LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
November 16, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
NOV 17, 2023
The summit of the leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies continued today in San Francisco, California.
Formed in 1989, APEC is made up of the economies of 21 nations around the Pacific Rim: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Chile, Peru, Russia, Vietnam, and the United States. Together, these economies make up about 62% of global gross domestic product and almost half of global trade.
David Sanger of the New York Times today noted an apparent shift in the power dynamic between President Joe Biden and Chinese president Xi Jinping, who met yesterday for a four-hour conversation. Earlier in his presidency, Xi was riding on a strong economy that overshadowed that of the U.S. and looked as if it would continue to do so. Then, Xi favored what was known as “wolf warrior” diplomacy: the aggressive defense of China’s national interests against what Chinese envoys portrayed as foreign hostility, especially that of the U.S.
Under that diplomatic regime, Xi emphasized that liberal democracy was too weak to face the twenty-first century. The speed and momentous questions of the new era called for strong leaders, he said. In early February 2022, Russia and China held a summit after which they pledged that the “[f]riendship between the two States has no limits.”
Things have changed.
The U.S. has emerged from the coronavirus pandemic with a historically strong economy, while China’s economy is reeling from a real estate bubble and deflation at the same time that government crackdowns have made foreign capital flee. This summer, Xi quietly sidelined Qin Gang, the foreign minister associated with wolf warrior diplomacy, and in October, he replaced Defense Minister General Li Shangfu, who is under U.S. sanctions for overseeing weapon purchases from Russia.
Indeed, China has also been quietly pushing back from its close embrace of Russia. Just weeks after their February 2022 declaration, Russia invaded Ukraine in an operation that Russian president Vladimir Putin almost certainly expected would be quick and successful, permitting Russia to seize key Ukrainian ports and land. Such a victory would have strengthened both Russia and China at the same time it weakened Europe, the United States, and their allies and partners.
Instead, Ukraine stood firm, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and allies and partners have stood behind the embattled country. As the war has stretched on, sanctions have cut into the Russian economy and Putin has had to cede power to Xi, accepting the Chinese yuan in exchange for Russian commodities, for example. This week, Alberto Nardelli of Bloomberg reported that the European Union is considering another round of sanctions, including a ban on the export of machine tools and machinery parts that enable Russia to make ammunition.
In a piece at the Center for European Policy Analysis today, Julia Davis, who monitors Russian media, noted that Russia lost an extraordinary 997,000 people between October 2020 and September 2021, even before the war began. Now it is so desperate to increase its population that its leadership claims to have stolen as many as 700,000 Ukrainian children and is urging women to have as many children as possible.
Holly Ellyatt of CNBC noted that to the degree they even mentioned it, Russian media sniped at the Biden-Xi summit, but it was hard to miss that although Russian president Putin was not welcome to attend, Xi came and engaged in several high-level meetings, assuring potential investors that China wants to be friends with the U.S. Also hard to miss was Xi’s pointed comment that the China-U.S. relationship “is the most important bilateral relationship in the world.”
Going into this summit, then, the U.S. had the leverage to get agreements from China to crack down on the precursor chemicals that Chinese producers have been shipping to Latin America to make illegal fentanyl, restore military communications between the two countries now that Li has been replaced, and make promises about addressing climate change. Other large issues of trade and the independence of Taiwan will not be resolved so easily.
Still, it was a high point for President Biden, whose economic policies and careful investment in diplomatic alliances have helped to shift the power dynamic between the U.S. and two countries that were key geopolitical rivals when he took office. Now, both the U.S. and China appear to be making an effort to move forward on better terms. Indeed, Chinese media has shifted its tone about the U.S. and the APEC summit so quickly readers have expressed surprise.
Today, Biden emphasized “the unlimited potential of our partnerships…to realize a future that will benefit people not only in the Asia-Pacific region but the whole world,… [a] future where our prosperity is shared and is inclusive, where workers are empowered and their rights are respected, where our economies are sustainable and resilient.”
Biden and administration officials noted that companies from across the Asia-Pacific world have invested nearly $200 billion in the U.S. since Biden took office, creating tens of thousands of good jobs, while the U.S. has elevated its engagement with the region, holding bilateral talks, creating new initiatives and deepening economic partnerships.
