Live Update: Exhibit features Ernie Barnes, football player turned artist
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) When Ernie Barnes played with the San Diego Chargers, his teammates nicknamed him ”Big Rembrandt” because he was always scribbling on pieces of paper.
After he retired, he went on to become a famous painter. His ”Sugar Shack” painting was on the cover of a Marvin Gaye album and was used in the closing credits of the sitcom ”Good Times.”
Now the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh is exhibiting 38 of his paintings.
Many aren’t known because Barnes often painted for people who commissioned his work.
Barnes played professional football in the 1960s before pursuing his art career. He’s famous for his elongated figures of African-Americans in uplifting scenes.
The exhibit is the first since he died at age 70 in 2009. It continues through March 3.

PRO FOOTBALL
New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman will miss the first four games of the 2018 season for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.
NFL officials confirmed that Edelman would be suspended without pay for the Patriots’ first four regular-season games. ESPN had reported last month that Edelman was facing a four-game suspension.
Edelman, 32, missed the 2017 season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. He had 98 receptions in 2016, the third time in a four-year stretch that he caught over 90 passes.
Edelman will miss a home game against Houston, trips to Jacksonville and Detroit, plus a home game against Miami.
He will be eligible to return to the Patriots’ active roster on Oct. 1, enabling him to make his 2018 debut Oct. 4 against Indianapolis.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been suspended without pay for the first two games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s conduct and substance-abuse policy.
The NFL said that Foster will also be fined for violations from a weapons offense and misdemeanor drug charge that were resolved earlier this offseason.
Foster says he accepts the league’s decision and apologized for hurting the team.
Foster will miss San Francisco’s games against Minnesota and Detroit before being allowed to return on Sept. 17 before the Niners play Kansas City.
PRO BASKETBALL
NEW YORK (AP) – The NBA estimates an increase of about 40,000 miles of travel in the postseason if it scrapped its current conference format and took the top 16 teams.
Calls to change the system were renewed this week when LeBron James left Cleveland for the Los Angeles Lakers, which could create another strong Western Conference team after Houston and Golden State had the league’s top two records last season. They met in a thrilling West final before the Warriors swept the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.
Commissioner Adam Silver has said ideally there would be a format allowing the two best teams to meet for the title, but has repeatedly expressed concern about the additional travel that would be created if teams were seeded 1 to 16 in the postseason, instead of the current format in which it’s the top eight teams in each conference.
BASEBALL
SEATTLE (AP) – The Los Angeles Angels activated two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani from the 10-day disabled list and used him as the designated hitter in their game against the Seattle Mariners.
Ohtani and his injured right elbow are only cleared to hit for now, but Los Angeles said he will be re-evaluated as a pitcher in three weeks.
Ohtani received stem cell therapy and a platelet-rich plasma injection to help heal the Grade 2 sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament suffered more than three weeks ago. Ohtani was cleared for a hitting program Friday and took part in two simulated games against minor league pitchers over the weekend.
”We’re going to see how many looks we can give him as a (designated hitter) and hopefully he’ll give us a lift there,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
Ohtani went 0 for 4 in Los Angeles’ 4-1 loss to the Mariners.
SOCCER
MOSCOW (AP) – England ended its long run of penalty misery and reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 12 years, beating Colombia 4-3 in a shootout.
Eric Dier scored the decisive kick after a 1-1 draw.
England will play Sweden in the quarterfinals in Samara on Saturday. It is the furthest England has progressed in any tournament since the David Beckham era, when a golden generation of players exited the 2002 and 2006 World Cups in the last eight.
England took the lead in a scrappy match when Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot in the 57th minute. Yerry Mina headed in an equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time.
England trailed 3-2 in the shootout after Jordan Henderson’s shot was saved, but Mateus Uribe hit the bar and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford then saved Carlos Bacca’s kick.
MOSCOW (AP) – The lack of a U.S. team caused a big viewership drop for World Cup telecasts.
The 48 group stage telecasts on Fox and FS1 averaged 2,069,000 viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. That is down 42 percent from the 3.54 million average on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC four years ago and down 15 percent from the 2,429,000 average on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC eight years ago.
