Mistonia no Kibou Prelude Short Story - John

First Part

‘.....My lady, have you finished getting ready?’

‘Yes, I’m all done.’

At the sight of Applause’s figure turning back to look at him, John felt slightly pained.

He should already have grown accustomed to Applause’s “current” appearance at this point. But even so when he looked once more at the dark color of her hair and the brand-new maid outfit, there was a lump in his throat; it was as if the reality that she had started moving in earnest towards her goal of revenge was being shoved right in front of him.

(My mistress has lived her life up until now with the thought of vengeance as her only support. To get revenge on the Queen and the Five Families is her sole desire. It’s what she wants.....so I’ll make her wish come true.)

Although he repeated the words in his head as if to remind himself of that, moved by a sudden impulse to stop her, John stretched out an arm towards Applause.

‘.....John?’

‘Your tie’s crooked. Hold still, I’ll fix it for you.’

(My misgivings don’t matter. I can’t go making her feel anxious.)

‘Let’s go over using the pocket watches one last time. Seeing as they’re how we’ll be contacting each other for a while and all.’

‘But didn’t we already do that just yesterday? Sheesh, you really are such a worrywart.’

Despite pouting a little, the expression on Applause’s face seemed somehow happy, making John feel relieved.

‘Come on then, sit next to me. You’ve still got time, right?’

As John beckoned her toward the sofa, Applause obediently sat down.

Last Part

Once they had finished practicing using the pocket watches, Applause rose to her feet.

‘You don’t need to see me off. Rather, don’t come. It’s best we’re seen together as little as possible, right?’

‘That’s true. But I’ll watch over you from the window until you’re out of sight.’

‘Yeah yeah, I get it. You really are-’

‘A worrywart, right? But at least allow me that.....we’re each other’s one and only childhood friend after all.’

‘Yeah, we’ve lived just the two of us all this time. Only the two of us survived.....’

Seeing a dark shadow fall into Applause’s eyes, John suddenly put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close.

‘I’ll be with you until the end.....do you remember what I promised you?’

‘Yes, I remember.’

After breathing a deep sigh, Applause moved back from John as if to firm her resolve.

‘I’ll be going now.’

‘.....Yeah. Take care.’

Once Applause left the room, just as he said he would, John watched over her from the window as she walked away.

Nevertheless, after a moment, he looked away from the glass.

‘”I’ll be with you until the end”, huh.’

Just as he repeated the words despite himself, he sensed an unusual change in the pocket watch he still held in his hand.

(Quit coming out exactly when I don’t want you to. Or perhaps you’re doing it on purpose?)

The sound of a bird’s wings flapping entered John’s ears as he bit down on his lip. It was the sound he least wanted to hear right now.

2024 Otome Game Progress + Year in Review

So unlike last year where I was game hopping like crazy, proud to report I actually finished every game that I started this year with the exception of the ones I’m still playing. Unfortunately, apart from White World, 9 R.I.P. and Bustafellows S2, didn’t get much done on the partially finished list since I played a bunch of new releases instead, but we’ll see how I go in the new year…