Today, Biden and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced that the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, an economic forum established last year as a nonbinding replacement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership former president Trump abruptly pulled out of, had agreed on terms to set up an early warning system for disruptions to supply chains, cooperation on clean energy, and fighting corruption and tax evasion.
In a very different event in San Francisco today, a federal jury convicted David DePape, 43, of attempted kidnapping and assault on account of a federal official’s performance of official duties for his attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul with a hammer on October 28 of last year, fracturing his skull.
DePape’s lawyers did not contest the extensive evidence against him but tried to convince the jury that DePape did not commit a federal crime because he did not attack Pelosi on account of Representative Pelosi’s official position. Instead, they said, DePape had embraced the language of right-wing lawmakers and pundits and believed in a conspiracy theory that pedophile elites had taken over the country and were spreading lies about former president Donald Trump.
DePape told jurors he had come to conspiracy theories through Gamergate, a 2014–2015 misogynistic online campaign of harassment against women in the video game industry, which turned into attacks on feminism, diversity, and progressive ideas. Trump ally Steve Bannon talked of pulling together the Gamergate participants behind Trump and his politics.
Also today, a subcommittee of the House Ethics Committee set up to investigate allegations against Representative George Santos (R-NY) issued its report. The Republican-dominated committee found that Santos had lied about his background during his campaign and, furthermore, that he appears to be a serial liar. Those lies also “include numerous misrepresentations to the government and the public about his and his campaign’s financial activities.”
That is, the committee found, Santos defrauded his campaign donors, falsified his financial records, and used campaign money on beauty products, rent, luxury items from Hermes and Ferragamo, and purchases at the website Only Fans. The subcommittee recommended the Ethics Committee refer Santos to the Department of Justice, and “publicly condemn Representative Santos, whose conduct [is] beneath the dignity of the office” and who has “brought severe discredit upon the House.”
Santos says he will not run for reelection.

Labor shortages set up Malaysia for third year of palm oil losses
Malaysian plantations are experiencing their biggest labour/manpower shortage since the palm oil business began in 1917. Malaysian palm oil planters are letting thousands of metric tonnes of fruits rot because a labour shortage has stopped them from boosting harvesting during the peak production season for the third year in a row.
Palm oil output in Malaysia, the world's second largest producer, is anticipated to dip or remain steady from last year's 18.1 million metric tonnes, according to planters and experts. Despite the lifting of coronavirus-related hiring restrictions, plantations across Southeast Asia are experiencing their worst labour crisis since the industry's inception in 1917, with migrant workers, who make up the majority of the industry's labour force, arriving at a "snail's pace," according to Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA) chief executive Joseph Tek.
Businesses are unable to fully profit from the main harvest season, which spans from August to November, due to a dearth of competent harvesters, postponing a boost in growth from recent rains. Malaysian production gaps will bolster prices for benchmark crude palm oil futures, the world's most traded vegetable oil, which have lost half their value since reaching a high in March. Travel restrictions imposed in 2020 to combat the COVID-19 epidemic have left Malaysia's palm oil sector without the 120,000 foreign employees required to tend plants and collect fruit bunches.
Following that, oil palm yields fell to near 40-year lows in the 2020-2021 marketing year, contributing to a greater worldwide edible oil scarcity caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As a result, palm oil prices reached new highs in March, driving up the prices of groceries, detergent, and other palm oil-based items. However, palm oil prices have fallen since then due to the restart of exports from competitor Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, and a resurgence in global oilseed production, with projections of all-time high soybean output in the United States and Brazil.
Slow return of workers
Malaysia's palm sector expected labour problems to improve once the government relaxed the COVID-19 recruiting moratorium in February, with the MPOA anticipating 52,000 foreign workers to arrive. However, just a few hundred workers have arrived, owing to sluggish government permits and worries over labour safeguards.
According to the MPOA, just 12% of migrant worker permissions issued to firms in Malaysia across all industry sectors have resulted in boots on the ground. Migrants, primarily from Indonesia and Bangladesh, account for over 80% of the employment on Malaysian estates.