Excluding games involving the U.S. team in previous World Cups, the average declined 28 percent from the 2014 tournament in Brazil and was up 1 percent from the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Most group-stage kickoff times this year were morning EDT, starting as early as 6 a.m., and the latest matches began at 2 p.m. Games in 2014 started mostly from noon to 4 p.m. EDT, while in 2010 games there were many matches at 10 a.m. and some as early as 7:30 a.m.
Twenty-six group-stage matches were aired on Fox, up from six on ABC in 2014 and four on ABC in 2010.
Ratings include only television viewers and not those who viewed digital streams.

Live Update: NFL suspends Packers RB Aaron Jones for 2 games
New Post has been published on https://livevsongame-tv.com/nfl/live-update-nfl-suspends-packers-rb-aaron-jones-for-2-games-2/22207/html
Live Update: NFL suspends Packers RB Aaron Jones for 2 games
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The NFL has suspended Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones for the first two games of the 2018 season without pay for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Jones will miss the season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 9 and the Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, with both games at Lambeau Field.
He will be eligible to return to the roster on Sept. 17, the day after the Vikings game.
The discipline stems from a traffic stop in Brown County, Wisconsin, on Oct. 1, 2017, in which Jones was charged with operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in his system; speeding; and operating a vehicle without a valid license. The case came to light after he entered a plea of not guilty on Nov. 15.
The case was resolved in February with Jones pleading no contest to the first charge. He was ordered to pay more than $1,000 in court costs, and his license was revoked for six months. The other two counts were dismissed.
The Packers cited confidentiality in declining comment. A representative for Jones referred to the player’s apology in November.
“I owe an apology to my family, teammates, coaches, the fans and the Packers organization,” Jones told reporters on Nov. 21. “I made a mistake, and I take full responsibility for it. And it won’t happen again.”
Jones can take part in all preseason practices and games. Players must report to Packers training camp on July 25.
Jones was second on the team in rushing last season with 448 yards and four touchdowns on 81 carries. Fellow rookie Jamaal Williams had a team-high 556 yards and four scores on 153 carries, giving coach Mike McCarthy a young but promising one-two punch in the backfield.
The Packers still have Williams returning at running back along with Ty Montgomery, who was limited to eight games last season because of injuries.

Live Update: NFL suspends Rams right guard Jamon Brown for 2 games
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) Right guard Jamon Brown has been suspended for the first two games of the Los Angeles Rams‘ upcoming season for violating the NFL policy and program for substances of abuse.
The NFL announced the suspension Tuesday.
Brown started all 16 games last season for the Rams, who drafted him in the third round in 2015. He has started 30 games in three NFL seasons.
Los Angeles had the same starting offensive line for 15 consecutive games last season before resting several regulars in the finale. That line continuity was a big factor in the defending NFC West champions’ transformation from the NFL’s worst offense into the league’s highest-scoring unit during coach Sean McVay’s first season.

Live Update: Owens says he will give induction speech at Chattanooga
Terrell Owens has decided to celebrate his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Chattanooga, where he played college football.
The former All-Pro receiver, who has said he was not attending the induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio, said in a statement on Tuesday that he would give his acceptance speech at his alma mater.
Owens posted on Twitter on Tuesday that he has ”decided to give my Hall of Fame speech at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in McKenize Arena on Saturday, August 4. The event, which is free and open to the public, starts at 3:17 p.m.”
Owens said last month that he had declined his invitation to attend the Aug. 4 induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio.
Owens says he is ”proud to be a Moc, and I’m honored to be able to share this experience with my family, friends, teammates and fans at the place that provided me an opportunity beyond high school and where I truly began to find myself as an athlete.”
The 44-year-old Owens says he is looking forward to the event, and ”Getcha popcorn ready.”

Live Update: More than 100 phony replica Super Bowl rings found
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Federal authorities say they have intercepted a shipment of 108 phony replica Super Bowl rings representing many past champion teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say the rings were found in an express consignment parcel that arrived June 18 from Hong Kong marked as alloy rings.
