You encounter a low level Mithra Thief...
Tumblr media
"That's a strrrange place for a nap, Stranger."
You count your blessings she didn't rob you blind while you were taking a dirt nap.
Tumblr media
"C'mon, lets get you up. Heading to Valkrum Dunes? So are we. Wanna travel with us?"
You take her hand as the mithra helps pull you to your feet feeling relieved she's on your side.
"What are you standin' arrround for?? Adventure awaits!"

With even longtime FFXIV fans like Vice's Matt Vatankhah feeling burnt out on the game, I feel compelled to once again bang my favorite drum and point out that this is yet another thing that wasn't a problem in Final Fantasy XI, and Square Enix still decided to make a WoW clone instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final Fantasy XI may not be getting major content updates anymore but it is still live, still getting support, and still an unbelievably fun time and filled with gameplay decisions and features that - if you're exclusively used to the WoW model - will blow your mind. Horizontal gear progression. Actually deep combat that doesn't rely on instancing. Class combat that cannot be honed to perfection just by doing your rotation on a dummy. A housing system that doesn't just devolve into absurd landlord horseshit. They had this shit figured out in the early aughts.
I feel like if you play MMOs and you're dissatisfied with how the genre feels, you owe it to yourself and others to try older MMOs. Because I guarantee you a lot of what you're craving has already been done, and done incredibly well, but just discarded in order to imitate WoW. FFXIV NEEDED to reinvent itself because its launch was a poorly planned disaster that, among other things, completely discarded extremely important parts of Final Fantasy's identity that people love -- you know, like the fucking job system. It swapped to the current model because it's safer, not necessarily because it's better.
"Oh, Nick, you're just nostalgic" Nope! FFXIV was my first Final Fantasy MMO. I swapped to FFXI because I realized I was ignoring or rushing through large parts of the experience because they simply weren't fun, and you know what? I loved FFXI so much more.
FFXIV has higher graphical fidelity, UI, minigames, and character customization. That is about all the credit I am willing to give it. Shit, I even think a lot of the races look cuter. Look how much more distinctive the Mithra are than the Miqo'te while still staying cute.

Patch 7.1 — Crossroads Glamour
Music Theme
It's been a while but here it is! This is my glamour for the incoming patch! I had to go back to Eureka to get the chest piece and it was worth it. I wanted to see F'raneh as a Mithra and I'm in love with the result. Happy weekend and see you in Vana'diel ^w^)/

I'm probably showing my age here but everyone should know when the Dawntrail alliance raid comes out, this is all I will be thinking of:
youtube
I never personally played FFXI, my brother did for a minute, but As Vana'diel Turns and The End of the World warped my sense of humor into the chaotic mess it is today.