FGV Holdings, the world's largest producer of crude palm oil, reported receiving 647 migrant workers this year, but only filling 62% of its needed workforce. FGV said in a stock market statement on August 30 that it expects to hire 7,000 foreign workers by the end of the year. However, any new employees will miss the critical peak harvest season.
According to the MPOA, when harvesting time at certain plantations increases from 10 to 15 days to 90 days, growers are losing up to a fifth of their harvests. It anticipates that unrealized agricultural and palm product potential losses might surpass 20 billion ringgit ($4.44 billion) by the end of the year. - www.rappler.com

***All these links are watchable as of October 2021. Since this list is for classic films it includes some countries that no longer exist. Not every country is included here because not every country had a film industry or has films available on YouTube. I recommend looking up any film on here that you watch as a lot of them have very interesting backstories. “No subs” means no English subtitles. They may have subtitles in other languages.
Please don’t let a lack of subtitles stop you from trying a movie from another country. Movies, especially silent ones, can be understood and enjoyed regardless of language barriers! <3

Corea News: The Queen Expectant and Radiant
APRIL 14, 2021
We are counting down the days to the queen’s due date. We haven’t seen her around much.
Her last public appearance was on White Day, in March, when she and the king attended the UAAC Baseball season pre-opening friendly match
We weren’t given permission to publish those photos, and many of them have been taken down because of the kerfuffle over the queen’s watch. See our report here.
It seems Corea is much more conservative about protecting their queen than we thought.
The palace website’s static banner is still up, saying the queen and the baby are both well, and that Their Majesties are thankful for everyone’s concern and well-wishes.
No word about where the queen is currently residing. We do know they’ve left Pyeongchang. And we also know that there’s a tradition that the heir is born in Gwangyeongjeon.
VIP 7, the royal wing recently reopened (and unexpectedly used in November during the queen’s accident) in CorGen, is now completed and sealed, should Her Majesty choose to have her delivery there
It’s also another tradition that media photos are now cropped.
While lucky Corean citizens and I (I live here with a working visa, so I count myself lucky) have seen the royal baby belly on television, international people who are also in love with these royals would see nothing. Nada. Zilch.
The queen would only appear in print and online in cropped photos.
Something about protecting the baby from evil eyes.
And if you want to test the terrifying efficiency of the Royal Public Affairs Office, be my guest. We’ve had reports that disallowed photos of the queen disappear in less than ten seconds.
Corea is one of the most modern and advanced in its technology and tolerance, but it does still have these charming quirks, and we respect them!
The king is currently away. Along with the king and queen of Bhutan, the sultan of Brunei, and the agong of Malaysia, these royal heads of Asia are going to the United Kingdom to pay their respects to the queen of the United Kingdom on the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
The funeral will be held on April 17. See our report on the expected royal guests here.
Because we miss her so much, here’s a recap of all our Queen Sightings.
Read on AO3.
Who could forget this? Corea was stunned at the queen showing more leg than she had ever done. Her Majesty was spotted arriving at Cheongwadae for the Prime Minister’s private party last winter.
It’s testimony to the queen’s popularity that she got zero criticism. If she did, no one was brazen or bold enough to make it public.
Royal watchers (and ahjummas, elite and non-elite), say this is still perfectly within the unspoken royal proprieties and the fingertip rule applied to schoolgirls (the fingertip rule: your hemline shouldn’t be shorter than your fingertips).
The queen also only went to a private gathering among friends, which the king also attended. The press had been allowed to take photographs but it was not a public event.
Her Majesty in the Winter Palace. Released by the Royal Public Affairs Office in January.
This is the last, full-sized media photo we have before the palace quietly but efficiently released the request for the queen’s photos to be cropped.
Also in January, a close up of the Queen’s perfect skin, also released by the Royal Public Affairs Office. Location unspecified.
February 5: Her Majesty’s televised message for the Annual Children’s Ball in Busan, for the first time held as an actual ball for kids, bouncy castle and all!
February 25: Several lucky students in schools around Busan were lucky enough to have been visited by Her Majesty before or during their commencement exercises.
March 1: The queen attended a panel for Zero Discrimination Day at the Royal Hall of Justice, the first panel of its kind pioneered by the Attorney-General, Gong Ae-ra.