Trade enforcement officers noted ”poor craftsmanship” and detained the rings to verify their authenticity with the National Football League, the trademark holder.
Customs officials say the NFL confirmed that the rings were phony. Officials say an authorized replica of a Super Bowl ring can cost $10,000 but counterfeit ones are offered on the internet for $25.

Live Update: The 10 best returning players in the FCS
New Post has been published on https://livevsongame-tv.com/nfl/live-update-the-10-best-returning-players-in-the-fcs/22200/html
Live Update: The 10 best returning players in the FCS
(STATS) – The best players not only win games, but they help their teammates reach a higher level as well.
It’s not surprising a ranking of the 10 top returning players in the FCS are members of some of the best programs.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so one person’s No. 1 could be someone else’s No. 3 or 4, and one’s No. 11 might crack another’s top 10. The truth is, however, you want any of these players on your favorite team.
10. Chandler Burks, Kennesaw State, QB, Sr., 5-foot-10, 187 pounds
Burks was at the controls of the FCS’ No. 1-ranked rushing offense, becoming the first Big South quarterback to surpass 1,000 rushing yards (1,103) and 1,000 passing yards (1,307). The Big South offensive player of the year led the third-year program to a 12-game winning streak.
9. Marlon Bridges, Jacksonville State, FS, Jr., 6-0, 200
Bridges has the freedom to go change games. In his first two seasons, the two-time Ohio Valley Conference first-teamer intercepted eight passes and forced five fumbles.
8. Christian Rozeboom, South Dakota State, LB, Jr., 6-2, 230
Rozeboom plays as if he has to prove himself every day. In the Jackrabbits’ two deepest playoff runs of their FCS history, Rozeboom led the team in tackles with 132 as a freshman and 127 as a sophomore.
7. Bruce Anderson, North Dakota State, RB, Sr., 5-11, 216
Saving his best for the 2017 playoffs, Anderson led the national champion Bison with 1,216 rushing yards last season. His game-breaking speed and power wrecked Sam Houston State for 237 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns in the semifinals.
6. Davion Davis, Sam Houston State, WR/RS, 5-11, 180
On a Sam Houston team with a number of standouts, Davis was named the Southland Conference offensive player of the year. The speedster dominated in a number of ways, starting with wide receiver (78 receptions for 1,206 yards and 17 touchdowns), but also on reverses and in the return game.
5. Ahmad Gooden, Samford, DE, Sr., 6-1, 240
College D-linemen generally don’t surpass 100 tackles in a season, but the Southern Conference defensive player of the year did as a junior. He was always in an opponent’s backfield, racking up 15 1/2 tackles for loss and 5 1/2 sacks.
4. Easton Stick, North Dakota State, QB, Sr., 6-2, 221
The most outstanding player of the 2017 championship game is 34-3 as a starter. If he leads NDSU to a 15-0 record – concluding with a record seventh FCS title – he would surpass former Bison star Brock Jensen’s FCS quarterbacks mark of 48 wins.
3. Keelan Doss, UC Davis, WR, Sr., 6-3, 210
One-on-one coverage is not recommended for defenses. With 115 receptions in 11 contests, Doss led all Division I players with 10.5 receptions per game last year. He has NFL ball skills, using what coach Dan Hawkins calls “big old mitts” for hands. In 2017, Doss finished third in voting for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award, which honors the offensive player of the year.
2. Gage Gubrud, Eastern Washington, QB, Sr., 6-2, 205
After passing for an FCS single-season record 5,160 yards as well as 48 TDs in 2016, Gubrud had to make do without Cooper Kupp and two other 1,000-yard receivers last year, and he still passed for 3,342 yards in 10 games and ranked second in the FCS in total offense (357.8 yards per game). He’s accounted for 84 touchdowns (74 passing, 10 rushing) in the last two seasons, finishing third in the Payton Award voting in 2016 and 13th last season.
1. Devlin Hodges, QB, Sr., 6-1, 205, Samford
By simply matching his junior season, Hodges would finish comfortably at No. 2 in FCS history in total offense (he has 11,005 career yards; 1993 Walter Payton Award winner Steve McNair of Alcorn State set the all-time record with 16,823 yards from 1991-94). The two-time SoCon offensive player of the year has a quick release, throwing for 79 touchdowns against just 25 interceptions. He finished fourth in the Payton Award voting last season.
