A Chance Encounter / Natalie + Owen
Natalie had become the master of frequenting bars. Sure, she had a day job and a side job to keep her flush; but money wasn't an issue. The time was. Endless free time, it seemed, was in her pocket. All she wanted to do was write some exposé, show the world what was really going on, make art, something. Anything. But it had been a long time since inspiration struck like it so often used to. As a result, bars had become her spot, listening in on drunkard's conversations, hoping it'd spark something or another. It never had, but it was more than she'd ever hear if she were in her bed alone.
"How 'bout another?" Natalie asked, sliding her empty shot glass over to Leslie, the bartender. They'd gotten to know each other well, and the female bartender appreciated that Natalie wasn't hitting on her and would actually pay her tab. Plus the fact that she was sane and not violent - more than one could say about the regulars at this bar. Why Natalie had chosen Frankie's, the one bar around Vegas that seemed to host all the alcoholics and not the tourists, she couldn't be sure, except for the fact that it played the oldies she liked and was walking distance from her apartment. Howver, the consistent customers were always so sad. Tonight, there was Lazy-Eye who liked exclusively Jim Beam and red-heads, and then there was PJ and Meredith, who hung out by the corner and either sucked each others faces off or tried to kill each other.
Sighing, Natalie, impatiently drummed her fingers against the counter. There wasn't any new, interesting client to listen in on, and she had no drink to occupy herself with. Maybe she had to move to coffee shops or something. This wasn't working.
Suddenly, though, a male appeared a few seats away from her. Interestingly, he wasn't stinky, he was alone, and he didn't seem to be on drugs. Natalie's interest was immediately piqued. Even if not for inspiration, she hadn't any contact with someone who wanted to talk about something worthwhile in weeks. She had become sort of desperate in a way for interaction, like maybe some sort of normalcy would ignite that creative fire. Maybe, she could hope he could tell a childhood story that would somehow realign all her gears...
Leslie was off attending to PJ and Meredith, and as a result, had ignored Natalie's drink order and everything else but the couple who she had to prevent from breaking all her shot glasses. Half-frustrated and half-curious, Natalie turned to the sanest looking person she'd ever seen in Frankie's and said, "If you want a drink, it's gonna be a while." She shrugged. "But you can pick a song," she said, pointing to the jukebox to her left. A music choice could tell a lot about a person, and at this point, Natalie was happy with whatever reaction she could get from the guy. "Nobody ever even realizes it actually works."