March 1: That evening, when Their Majesties attended a concert for Zero Discrimination Day
April 4: Their Majesties in their joint Easter message, both of them just looking so beautiful. Is it any wonder they’re the world’s most favorite royals?
We hope the king comes home soon! This author understands social obligations, but Pyeha, with all due respect-- well, I’m sure you’re already impatient to be home and I don’t need to nag. Far be it from me!
Let me know what you think! A lot of little details here meant as companion to Winter Palace 2. And the rest of what comes next :)
And yes, it's backdated. I'd blame my job but I also love my job but yeah, I blame it.

Archive: The ups and downs of Raikkonen's 2007 F1 title triumphBy:
Adam Cooper
Sep 1, 2021, 8:53 PM
With two races to go in the 2007 Formula 1 season, Kimi Raikkonen appeared down and out. His recovery of a 17-point deficit as McLaren's challenge imploded is one of the greatest comebacks in F1's history and, on the occasion of the Finn announcing his retirement, we dug out the 25 October 2007 Autosport magazine feature explaining his remarkable title season
It took a long time but Kimi Raikkonen has finally won the world championship title that he so clearly deserves. And, of course, it came at the expense of McLaren after his own two near misses with the British team in 2003 and '05.
This was an extraordinary season for the Finn that began with an oh-so-easy victory in Australia that proved to be a false dawn. It was followed by a series of frustrating races that even led some to speculate his future with the team was in doubt. Yet, once everything clicked, Raikkonen was more often than not the man to beat, a position that was obscured by the headline-grabbing battle between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.
He had a lot of catching up to do. It's hard to believe now that he was as much as 17 points behind Hamilton at the end of the Japanese Grand Prix, with only 20 up for grabs over the final two races. And a few laps into that race, when he languished at the back after a disastrous strategy gamble by the team, he was staring at a title-losing 23-point deficit.
It's easy to overlook how much is involved when a frontrunning driver changes teams. Raikkonen had, after all, spent five full seasons at McLaren, and was used to the Woking team's systems and way of doing things. Moving over from Renault, the team he'd grown up with, Alonso faced similar challenges.
But Raikkonen undoubtedly had the more difficult job, for he was also filling the shoes of Michael Schumacher. In addition, the departure of Ross Brawn meant he was joining a team that was under serious pressure to maintain its equilibrium, and had also lost the advantages conferred by its special relationship with Bridgestone.
Raikkonen was also up against a team-mate who not only had a year's head start, but enjoyed a special relationship with the team boss. It could all have gone horribly wrong - like it did for Alonso - and the fact it didn't was a reflection of Raikkonen's ability to focus on what really matters.
Alonso had a slight advantage over Raikkonen in that he had a day in a McLaren in December, which accelerated the getting-to-know-each-other process. Kimi had to wait until January until he was free to drive a red car for the first time.
There was a limited amount of testing before Melbourne, and a great deal to learn. And perhaps trickiest of all was the transition from Michelin to Bridgestone, something that caught out many drivers.
"The Bridgestones were like playing on a different field," says David Robertson, who co-managed Raikkonen with son Steve. "Kimi and Alonso struggled. Lewis [Hamilton] when he was on the Michelins [in his early McLaren testing] struggled like hell - he couldn't do anything. He went to the Bridgestones, and it was 'this is it!', because that's the playing field he was used to being on. That's what we all believe, that's what Kimi believed."
Raikkonen left the winter-headline grabbing to others, but when he got to Australia things could hardly have gone any better in terms of making his mark with both the team and the tifosi: pole position, victory and fastest lap. Michael who? But he was flattered by circumstances, not least the fact team-mate Felipe Massa had a problem in qualifying and had to fight through the field.
Things got tougher in Malaysia, where the car's performance was compromised, but he took third and some useful points. Massa's early excursion suggested that Raikkonen had already established himself as de facto team leader.
