Children of farmers in the Yamuna River bank now have a secured future

Early morning prayers followed by the session of physical exercises is the daily routine of the school which is performed with utmost devotion like a sacred tradition. It is only after this that we start with our daily academic lessons. Well all this routine is also followed by the 250 students of Smile Foundation’s Mission Education centre in Hathi Basti, East Delhi on the banks of the river Yamuna. But there is one big difference between our schooling and theirs. These students don’t have an access to proper classrooms in their school. They mostly study in open with mats spread on the floor. There are some classes which actually are temporary sheds made from haystacks and bamboos.

With little access to public transport, going to school was a far-fetched idea for these kids. Most of the inhabitants of Hathi Basti are farmers or laborers with very little income to spare, therefore sending their kids even to a government school a difficult affair. Many students in the centre have never been to school before. In fact, maximum number of the children here are first generation learners of their family who are attending school.

From giving a foundation course of LKG to toddlers to providing remedial classes to seniors, the centre offers an all-inclusive educational curriculum. On a daily basis, classes of four hours are held in two shifts – morning and afternoon at the centre. The school also provides two times meal to the students so that parents send their children regularly, furthermore reducing the dropout rates.

Parents seem even disinterested to send their children to school as to them the children are the extra working hands on the farm, which is a much greater support to their family. Sonu, a student of 7th standard dropped out of school to do the household chores after his mother expired two years back. His father is a daily wager. After his father leaves for his daily work, Sonu would take care of his younger brothers. He used to prepare lunch and dinner regularly for his family. In such a situation his studies stopped. Since the main problem was the accessibility to food, teachers asked him to pack two time meals provided by the school for his family and insist his father to enroll all of his children in school. As his father agreed, his all three sons now regularly attend school.

Since many of the students parents work in rose plantation. It is a beautiful sight as children bring roses for the teachers in school. This is the school where children go, play and learn with great enthusiasm. Their brightened faces, endorsed with their beautiful innocent smiles, not just make us realize of the true happiness but also remind us of our responsibility to maintain this smile.

The centre is a hope towards a better and secure tomorrow. The fragrance of positivity mesmerizing like that of their roses is spread throughout the centre. I would say that these children motivate me to be a responsible and optimist person.