On the Cusp: Dom Bragalone, RB, Lehigh; Taryn Christion, QB, South Dakota State; Case Cookus, QB, Northern Arizona; Rashad Robinson, CB, James Madison; Rob Rolle, S, Villanova; Nathan Stewart, WR, Sam Houston State.

Live Update: Prosecutors drop Gillette Stadium bomb threat case
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) The case against a Gillette Stadium worker who had been charged with emailing a threat to blow up the home of the New England Patriots has been dropped by prosecutors in Massachusetts.
The Sun Chronicle reports that a spokesman for Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey said in a statement Monday the case against 26-year-old Ryan Ringuette was dropped amid doubts about his guilt.
The Attleboro man was arrested in August amid a dispute with his then-girlfriend, who was charged with lying to police about her access to Ringuette’s email account. Her case is still pending.
Ringuette worked part-time for the company that provides security and guest services at the stadium.
Authorities say he had no access to bomb-making materials.
His lawyer did not return a call for comment.

Live Update: Eagles will wear home jerseys vs. Saints because of golf bet
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles will have their choice of uniform jerseys when they visit the New Orleans Saints in Week 10 because of a golf bet between coaches Doug Pederson and Sean Payton.
Payton said Monday that he lost a wager to Pederson on a golf course at the NFL meetings in March so the Super Bowl champion Eagles will get to choose their green home jerseys when they play the Saints on Nov. 18.
Pederson said his “competitive juices” were flowing and he wanted to beat Payton. It took three holes for a victor to be declared.
Payton recalled the hole involved him shooting into the water.
Pederson, Payton and Arizona State coach Herman Edwards spoke to reporters on a conference call in advance of their appearance in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe later this month.

Live Update: Ranking the NFL’s Quarterbacks from 16 to 1
New Post has been published on https://livevsongame-tv.com/nfl/live-update-ranking-the-nfls-quarterbacks-from-16-to-1/22195/html
Live Update: Ranking the NFL’s Quarterbacks from 16 to 1
The NFL is a league, by-and-large, driven by quarterbacks. It is hard to win if a team’s signal caller is not up to par. Franchises that lack consistency under center are similar to trying to eat clam chowder with a fork. It is possible, but not the best way of going about winning or consuming such an exquisite dish.
The NFL has been completely parlayed into a league that values dual-threat passers. No longer, or rather hardly, do you see the “traditional” quarterbacks that move like they are stuck in quick sand when it is time to flee the pocket.
This list is a continuation of a countdown started last week pertaining to the league’s starting quarterbacks. The guys on this list are ascending in the right direction, well-established, or long for hardware to be slid onto their fourth finger. Statistics are hardly a factor as we work our way to the climax.
So without further ado, here are the quarterbacks that rank from 16 to 1:
16. Deshaun Watson
Watson played in seven games and had 19 touchdowns. He would have the chance to break Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson’s record of most passing touchdowns by a rookie (26) as well as set a new mark. It will be interesting to see if Watson plays with the same fearlessness in coming off a torn ACL, especially behind a leaky front. If he can play a full season, the Houston Texans should be a threat in the AFC South.
15. Dak Prescott
The Dallas Cowboys starter is entering his third year and he is supposed to be in a situation where the offense is catered to his strengths. Thus far, Prescott has built a reputation as a winning quarterback as the Cowboys have finished with a record above .500 in his first two years. He moves the chains with short-to-intermediate throws and his feet. However, the quarterbacks ranked higher than him do more than the bare minimum to win games. In other words, he has to push the ball down the field more or find a way to string together more monster performances.
14. Jared Goff
Lucky to have this guy leading the way. Congrats Coach! pic.twitter.com/kkdPgymibu
— Jared Goff (@JaredGoff16) February 4, 2018
Yes, Goff is ranked higher than Prescott despite seeing one less year of action, essentially. The former Golden Bear showed he can win and perform at a high level with the prerequisite talent. Goff gets the nod over his 2016 draft peer, Prescott, because he throws with more conviction and assurance. It has nothing to do with stats or wins and losses, right now. It is simply about the eye test.