"The Michelins were quite a bit different when you approached the corner and, in order to avoid understeer, you had to use the tyres in quite an aggressive way. With Bridgestone it's completely the opposite so, if you want to avoid the understeer, you need to be more gentle on turn-in" Luca Baldisserri
That perception changed abruptly in Bahrain, where Massa scored an impressive win, and Raikkonen was some way behind in third. "Australia just stunned us all, I think," says his Aussie engineer Chris Dyer. "It was just such an easy weekend. And really you kind of know that that's not going to last. We came back down to earth with a bit of a thud in Malaysia, especially with Kimi struggling there with the engine, so he was pretty much fighting with one hand tied behind his back. And then Bahrain wasn't glorious."
That weekend at the Sakhir circuit had put a negative focus on Raikkonen, and it was evident that all was not well.
"The problems started more in qualifying, to be honest," says Ferrari engineering chief Luca Baldisserri, "because he was not able to put the lap time together. Even in Brazil he was still struggling a little bit. Then he had problems to understand all our systems, to understand the tyres. At that stage we were not fantastic in terms of starts, and we improved quite a lot.
"The Michelins were quite a bit different when you approached the corner and, in order to avoid understeer, you had to use the tyres in quite an aggressive way. With Bridgestone it's completely the opposite so, if you want to avoid the understeer, you need to be more gentle on turn-in. And that is what he learned. We did some tuning of the set-up, plus he adjusted his style."
That process was still being explored in Spain, the first of a run of four races during which Raikkonen was to earn just 10 points. At Barcelona he suffered a failure after just nine laps, the first retirement among any of the top runners to date.
Another Massa win confirmed that the Brazilian was on the ascendancy. "That was a pretty bad run," says Dyer. "Spain was an electrical problem - we would have been second or third. We probably wouldn't have beaten Felipe there, but I'm pretty sure it was an easy third, with a probable second."
Having been frustrated by the unreliability at McLaren, Raikkonen was hardly impressed. Keen to get home to Switzerland to watch the ice hockey world championship final on TV, he bailed out of the circuit early. The team had let him go of course, but it created the wrong impression at a bad time. Schumacher would never have done that, we observed. Indeed, that very day Schuey left the paddock three hours after the race - and he hadn't even been driving.
The former world champion was a regular presence at that stage of the season, and there's little doubt that Raikkonen was probably as confused as everyone else about his predecessor's exact role. The Finn clearly bristled at naive questions about how much Michael was helping him. After all, he didn't need any fatherly advice from Mika Hakkinen when he started at McLaren and, at that stage, he had just one year's F1 experience behind him.
Early in Q2 in Monaco, Raikkonen made his most costly mistake of the season, clipping the Swimming Pool barrier with the front right after the back had stepped out on him. A trackrod was broken and a wishbone cracked, and he demonstrated his bravery to the team by insisting he still wanted to go out, and would take responsibility. He was overruled, and forced to start 16th. In a race of low attrition, he made laboured progressed up to eighth.
"That was the mistake he made," says Robertson. "Until that point he was right there. I'd say Monaco was the turning point, despite the mistake. He felt he'd conquered it."
Dyer adds: "Monaco was a strange weekend, with an unforced error. He's been looking pretty good up to then, really comfortable all weekend, really happy with the car. A small mistake, and you pay the price.
"Obviously he was disappointed. We're all disappointed when we make mistakes. We're disappointed when the car breaks down on him, we're disappointed when we don't give him quite the right set-up, and he's disappointed when he doesn't do the job."
The pace of the McLarens was such that Raikkonen would probably have been racing for third in Monaco and there was a similar performance deficit in Canada. This time Raikkonen edged out Massa in qualifying, but he had another poor start, and made life difficult for himself by damaging his front wing on the Brazilian's rear tyre. Later he picked up some of Robert Kubica's crash debris, and he was also delayed by having to wait behind his team-mate at the first stops under the safety car. He eventually finished fifth, after what was outwardly another unconvincing performance. The team felt differently.
"To be honest we weren't that bad in Canada," says Dyer. "We had a dreadful start, and then we got screwed like everybody else by the safety car, so it was never going to be glorious. But the signs through the race were that things weren't as bad as they looked."
Indianapolis a week later was to be even better. It didn't look too promising when Raikkonen made yet another bad start and got stuck behind Nick Heidfeld and Heikki Kovalainen but, in the late stages, he showed impressive speed and set the fastest lap as he salvaged fourth, behind Massa.
