Gaadge — Somewhere Down Below (Crafted Sounds)
Tumblr media
Somewhere Down Below by Gaadge
Gaadge has the Swirlies’ trick of slipping slight, vulnerable wobbles of melody in a surging onslaught of guitar noise, so that you grab onto the song part as you submerge, gloriously, in overwhelming, overdriven textures of sound. This third full-length from the Pittsburgh four piece buries catchy pop in distortion-swollen currents, the noise and the hook living right next to each other, ready to fight.
The band has two guitarists. Mitch Delong, who also sings and writes most of the songs, strums and slashes while Andy Yadeski elicits the MBV-ish howl and drone. The drummer Ethan Oliva hits hard as he can go, arms ricocheting to chest level as he knocks out chaotic beats. The bass, played by Nick Boston, spills out in a viscous sludge of noise and dissonance; if you get pulled under, it’s the bass that will catch you by the feet and suck you down into the murk.
“Komarov” lets the roar prevail, its drifting choruses socked in by feedback surges and a continuous earthquake of drums. It’s over fast — in 1:44 to be exact — but leaves a crater in its wake. “Strok” which follows just after is, by contrast, nearly jangle pop, its keening melody punctuated but not swamped by stinging strums.  The best, most elegant stab at pop comes in “Don’t Go There,” with its sly, shout-out melody and ornately twining guitars; you’ll hear a bit of Guided by Voices, a bit of Honey Radar in its quick hit of tunefulness. There’s an element of shoegaze in Gaadge’s rainbow arcing noise, too, best heard on “Mundy’s Highlight,” which will give you a flash of Swervedriver in its sweet, lyrical chaos.
You could draw all sorts of lines to the Ovlov family of bands (Stove, Pet Fox, actual Ovlov), in the way the music buoys while the noise takes on a physical, body-moving presence. When we listen to rock music, we want to be moved, but we also want to be obliterated, and Gaadge does both very well.

We were certainly wrong, 100 percent, on the politics.
Barack Obama rolls into office with Mitt Romney’s health care policy, with John McCain’s climate policy, with Bill Clinton’s tax policy, and George H.W. Bush’s foreign policy. He’s all these things not because the technocrats in his administration think they’re the best possible policies, but because [White House adviser] David Axelrod and company say they poll well.
And [Chief of Staff] Rahm Emanuel and company say we’ve got to build bridges to the Republicans. We’ve got to let Republicans amend cap and trade up the wazoo, we’ve got to let Republicans amend the [Affordable Care Act] up the wazoo before it comes up to a final vote, we’ve got to tread very lightly with finance on Dodd-Frank, we have to do a very premature pivot away from recession recovery to “entitlement reform.”
All of these with the idea that you would then collect a broad political coalition behind what is, indeed, Mitt Romney’s health care policy and John McCain’s climate policy and George H.W. Bush’s foreign policy.
And did George H.W. Bush, did Mitt Romney, did John McCain say a single good word about anything Barack Obama ever did over the course of eight solid years?
No, they fucking did not. No allegiance to truth on anything other than the belief that John Boehner, Paul Ryan, and Mitch McConnell are the leaders of the Republican Party, and since they’ve decided on scorched earth, we’re to back them to the hilt. So the politics were completely wrong, and we saw this starting back in the Clinton administration.
Wow.

hey hope i don't know how involved in 1d drama you are, but harry's documentary came out today and it shows him hanging out with his guitarist mitch a shit ton and now all these people are being disturbingly obsessed with their friendship and now shipping #hitch lmao it's embarrassing what are your thoughts on it? i always love hearing your opinions. do you think they're actually friends or that it's the label pushing this for his sexuality? idk
Just because I don’t talk a lot about 1d drama on here, doesn’t mean I’m not up to date on the newest eye-roll haha. So, yeah I’ve been scanning my dash today and looking at all the posts regarding this.
ehhhhhh I don’t think there’s this huge conspiracy around Harry and his guitarist’s friendship. I just think they’re friends, and either Harry’s management or label decided it would appeal to the masses to spotlight a “bromance” if you will, in the band. This is truly like band pr 101. All band’s have those two members who are magnified for their friendship, and one of them is usually the lead singer while the other one is typically a guitarist lmao (mainly due to the fact that during live performances it’d be easy for the lead singer to interact with the guitarist). Not to say all of these people aren’t great friends, because I’m more than sure that they are, but there is a formula here that most bands have regarding two of the members.
Examples off the top of my head would be:
• Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat from All Time Low
• Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones
• Ashton Irwin and Calum Hood from 5sos
• Paul McCartney and John Lennon from The Beatles
• Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182
• Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy
• Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt from Green Day
• Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from KISS
• Brendon Urie and Dallon Weekes from Panic
• Matty Healy and George Daniel from the 1975
• Josh Dunn and Tyler Joseph of 21p (even though there’s only two members)
those are just off the top of my head honestly because it’s 9 am but there’s a big load of them I know i’m missing especially from the underground scene. It’s no different than this. It’s just obnoxious lol and clearly a selling point for Harry Styles™ because it focuses on two members of the band to promo the whole project. nothing new. it’s just different i suppose to some because of Harry’s sexuality and dramatizing certain friendships of his to appeal to certain parts of his audience *shrugs*
