If you have yet to fall under the spell of yeule, it’s high time you succumb to it now that the artist has announced her debut album Serotonin II, out October 25th via Bayonet Records. Brand new song and video Pixel Affection is the perfect introduction to the Londoner’s habit of reflecting on reality with dreamy, syrupy canvases of purling electronica. She embroiders the daydreamy new ballad with her crystalline, saccharine pop vocals. The video for Pixel Affection, directed by Mitchell DeQuilettes, is part video game simulation and part horror film. It’s centered around a virtual game that distorts a clear sense of reality following different characters of yeule until eventually she violently executes one version of herself for another. Sonically, Pixel Affection evokes shades of Grimes and Poppy, with an Asian pop influenced quirky melodious allure and its exploration of technology in modern connectivity. There’s a pastel wistfulness to its production that also reminds me briefly of Porter Robinson. yeule’s world, which is dreamy and breaches into the unreal, is in fact somewhat inspired by video games, just like Porter’s Worlds was, too.