"Canada and Indy weren't good results," admits Dyer. "But we would see signs we were making progress."
"The really great thing about Kimi is he suffers for about one hour, and then it's all behind him. It's simple philosophy - and I couldn't do it - which is to say, 'That's behind me now, I can't do anything about it. Let's go forward'" David Robertson
Steve Robertson agrees the US race was significant: "In all honesty, it really clicked at the race at Indianapolis. I think he found his feet there in terms of a car he really enjoyed, and was more to his liking. And from then on I don't think anyone can question the fact that Kimi has been the strongest driver. You can't argue with that."
Nevertheless, after Indy, Raikkonen was 26 points behind Hamilton, and at that stage there seemed to be little hope of stopping the McLaren steamroller. But then things began to swing in his favour. At Magny-Cours he qualified only third, but he got ahead of Hamilton at the start and then made the most of the pit strategy to leapfrog poleman Massa. It was a critical race in many ways, not least because it featured him getting the upper hand on his frustrated team-mate.
"We struggled a little bit earlier in the year with the starts," says Dyer. "And, since Magny-Cours, Kimi's starts have been spot-on. I don't think he's lost a place since then, and more often than not he's gained places. The guys have done a fantastic job with the rest of what's required for the start."
Another win seven days later at Silverstone suggested that Raikkonen might be gaining enough momentum for a title challenge, but Nurburgring was to change that. Significantly, he took his first pole since Melbourne, but then the first-lap rain created a lottery. Raikkonen made his life difficult by understeering out of the pit entry back onto the track, and had to run an extra lap on dry tyres.
Once things calmed down, he was destined for a useful helping of points when he suffered a hydraulic glitch, at the very same track where retirements had cost him two titles at McLaren. It was his second failure of the season - the only other DNF to that point among the top four was Massa's self-inflicted black flag at Montreal.
"It was really gutting for me," Dyer admits. "I'd seen him lose two championships before due to reliability, and it's always been one of our strong points. I was not very happy to think that maybe he was going to lose another one here to reliability."
Robertson says the man himself was unfazed: "The really great thing about Kimi is he suffers for about one hour, and then it's all behind him. It's simple philosophy - and I couldn't do it - which is to say, 'That's behind me now, I can't do anything about it. Let's go forward'."
The next three races featured some efficient points-gathering: an unexpectedly close second to Hamilton in Hungary, another second, to Massa, in Istanbul and a third at Monza on a day when McLaren humbled Ferrari at home.
Baldisserri thinks Raikkonen would have beaten Hamilton in Hungary had he not lost a crucial few seconds when he ran off the road: "He lost two seconds behind Hamilton that didn't allow us to change the strategy in the pitstop, which I think we could have done differently."
Then came Spa, where Raikkonen had won the previous two races for McLaren. He took his third (and final) pole of the season and put in a masterful performance that showed beyond all doubt he was on top of his game.
Top 10: Kimi Raikkonen’s greatest F1 races ranked
A season is fought over 17 races, of course, but arguably it was Fuji that ultimately won Raikkonen the title. After three laps, it looked like he was well out of the game after the team's ill-advised (and, as it turned out, illegal) decision to start on intermediate tyres.
"We took the decision that we took," says Baldisserri. "Until the mathematics put you out of the game, our team spirit is to try, and it was the right approach."
Helped by the safety car, but mostly by a largely unsung virtuoso performance that humbled his struggling team-mate, Raikkonen fought back to third place. He was still in the title picture, but... 17 points in two races?
The impossible dream became a little more likely in China, where he hustled his way past the struggling Hamilton - after keeping his tyres in better shape - and logged a superb wet/dry win. And then came Brazil, where there was only one target: a win, with Massa riding shotgun. Incredibly, all the cards fell into place, and Massa played his supporting role. With six wins to the four of each of the McLaren drivers, no one can deny Raikkonen's claim to the title.
"He did everything right when everybody else was spouting off and saying this or that. He just kept his head down, got on and delivered. That's why Ferrari got him, and I know they're thrilled that he managed to do it" David Robertson
"He's put in some fantastic drives this year," smiles Dyer. "He hasn't let us down, but we've let him down a few times. He's gone from strength to strength, the car's been good, and he hasn't really made any errors in the last two thirds of the season. He's cool and he's fast and he just gets on and does the job."
