Fediverse block lists for intersex folks
Perisex people on social media sites love to drown the intersex tag with porn. It's a chilling and sometimes violent reminder to us actually intersex people that this is how perisex people see us.
It's a problem here on Tumblr and it's a problem on every other social media site I know of.
I've been using the Fediverse (Mastodon, etc) for a while now. It's a social network system that is based on open-source code and community self-hosting. I host intersex.social, a Fediverse server specifically for intersex folks.
On the Fediverse, you can block individual users and you can also block entire servers. So I have two block lists: specific users, and the servers/instances that host these users.
If intersex-tagged porn is a problem for you, I recommend using the server block list, as it is more comprehensive. If banning/muting by server feels too broad, use the user list.
This is a post I plan to edit periodically, so if you're seeing a reblogged version, click here to the url of the original post.
Servers
(these are all muted by default on intersex.social)
botsin.space chitter.xyz dook.business equestria.social furries.club gulp.cafe macrofurs.social mastodon.art meow.social transfur.socia wolfhaus.me yiff.life
Users
If you're on the list
If you are on this list and would like to be removed from this block/mute list, first edit the offending posts. Go through what you have posted on the intersex tag and remove that tag from anything pornographic. (Considering using more suitable tags like #bigenital #ambigenital as appropriate)
Once you've fixed the offending posts, send me a DM at @[email protected] and I'll take you off the list.

Why you should make a Misskey/Shonk.Social/Mastodon account.
Hi lol. As a trans artist who has been incredibly frustrated with tumblr censoring lgbt content and general transphobia. Eat shit Matt.🔨🚗💥 I wanted to offer a small guide about activitypub servers. Considering Tumblr and Threads wish to integrate with activitypub services.
It truly doesn't matter what instance or server you pick. There are a lot of them that within each individual one hosts thousands of smaller communities. You can also make your own servers and instances!
Other good servers.
Point of the matter is, you can follow anyone from any instance and have them on our dashboard. You can follow someone from mastodon and still use misskey.io Or (eventually) follow someone from tumblr on shonk.social.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or even make your own instance. The best part is say one of these sites has another CEO meltdown, or they have harmful policies, you can migrate to another instance without losing followers or our posts.
Tumblr media
From our experiences Misskey.io is similar to twitter AO3 and deviantart with no censorship regarding artwork (so long as you mark it as explicit). Which is good and bad. That means they allow drawn nsfw lgbt content and sex work. However being a japanese instance they allow drawn loli shota and noncon. Therefore I highly recommend using an instance blocklist and blocking any terms or words in relation. There are hatespeech instances and conspiracy instances of course. And it is always good to be aware of when a server becomes toxic. Luckily with instances and account migration we can pack up and leave. The reason I'm on Misskey currently is because its the biggest server and there are more utilities than shonk such as animated banners, decorations, and community outreach.
Mastodon works but the UI is incredibly bland and uncustomizable. It also feels mostly dead.
Shonk.Social is a fork of Misskey that is a safe lgbt space. It is a very small server currently but the people who code it are incredibly passionate. Their boosts and global timelines are really good ways to keep up to date on other servers.
Tumblr media
You've also got custom emojis, lists, channels, antennae.
Tumblr media
There's also cookie clicker LOL
Tumblr media
But all the same I highly recommend it. If tumblr decides to feature activitypub integration we could eventually follow people from tumblr on any instances without all of the Transphobic ceos and app breaking ads.