13. Derek Carr
Like Marcus Mariota, Carr broke his leg in week 16 of the 2016 oddly enough. Like Mariota, he spent the 2017 season looking very hesitant and unsure of himself. Carr can make every throw, use his legs, and he plays with that backyard football energy that is infectious. It will be interesting to see if he meshes well with Jon Gruden as his new coach is already challenging him to be great. The Oakland Raiders need a MVP campaign from their signal caller if they want to be the center of attention out West.
12. Kirk Cousins
Cousins is sixth among active quarterbacks in passing yards per game (261.4). It has never been about statistics for him as it simply comes down to performing in big moments. In a 2016 playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, Cousins threw for 300+ yards and was not backing down in a duel with Aaron Rodgers. However, when it mattered the most, Cousins and the Washington Redskins failed to generate points on their final five drives.
In the 2016 season finale, Cousins threw two picks in a game that would have got his team into the postseason had they won it. The New York Giants were playing with a “C’s get the degree” mind frame too having already secured a playoff bid.
Cousins wanted to be viewed and paid as one of the league’s upper echelon at his position. The Redskins chose another route while the Minnesota Vikings were eager for him to sign. Washington might have lacked the talent to help him succeed, but in Minnesota he will be expected to win and win big.
11. Matthew Stafford
Stafford is one of the more underrated players the NFL has to offer. He is top 10 among active quarterbacks with 216 touchdowns. He can make throws at just about any angle, even left handed if he desired to do so. The Detroit Lions all-time leading passer needs to muster up some wins as he is just 60-65 in his career.
10. Cam Newton
We like this day 😎#NationalHandshakeDay pic.twitter.com/dlqrIFHm5i
— Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) June 28, 2018
The 2015 MVP would be a lot higher on this list had the Carolina Panthers won Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos. In 2016, we saw Newton revert as he lost his passion and fire for the game. He got back to having fun last year and even rushed for a career-high 754 yards. With a new offensive coordinator in Norv Turner, Newton could benefit from a new scheme that is predicated on pushing the ball down the field. He has the arm and the skilled players out wide in Devin Funchess, Torrey Smith, Curtis Samuel, and rookie DJ Moore to produce some magic.
9. Matt Ryan
Another NFC South quarterback who would be higher on this list had he won a Super Bowl. Nevertheless, Ryan is like a surgeon on the field as he knows all of the little areas of the opposing defenses to apply pressure. The Atlanta Falcons star is five wins away from the century mark and is fourth among active throwers with 35 game-winning drives. Why else would they refer to him as “Matty Ice”?
8. Russell Wilson
Wilson is as cool as they come under pressure, both literally and figuratively. He was sacked 43 times behind a Seattle Seahawks front that needs more than Flex Seal to stop a leak. His line was so woebegone that he had to use his feet more often than he would have liked. Wilson led his team in passing and rushing yardage a year ago. What more could you want from the guy?
7. Andrew Luck
The Indianapolis Colts top gun missed an entire season and is still a top 10 quarterback. Imagine if he could get some resistance up front with a consistent rushing attack. Luck could very well end up top three at his position by the end of the season if he is truly back and playing like his chipper self. The Colts have to tread lightly with him.
6. Philip Rivers
Philip Rivers showed he has still got it with his performances towards the end of the 2017 season. pic.twitter.com/igoivQINdk
— Pro Football Focus (@PFF) July 1, 2018
Rivers is one of four quarterbacks to throw for over 4,000 yards the last five seasons. He has been one of the league’s unheralded stars in the last decade, but he is starting to get more notoriety as his team’s expectations grow. The Los Angeles Chargers are being dubbed as a team that could thwart the New England Patriots in the AFC and maybe win a Super Bowl. Those are lofty expectations being heaped on a team that missed the playoffs a year ago. It starts and ends with their captain, their quarterback, and their heart-and-soul in no. 17.