Robertson adds: "He really is a giant - the right man has won this. He did everything right when everybody else was spouting off and saying this or that. He just kept his head down, got on and delivered. That's why Ferrari got him, and I know they're thrilled that he managed to do it."
Baldisserri offers a fascinating footnote to the season: "Michael had input into the team; he was a lot closer to the team. Kimi has a completely different approach, and he tends to accept what we give to him. It's a lot more complicated for us to understand what he needs. With Michael it was a bit easier. And Kimi drove a very good car this year. Michael showed that even with a car that was not so competitive, he could win. With Kimi, I don't know yet."
Wt happened next?
While Raikkonen's talents have never been questioned, it is remarkable to note since his F1 title-clinching Brazilian GP triumph in 2007, he has gone on to claim a further six grand prix victories, the same total he achieved across his title-winning year.
Despite this, and with the exception of his two years out of F1 in 2010 and 2011, the Finn has never been far away from the sharp end of the F1 grid until his second departure from Ferrari in 2018 to move back to the Sauber-run Alfa Romeo squad.
Raikkonen continues to make F1 history through his longevity. After surpassing Rubens Barrichello's record tally at the 2020 Eifel GP, the Finn made his 341st start in last week's washout Belgian GP and assuming the current TBC 21 November date is filled will end his career on 351 race starts.
PLUS: Why the time is right for Raikkonen to hang up his F1 helmet
While Raikkonen may have never hit the heights of 2007 since, his record remains outstanding in F1 to cement his place as an all-time great.

007 Fest 2021 Masterpost
I had such fun this year! As every year, there were so many more things I wanted to do, but this is what I did do.
Some items are repeated on this list because they counted toward more than one thing. And I’ve tried to add summaries of al the writing, but only the first time it’s listed.
As this is a long list, it’s all going under the cut.
Tables
Countries + Titles
Sky Crane by Linorien (Morocco)
It felt like Mission Impossible, an agent on wires slowly lowering to the ground. Except Q was pretty sure in those movies, the lowering was controlled by the agent himself, not by their quartermaster on a different continent with no visual on the agent at all.
Like a Phoenix by Linorien (Jaimaica)
Missing scene from The Man with the Golden Gun after Bond and Scaramanga finally actually try to kill each other. Bond isn't in good shape, and neither is Felix. But that doesn't stop him from trying to get to his friend.

Paris and James had seemed like a good couple. Both young with more money than they knew what to do with. It was going so well.
There should’ve been a time and a place, but this wasn’t it by Linorien (USA)
Felix mourns Della
The Least Unacceptable Solution by Linorien (Malaysia)
It wasn't their best plan. It was far from it. They hadn't had any remotely good options for escaping from the 84th floor of the Petronas Towers. But this was the least unacceptable solution.
The Claw by Linorien (France)
M tries for a relaxing week off. But the life or death mentality can be hard to shake off.
The Cookie Cutter Mission by Linorien (Japan)
It was a simple mission. Too simple.

Permissions Revoked (5 chapters + art)
Tron AU. Q is no stranger to the Grid. The time dilation is great when he needed a last minute cram session in uni and even now that he's quartermaster it can help him set up more powerful firewalls. But he never anticipated being trapped there. One of his programs has gone rogue and escaped into London, trapping Q in the Grid. Q must journey to the root to restore his freedome of movement while R sends Bond to fight the program trying to release more programs, and the information they contain, into the world.
Steps to the Sky (+ title image)
In his previous life, Q was Rapunzel. He’s since cut his hair and moved on with his life, eventually landing the job of the Quartermaster, but the past doesn’t always stay hidden. Can James help him when trouble arrives?
Journey Through the Archives (4 chapters + art)
My Audio Drama!
While forced to organise the archives in an old bunker, a Q Branch minion finds an old recorder and decides to keep an audio log while she's working. It's a good distraction from the other noises, helps her feel not quite as isolated from the rest of MI6. But it does reveal more than she notices.
