I'm trying to find what to ship in Yu Yu Hakusho.
I was promised Kurama x Hiei gay subtext, I found nothing. I honestly think Kurama has more " romantic " interaction with both Yusuke and Kuwabara, than Hiei. Like they give me the vibes of good friends thats it. Hiei relationship with Mukuro was great too! I don't know why there were people who hated her, or thought she was his mother figure. It's weird.
The canon romance are great. I mean by that Hiei x Keiko and Kuwabara x Yukina, even Chu x Natsume. Sakyo and Shizuru had potential in the anime, but they barely talk together. That's suck.
I could crack ship Hiei with Botan, because they remind me of Vegeta and Bulma. Also, Botan seem to get along well with his sister. It would be interessing to see a hybrid child from a demon and spirit world parents.
And crack ship Kurama with Mitarai. The latter have water bending power, he could like water Kurama's plant, that's a good reason to ship it right? I can't see Kurama with a demon, the moment he choose humanity over the demon world, for me that mean he should end up with a human. For symbolism. But he could end up with a human with psychic power, like Mitarai.

**YYH AS HELLBOY**
Such a perfect series to sink my teeth into...
Let's see...
Kuwabara x Hiei: Hellboy (Red) x Elizabeth Sherman...
Hellboy: He's a lot more like Kazuma than he is like Yusuke. He doesn't think before he acts, has moments of being a dumb oaf, has a similar temperament to Kuwabara, has a good heart... Fuck, he's a lot like Kazuma when you think about it... loves cats...
Elizabeth Sherman: Hiei has her temperament, she doesn't like attention, has fire powers...
Professor Broom: Shizuru. She takes care of Kazuma and she's point blank, won't kiss your ass and tells you like it is... She's a lot like him, check it out.
Abraham Sapien (Blue): Kurama. His high intelligence and his usual calm, cool, and collected demeanor. He also has a dark past.
Grigori Rasputin: Shinobu Sensui. 'Nough said.
Isla Von Haupstein: Itsuki, Sensui's love interest vice versa...
Karl Ruprecht Kroenen: Elder Toguro. Yeah, he's a monster. A sadistic one, also masochistic.
King Balor: Raizen
Prince Nuada: Yomi... think about it.
Princess Nuala: Kuronue. Because I can.
Tom Manning: Koenma... in all retrospect, if Kazuma had to deal with Koenma like Yusuke does, shit will be flying...
John Myers: Kiyoshi Mitarai.
Johann Kraus: Yusuke Urameshi... poor guy, but he's got more self-control and knows how to get on Kuwabara's nerves. He's also clever and witty, confrontational...and can beat Kazuma easily.

My Review of Toilet Bound Hanako-kun
How did I… *giggles inappropriately like a 7 year old* What the hell kind of anime is this? Does this anime take place on the crapper? Shit, I gotta watch this mess!
And seriously, who animated this? Was it the same guys that did Danganronpa?
Let me see…Studio Lerche…YEP! And that also explains why the main boy is played by Megumi Ogata again!
At Kamome Academy, there’s said to be seven wonders haunting the school. One of the wonders revolves around an apparition by the name of Hanako-kun. Hanako resides in the third stall of the third floor to the girl’s bathroom. It is believed that Hanako has the ability to grant any wish when summoned. We begin our tale with young girl, Nene Yashiro, seeking Hanako’s help to get a young boy to fall in love with her. But when she summons Hanako it is quickly discovered that Hanako is a boy living in a girl’s bathroom stall.
Your guess is as good as mine! Add another questionable character Megumi Ogata plays!
Due to a misunderstanding with a mermaid artifact, Yashiro is now bound to Hanako. Kind of like a slave or a hostage or a new friend. However you interpret this contract! And then there’s this monk in training (named Minamoto) who has a vendetta against Hanako. So we see this guy throughout the series as well.
Let’s have fun with the wacky misadventures of Yashiro, a gung-ho monk, and the toilet-bound spirit, Hanako-kun.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: This is a FUNimation licensed anime and they managed to dub several episodes prior to the COVID pandemic. I never got a chance to watch the dub, so I’ll just focus on the sub. Megumi Ogata is back to play another mysterious boy. And as for Akari Kitou, I’m starting to hear her a lot more often in the last two years. I really enjoyed her as Yashiro. Almost reminds me of her voice in Hitoribocchi! She’s in quite a bit of animes in 2020, so I would watch out for her. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from!