5. Carson Wentz
What a perfect scenario it would have been if Wentz finished the year and led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl while receiving league MVP. However, destiny had other plans. Nevertheless, Wentz could rival other signal callers like Luck as heir to the throne once the guys ranked higher than him retire. He is built like Big Ben at 6’5 and nearly 240 pounds. He is as nimble as Wilson. Lastly, he has the improvisation of Stafford. As you can see, Wentz has a lot of features that exist with other upper level passers. Last year was simply a prelude of things to come for Wentz.
4. Ben Roethlisberger
Big Ben must have been a huge The Clash fan growing up as “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” seemed to percolate all season for the two-time Super Bowl champ a year ago. All of a sudden, he came to his senses when the Pittsburgh Steelers brass drafted a Big Ben prototype in Mason Rudolph. A sense of pride seems to exist now in Roethlisberger one that the Steelers hope will galvanize them to another ring. By the way, he finished top five in passing yardage in what was a “down year” by his standards.
3. Drew Brees
The definition of insanity is trying something over and over again and expecting a different result. At one point, the New Orleans Saints could have been considered an insane organization for repeating the same habits that inhibited their ability to win. Sure, Brees would hover at the 5,000-yard mark from 2011 to 2016, but they were predictable without a formidable rushing attack.
The Saints decided to develop a run game headlined by Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. Brees only had 4,334 yards, his lowest mark since 2007, but he set a new league record with a 72 percent completion percentage. Also, he only threw eight picks, which was his lowest total since 2004. As a result, the Saints went to the playoffs for the first time since 2013 with a reformed Brees. Will he stay true to his new form or revert back to old habits?
2. Tom Brady
Five-time Super Bowl champion. Three-time league MVP. Heck, Brady even led the league in passing yardage with 4,577 yards in 2017. However, the face of the New England Patriots’ franchise is NOT the best quarterback. The best comparison for Brady would be to Kobe Bryant when he was winning his rings with Pau Gasol. Despite it all, LeBron James was still the better individual player. That is just how the cookie crumbles here and with the next guy on this list missing significant time last year it is easy to be a prisoner of the moment when it comes to Brady. He tops nearly every statistic of both active and all-time lists, but there is another Super Bowl winning California native that is better than him.
1. Aaron Rodgers
✊ Another Sunday closer to 🏈#GoPackGo pic.twitter.com/gFdF4c2kZi
— Green Bay Packers (@packers) July 1, 2018
From an individual’s perspective and at this point in time, Rodgers is better than Brady. Not all time, simply right now.
Rodgers is the Baba Yaga of the NFL and that is “The Boogeyman” for those that have never seen John Wick. When building a team and with the way the game has evolved in favoring dual-threat throwers, you would be hard-pressed to find many people not going with Rodgers. He can do it all.
The former Cal great can throw back over the middle late, throws into cracks and crevices that should not be thrown into, and steals a win or two with Hail Mary attempts. Those are just a few things Rodgers can do that are considered ill-advised or impossible. His arm talent is one of the best ever and when Rodgers smiles during a game it is usually an indication of bad things to come for the opposing team. Now, I am not clairvoyant, but another Super Bowl could make him “the greatest quarterback of all-time”. Ponder that.
Rodgers reigns supreme here on this list of the NFL’s elite. At the end of the day, the quarterbacks that rank from 1-10 are capable of winning on any given Sunday. Their legacies, however, vary.

PRO BASKETBALL
CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James is leaving home for Hollywood and an iconic team.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a new superstar – L.A.-Bron.
The four-time NBA MVP announced Sunday night that he has agreed to a four-year, $154 million contract with the Lakers, joining one of the league’s most storied franchises and switching conferences to try and dethrone the Golden State Warriors and grow his own legacy.
For the second time in his career, James is saying goodbye to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who drafted the teenage sensation from Akron in 2003 and have to be satisfied with winning just one title in the 11 years they had him.
Unlike his two previous forays in free agency, James did not drag out his decision and made the announcement less than 24 hours after NBA free agency opened.
His management agency, Klutch Sports Group, announced his agreement with the Lakers with a simple, short release. It was a stark contrast from eight years ago, when a poorly conceived TV special to announce his departure from Cleveland backfired and damaged James’ image.