hi! about the "learn how it works before you start making assumptions" about the bluesky post and its networks; what assumptions should we be looking out for? that its not twitter and not everyone is going to be connected like on there? your description of federated networks is understandable, but the default domain it seems to have at signup is bluesky's. I feel like most people would be using this, and only people looking for a certain thing and knowingly leaving that "sphere" will know that theyre isolating to a different community.
I'm new to this too and theres very very minimal, well explained things about it online, and youre the only person I've come across who seems to know anything, so if you have more advice to share I'd appreciate it!
as much as I would like to answer this as an authority and really contribute to the nascent understanding of federated instances as an alternative to current social media platforms, the fact of the matter is that im not. i have a basic understanding of the way in which they work and how to use them, and I dont think im the best source of information. this being the case, since i did bring it up and i did get an ask, i'll try to explain the best i can.
the "fediverse" (dont mind the silly name, we know its silly) might best be explained with the similarities to email. Misskey, Mastodon, and others marketing themselves as federated instance platforms are basically like if you took your email account and stapled twitter to it: Misskey/Mastodon are not platforms themselves, so much as they are frameworks for web servers that connect to one another independently and are run by individuals. These frameworks are usually open source, have different alternative forks that offer different additional features/ui elements, and ultimately all connect to one another regardless. but they are not "platforms" like tumblr or twitter or facebook. anyone can make their own federated instance, and what that instance looks like depends on what framework they used to set it up.
Bluesky and Threads are different. Bluesky differs in that it is run on a private protocol-- it runs differently to the protocols used by the aforementioned open source alternatives and currently cannot connect with them. It's still in beta and its too early to call how it will operate. Threads, like Bluesky, is also a private protocol. At current, it merges your information with other Facebook/Meta products (facebook, instagram, etc). Supposedly, these will eventually be able to communicate with the Fediverse at large, but you should keep a great amount of suspicion with them, as both are run by billionaires. Bluesky is the project of the former head of twitter, and Threads obviously belongs to Zuckerburg and Facebook.
If you head about "x platform is homophobic/racist" in reference to the earlier federated instance frameworks, understand this very crucial thing about Mastodon/Misskey/etc:
They are not websites. They do not have established moderation policies and staff dedicated to managing who posts what.
as stated, Masto/Misskey are just server frameworks. Each federated instance using those frameworks is run by individuals on their own private web servers that they either operate themselves or rent out from a company. the largest Misskey instance, Misskey.io, is currently under fire for having homophobic moderation practices. This does not mean that every instance of Misskey is moderated with homophobia in mind, and homophobic moderation tools are not built into the code of Misskey.
As the old guard of web 2.0 crumbles, the internet is changing again. whether we fall back into the ad-friendly hellhole of yesteryear or we enter a new phase of the internet's wild west depends on platform migration patterns and whether or not people develop some pretty basic web and internet literacy that's been lost over the last 20 years as the internet corporatized and users had to learn less and less about how the websites they used work. my explanation here probably has incorrect information and holes in it, but that is because i, myself, do not fully understand the total extent to which the fediverse and federated protocols operate; i, too, am a layman.
that being said, i hope this was helpful to anyone trying to figure this stuff out. i've already carved my own space on a small, invite-only instance with friends, but i've got no plans to move shop until this place really does burn down to the ground. hope that helps. good luck!

A warning to anyone trying out the fediverse/Mastodon
There's a large cluster of people who are basically an alliance of photomatts and (if you're on Twitter) Jai orbiters who try to police the various servers to isolate people they deem to be undesirables.
They are deeply transmisogynistic and unhinged, in ways that make photomatt's recent behaviour seem downright enlightened in comparison.
A recent good summary of what's going on is posted here.
A much lengthier history of this drama (which has been going on for years) has been put up by a kindly anon here.
The fediverse isn't all like this, but you do need to watch out which server you make your account on.
General red flags to avoid:
any involvement with "The Bad Space"
mastodon.art
users who frequently post to the #FediBlock hashtag
use of automated or shared blocklists (these are for entire servers blocking other servers, not individual accounts)
reasons for blocking a server mentioning "oliphaunt" or "tier" anything
As a general rule, you will want to coordinate with your mutuals which servers you go to as much as possible, to minimize the chances that you end up on different instances and end up getting cut off from each other until at least one of you makes an alt so you're both on servers that communicate with each other. This takes a bit of trial and error but unfortunately that is the nature of a decentralized social networking system.
So all that said... I really hope staff smarten up, Matt gets put in his place by his and Tumblr's lawyers and we can all stay where we are.

So in light of the post about Tumblr staff being cut down to a skeleton crew - whether it's real or not - I really suggest anything other than twitter or instagram. Twitter is run by a fascist and Instagram is run by FB. Threads is also run by FB.
I recommend two things. Firstly, Wordpress accounts can be followed by folks on the Fediverse, so if you want to post long posts like you can here on Tumblr, you can do that on Wordpress and have folks on the fediverse find your posts.
Want to follow my Wordpress blog? Follow me here! I reblog a lot of my longer feminism posts.
However, to follow people on the fediverse back, and do microblogging, you're going to need something else. I suggest Misskey/Calckey/Firefish/Iceshrimp:
Tumblr media
It has a tumblr-like feel and medium-length posts for blogging. I'm [email protected].

I typed a message to the @tumblr team about copying a feature from @wordpress & @wordpressdotcom that allows the latter two to automatically post snippets with links to Mastodon.
I know activating ActivityPub within Tumblr is currently expensive…
…so a better option would be to flirt with the Fediverse instead via auto share. At least until ActivityPub support comes to the Tumblverse (I still believe ActivityPub activation should be a premium feature for those with custom domains as an anti-spam measure).
It would also be cool if Tumblr could embrace other platforms beyond Mastodon such as:
Misskey
Pleroma
Firefish
Threads (in the future)
…but that might be asking too much. Maybe…it would be cool if they supported the others though.

YOOOO this is a long shot, but is anyone else on Misskey.io?? I made an account after rubbernecking some of the art drama involving it on twitter (lol), and I'm excited to hang out as a polite guest on the Japanese side of the internet, but I'm already running into some minor problems not covered by the site's FAQs or anything I can find on google. Help me look like I know what I'm doing over there!! Thank u.