JAPANESE CAST: *Hanako is played by Megumi Ogata (known for Haruka/Uranus on Sailor Moon S, Yukito on CCS, Kurama on Yu Yu Hakusho, Naegi on Danganronpa, Shinji on Evangelion, Ayato on Angel Beats, and Yugi on YGO)
*Yashiro is played by Akari Kitou (known for Aru on Hitoribocchi, Kotoko on In/Spectre, and Kaho on Blend S)
*Minamoto is played by Shouya Chiba
ENGLISH CAST: *Hanako is played by Justin Briner (known for Deku on My Hero Academia, Yukito on CCS: Clear Card, Luck on Black Clover, and Mitarai on Danganronpa 3)
*Yashiro is played by Tia Ballard (known for Happy on Fairy Tail, Yamato on My Love Story, Kagura on Fruits Basket 2019, Komari on Little Busters, Zero Two on Darling in the FranXX, and Megumi on Shiki)
*Minamoto is played by Tyson Rinehart (known for Daru on Steins;Gate, Enji on Tokyo Ghoul, Hifumi on Danganronpa, Matsuda on High School DxD, and Bartolomeo on One Piece)
SHIPPING: At the beginning of the series, it seems as though Yashiro was the type to fall in love easily with pretty-looking boys. But will always meet up with disappointment as all these boys prefer someone else or they suddenly have standards. There’s even a running joke about Yashiro having fat ankles (or daikon legs), that has been a turn-off to some of the boys that she falls for. But a few episodes later, we notice Yashiro having a little crush on Hanako. I shouldn’t question a little girl falling in love with a ghost who loiters around the girl’s bathroom because this is Japan. Absurdity at best! There’s also this sort of admiration that Minamoto has for Yashiro. I really didn’t think too much on that due to this anime laying on the Hanako x Yashiro ship thick. And also…
…
I support Minamoto x Mitsuba.
I found this cute and I really wish for more between these two characters if this series gets a continuation. Don’t at me! I don’t care if Mitsuba’s an apirition and dumbass over here has to exercise demons. This is cute!
ANIMATION: Aside from this animation looking like it came from the ghost of Danganronpa past, I would like to commend this on something else. So one thing I do have to give credit to is that this anime, more often than not feels like you’re reading a manga from the way the design is setup. I just thought that was neat and felt like saying something about that.
ENDING: Pretty much all of the strange anomalies surrounding the school are just rumors (but the ghosts are very much real, just the tales about them are fake). And the one spreading those rumors is Hanako’s twin brother (who is also a ghost), Tsukasa. I should also point out that Hanako’s real name is Amane. But we really shouldn’t worry about this sibling rivalry as we know nothing about how or why Hanako killed his brother and it’s not brought up all that much in the finale. Yeah, this is balls-to-the-wall trippy.
Instead, we get a small arc of Minamoto befriending a spirit named Mitsuba. However this goes south really fast when Mitsuba’s soul is used by one of the seven wonders of the school and is then manipulated by Hanako’s twin brother Tsukasa. After that, Mitsuba is unable to know why he died or even the time he spent with Minamoto is erased.
In the final episode, we kinda go back to aspects of the first episode. As you may recall, Yashiro swallowed a mermaid artifact that makes her turn into a fish whenever she gets wet. Yashiro is visited by two fish spirits who want her to drink this mermaid blood potion so that she can cut the hold Hanako has on her and become the mermaid princess in their realm. Yashiro was kind of in an awkward situation as she cares for Hanako, but is constantly thrown bags of reality at her with how Hanako has treated her since forming the contract. They promise her popularity, a harem of eligible fish bachelors, and an escape from her body issue with her “daikon legs”.
Hey, you’d develop a complex too if people constantly taunt you for having fat ankles!
Anyways, she denied their request. But they were rather persistent and grabbed her by force. Thankfully, Hanako wasn’t far behind and saved her and set the fish packing.
Yashiro and Hanako’s relationship as a whole takes a turn for the better as Yashiro decides to stay by Hanako and he will eventually confide in Yashiro about his past.
This was a unique series. I mean, it was all over the place in where this story was going to go. But in terms of conclusions, not so much! I mean, Hanako’s brother is still spreading rumors around the school and unsuspecting students repeat it despite it being mostly false. We’re unsure of many things about those ghost brothers and the drama that went down when Tsukasa died. Hell, I’m not even sure the manga is that far ahead either. I loved the animation to this. Sure it looks like a Danganronpa clone, but again Studio Lerche animated it. But their direction of making this feel like a colorized manga at times was something I like to commend it for.
Each episode had a nice, quirky vibe to it whenever Hanako’s on the screen. So I say give it a try. It’s not a long series.