James isn’t planning any more comments and there won’t be a welcoming press conference or celebration in Los Angeles, a person familiar with his plans said Sunday night on the condition of anonymity. James will make his next public comments on July 30 in Akron when he opens a public school started by his family foundation.
HOCKEY
TORONTO (AP) – Superstar center John Tavares is going home, agreeing to terms on a $77 million, seven-year contract with his childhood team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tavares announced his intentions on Twitter on Sunday, posting a picture of himself as a child in Maple Leafs bedding. The team says the deal is worth $11 million a season for seven years.
The 27-year-old point-a-game playmaker met with the Leafs, New York Islanders, San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars over the past several days in Los Angeles to hear their pitches for his services.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Tavares had 37 goals and 47 assists for 84 points in 82 games for the Islanders last season. He has 621 points in 669 career regular-season games.
Losing Tavares is a crushing blow to the Islanders, who have undergone an organizational makeover in recent months under still relatively new owners Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky. They hired Lou Lamoriello as president of hockey operations and fresh Stanley Cup winner Barry Trotz as coach.
PRO FOOTBALL
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor said scans on his injured neck have shown no improvement and declared it was ”time for the next chapter.”
Chancellor had been awaiting further clarity on his neck, which he injured in a game against the Arizona Cardinals in November. In a posting on his Twitter account Sunday night, Chancellor said his latest scans ”showed no healing.”
”I’ve played through all types of bruises and injuries at a high level. But this one, I just can’t ignore,” he wrote.
Chancellor never used the word ”retirement” in his statement, which may have been deliberate. Chancellor signed an extension through the 2020 season last August which contained guaranteed money in case of injury. An official retirement could open up the possibility of forfeiting some of that money.
Chancellor was named to four Pro Bowl teams (2011, 2013-15) and was twice a second-team All-Pro selection (2013, 2014). He appeared in 109 career games for Seattle with 93 starts after being selected in the fifth-round of the 2010 NFL draft.
SOCCER
MOSCOW (AP) – Russia shockingly eliminated Spain from the World Cup, surviving two hours of dominance by the 2010 champions in a 1-1 draw and then winning a penalty shootout 4-3.
Russia’s captain and goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved spot-kicks from Jorge ”Koke” Resurreccion and Iago Aspas, and four of his teammates all scored.
Spain dominated the ball during the game – completing more than 1,000 passes – but was too passive against a well-organized Russian defense.
Spain led in the 12th minute when captain Sergio Ramos helped force Russia’s Sergei Ignashevich into an own goal when his back was turned to the play. The 38-year-old defender diverted a crossed ball into the net with his heel.
An error in Spain’s defense let Russia level in the 41st, after Gerard Pique’s raised arm blocked a header by Artyom Dzyuba at a corner.
Dzyuba’s penalty kick fooled goalkeeper David De Gea to dive the wrong way.
Russia next plays Croatia or Denmark who play later Sunday. The quarterfinal is on Saturday evening in Sochi.
SOCHI, Russia (AP) – Edinson Cavani scored twice and Cristiano Ronaldo none, giving Uruguay a 2-1 victory over Portugal on Saturday at the World Cup.
On the same day Lionel Messi was sent home in Argentina’s loss, the other ”GOAT” at this tournament was also eliminated. It was two weeks ago that Ronaldo scored a hat trick in the same stadium against Spain, stroking his chin after the first goal to imply he was the ”greatest of all time.”
Uruguay, a two-time champion that reached the semifinals at the 2010 World Cup, will next face France on Friday in Nizhny Novgorod.
There was no goal from Ronaldo this time. Everywhere he went, the Portugal great was hounded by two or three Uruguayan defenders.
It was Cavani who instead took the spotlight. He combined with Luis Suarez to compete a series of precision passes to give Uruguay the early advantage with a header in the seventh minute. And after Portugal equalized on Pepe’s header in the 55th minute, it was Cavani again finishing a perfect Uruguay counter in the 62nd with a shot from just inside the penalty area that caught Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio slightly out of position and curled inside the far post.
