What He had minded is that I failed to own up to the things I’ve done, spent an entire lifetime across from my only child never acknowledging her connection to me. I suspect she knew. She acted at times like she did though she never held over my head that she knew. Never let past her lips how I had denied her. Alton Combs was good in that way. Accepted the role he’d played in our sin and settled into raising a daughter alone, his daughter, lost to me forever. Took the greatest responsibility when he was least to blame. He lay down with me to squelch my desires, to put an end to my relentless pursuit. Not that I could have resisted that man had he wanted me, but he never did.