FUNimation has all 12 episodes available for streaming. Now that FUNimation is doing simuldubs again, Hanako-kun has a few more episodes available in English.

1. Kurama.
When I was baby queer so deeply closeted I didn't even know it this character was my safe haven. I loved that he was crafty and clever and still incredibly dangerous. I loved that he struggled with balancing mercilessness and compassion. I loved his plant magic especially. He is by turns the most somber and also the most sardonic member of the team and it's always a delight when his sense of humor comes out.
2. The entire semifinal round of the Dark Tournament.
Hiei's double win, Kurama taking on his demon form for the first time, Kuwabara losing twice only for Genkao to hand both Shishi and Suzuki(a) their asses a intercut with Yusuke's final test, some great moments with the Girls, the re-appearance of the Chu, Rinku, Gin, and Touya, and a tender moment between Yusuke and Keiko. Not to mention a brief appearance bully an adorable gay demon couple. The whole round is absolute perfection.
3. Besides Kurama? Koenma. This character goes from nothing but a joke to incredibly complex and riddled with guilt (and gay feelings) in about four seconds flat halfway through Chapter Black. It's really incredible to watch that transformation, see his true power and his much he really cares for his detectives, and feels so responsible for their well-being despite what we've seen to the contrary up to that point.
4. Yukina. Botan. Shizuru. Keiko. Genkai. Kokou. Miyuki (girl deserves better.) Mukuro. I just really love all of them. For a show that is definitely about the four boys I think YYH has some of the most complex and varied rep for women in anime, and very few of them are overtly sexualised.
5. Tarukane. The rest of the evil billionaires (redundant I know) in Black Black Club. Karasu. Elder Toguro. King Yama especially in the manga where he was brainwashing demons to do bad things.
6. Chapter Black. The second half of Dark Tournament. I actually really love the Three Kings Saga.
7. Do the six Dark Tournament boys count?
8. Episode 104: Every Demon for Themself.
Watching Yomi get outwitted, Mukuro is there, Raizen's friends showing up, demon boys passing notes, Kokou, Enki being just the sweetest man alive. A great time for all.
9. Rose Whip. Also Kurama's giant tree attack in his fight with Shigure. Sinning tree is also great.
10. "Nothing as trivial as a violent death or a few drops of demon blood mixed in with mine is gonna stop my from saving the day and kicking the bad guy's ass." -Yusuke
Suzaku has a prophetic line about Yusuke winning their fight not because he's inhuman but because of how human he is that I love.
Genksi's beautiful speech about Yusuke beong owed a chance to stumble around in the darkness.
11. Botan x Shizuru all the way. Those girls deserve each other.
Genkai x Toguro
I've recently boarded the crack ship Hiei x Mitarai I am the only crew member and it is stormy waters will let y'all know how the voyage goes.
I actually really love Yusuke x Keiko.
12. Mukuro and Hiei. Kuwabara and his friends.
13. Daydream Generation.
Subete ga Owatta (Everything is Over) - short version. It's the sad piano music they start using in Chapter Black.
14. Kurama. Touya. Mukuro. Yusuke. Hiei.
15. Genkai and Toguro saying goodbye.
Mitarai talking about becoming a bully.
Kuwabara reflecting on his time with Yusuke right before Yusuke dies fighting Sensui.
Any time Hina is on screen.
17. Mukuro
18. It is both a fond wish and a deep fear.
19. I think the new anomation is pretty but follows recent trends of really flat animation with little shadowing, definitely prefer the original.
20. Randomly saw episode 21 on adult swim July 20th 2002, the next week they went back to the beginning and I got to see the first episode saw no more after that until months later it started airing on Toonami and I caught episode two by complete chance.
21. Oh wow. This could be it's whe own blog post or possible an essay. Maybe even a novella length text. The music, the animation, the characters, the plotlines. There are better anime, better paced, more tightly plotted (FMA Brotherhood comes to mind) but something about Yh Yi Hakusho has really stuck with me. I think it does an excellent job of using fighting as a story-telling device, as plot development. The powers are impressive and the fights look cool but that is never the point. The point is what the fights reveal about the characters, how they bond and learn and grow through fighting their opponents, as a team, each other.
And I've said this before in my most popular blog post but I think there's something really special about a fighting shonen anime with male protagonists from the 90's that advocates softness and relationships.
Kurama and his mother.
Hiei and Mukuro.
Yusuke and Keiko.
Everything about Kuwabara
The bond they share with each other.
The point of the show is that community and friendship and love are more important than glory.
That a quiet life surrounded by our loved ones is the ultimate victory.
And that's why Yu Yu Hakusho is forever.