A tiny primer on FFXI, pt 1
With 7.1 approaching next month and with it the Final Fantasy XI alliance raid, I wanted to put something together for FFXIV players that never played the previous FF MMO.
As long as this may end up being, I promise it's not actually going into a whole lot of detail. It's more so to give a general idea of the setting, the different races, and some plot details.
THE WORLD
Final Fantasy XI takes place in the world of Vana'diel, and primarily in what's known as the Middle Lands, composed of the two continents of Quon and Mindartia, and the two islands of Elshimo and Kuzotz. Later expansions feature the lands of Aradjiah to the east, and the western continent of Ulbuka. And there's... other places.
PLAYER CHARACTERS
According to legend, the Ancients tried to reach Paradise, but were rejected and their civilization destroyed. The Goddess Altana wept at the devastation, and five of her tears created the enlightened races. Disguested at her weakness, the God of Twilight, Promathia, cursed the five races by bringing out their darkest emotions and dooming them to eternal conflict.
There are five playable races a player can choose. One interesting difference between FFXI and FFXIV is that the different races in FFXI also have different stats, representing their different characteristics. Fortunately, it doesn't limit what jobs they can be or how effective they are, as gear and gear-swapping can cover a lot of holes.
Minor edit: So FFXIV apparently has stat differences for different races and clans as well. Still, I feel pretty confident saying the FFXI stat differences were far more significant in comparison. If for no other reason than the effect on HP and MP pools. But again, gear, gear-swapping, and player skill make up for it.
Hume - your standard Human race. Hume's are well known for being extremely adaptable. Balanced stats.
Galka - a male-only race with large bodies and incredible strength. Similar to Roegadyn in some ways, but they also have large tails. They reproduce through reincarnation, and the newly reborn Galka has no memories of their past life. However, one Galka, called the Talekeeper, retains all the memories of every Galka's past lives for the last two centuries. Highest HP and VIT, lowest MP.
Mithra - similar to Miqo'te, but Mithra are a bit more cat-like. Alternatively, you could say they are like smaller, slimmer Hrothgar. Only female Mithra are playable (males do exist, but they are extremely rare, and only one ever shows up in-game). Highest DEX and AGI, tied with Galka for lowest CHR.
Elvaan - similar to Elezen, and I'd say specifically to Duskwight Elezen. Elvaan are tall, strong, (dark-skinned!) and super proud. Highest STR and MND, lowest DEX, AGI, and INT.
Tarutaru - similar to Lalafell, but even shorter and with dark brown noses. Tarutaru are intelligent and naturally gifted with magic, even at a young age. Highest INT and MP, lowest HP and STR.
THE MAIN NATIONS
Player characters can start in one of three nations: the Kingdom of San d'Oria, the Republic of Bastok, or the Federation of Windurst. Unlike FFXIV, each nation has its own quest storyline dealing with issues within that specific nation.
San d'Oria - a nation of Elvaan ruled by the d'Oraguille royal family. It's located in the northern part of Quon, and well known for its knights. (If you thought Ishgardians were pompous and arrogant, hoo boy, you've clearly never been to San d'Oria.) San d'Oria used to be a really major power, but then they tried going to war against the other two nations. We'll just say it did not go well for them.
Bastok - a democratic nation located in the south of Quon. It was founded by Hume miners and grew into a nation of mining, crafting, and technology, and is where you find Cid. Galka later settled in Bastok after being forced from their homeland by Anticans. For various reasons, there's a lot of tension between Humes and Galka in the city.
Windurst - a nation of magic, located at the southern edge of Mindartia. It was founded by tribes of Tarutaru, and at one point conquered most of the Middle Lands. Mithra also live here, acting as hunters and a sort of independent military force. Windurst has a truce with the Yagudo, a bird-like race, but it's arguably not a favorable one.
Jeuno - located at a central point between Quon and Mindartia and bridging the two continents, the Grand Duchy of Jeuno is the central point of trade for the Middle Lands, and currently the only nation with control of airships. It has a massive amount of economic and political power, but also declared itself to be neutral. Gameplay-wise, Jeuno is a key spot for several different storylines, and is where players get their chocobo license, their airship pass, and is the central airship hub.

