(Madge x Rye drabble)

“Good morning, Madge.”

Monday morning, he asked if he could walk me to school to which I suspiciously obliged. We talked about Pride and Prejudice, as it turns out we both read it during lockdown. I kept waiting for him to flirt with me, if only to confirm what I suspected about him all along. He did not.

Tuesday I came down with Les Miserables in my hand, just in case he was there. He was. He didn't ask to walk with me, he just did it, like we had some sort of silent agreement (we didn’t.) He never read it and I let him borrow it, as he no longer has access to the school library. Turns out he has a lot of spare time when he’s working the counter and it’s not rush hour. I hope for him to flirt with me. He does not.

On Wednesday he doesn’t show up, and I berate myself for feeling disappointed. Surely he has better things to do than to walk to school with a book nerd. Turns out he was working, and when I go by the bakery in late afternoon he acts like nothing is amiss.

Today is Thursday and he is standing in my front step.

I absolutely love Delly. This is all thanks to Periwinkles and her amazing way to bring to life characters that we know very little 🫶

Katniss description of Delly is very Katniss.

I understand why she wasn’t in the movies. And if she was she would have had very little time and no development at all.

She came back to 12 and help reconstruct the district… and eventually marries Thom and they live happily ever after.

Sadly I don’t have a fan cast

Saturday mornings are always busy at the bakery. Most people tend to buy their pastries on the weekend (the ones that can usually afford them), so we need to make larger quantities, plus the birthday cakes for the celebrations that usually take place on the weekend as well.

It’s been almost a week since we last saw Mom. Wheat went to see her yesterday, as she’s staying with her sister. He told us she looked fine but as soon as he realized neither me nor Rye were inclined to talk about her, he changed the subject. I still don’t know if he told Dad about it. I sure hope not.

The fact that she is gone has escalated the amount of work, but only slightly, as there are four of us to pick up the slack. We still had to adjust our schedules and that is why I’m working with dad today, while Rye and Wheat tend to the counter.

“So, I heard a little bit of gossip yesterday.”

This morning when I got up from the couch where I passed out last night I was on autopilot. I took a shower, pulled a clean suit from the closet, managed to eat a little bit of Sae's stew from last night (because I know I won't be eating again before we reach the train) when I realize what I'm doing. There's no reaping today. There hasn't been one in three years. I lose the tie and get comfortable on the couch for a few more hours of sleep when I hear a knock at the door.

"What are you doing here kid? It's not a Thursday."

"No, but you said you wanted to be there, when it happened."

CHAPTER 11 (really just a Thom x Delly drabble)

"Is it just me or is this really awkward?"

She gives me a smile with just a hint of shyness and I can feel my ears turning warm. Katniss assured me she wanted to meet, but now as she's kneeling in front of me, with my foot in her hands, I'm feeling more self conscious than ever.

"I hope you don't think I'm overstepping by coming here."

She places her hand on my forearm and ahakes her head furiously.

"What? No! I'm really glad you showed up, I was just caught off guard. The only reason why I didn't do a house to house search for you today was because I promised Peeta I wouldn't. Ugh, I shouldn't have said it, you'll think I'm crazy. My name's Delly by the way. Delly Cartwright."

She speaks at double speed than any other person I have ever talked to, her blond waves bouncing with her energy.

I don't think you're crazy, I think you're adorable.

THE TRAIN BACK TO TWELVE- CHAPTER 16

Week 7 - Delly

"Saul, where have you been? You nearly missed lunch!"

I'm already sitting down with my plate next to Leevy, who's by herself today. In fact the camp is mostly deserted, even at lunch time. That's not usually the case, but because they are working on the far side of town today, Mr Norbert asked us to deliver their lunch there. I, of course, excused myself. Not even the cleaning of our old house site was enough to encourage me to go there. Luckily, the Steiners volunteered to run the errand.

"I haven't seen you all morning, where were you?" I ask running a hand through his sweaty forehead. He tries to dodge it, and gives me a pointed look. Right, no affection in front of others.

"I was in town. At the cobbler shop. " He tells me slowly as he waits expectantly for me to comprehend each word. He's waiting for my scolding, but how could I scold him, really? Not because of this. Never because of this.

"You shouldn't have gone by yourself. " I finally tell him.

"I wasn't alone. Thom was with me the whole time. "

I am filled with relief and warmth. It brings me back to our first day here, on the train ride, Thom looking out for Saul even before he officially met him. If I'm being honest, I'd say by the end of the first day I already had a soft spot for the gentle miner. And the thing about Thom Campbell is that he would probably do that for every single person in this camp. And that just makes me fall for him even harder.

I run my hand through Saul's hair, trying to comb it a bit and this time he doesn't try to escape.

"How are you?" I ask him.

He looks at me, and for a moment it seems like my mom's eyes are piercing me.

" I'm ok. It wasn't… I thought it would be unbearable, but… it wasn't. I cried for a while but not as much as in Thirteen. It was like… like finishing a chapter and turning a page in a book. "

I notice him fighting back tears again, but he's also putting on a brave front for me.

"That 's profound." I say.

"Actually, I heard Thom say it to Peeta, but I thought it sounded good. And accurate." He tells me with a shrug of his shoulders.

"Peeta was there?"

"Yeah, they were cleaning the bakery site too."

I don't know if I should feel proud of him or scared something might have gone wrong. He's doing a lot better than he was last year, but I was the one to tell Peeta what happened to his family and it escalated to one of the worst attacks he ever had.

"How was he? Did it trigger an attack or something?"

"He seemed fine. I mean not fine, but… not crazy. Katniss was with him."

"I should probably still check on them, after lunch."

Luckily he has Katniss now, but she still has a lot of bad days too, and who knows what sort of a spiral that visit might have thrown her into.

"No way! Don't you dare Delly, I FORBID YOU TO GO!" Saul gets up, his loud voice drawing every pair of eyes around camp to us.

"What? Saul, I just want to check if they're alright, they went through a lot already and…"

"And you'll make Thom upset again, Delly! He thinks you like Peeta!"

I stare at him with an open mouth as his words hit me with full force.

"What? How… how do you know …?"

"He told me! Because I actually talked to him! He thinks you like Peeta and he thought you two had something going on before Peeta's games." Saul's angry at me ever since Thom backed off, and it shows. He argued that I probably did something to push him away and it's only now that I realize he might have had a point.

"Why would he…"

"You're sort of there all the time, Delly." Leevy tells me and I almost forgot she was here. "To be honest, I was your classmate for years and I kind of thought you and Peeta were an item too, before the games happened."

I sit completely dumbfounded. I start backtracking in my mind to that fateful storm when Saul and I took refuge in Thom's tent. Peeta arrived

the following day. I wasn't there when Thom woke up because I went to Victor's village to help Peeta settle down.

"He thinks…"

"Yep." Saul answers with a loud popping sound

"Did you tell him nothing ever …"

"Yep."

"Did he believe you?"

"You tell me." He says, as he takes something from his pocket and extends his hand towards me.

Two needles. Not regular sewing needles. Large and curved, like the ones we used for the shoe soles.

"Where did you get that?" I ask him, my eyes instantly filling with tears.

"I sifted through the ashes. Thom helped. The first one was actually a stroke of luck, we found it just after about half an hour. The other one took us the whole morning and half of lunch break, but Thom didn't want to give up, he wanted you to have one too."

Thom, you stupid fool.

I get up abruptly, shoving my plate into Saul's hands. "That's it, I'm going to town." And I take off on a run.
