahead of the Sunday final pairing. Tiger is five shots off the pace after sputtering to the finish on Saturday evening with two bogeys in his final three holes. He held the lead at one point, but the players behind him still had so many holes and it was Bryson DeChambeau that pushed the pace with a bogey-free 66. DeChambeau is 14-under and one shot clear of Patrick Cantlay, Kyle Stanley, and young stud Joaquin Niemann.
Tiger is certainly capable of erasing the five-shot cushion. He’ll need more help from just DeChambeau, however, as there’s loads of talent all around the top 10. Golf Channel will have live coverage on TV and on their streaming service at 8:30 a.m. ET. CBS will then take over and stream the finish on their website and through their app, as well as on PGA Tour Live. Unlike Golf Channel, CBS will not have the finish live on TV, but just on those streaming services.
Barring no weather delays, the final groups should finish around 2 p.m. ET Sunday. Here’s the full tee sheet for Sunday’s final round at the Memorial tournament:

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland | The Latest: Spieth, Schauffele, Kisner share lead at Open
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/Tuet6y
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland | The Latest: Spieth, Schauffele, Kisner share lead at Open
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland  — The Latest on the British Open (all times local): 8:10 p.m. Americans Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner share the lead on 9-under par heading into the final round of the British Open, with Tiger Woods four shots back in his bid for a first major title in 10 years.
Schauffele and Kisner are going for their first victory in a major, while Spieth is seeking his fourth and to be the first back-to-back British Open champion in 10 years.
Schauffele will be in the last pairing with Spieth after rolling in a long birdie putt on No. 18 for a 4-under 67.  Kisner, who led after the first round and was a co-leader after the second round, parred his last four holes for a 68.
Another American, Kevin Chappell, is alone in fourth place, two shots behind after a 67.  Woods shot 66 and is in a tie for sixth place with six more players, including Rory McIlroy (70) and Tommy Fleetwood (71).
7 p.m. Jordan Spieth has shot a 6-under 65 and is tied for the lead in his bid to become the first back-to-back British Open champion in 10 years. Spieth began the third round by driving the 396-yard opening hole and making the 10-foot eagle putt. He didn’t make a bogey and took the lead with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th, a hole where he made bogey each of the previous two rounds. Spieth was at 9-under 204.
Kevin Kisner also was at 9 under with three holes remaining. If Spieth stays in the lead, he would be the first defending champion to lead going into the final round since Tiger Woods at Hoylake in 2006. ___ 5:15 p.m. Tiger Woods has shot a 5-under 66 in the third round of the British Open and is in contention to win his first major in more than 10 years.
He scrambled for par at the tough 18th hole at Carnoustie, after his tee shot landed on the bank of the Barry Burn and bounced right into the thick rough. He laid up, pitched to three feet, and made a par.
At 5 under overall, Woods was two shots off the lead. The last of his 14 majors came at the U.S. Open in 2008. ___ 4:55 p.m. Brooks Koepka is unlikely to be celebrating back-to-back major victories at the British Open on Sunday. The U.S. Open champion started the third round five shots off the lead but is 4 over for the day after three bogeys on the front nine and a double-bogey at the par-4 12th.
Koepka is 3 over for the tournament, 10 shots off the lead. Also playing himself out of contention on a day featuring plenty of birdies is Jason Day, who also made 6 at No. 12 and is 1 over after 15 holes. He is even par overall. ___ 4:15 p.m.
They do not tee off until mid-afternoon, one shot ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, Pat Perez and Xander Schauffele.  Rose began by smashing driver into the left rough, although he was able to hit wedge to 6 feet for birdie.

Rai, Scrivener and Miyazato share early lead in Hong Kong
REUTERS: Aaron Rai, Jason Scrivener and Yusaku Miyazato all shot five-under-par 65s to share the lead after the opening round of the Hong Kong Open on Thursday, as U.S. Masters champion Patrick Reed struggled in windy conditions at Fanling.
Making the most of calm conditions, Rai made his move on the back-nine as he followed up a birdie on the par-three 12th with a tap-in eagle on par-five 13th,…

British Open odds 2018: Tiger Woods among favorites at Carnoustie
Tumblr media
The third men’s major championship can often be the toughest to project. The British Open is a completely different style of challenge for the best players in the world. It can yield unknown, random champions and it can also produce some epic duels among the players at the top of the world rankings. Weather can wipe out half the field or completely change the dynamic of a hot round when you’re out in the middle of it.
Carnoustie is reputed as the toughest course in the Open rota and this year’s edition will be a fascinating test due to a summer drought. Scotland is “baked out,” as they say and it’s giving these players different strategy options. Mid-irons are running out to 300 yards and drivers are running out well in excess of 400 yards. The fairways are faster than the greens and the course is playing like concrete. The rough is also much thinner and less penal than they’re used to at Carnoustie.
That’s led to a host of bombers saying they’re going to grip and rip it and if it goes into the rough, no big deal. They will have cleared the trouble and pot bunkers. Others have said they’ll hit more accurate mid-irons and still roll out into a desirable position. Some, like Phil Mickelson, have said they’ll fall somewhere in between mixing in more drivers than expected but also hanging back and utilizing the roll with shorter clubs.
It led Brandel Chamblee to say on Monday night that this felt like the most “open” major in some time. The odds corroborate that sense again, as we’ve seen at the first two majors this year. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is the favorite again, but it’s not by a commanding margin. In past years, we’ve seen favorites listed down in the 5 or 6 or 7/1 range. At his peak, Tiger was an absurd 2 or 3/1 to win majors. This year, the favorites are often listed up in the double digits and DJ comes in lowest at 12/1 this week.
Tiger Woods comes in at the 25/1 slot which is ... kinda good value as far as Tiger goes? You’re almost never getting the real value for Tiger because the public money just pours in on the biggest draw in the history of the game. That pushes the books’ exposure upward and they continually bump his odds down to protect themselves, even if Tiger has no real chance to hang with the players at the top of the world rankings.
But he’s playing well this summer and this might be the major, especially with these conditions, that gives him the best chance to win over the final decade or so of his career. This season, he’s playing more like a top 20 player in the world and has shown he can contend on Tour again. He also knows how to play a links-style course better than almost anyone in the field. A 25/1 number is not bad!