Rambling About Magic the Gathering X Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy XI
Time for pain. You're reading the blog of one of dozens of people who actually really likes XI.
Dragoon's Wyvern
Tumblr media
Baby!!! Look at how cute he is. I love how in an interesting twist, the wyvern creates the Dragoon, rather than the other way around. The Mithra wearing the Drachen armor makes me happy.
Qiqirn Merchant
Tumblr media
I generally like the merchant cards. They're pretty interesting. This guy is cool, it's like the more places Qiqirn are selling in, the easier it is to buy from them. I do appreciate that the original Aht Urhgan guys are mentioned, rather than the La Noscean sequels.
Qutrub Forager
Tumblr media
I had to remind myself WHAT this enemy was. They live like, EXCLUSIVELY in Arrapago Reef, which I never hung out in much and the standout mob there for me were the Lamiae anyways. The art's really really good, the abilities feel proper undead, I just don't know if this was one of the mobs from XI I would have picked.
Sabotender
Tumblr media
Toe to tip, that's a Sabotender. We already have two Cactuars, I'm unsure if we needed a 3rd, but the art is good, the coloring is really nice. I like the "each opponent", since ____ needles is an AoE.
Goobbue Gardener
Tumblr media
YEAH! Goobbues are definitely iconic for the MMOs, so I'm glad they're here. Nice and simple, but look how happy he is.
Gysahl Greens
Tumblr media
This. Hm. I mean, Gysahl Greens had to happen. But I don't know why it got attributed to XI specifically. I guess I know they are important for chocoboing, but, hm. I'm conflicted. I do always like seeing XI armor though, good character there.
Prishe's Wanderings
Tumblr media
At least she got to appear in SOMETHING. I feel really robbed of XI character representation, there's so many good characters, especially the expansion heroines. Prishe not getting an actual card hurt, but I'm glad I get to see her at all. The card itself is fairly generic, but the art is the highlight; I love how they kept the XI eye style, and look! Shikaree Z gets to show up! I think they're in Jeuno; that guy back there ALMOST looks like Monberaux, but the hair isn't quite right. He's got the crop top at least.
Summon: Fenrir
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Especially since I played Wings of the Goddess recently, seeing the XI Fenrir get represented makes me really happy, he's The Coolest one. Ecliptic Growl is such a cool effect, and it's like Fenrir's whole deal is building up this one guy to be powerful, which is fitting, since he's a powerful summon and the guardian of Windurst, in a way.
Absolute Virtue
Tumblr media
This is the best card in the game. This is also the worst card. When I saw Absolute Virtue represented, I had really high hopes for XI. They were sadly dashed, but that doesn't change the fact that this card is amazing. He's proper broken, nearly invincible (any strat to discard him will be patched out), and the art is amazing. Look at that fallen army. Al'taieu is my favorite zone in XI, so seeing it get mentioned makes me very happy.
Shantotto, Tactician Magician
Tumblr media
I HATE SHANTOTTO! SHE'S NOTHING WITHOUT DISSIDIA AND SHE TAKES SLOTS FROM ACTUALLY IMPORTANT CHARACTERS! SHE EVEN LOOKS LIKE DISSIDIA NT! I don't care if this card is good representation (it is for her, being centered around big spells), my hatred for Shantotto is an automatic 50 DKP minus for this damned Taru.
Windurst, Federation Center
Tumblr media
I think whoever was making the XI cards lives in Windurst. Not that I'm complaining, Windurst is also my home. This art is beautiful, I'd love to see more locales from XI done by this artist, cause it's clearly recognizably Windurst Walls with Heavens Tower, and I feel like I can look at this image and picture my path walking there. I love this card.
Forest
Tumblr media
For XI's generic land, we have Ronfaure! I assume, cause of the crabs, and the fact that its music is one of the most popular songs from the game. I love the adventuring party in the center, really gives it that XI vibe.
Cid, Timeless Artificer
Tumblr media
There's one, horrible, Horrible sin they did with this card. Cid's mouth is closed. I need to see his terrifying smile. Beyond that though, it makes me happy to see this Cid get acknowledged, and through him Bastok. The art is really really good. EDIT: MY EYES ARE BAD HIS MOUTH IS OPEN HIS TEETH ARE JUST SKIN COLORED, SIN RETRACTED
XI has 12 out of 309 cards; 3.8% of the set. I am uh, miserable. I know nobody cares about XI, but I really thought this set was gonna be its chance. I wanted to see like, ANY of the heroines. Lilisette, Iroha, Lion, Nashmeira, Arciela, Prishe getting an ACTUAL card, anything! I wanted Zeid! But instead we got some generic mobs, which mainly just feel like they got in cause they're in XIV (and the qutrub, I guess?), and Shantotto since she's all anyone knows. There's some good stuff in here, like Absolute Virtue, Fenrir, and Windurst, but overall I'm sad
Things I would have added: anybody mentioned above, as well as Bastok, San d'Oria, and Jeuno, possibly even Delkfutt's Tower. XI could have gotten a lot of jobs, too, like Puppetmaster! There's a severe lack of villains, like the Shadow Lord, or the Zilart brothers, Ark Angels, god! Anything! You! Reading this! Play XI! The anniversary is now! It's a good game!!!

Fun fact: there's JP retainer dialogue that suggests hrothgar do have rough tongues, by implying they might groom themselves like cats.
Tumblr media
Roughly translated, it's a simple: "Well, I'm off then. I wonder if I should get my fur done..." The key word here is 毛づくろい, which is used for grooming oneself, particularly in reference to animals (social or otherwise). It's a little ambiguous, as apparently it can just mean a general kind of grooming too, but by far the most common result on searching up the word... is cat articles!

It's very funny in retrospect how Final Fantasy XIV's use of legacy writing from earlier editions and preceding games in the series has led to this dissonance as the expansions roll on, where-
Miqo'te (based on mithra from FFXI) - a race where females are far more visible than the males, outnumbering the other gender by far, where sunseeker males fight to become Nunh breeders and moonkeeper males get variations on their mother's name.
Viera (from FFXII) - a race that dwells deep in the woods who virulently distrust outsiders and keep their males protected in their villages while the women hunt and fight.
Hrothgar (based on ronso from FFX and pinching a bit of galka from FFXI*) - a race where males far outnumber the females, who are rarely seen by other races, and as a result the rare female hrothgar are exalted as queens by their kind.
(* = although roegadyn are the most direct descendants of the galka in form and appearance, FFXIV 1.0 nixed the idea of only males appearing and that was later picked up by the hrothgar)
Turali miqo'te, viera & hrothgar visiting the Old World - ...by the sunken gods what is wrong with you people
